WORSHIP NOTES

We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship today! We pray that this time will be a blessing for you as God comes to you with his Word and promises, and as you offer him your thanks and praise.

The worship service is printed in this worship folder for you to follow along and participate. You’ll notice that the service is a dialogue between God and us, his people. The pastor speaks to God along with the congregation and also speaks the Word of God to the people. Those wishing to leave an offering can do so at the exit today or give online at www.GraceLutheranSAZ.org/give. (You can also scan the QR code to the right to access the online giving page.)

OUR WORSHIP SERIES A SAVIOR IS BORN

The first Christmas sermon was preached to a small congregation consisting entirely of shepherds. The preacher was an angel. The message of his sermon? “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you.”

That is a heavy word: Savior. It says as much about us as it does about this child. If the angel had said “a teacher has been born” or “a mentor has been born,” it would mean that within us exists the potential to fix all that is wrong with the world. It would mean we just need a bit of help: a coach, a mentor, a source of inspiration. But the angel said, “A Savior has been born.” If one needs saving, it means he is totally helpless completely lost doomed, without outside intervention. That is how God the Father viewed us: helpless, lost, doomed. So, he sent more than a coach. He sent his only Son to be our Savior.

After December 25 the secular world is done with Christmas. But for the Church, the season of Christmas has just begun. For twelve glorious days The Twelve Days of Christmas we ponder the nativity of the Son of God. We celebrate what that nativity means. A Savior is born!

The First Sunday After Christmas: A Savior Is Born to Be the True Son Epiphany Sunday (today): A Savior Is Born for All the Nations

A SAVIOR IS BORN FOR ALL THE NATIONS

The twelve days of Christmas culminate with the celebration of the Epiphany of our Lord. We commemorate the day when magi from afar worshiped the Christ Child. Before that day, Jesus had been worshiped by individuals of Jewish descent: the shepherds, elderly Simeon, the prophetess Anna. But Scripture said the coming Savior would be God's gift to all nations. Epiphany proves that God keeps his promises, as he miraculously led foreigners to worship their Savior. Thus, Epiphany is sometimes called the Gentile Christmas.

Epiphany continues to play out to this very day. God worked through a special star to bring the magi into the presence of their Savior for Christ’s glory and the magi’s blessing. Likewise, God has controlled time and space to bring you into the presence of your Savior for Christ's glory and your blessing. Thus, the magi were only the first in a long line of Gentiles who would join Israel in worshiping Jesus as King. Indeed, a Savior is born for all the nations! Come, let us adore him!

1

+ ORDER OF WORSHIP +

Today we celebrate the Epiphany or “appearing” of Jesus as the Savior of all nations. Epiphany falls on January 6 each year the Twelfth Day of the Christmas season. The Festival of the Epiphany of our Lord (also known as the Gentile Christmas) has been celebrated by the Church since the second century.

DIALOGUE FOR EPIPHANY

Genesis 1:1-4

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.

Genesis 3:6

Isaiah 60:2

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples.

Isaiah 9:2, 6

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 60:1

Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon us.

Psalm 27:2-3

Psalm 27:1

When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.

The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear?

John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 8:12

Matthew 2:2

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.

+ THE WORD +

PRAYER OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

Lord God, by the leading of a star, you once made known to the nations your one and only Son. Guide us, also, who know him now by faith to come at last to the perfect joy of your heavenly glory; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The prophet foretold that one born king of the Jews would draw kings from distant nations to the light of his glory.

FIRST READING

1

Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the L is dawning upon you.

2 Look, darkness covers the earth, and deep darkness covers the peoples, but the L will dawn upon you, and his glory will be seen over you.

3 Nations will walk to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

4

Look up. Look all around and see!

All of them have been gathered. They are coming to you.

Your sons will come from far away, and people will carry your daughters on their side.

5 Then you will look and be radiant.

Your heart will race with excitement and burst with joy. For great riches from the sea will be delivered to you. The wealth of the nations will come to you.

