LOOKING AFT A Pier Without Peer

From the Editor

October brings a different kind of energy to the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. Cooler days and autumn colors set the scene for family gatherings, friendly competition and evenings spent enjoying the Club together. From fall festivities to the return of favorite indoor activities, there is plenty to keep us connected throughout the season. This month’s cover captures that spirit with a moment of family fun at our Fall Family Festival, photographed by John F. Martin Photography. It is a reminder that some of our favorite Club memories come from simply spending time together. Inside this issue of The Grosse Pointer, we celebrate an exciting finish to our Cornhole League and reflect on Fleet Review 2026. We also look ahead to October events, including Pours & Prophecies and our adults-only Tower of Terror. Whether you enjoy friendly competition, a night out or an opportunity to try something new, I hope you’ll find a reason to join us this month. As always, The Grosse Pointer reflects the people, experiences and traditions that make GPYC special. If you have a story to share, a milestone to celebrate, a business to highlight or an interest in advertising in a future issue, I would love to hear from you. Enjoy this month’s issue, and I look forward to seeing you around the Club as we make the most of autumn together.

Commodore's What a Great Summer! What a great summer at the Club! Our signature programming remained strong, with Mother’s Day, Back to the Club, Boating Festival, the Rendezvous Series, Day Camp, Fishing Camp, Fleet Review and many other events all sold out or near capacity. It was great to see so many members enjoying everything GPYC has to offer. I want to thank our entire summer staff for a great season! Our Day Camp, sailing, swim team, pool and Harborside teams all worked hard to ensure our members could enjoy the Club to its fullest. Our harbor had another great season as well, finishing with a 92% occupancy rate. A special thank you to our Harbormaster, Alex Turner, and his fantastic team for keeping the harbor in top condition and taking such great care of our members. Our summer did not go without its challenges. We experienced three power outages this year, including one that significantly disrupted the Club. As a result, we are evaluating and pricing generator options. Covering the clubhouse and covering the entire campus are very different projects, with very different costs. A recommendation, along with firm quotes, will be presented to the Board. The right question is which option best protects the Club and our members, not simply how much it costs. In addition, our Facilities and Harbor teams are developing disaster-recovery plans so that the next outage is a managed event rather than a scramble. Our fall activities are already underway! Be sure to come down to the Bowling Center for open bowling, and keep an eye on The Weekly Buzz for all the fun activities we have planned this fall. I am also very pleased to share that we have welcomed 55 new members so far this year! This is a tremendous accomplishment, but we cannot let up. Please take advantage of the fall season to continue promoting the Club to your friends, neighbors and colleagues. Membership is the key to the long-term success and future of GPYC, and every one of us plays a role in bringing new members into our Club. Finally, please save the dates next month and plan to attend two very important Club events. Our wonderful Veterans Day Brunch is Sunday, November 8, followed by our always informative Annual Meeting on Thursday, November 12. The Annual Meeting is also when we recognize our Member of the Year, Yachtsman of the Year and Employee of the Year. These are special honors, and I encourage everyone to join us as we celebrate the individuals who have made such a positive impact on our Club. As we head into fall, thank you again for making this such a successful summer. I look forward to seeing everyone around the Club! Full Speed Ahead!

Manager

Dear Members, It is a pleasure to introduce myself to you as the Interim General Manager/COO of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. While I have only been at GPYC for a short time, I have already had the opportunity to meet many members and staff, and I am grateful for the warm welcome I have received. For those I have not yet had the chance to meet, I have spent more than 30 years in the private club industry, most recently serving for 15 years as General Manager/COO of the Woman’s Athletic Club of Chicago. I grew up in nearby St. Clair Shores and began my private club career at the Renaissance Club in Detroit. I have known and worked with Strategic Club Solutions for many years, and I was pleased when they asked me to assist GPYC during this period of transition. I arrive at the Club at an exciting time of year. While another busy summer season has come to a close, there is certainly no shortage of activity ahead. Fall programming is underway, including open bowling in the Bowling Center, and October brings several great Club traditions. Halloween festivities will feature two member favorites, with both the Adult Halloween Party and Children’s Halloween Party taking place on Friday, October 23. Our boating members will also close out the 2026 rendezvous season with a trip to Fort Lauderdale for the International Boat Show, including a special group dinner at Lauderdale Yacht Club on Thursday, October 29. Looking a little further ahead, I encourage you to save the date for the Club’s Annual Meeting on Thursday, November 12, beginning at 6:00 p.m. The Annual Meeting is an important opportunity to reflect on the past year, recognize several members and employees for their contributions to GPYC, and look ahead to the Club’s future. During my time at GPYC, my goal is straightforward: to work closely with the Commodore, Board of Directors, and our staff to ensure that the Club continues to provide an exceptional experience for our members while supporting a smooth transition to GPYC’s next General Manager. Most importantly, I look forward to getting to know you. If you see me around the Club, please stop and introduce yourself. I hope to meet as many members as possible in the weeks and months ahead. I look forward to a great fall at GPYC.

