Welcome to Grace! Our mission at Grace is to teach the inspired and inerrant Word of God, to proclaim that Jesus Christ is the crucified and risen Savior of the world, and to nurture believers for lives of Christian service. We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you offer him your thanks and praise. The order of worship we will follow is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. LARGE PRINT worship folders are available at the entrances for those who desire them. Today we are using elements from the Christian Worship (2021) hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal racks in each pew. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. A vocalist will aid in our singing and will be recorded for our audio disks and video live-streaming. ALL SAINTS’ DAY The church has long observed a day for remembering all the saints who have died in the one true Christian faith and have received the crown of everlasting life. Since the eighth century, All Saints’ Day has traditionally been observed each year on November 1. On this, the first Sunday of November, we celebrate this festival of church. We believe in “the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints.” All those who have faith in Jesus as their Savior are holy. (“Saint” comes from the Latin word “sanctus,” which means “holy.”) God grants the status of saint to all believers. Since sainthood is achieved through faith in Christ, we refer to believers as the invisible Church. The members of this communion of saints are unknown to us since only God can see the heart. Furthermore, even if we knew the identity of each of God’s saints on earth, they would not look all that different from the rest of mankind. Believers still struggle with sin. They still struggle with trials and temptations. They still struggle against a world that will always be hostile to Christ and his message. They belong to the church militant. However, some members of the communion of saints no longer struggle with trial and sin. They are not oppressed by an anti-Christian world. These are all the saints who, through their Christian death, have triumphed over all these things. The blessedness of being God’s saint is no longer invisible for them. They live in the glory of Christ's light. This week, we thank God for those members of the communion of saints who have gone before us and now enjoy everlasting life. We feebly struggle, just as they once did. But now, thanks to Christ, they in glory shine. Their example encourages us as we patiently wait to join them.

CONFESSION OF SINS “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” James 5:16

Beloved in the Lord, we desire to one day join the saints triumphant in heaven. Yet we have disobeyed God, and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Christ gave the authority to forgive the sins of penitent sinners to his church: “Whenever you forgive people’s sins, they are forgiven.” John 20:23

Hebrews 11:32-40

And what more should I say? There would not be enough time for me to continue to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets. 33 By faith they conquered kingdoms, carried out justice, obtained things that were promised, shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edges of the sword, were made powerful after being weak, became mighty in battle, and caused foreign armies to flee. 35 Women received back their dead by resurrection. And others who were tortured did not accept their release, so that they may take part in a better resurrection. 36 Still others experienced mocking and lashes, in addition to chains and imprisonment. 37 They were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were tempted; they were killed with the sword; they went around in sheepskins and goatskins, needy, afflicted, and mistreated. 38 The world was not worthy of them as they wandered in deserts and mountains and caves and holes in the ground.

For countless saints, their Christian faith was the cause of pain and even death. They faced persecution and death with courage because they knew God had planned something better.

All of these were commended in Scripture by faith, yet they did not receive what was promised, 40 because God had planned something better for us, namely, that they would not reach the goal apart from us. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

CONFESSION OF FAITH

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was cruciﬁed under Pontius Pilate. He suﬀered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

The Nicene Creed was ﬁrst developed in 325 at the First Council of Nicea. It was written to reaﬃrm the Biblical teaching of the divinity of Jesus, God’s Son. Like the Apostles’ and Athanasian Creeds, the Nicene Creed is a confession of what the Bible teaches.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and gloriﬁed, who has spoken through the prophets. It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who in blessing his saints of the past has given us assurance and hope that, following their example, we may run the race marked out for us and receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Blessed are you, Lord God, eternal King and gracious Father. In love you made us the crown of your creation. In mercy you planned our salvation. In grace you sent your Son to redeem us from sin. We remember and give you thanks that your eternal Son, Jesus Christ, became ﬂesh and made his dwelling among us, that he willingly placed himself under law to redeem those under law, that he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death on a cross, that he has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. Bless us as we receive your Son’s body and blood in this Sacrament. Forgive our sins, increase our faith, strengthen our fellowship, and deepen our longing for the day when Christ will welcome us to his eternal feast. Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

As he speaks the Words of Institution, the minister both proclaims the words of Jesus to the congregation and sets apart the bread and wine for this special use. The sign of the cross reminds us of Christ’s death.