6 Caravans of camels will cover your land, young camels from Midian and Ephah.

All those from Sheba will come. They will carry gold and incense, and they will announce the good news of the praise of the L .

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Text: tr. The Lutheran Hymnal, 1941, alt.; Philipp Nicolai, 1556–1608, abr., adapt Tune: Philipp Nicolai, 1556–1608. Text and tune: Public domain.

St. Paul explains that people of all nations are united together as complete equals in the Savior’s kingdom of grace.

SECOND READING

2 Surely you have heard of the administration of God’s grace given to me for you, 3 namely, that the mystery was made known to me by revelation (as I have already written briefly). 4 When you read this, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ. 5 This mystery was not made known to people in past generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets. 6 This mystery is that in Christ Jesus the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and people who also share in the promise through the gospel.

7 I became a servant of this gospel, in keeping with the gift of God’s grace that was given to me by the working of his power. 8 To me even though I am the very least of all the saints was given this grace: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ 9 and to enlighten everyone about the administration of this mystery. In past ages this mystery remained hidden in God, who created all things. 10 He did this so that, through the church, the multifaceted wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was done according to the eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In him we can freely approach God with confidence through faith in him.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

We stand out of respect for the words of Christ, our Savior and King. The Gospel Acclamation points toward the words of the Gospel.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Matthew 2:2

Alleluia. Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him. Alleluia.

7
3:2-12
Ephesians

1

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, when Herod was king, Wise Men from the east came to Jerusalem. They asked, 2 “Where is he who has been born King of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 When King Herod heard this, he was alarmed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 He gathered together all the people’s chief priests and experts in the law. He asked them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, because this was written through the prophet:

6 You, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are certainly not least among the rulers of Judah: because out of you will come a ruler, who will shepherd my people, Israel.”

7 Then Herod secretly summoned the Wise Men and found out from them exactly when the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. When you find him, report to me, so that I may also go and worship him.”

9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. Then the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them, until it stood still over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with overwhelming joy. 11 After they went into the house and saw the child with Mary, his mother, they bowed down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 Since they had been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their own country by another route.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to you, O Christ.

record how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. We use his example prayer as part of our public worship, trusting that he will hear and answer our prayers.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

CONFESSION OF FAITH

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed

The Apostles’ Creed developed in the Early Christian Church as a personal confession of faith. It is so named because it confesses the faith taught by the Apostles of Jesus.

+ INSTALLATION OF MINISTRY BOARD +

St. Paul wrote: “Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”

The minister addresses those being installed: Dear brothers, you have been elected to use your gifts in special service in the Lord’s kingdom as members of the Ministry Board.

I now ask you in the presence of God and this assembly: Will you carry out your responsibilities faithfully to the glory of Christ and in service to his church? If so, answer: I will, and I ask God to help me.

I will, and I ask God to help me.

10

The minister addresses the congregation: Will you, brothers and sisters, support and pray for these men in the work in which you have elected them? If so, answer: We will, and we ask God to help us. We will, and we ask God to help us.

INSTALLATION

The minister addresses those being installed: I install you as members of the Ministry Board in the name of the Father and of the (+) Son and of the Holy Spirit.

PRAYER

Let us pray. Gracious Father, you call your people to service and give them various tasks in the world and in your church. Send down on the men being installed today your Holy Spirit, the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord. Grant grace and strength, that they may serve you faithfully to the glory of your name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The minister addresses those newly installed: Go, then, and take up the work to which you have been elected. May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

BLESSING

The Lord Almighty bless us and direct our days and our deeds in his peace. Amen. Please stand

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God and Mary’s Son, in the fullness of time you came into our world to save us from sin and death.

You ushered in the day of grace so long foretold.

Beloved Son of the Father, revered by the Magi, baptized by John, you came preaching and teaching, healing and comforting, forgiving and encouraging: You brought the light of life to those walking in darkness, and the joy of salvation to those doomed to death.

Brief intercessory prayers may be added in a fitting place.