From the

Boardroom

By Secretary Christopher Izzi

The Board continues to focus on the Club’s financial performance, membership, facility needs, and several initiatives aimed at strengthening the member experience and planning for the future. The Board reviewed the latest membership activity, which included five new members, one reinstatement, four resignations, and 11 membership transfers. The Board also discussed Gold Card policies, including sponsorship and background check requirements, and referred the matter to the Membership Committee for further review. July delivered strong operating results, with approximately $124,000 in operating income, finishing approximately $40,000 ahead of budget despite the impact of the Fourth of July power outage. Food & Beverage recovered well throughout the remainder of the month, with favorable results also reported in Harbor, Clubhouse/Maintenance, and Day Camp operations. Through July, the Club’s year-to-date operating loss was approximately $502,000, or approximately $176,000 unfavorable to budget. Management’s current forecast projects a fiscal-year operating loss of approximately $531,000. The Club’s investment balance at the end of July was approximately $5.8 million, and Finance will begin receiving a monthly schedule detailing funds moving into and out of the investment accounts to provide greater visibility into cash flow. The Board also received an update on the search for an external marketing partner. Following an initial review of several firms, Frontier 3 and Champagne Agency made in-person presentations to the marketing subcommittee, with Reach Detroit identified as an additional firm to complete the review process. Once the final presentation is complete, the subcommittee will provide its recommendation to the Board. Work also continues on the Annual Member Survey through Club Benchmarking, with additional questions and revisions currently being finalized. Club Benchmarking is also expected to conduct a 360-degree review of the GPYC management team in conjunction with the survey. Facility discussions included generator options, elevator repairs, kitchen equipment and systems replacement, hot water tank replacement, and landscaping. Centennial planning also continues as the Club works with the project team, contractors, and outside legal counsel to further evaluate design considerations, construction obligations, and timing. Fundraising has reached approximately $1.3 million, with 19 of the initial 20 Burgee Program opportunities secured at $50,000 each. Additional fundraising opportunities are also being explored. The Board received updates from the Harbor and Membership Activities committees, including the successful conclusion of Fleet Review Weekend and upcoming Club activities. Director Gleason also provided an update on Beacon, GPYC’s artificial intelligence initiative, which remains focused on building a communications knowledge base. The Board discussed security, data encryption, and enterprise licensing considerations, with additional information to be provided as the initiative develops.

Day Camp

Farewell

By Caelin Micks

The 2026 Day Camp season was a busy one! This year, we increased our capacity to 75 campers. We were at maximum capacity every week and had a great group of kids all summer long. Each week had a new theme and something different to look forward to. Themes included Sports & Team Games, Science & Discovery, Red, White & Blue Fun, Arts & Creativity, Outdoor Adventure & Fitness, Building & Engineering, Water Fun & Summer Games, and Camp Favorites Week. Campers spent their days swimming, doing crafts, playing tennis and bowling, and spending time with friends. We also added some new activities this summer. Campers cooked with Chef, participated in Music & Movement, and enjoyed new assemblies like Jim and Basketball Jones. We also brought back some of our favorite classic assemblies, like the Foam Party. This summer came with plenty of challenges. We dealt with the lettuce parasite, power outages, poor air quality and smoke, glass in the pool, summer storms, and heat waves. There was always something going on! Thank you to our camp families for being patient and flexible when things did not go as planned. At the end of the day, the kids loved coming to camp. They made friends, tried new things, and had a lot of fun along the way. A huge thank you to our counselors for all of their hard work this summer. They brought great energy to camp each day, and we are so proud of the team we had this year. Thank you to all of our Day Camp families for trusting us with your children. We are already looking forward to next summer!