DISTRIBUTION The Bible teaches that the Lord’s Supper is a unique communion of Christ and the individual believer as well as a coming together of people who hold to the same beliefs. Because of these Scriptural truths, we practice Member Communion at Grace. Those who are conﬁrmed members of Wisconsin Synod congregations (WELS) are invited to receive the Lord’s Supper with us. If you are not a WELS member but have an interest in receiving Holy Communion, please speak with the pastor after church today or at another time. We are aware that there are a number of other teachings about Holy Communion, and we want it to be a blessing for you, so we would look forward to sharing with you what God says about this Sacrament.

TODAY Holy Communion We provide gluten-free communion wafers for those with wheat allergy, gluten-sensitivity, or celiac disease. These wafers are stored and handled separately to avoid cross-contamination. They are “bread” as Scripture requires and are consecrated along with the rest of the bread. For those requiring gluten-free wafers, please take one from the stand located at the front rail as you approach for communion. Simply hold it so that the pastor can see it at the time of distribution. Grape juice is available for those who for health or medical reason require it instead of wine. Please speak with a pastor about providing grape juice for you on future Sundays. Today we are distributing Holy Communion in “tables.” The ushers will direct members forward by the side aisles. Groups of about ten will be guided toward the center aisle and will line up to receive the elements together. After each table communes, the pastor will offer a blessing and dismiss the group to return by the center aisle. To aid in your personal preparation for Holy Communion, a list of Christian Questions can be found on pages 295-296 in the hymnal. These were prepared by Martin Luther for those intending to receive the Sacrament. The prayers below may be used before and after receiving communion.

Altar Flowers

The flowers beautifying our altar today have been given by Audrey Nessinger in memory of Dick Street and Bob Nessinger and in thanks for all of God’s blessings. If you would like to provide flowers for the altar, please call (520-623-6633) or email (office@gracelutheransaz.org) the Grace Central Office to reserve a Sunday. The next available Sundays are December 18 and 25. The cost for the 2 bouquets is $32.50. After the 10:00 AM service you may take the flowers home or leave them to be dropped off to one of our homebound members if a visit is being made.

Fellowship

Sunday Morning Bible Study

“A God of Love Wouldn’t Send People to Hell.” “It Doesn’t Matter How God Made the World.” These and other popular, positive, catchy statements might sound good, but do they really fit with what the Bible says? We are currently working through “10 Lies About God.” This study will help us respond to false teachings about God and to defend what the Bible teaches. Now would be an excellent time to make this study a part of your Sunday routine! Please join us at 9:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall.

Children’s Bible Hour: TODAY

All children, ages 3—8th grade, are invited to attend Children’s Bible Hour on Sunday mornings. The children will begin all together in the main area of our Education Building at 8:45 AM for music and an opening devotion and from there will be divided into age-based classrooms. ANNOUNCEMENTS Questions Answered About Online Giving

Grace makes use of an online giving portal to gather offerings electronically. Regular offerings and special offerings can be given online, and offerings can be automated as weekly or monthly gifts. About half of Grace’s regular offerings are gathered electronically. The online platform is very secure and works from a computer or smartphone. Jay Wiechmann, Grace’s Financial Manager, will be available in the Courtyard today after the early and late services to answer questions and share information about online giving. If you would like to learn more about online giving, or if you already use online giving and have questions, stop by!

Tucson Campus Ministry Bible Study: TONIGHT & Wednesday

We’ve finished our annual fascination with the supernatural and occult during Halloween. Did you consider what there actually is “on the other side?” Join us for TCM’s Halloween-themed Bible study as we ask the question “Who is Satan Actually?” and see what God’s Word, the best source to find our answer, has to say about this. We will also consider the confidence that Christians have before Satan because of their God. We will meet at 7:00 PM in the TCM Student Center here at Grace-Tucson. Refreshments will be provided. Additional Bible Study: Join us this Wednesday for TCM’s midweek Bible Study “Connecting Sinai to Calvary” as we see how Jesus is the central figure of the Old Testament. We will meet at 6:30 PM in the UA Student Union across from the bookstore entrance. Gourmet donuts will be provided.

Midweek Bible Studies: Wednesday & Thursday

Our Church History Bible Study meets on Wednesdays at 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM in the GraceTucson Fellowship Hall. We are discussing the history of the Prussian Union. Please join us!

