WORSHIP NOTES

We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you offer him your thanks and praise. The worship service is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. Those wishing to leave an offering can do so at the exit today or give online at www.GraceLutheranSAZ.org/give. (You can also scan the QR code to the right to access the online giving page.)

Today we are using elements from the Christian Worship (2021) hymnal. You will find these blue worship books in the hymnal pocket in each row. You will be asked to open the hymnal to participate in parts of the service today. We hope this will help our members and friends become better acquainted with these new books.

THE FESTIVAL OF REFORMATION

On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther nailed 95 Theses statements for debate on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany beginning a spiritual and historical movement known as the Reformation. The Reformation did not just change the face of Europe; it restored the gospel to the church. It gave God’s Word to the people. As we celebrate the Reformation, we are not honoring the man for whom our church body is named. We are thanking God for his grace which he has demonstrated through the generations preserving the church and setting us free.

OUR SERVICE THEME THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE

We value freedom and strive to protect freedoms. But do we truly understand freedom? Freedom for many means doing what you want without control or coercion. Jesus helps us to understand true freedom: “If you remain in my word, you are really my disciples. You will also know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31 32). Jesus says that you will never be free by living however you want. Take that attitude towards life and you’ll be a slave. You’ll only be free spiritually, emotionally, eternally “If you remain in my word” and therefore “know the truth.”

A key principle Martin Luther established through the Reformation is sola scriptura (Scripture alone). Luther thought it was the answer to all of life’s fundamental questions. On what basis is a belief or practice justified or rejected? Scripture alone. Who or what is the final arbiter of truth? Scripture alone. Heirs of the Reformation still bind themselves to Scripture. Does restricting ourselves in this manner curtail freedom? Just the opposite is true. God’s divinely inspired truth brings freedom. It frees us from slavery to sinful delusions, the burden of guilt, and any earthly power. Today we see that when we willingly bind ourselves to truth, Jesus keeps his promise. The truth sets us free.

ORDER OF WORSHIP

Today we are using a special order of worship based on Luther’s German Mass (Deutsche Messe) which he published in 1526. This order of worship was completely chanted except for the sermon. Some of the worship songs we are singing today would have been used in the early Lutheran church.

CONFESSION OF SINS

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Let us confess our sins to the Lord.

Holy God, gracious Father, I am sinful by nature and have sinned against you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should. Matthew 6 and Luke 11 record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Almighty and eternal God, when the set time had come, you sent your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, to take our place under the demands of the law and endure the just punishment for our sins. You raised him from death in glorious splendor and for his sake, you richly and daily forgive sins.

Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits.

When the set time had come, you poured out your Spirit on your people and called them to proclaim the gospel to every creature. Equipped and encouraged, they carried the story of salvation to all the world.

Sunday Morning Bible Study

“God just wants me to be happy.” “God helps those who help themselves.” These and other popular, positive, catchy statements might sound good, but do they really fit with what the Bible says? We are currently working through the Bible study, “10 Lies About God.” This study will help us respond to false teachings about God and to defend what the Bible teaches. Now would be an excellent time to make this study a part of your Sunday routine! Class is held at 9:00 AM in the CLC gymnasium.

Area Reformation Service: Today

Please plan to join us for a special worship service this afternoon at 4:00 PM at Grace Tucson. This Area Reformation Service celebrates God's goodness to us through the Lutheran Reformation, and it provides an opportunity to worship with WELS members from churches all around the Tucson area. This service will be different from this morning’s and will include our guest preacher, District President Jon Buchholz. Our Area Reformation Service will include the celebration of Holy Communion this year. You are also invited to stick around after the service for snacks and fellowship.

Tucson Campus Ministry Bible Study: TONIGHT & Wednesday

Join us tonight at 7:00 PM in the Student Center at Grace Tucson for TCM’s Bible Study “Patience and Prayer” from James 5:7 20. Do you struggle to be patient? How healthy is your prayer life? If you can grow in either of them, then join us for this study. Not only will we see how this text helps us in these, but we’ll also finish our “Real Faith for Real Life” unit on the book of James. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Additional Bible Study: Join us this Wednesday for TCM’s midweek Bible Study “Connecting Sinai to Calvary” as we see how Jesus is the central figure of the Old Testament. We will meet at 6:30 PM in the Student Union across from the bookstore entrance. Gourmet donuts will be provided.

Divine Calls Extended

At our special Call meeting on Sunday, October 23, Grace extended two Divine Calls for Mission Teachers at our Child Learning Center. One was to Mrs. Jennifer Rannow who currently serves at Precious Lambs Early Learning Center at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. The second call was to Mrs. Alison Moeri who currently serves at Little Lambs Learning Center at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Duluth, Minnesota. Please keep both of these ladies in your prayers as they deliberate whether to accept our call and to move their ministry here to southern Arizona or to decline our call and continue serving in their current locations. Feel free to communicate with them any information that you feel may be helpful in their deliberations.

Wednesday Bible Study

The Bible Project: The 66 books of the Bible are a collection of history, poetry, prophesy and insights into the eternal history of God and his people. The focus of the entire Bible is God’s plan of salvation. However because of the sheer volume of the Bible, many people get bogged down trying to read it and understand it. This Bible Project is a study that quickly summarizes each book and give the student a quick overview of the Bible. Please join us on Wednesday 10:00 AM in Church Entryway.

Tucson Campus Ministry Ax Throwing: Friday

Awaken your medieval self by throwing some axes! TCM is hosting an ax throwing night for college students and college age individuals at St. Hubert’s Hatchet House (908 W. Prince Road, Tucson, 85705) THIS Friday, November 4. We will meet there at 7:15 PM, receive some safety instructions from an instructor, and throw axes until 8:45 PM. Snacks will be provided. VailFest: November 12

VailFest is an annual event sponsored by the Greater Vail Area Chamber of Commerce. This year's VailFest is scheduled for Saturday, November 12, at the Pima County Fairgrounds, and Grace will be hosting a booth. This is a great opportunity to introduce ourselves to neighbors in the area of our Grace-Vail location. Volunteers are needed in a number of areas including set up on Friday evening (November 11), children’s craft table, photo booth, and visiting with people who pass by our booth. Men of His Word Rally: January 21, 2023

WELS men of all ages are invited to this one day event on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at the Desert Willow Conference Center in Phoenix. The theme will be “Man Up! - In a Man Down World.” The keynote speaker will be Pastor Dan Solofra of CrossWalk, Phoenix. There will also be eight breakout sessions including: “Hot Button Topics in Our Society and How to Handle Them,” “Dating and Choosing a Spouse Today” (young men), “Lead Me, Father” (parenting), and “Prayer by Men.” More information can be found at MenofHisWord.org.

Lifeliner Calendar Fundraiser

Support Grace’s high school youth group, the Lifeliners, and get your 2023 in order by buying a wall calendar. Each month features a high quality nature scene and an uplifting Bible verse. Each day has plenty of space for you to write in your appointments and events. Proceeds will support future Lifeliners activities. The cost is $10 for one calendar or two for $15. Calendars are available for purchase on the Welcome Desk in the entryway.

Mission to the Children Christmas Gifts

Mission to the Children is preparing Christmas Boxes for the families in the villages they serve in Mexico. They are requesting the following items: soccer or sports balls, stuffed animals (about 10” high), children’s socks, and candy. Visa, MasterCard, Walmart, or Target gift cards are also appreciated for purchasing items that are not donated. Items and gift cards may be dropped off in the Grace Central Office Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Please bring your items by Sunday, November 27.