Prince of peace, shine like a beacon for us and the people of our world. Let the good news of salvation be heard in the remotest corners of the earth. Open our own lips to speak your name to those around us who still live without faith or hope: Arouse us and our missionaries to flood the world with the light of your gospel.

Lord of the Church, let your peace rule our hearts that we may use our gifts to serve you and each other in willing gratitude and joy. Watch over our loved ones near and far, that they may remember your love and rejoice in your salvation. Strengthen the faith of the sick and the disheartened. Give hope to those in despair and comfort those who mourn.

Be gracious to all and lead us to reflect your love in everything we say and do.

Hear us, Lord, as we pray in silence.

Silent prayer

Finally, bring us and all your believers to the heavenly home where we will stand in the full light of your glory and with all your saints and angels sing the everlasting song of triumph.

Amen.

12

The blessing of Aaron has been spoken over God’s people for over 3,500 years. The L said, “In this way they will put my name on [them], and I will bless them.” Numbers 6:27

CLOSING PRAYER

Almighty God, we thank you for teaching us the things you want us to believe and do. Help us by your Holy Spirit to keep your Word in pure hearts that we may be strengthened in faith, guided in holiness, and comforted in life and in death, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Amen.

BLESSING

The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace.

Amen. Please be seated

Sunday Morning Bible Study

“God just wants me to be happy.” “God helps those who help themselves.” These and other popular, positive, catchy statements might sound good, but do they really fit with what the Bible says? We are currently working through the Bible study, “10 Lies About God.” This study will help us respond to false teachings about God and to defend what the Bible teaches. Now would be an excellent time to make this study a part of your Sunday routine! Class is held at 9:00 AM in the CLC gymnasium.

Youth Night: Tonight

Are you in high school? Then join your Christian peers from across Tucson for our next Youth Night! We will play fun games, eat comfort food, praise our Lord, and discuss "A Night of Godpliments." ANNOUNCEMENTS

Offering Envelope Delay

Many Grace members and friends receive a monthly mailing of offering envelopes that they use for their giving to support the ministry of our congregation. The envelopes for January, which would normally be received in late December, were delayed. We have learned that a long-time employee of the company that mails the envelopes passed away suddenly and that the company is working hard to handle this situation. The January mailing of envelopes should be received sometime this week (January 9-14). In the meantime, an offering placed in any envelope marked with your envelope number will be recorded. Members and friends who set up automatic offerings through Grace’s online giving do not need to rely on the monthly mailing, but are welcome to receive them for any additional or special gifts. If you have any questions, please contact the Grace Central Office or our Financial Manager (finance@gracelutheransaz.org).

Divine Call Updates

At our Annual Meeting on Sunday, December 11, Grace extended three Divine Calls for Mission Teachers at our Child Learning Center.

One call has been declined. Theresa Pratt, who currently serves at Beautiful Savior Lutheran School in Cincinnati, OH, has accepted our call. Watch for more details on when she will arrive, likely this summer.

The third call continues to be held by Christine Leathers. Please keep her in your prayers as she deliberates whether to accept our call and to move her ministry here to southern Arizona or to decline our call and continue serving in her current location. Feel free to communicate with her any information that you feel may be helpful in her deliberation at: chleathers@trinitykiel.com or (920)286 -6074.

Monday Evening Service

Our Monday evening worship service here at Grace-Sahuarita resumes tomorrow, January 9. Monday evening services at 6:00 PM are scheduled to continue through the spring. This service provides another alternative for those who may not be able to worship on Sunday. Members who regularly worship at any Grace sites are welcome to make use of this weeknight service.

Wednesday Bible Study

The Bible Project: The 66 books of the Bible are a collection of history, poetry, prophesy and insights into the eternal history of God and his people. The focus of the entire Bible is God’s plan of salvation. However because of the sheer volume of the Bible, many people get bogged down trying to read it and understand it. This Bible Project is a study that quickly summarizes each book and give the student a quick overview of the Bible. Please join us on Wednesday 10:00 AM in Church Entryway.