Harbor

Happenings

By Alex Turner

As we reach the end of another wonderful boating season, the Harbor Staff would like to thank all our members for a fantastic summer on the water! As the boat wells begin to clear for the season, we have a few important reminders to help us prepare the harbor for the off-season. Please make sure all lines, hoses, and other items are removed from your boat well. Harbor Staff will need clear wells to install the ice eater bubblers and complete necessary maintenance throughout the winter. Additionally, annual inspections and maintenance will be performed on the power pedestals, so please be sure to remove your power cords as well. Both the East and West Bridges are enabled and will remain in the open position to allow boat traffic to pass through. If you cross either bridge, please remember to open it back up afterward for boat traffic. The projected shutdown date for the fuel dock is November 1, at which time the water will also be turned off and pumpouts will be completed. Depending on weather conditions, the water may be shut off approximately one week earlier. Please also remember to schedule in-well pumpouts for Monday–Thursday only. Looking ahead to next season, please keep an eye out for your dock contract renewal through Dockwa. If you have not already done so, please send proof of boat ownership, such as a title or state registration, along with your vessel insurance listing GPYC as an additional insured, to Alex Turner at aturner@gpyc.org. Finally, a big thank you from the entire Harbor Staff for another wonderful boating season! We hope you enjoyed your time on the water and at the Club this summer. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for another great season next year!

Squatober: 31 Days to Stronger Legs

October is Squatober! Squats are one of the simplest and most effective exercises you can add to your routine. They strengthen your legs, glutes, and core while helping to improve balance, stability, mobility, and muscular endurance. Strong legs can make everyday activities easier — from getting up and down from a chair to climbing stairs, walking, and carrying things. Regular strength exercises like squats can also help support healthy movement and independence as we get older. The best part? We're starting small and building up throughout the month! Do the day's reps at your own pace, and take breaks when you need them. Quality over quantity! Don't worry about doing every rep in one set. Break them up, modify the movement, or use a chair for support if needed. Most importantly, have fun and stick with it! By the end of the month, you'll have built strength, consistency, and a pretty impressive squat streak. Questions? Email me at pwendzinski@gpyc.org.

Culinary

Excellence

By Eric Voigt

A Taste of Autumn As the crisp air marks the arrival of autumn, the culinary team at Grosse Pointe Yacht Club is embracing everything the season has to offer. For Chef Eric, fall is an opportunity to bring richer flavors, seasonal ingredients and a little creativity to the table — with squash taking center stage this October. From delicata and butternut to acorn, kabocha and pumpkin, squash offers incredible versatility in the kitchen. Throughout the season, members can expect to see these autumn favorites incorporated in a variety of ways, from roasted delicata and butternut squash bruschetta and squash fritters with herbed yogurt to creamy bisques and stuffed acorn squash. Maple-glazed kabocha, pumpkin tarts and spiced squash pies bring the flavors of fall through to the final course. October also brings several opportunities for Chef Eric and the culinary team to have a little fun. On October 2, GPYC will turn back the clock for a Ron Burgundy-themed evening, inspired by the unmistakable style of the 1970s. Seasonal appetizers, handcrafted cocktails and specialty stations will create an interactive dining experience, complemented by Scotch, cigars, trivia and plenty of nostalgia. The celebration continues on October 4 with a full day of fall festivities for the entire family. Members can enjoy classic autumn activities, including pumpkin painting and carving, apple bobbing, cornhole, scavenger hunts and seasonal crafts. Of course, no fall celebration would be complete without cider and donuts. Later that evening, the focus turns to football as GPYC hosts its first Lions Tailgate of the season, featuring the return of Chef Eric’s Second Annual Chili Cook-Off. It’s a chance to bring together two fall favorites — football and great food — as the culinary team kicks off another season of Lions football at the Club. Whether it’s a comforting bowl of chili, a creative take on seasonal squash or an evening built around food, drinks and fun, Chef Eric and his team are embracing the flavors that make fall special. We look forward to welcoming members to the table and sharing a taste of the season all October long.

Friendly

Competition

By Shane Ferris & Gordy Woods

Let the Good Times Roll! The GPYC Cornhole League wrapped up with an incredible final night as the Body Baggers—Dan Morrison and Alessandro McMann—won every game they needed to secure first place. Their impressive finish earned them the top spot over the Salty Bags, Marco McMann and Brad Samuels, who took second place. Our cornhole ladies brought plenty of fun and friendly competition each week, improving their skills throughout the season and picking up some wins over the men along the way! By popular request, the competition will continue with a winter tournament in the Ballroom. Stay tuned for details and another chance to toss your way to victory!