Our Women’s Bible Study is working through the book “Prepared to Answer” and tackling subjects such as “But I’m pro-choice” “There are things I’ll never be able to forgive.” Each question is handled in just a handful of pages, so it is easy to jump into the study at any time, even if you can’t make it each week. This class meets next on Thursday, November 17, at 9:00 AM in the Grace-Tucson Fellowship Hall.

VailFest: November 12

VailFest is an annual event sponsored by the Greater Vail Area Chamber of Commerce. This year's VailFest is scheduled for Saturday, November 12, at the Pima County Fairgrounds, and Grace will be hosting a booth. This is a great opportunity to introduce ourselves to neighbors in the area of our Grace-Vail location. Volunteers are needed in a number of areas including set up on Friday evening (November 11), children’s craft table, photo booth, and visiting with people who pass by our booth. ALA Sunday at Grace-Tucson: November 20

On Sunday, November 20, the A Capella Choir from Arizona Lutheran Academy will provide music in both services at Grace-Tucson and Pastor Brad Bode from ALA will be our guest preacher. Please plan to join us for this special worship service of Word and song! To express our thanks to the ALA choir, a door offering will be collected that they will use to help defray their travel costs. Grace member Naomi Kassulke is a member of this choir. 19

Grace's high school youth group, the Lifeliners, is going to Golf N' Stuff (6503 E Tanque Verde Rd 85715) on November 20. After Grace-Tucson's 10:00 AM worship service, Pastor Patoka and the Lifeliners will go out for lunch and then enjoy some mini golf fun and arcade action. Divine Calls Extended

At our special Call meeting on Sunday, October 23, Grace extended two Divine Calls for Mission Teachers at our Child Learning Center. One was to Mrs. Jennifer Rannow who currently serves at Precious Lambs Early Learning Center at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. The second call was to Mrs. Alison Moeri who currently serves at Little Lambs Learning Center at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Duluth, Minnesota. Please keep both of these ladies in your prayers as they deliberate whether to accept our call and to move their ministry here to southern Arizona or to decline our call and continue serving in their current locations. Lifeliner Calendar Fundraiser

Support Grace’s high school youth group, the Lifeliners, and get your 2023 in order by buying a wall calendar. Each month features a high-quality nature scene and an uplifting Bible verse. Each day has plenty of space for you to write in your appointments and events. Proceeds will support future Lifeliners activities. The cost is $10 for a calendar, or get 2 for $15. Stop by the Lifeliners table in the Courtyard following worship or call the Grace Central Office (520-623-6633) to buy yours while supplies last.

Mission to the Children Christmas Gifts

Mission to the Children is preparing Christmas Boxes for the families in the villages they serve in Mexico. They are requesting the following items: soccer or sports balls, stuffed animals (about 10” high), children’s socks, and candy. Visa, MasterCard, Walmart, or Target gift cards are also appreciated for purchasing items that are not donated. Items and gift cards may be dropped off in the Grace Central Office Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Please bring your items by Sunday, November 27. 20

Sometimes you could just use a helping hand! Do you have a talent or service that you could offer to our fellow Grace members who could use some help (at a minimal cost or free)? Just a few ideas: outdoor work, computer work, sewing/mending, handyman, cooking, organizing, transportation to appointments, etc. We’re sure there are many more! If you would like to help, please fill out a Helping Hands card found on the bulletin board outside of the Library in the Fellowship Hall. These offers will then be posted on the bulletin board.

Care Bags for the Homeless

Grace members together with Tucson Campus Ministry students are putting together care bags for distribution to the homeless during the upcoming holiday season. Anyone who would like to donate items for this ministry may do so by placing them in the box located inside the side entrance to the church building or in the west end of the Fellowship Hall. If you would like to make a monetary donation toward the purchase of items, please bring it to the church office. Items needed include: Individually wrapped food items Regular size Travel size GoGo Squeez Applesauce toothbrushes hand/face wipes granola bars (no nuts) Chapstick (20 ct. or less) cheese and cracker “sandwiches” band aids toothpaste (no Cheez Its please) deodorant 16 oz. bottles of water Kleenex Hard candy (NO mints please) lotion (hotel size) Bumble Bee - Snack on the Run! (chicken, tuna or ham) Beef sticks Fruit snacks (Welch’s) Care-bags will be packaged in gallon-size zipper bags so individual items must be small.
