LOOKING AFT Our Club hosted the "Powerboat Race of the Century"
From the Editor
As the leaves begin to fall and the crisp November air settles over Lake St. Clair, there is something especially beautiful about this time of year at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. While boats are being tucked away for the winter and another wonderful boating season comes to a close, the Clubhouse is preparing for one of my favorite times of the year — the holiday season! November is a month of gratitude, reflection and tradition. As we look back on another memorable year at GPYC, I am reminded that what makes our Club so special isn't just our beautiful surroundings or the incredible events we host. It's the people, friendships and memories that continue to bring generations of families together. We have plenty to look forward to this month, from our Veterans Day Brunch and Annual Meeting to our Holiday Boutique and Tree Lighting Ceremony. Before we know it, the Clubhouse will be filled with twinkling lights, festive decorations and the magic of the holiday season! As always, The Grosse Pointer reflects the people, experiences and traditions that make GPYC special. If you have a story to share, a milestone to celebrate, a business to highlight or an interest in advertising in a future issue, I would love to hear from you. Wishing you and your families a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with love, laughter and gratitude. Enjoy this month's issue, and I look forward to seeing you around the Club as we welcome the holiday season together.

Commodore's What a Year it has been!
As I reflect on the past year, I am incredibly proud of our Club and excited about where we are headed. I want to thank our members, Past Commodores, Board of Directors, committee members, and, of course, our amazing staff for all of your support throughout the year. Speaking of our staff, we are truly blessed to be greeted by smiling faces at every turn, from the front gate, front desk, harbor to the dining room. Their dedication and commitment make a real difference in the experience we enjoy as members, and I am grateful for everything they do.
Our Centennial Project continues to move forward, highlighted by our event last month with the Founders and the GPYC Foundation. Thank you to everyone who has made a commitment to support this important initiative through our 501(c)(3) Foundation. To date, more than $1.6 million has been committed! This is an exciting milestone and a testament to the pride our members have in the future of our Club. Last month, the Board also welcomed our neighbors from Lochmoor to a cocktail reception. More than 50 guests attended, and our hospitality was warmly received. The Board has approved dining access for Lochmoor members on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. So, if you see a new face around the Club, please take a moment to introduce yourself and make them feel welcome. November is another important month at GPYC. Please join us for our Veterans Day Brunch on Sunday, November 8, followed by our always-informative Annual Meeting on Thursday, November 12. The Annual Meeting is also when we recognize our Member of the Year, Yachtsman of the Year, and Employee of the Year. These are special honors, and I encourage everyone to attend as we celebrate the individuals who have made such a positive impact on our Club. And right around the corner is our Commodores Ball on Saturday, December 5! A fabulous evening is planned as we celebrate Commodore Bruce and Lady Chris Knapp. Be sure to make your reservations for what promises to be a wonderful night. In closing, I want to thank my family for their constant support and encouragement, and most importantly, my amazing wife, Amy Lynn. When we decided years ago to take this journey together, we knew we both had to be fully committed to the betterment of our Club. It has been a privilege, and one I could not have undertaken without her support. At the end of the day, we are all caretakers of this special club. Our responsibility is to build on the strong foundation laid by those who came before us, continue to make GPYC better, and leave it in an even stronger position for the generations who will follow. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your Commodore. It has been an honor. Full Speed Ahead!

Manager
Dear Members, As the boating season comes to a close and the last of the boats leave our harbor, we begin looking ahead to the colder months and the many traditions that make this time of year at GPYC so special. Since arriving at GPYC, I have truly enjoyed getting to know our members and staff. I am grateful for the warm welcome I have received and appreciate everyone who has taken the time to introduce themselves, share their thoughts about the Club, and make me feel at home. My time here has also given me an opportunity to learn more about our operations and, most importantly, listen to our members. Those observations and conversations are helping us formulate plans to continue improving the member experience and position the Club for continued success. November will be a busy month at GPYC. We begin with our Veterans Day Brunch on Sunday, November 8, at 10:00 a.m. This is always a special Club tradition and an opportunity to recognize and honor the veterans within GPYC and the surrounding community. I also encourage all members to attend our Annual Meeting on Thursday, November 12. Voting begins at 4:00 p.m. in the General Manager’s office, dinner begins at 7:00 p.m., and the Annual Meeting will begin promptly at 8:00 p.m. The Annual Meeting is an important opportunity to reflect on the past year, recognize members and employees who have made significant contributions to GPYC, and look ahead to the future of our Club. Another favorite GPYC tradition returns with our Holiday Boutique. The Boutique will be held Wednesday, November 18, from 5:30–9:00 p.m. and Thursday, November 19, from 2:00–8:00 p.m. It is a wonderful way to begin the holiday season at the Club, do a little shopping, and spend time with fellow members. Be sure to make your dinner reservations. I am also pleased to welcome two new members of our management team. Samantha Koukios joins us as Membership Director, and Cynthia “Cindy” Methric joins us as Catering Sales Manager. Both bring strong hospitality and sales backgrounds to GPYC, and I am confident they will be wonderful additions to our team. Please take a moment to introduce yourself and welcome Samantha and Cindy when you see them around the Club. Thanksgiving will soon be upon us as well. Whether you plan to celebrate with us at the Club, with Thanksgiving dinner reservations available in 15-minute increments from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., or take advantage of our Thanksgiving carryout offerings at home, our culinary and service teams look forward to being part of your family’s celebration. As we enter the holiday season, I want to thank our members for their continued support of GPYC and our employees for everything they do each day for the Club. There is much to look forward to in the weeks ahead, and I hope you will take advantage of all that GPYC has to offer this fall and holiday season. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