Club

Highlights

What a Weekend to Remember! Fleet Review weekend brought GPYC members together for three days of family fun, dockside creativity and cherished Club traditions.

The festivities began Thursday with Family Fun Night, setting the stage for a weekend of celebration. On Friday, the harbor came alive with dock parties as members transformed their spaces with imaginative themes and decorations. A spectacular fireworks display capped off the evening. The Mamma Mia-themed celebration on the East Wall, Lakeview, Shoreline and Tee Docks won the cockatil contest with their Dancing Queen Special. The Top Gun-themed displays on the South Wall and Lakeside received recognition for Best Decorated Theme Dock, while Be Our Gust on Tee Dock took the honor for Best Decorated Boat. Thank you to everyone who brought their creativity and enthusiasm to the harbor! Saturday began with the annual Fishing Rodeo before members gathered for Fleet Review. At the MAC, Commodore Schaden, Vice Commodore Knapp and Rear Commodore Sobolewski, joined by their families, reviewed the participating fleet and saluted each boat as it passed. The procession offered a proud celebration of GPYC’s boating community and the traditions at the heart of our Club. With the formalities complete, the celebration continued into the evening as members gathered to enjoy one another’s company and close out a memorable weekend. Thank you to the members, families, staff and volunteers whose participation made Fleet Review 2026 such a special occasion.

Looking

Aft

By Past Commodore James L. Ramsey

A Pier Without Peer It was long and narrow, made of wood and stretched over a thousand feet into Lake St. Clair. It was a dock, yes; but more than that, it was a structure that helped shape the early years of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. The Grosse Pointe Shores Municipal Pier was the brainchild of Shores Mayor George Osius, who had presided over the village since it was founded four years earlier, in 1911. As first mayor of the new municipality, Osius aspired to make his tiny community more than a collection of ribbon farms and summer homes. To do that, he needed to attract new kinds of residents—everyday homeowners who would settle the area in numbers, pay taxes, make Grosse Pointe Shores prosperous and develop it into a pleasant bedroom community to the industrialized city of Detroit. A growing residential suburb of industrial Detroit. The enterprising mayor recognized that Grosse Pointe Shores needed some kind of distinguishing feature, an attraction that would make out-oftowners want to stop there and look around. But how to do that in 1915? Grosse Pointe Shores was an unknown entity. There was no commercial radio or television to promote the place, and about the only way to reach it was by trolley or horse and buggy. The answer, Osius hoped, was the water—in the form of passenger ships like Tashmoo, Greyhound and Frank E. Kirby that carried hundreds of Detroiters on weekend excursions onto the lake and up the St. Clair River. If a dock could be constructed far out into the lake where the water was deep enough for the steamers to stop and tie up, passengers would invariably wander ashore and discover Grosse Pointe Shores. The pier would also give Shores residents access to the lake. Mayor Osius sold his plan to the Shores Village Council and the pier was built. Over time, it stretched a quarter mile into the lake and was the Shores’ most striking manmade feature.

The idea of the pier as a real estate marketing tool was far-fetched, and there is little evidence that many steamers actually stopped there. But the dock did attract the attention of boaters who were members of the newly formed Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. The Club had no presence on the lake back then; but by renting space along the pier, GPYC boaters had a year-round place where they could tie up their craft and congregate. The location of the pier coincided with an older, smaller dock at Vernier’s Roadhouse. The Vernier property would eventually become part of the footprint for the new GPYC clubhouse and harbor in 1929, and the path of the municipal pier would mark the southern boundary of the harbor. When the harbor expanded south decades later, the path bisected the Club property and now forms the main walkway to the lift bridge and East Wall. History is far from the minds of those who walk the route today, but the remnants of our past are there. It is recorded that when workers were building the seawall of the harbor more than ninety years ago, they encountered a “dolphin” (a bundle of pilings cabled together to form one really big piling) that served to anchor the east end of the municipal pier. Those pilings were so firmly rooted in the lakebed, the builders elected to run the steel seawall around the obstacle, rather than remove it. The “bulge” in the East Wall caused by the tenacious Shores Pier is visible today. It’s a silent but enduring reminder of the pier that shaped our history.
