The Season of Lent leads the Church on a forty-day journey of repentance, remembrance, and prayer. It is a time to consider the sufferings and death of Jesus and to prepare for Easter. This is especially true during midweek services in Lent. The Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days and have only hints of the season’s mood, such as the omission of “Alleluias.” Sundays are islands of refreshment in our Lenten walk. Purple is the color of the season and represents repentance and solemnity.

Our service today begins with a “gathering rite.”

This order musically ties together the invocation, confession, Kyrie (Lord, have mercy), and absolution and also replaces an opening hymn. The solemn tone of this gathering rite reminds us of our sin and our need for a Savior. We are comforted by God’s great mercy for us in sending Jesus to be that Savior.

CONFESSION We come before the true God only because of his mercy and not because we deserve to come. We confess our unworthiness and rejoice to hear the assurance of forgiveness.

M: As we prepare to celebrate the mystery of Christ’s love, let us confess our sin and ask the Lord for pardon and strength.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. THE WORD FIRST LESSON Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. There above it stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Genesis 28:10-17 be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”

The First Lesson is frequently a reading from the Old Testament. It shares a common theme with the Second Lesson (often from one of the epistles) and the Gospel.

SECOND LESSON Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.

The Verse of the Day is a familiar or significant Scripture text which focuses our thoughts and attention on the theme of the service or the season of the church year.

The congregation stands out of respect for the words of Christ our King.

Romans 5:1-11 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!

For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings:

He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.

He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and

said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.

What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?

Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

APOSTLES’ CREED C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Early Christian Church as a personal confession of faith. It is so named because it confesses the faith taught by the Apostles of Jesus.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Divine Calls Extended At the Voters’ Meeting last Sunday, our congregation extended two calls: one to Mrs. Laura Heiman (wife of Grace Pastor Ryan Heiman) to serve as a part-time director for our Child Learning Center at Grace-Sahuarita, and one to Pastor David Bivens to serve as our Mission Pastor at Grace-Benson and Grace-Vail. Pastor Bivens currently serves Christ the Lord Lutheran Church in Houston, TX. Please keep the Heiman family and Pastor Bivens, his wife Brandi, and their three children in your prayers as they deliberate over where the Lord would have them serve at this time.

Guest Musicians at Grace This week, we will have several opportunities to welcome guest musicians to our congregation and to enjoy their music and the unique worship services they have put together for us. Here at GraceTucson, Branches Band will lead the music in our midweek Lenten services on Wednesday. Next Sunday, WELS band KOINE will present a worship service entitled Footsteps to the Cross in place of our regular worship services. This visual musical narrative follows Christ from the Mount of Transfiguration to the cross. Because this worship service will last approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, Adult Bible Study on March 4 may begin a little later than usual. For more information about these guest musicians, please see the additional announcements on the following page.

Praise and Proclaim Workshop Praise and Proclaim Ministries is a WELS-affiliated group that trains and works with congregations on particular outreach initiatives. Praise and Proclaim will be working with Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in northern Tucson (8799 North Northern Ave, 85704) on March 16 & 17. Grace members who are interested in this approach to outreach are invited to attend the training portion of this event on Friday, March 16 (light dinner at 5:00 PM, training from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM). Those who attend Friday may also participate in door-to-door canvassing on Saturday, March 17 (canvassing begins at 9:00 AM, lunch break, debriefing at 3:30 PM, dinner at 4:30 PM). If you would like to attend this event, please let one of the Grace pastors know if you would like to attend Friday only or both Friday and Saturday. Our deadline to sign-up is March 7.

Lenten Services Wednesday midweek services will be held at Grace-Benson, Grace-Sahuarita, and Grace-Tucson every Wednesday through March 21. The theme for our services is “Jesus Christ Is Our Great High Priest.” The sermons and service themes will rotate among the various sites, so worshipers who attend more than one site could hear a sermon repeated. See the schedule below for this week.

Branches Band WELS musicians Andy and Rachel Braun of the Branches Band will lead our music in worship services on Wednesday, February 28 at Grace-Tucson for both the 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM midweek Lenten services. They will also lead worship music on Sunday, March 4 at Grace-Sahuarita for both the 7:45 AM and 10:00 AM worship services. Andy and Rachel travel around the country with this ministry, playing hymns and original songs based on Scripture. Their CDs and other merchandise will be available for purchase. KOINE WELS band KOINE will lead music in our worship services on Sunday, March 4 at Grace-Tucson for both the 7:45 AM and 10:00 AM worship services. The service they will be presenting is called Footsteps to the Cross, a very visual and moving musical narrative following Christ from the Mount of Transfiguration to the cross. KOINE is an award winning worship band known for combining century-old hymns with modern accompaniment. After the services, their CDs and other merchandise will be available for purchase. Birth Announcement We rejoice with Pastor and Laura Heiman at the birth of their son, Ingram Arthur Heiman on February 20, 2018. We thank God for being with mother and baby during delivery and look forward to welcoming Ingram into the family of believers through Holy Baptism.

Memorial Service Grace Member Gisela Kittel was called home to heaven on Tuesday, January 30. A memorial service has been scheduled for Saturday, March 24 at 3:00 PM at Grace-Tucson.

New Sunday Morning Bible Study A brand new Bible study on the Book of Galatians is starting Sunday, March 4 at both Grace-Tucson and Grace-Vail! This letter from Paul to the Christians in Galatia offers us a great deal of encouragement about what it means to be a Christian and to live as a Christian. If you haven’t given Sunday morning Bible Study a try or are out of the habit of attending, this would be a great time to jump in!

Church Library Media Items Available If you still own a VCR or a cassette player – you’re in luck! Our church library is giving away all of its cassette tapes and video tapes to anyone that would like them. A few tables will be set up with these items on the west end of the fellowship hall by the church library after worship services TODAY. Please come by and take any of these items that you feel you or a friend or relative can use!

Our library also has lovely children’s books for Easter and other times of the year – in addition to many devotional, fiction, and Bible study books for adults, teens, and children. Please visit the Grace Church library and take a look at the wonderful books available to check out!

Caps and scarves, flannel blankets, afghans, white socks, skull caps for our military men and women in active duty and skull caps for those who are going through cancer treatment are being collected. Donations can be dropped off in the office at Grace-Tucson. There is no deadline. Please contact Karen Manning at 520-241-0909 if you have any questions.

ACSTO and Tuition Tax Credit The Arizona Christian School Tuition Organization (ACSTO) exists to provide tuition scholarships to students at Christian schools by receiving tax credit donations. ACSTO works closely with our WELS schools in Arizona, including Redeemer Lutheran School here in Tucson and our area Lutheran high school, Arizona Lutheran Academy (ALA) in Phoenix. Currently, 13 members of Grace attend Redeemer Lutheran School, and 4 members attend ALA. The support of ACSTO, which allows many families to afford the Lutheran education that they want for their children, is made possible by Arizona residents who make donations. In fact, specific children may even be recommended to receive a scholarship from your donation. Arizona law also allows you to receive the full amount, up to certain limits, as a tax credit on your state income taxes.

This means that you can direct money that you would otherwise pay to the state to support a cause that interests you. You can donate to Lutheran education without spending any extra money.

ACSTO has an excellent video explaining the tax credit law in Arizona, and you can view that video on their website at www.ACSTO.org. Donations made before April 15 can still be applied to your 2017 taxes. Please keep in mind this opportunity and make use of it as you are able!