From the
Boardroom
By Secretary Christopher Izzi
At its September meeting, the Board focused on financial performance, planning for the coming fiscal year, maintaining Club facilities, and extending support to our neighbors at Lochmoor Club. Financial Performance and Budget Planning
Through August, the Club reported a year-to-date operating loss of $544,138, approximately $174,000 unfavorable to budget. August results were approximately $7,700 unfavorable to budget, including $12,000 in power outage remediation costs. The projected year-end operating loss was approximately $579,000. The Board approved the fiscal year 2027 budget, subject to a thorough review following the hiring of a new General Manager. The 2027 capital expenditure plan was scheduled for consideration in October. An insurance claim related to the July Fourth weekend power outages remains in progress. The Club is also reviewing its insurance coverage, including potential business interruption exposure. Welcoming Our Lochmoor Neighbors
Following the devastating fire at Lochmoor Club, the Board unanimously approved temporary dining privileges for Lochmoor members on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, along with access to private event spaces, through December 31, 2026. Dining reservations are required and subject to availability. Facilities and Seasonal Preparations
Recent facility improvements include replacement of hot water storage tanks and installation of a new three-door cooler. Planning also addressed a new Ballroom railing and pool equipment improvements. With the boating season winding down, Harborside Grill winterization is underway, and harbor winterization is scheduled for November 2. Centennial Planning
The Centennial Committee continues to evaluate project scope, costs, and operational needs while pursuing fundraising and limiting out-of-pocket expenses. Fundraising was reported at approximately $1.3 million. Additional updates will be shared as plans develop. Membership and Member Feedback
The Board approved membership transfers, a surviving spouse membership, and seven resignations. September full membership equivalents were reported at 467.8. Preparations for the annual member survey through Club Benchmarking were also reviewed. Member feedback will help guide priorities and future improvements to the Club experience.

Afraid of Getting Bulky?
Relax
Let's talk about one of the biggest fitness myths: "I don't lift heavy weights because I don't want to get bulky." Apparently, picking up a dumbbell will turn you into a bodybuilder overnight. If only building muscle were that easy! We'd all be winning bodybuilding competitions by the new year. The truth? Lifting weights doesn't automatically make you bulky. Muscle growth depends on genetics, nutrition, hormones, training, and recovery. 1. Genetics Matter
Ever wonder why some people build muscle faster than others? Genetics influence your muscle size, shape, distribution, and response to training. Two people can follow the same workout program and get very different results. 2. Calories Matter, Too
Building muscle requires adequate energy and protein. A calorie surplus- eating more calories than your body burns- can support muscle growth, but it's not always necessary, especially for beginners or people returning to training. Extra calories don't automatically become muscle. Without appropriate training, some may be stored as fat. So no, one extra serving of pasta isn't going to turn your biceps into boulders. 3. Your Workout Matters
Training volume, progressive overload, and recovery all influence muscle growth. Research from the American College of Sports Medicine supports resistance training for improving strength and muscle size. Let's be realistic: your 20-minute Peloton ride isn't turning your legs into Saquon Barkley's overnight. He's a professional athlete who has spent years developing his strength, power, and physique. 4. Women Don't Need to Fear the Weights
Women have lower testosterone levels than men on average, which influences typical muscle-building potential. Building a noticeably muscular physique generally takes sustained, goal-directed training. You won't accidentally become a competitive bodybuilder because you picked up heavier dumbbells. 5. Don't Fear the Scale!
You start working out, feel stronger, and notice your clothes fitting differently. Then the scale goes up, and suddenly you're questioning everything. Muscle is denser than fat, meaning the same weight of muscle takes up less space than the same weight of fat. You can lose body fat, build muscle, and look leaner while your weight stays the same or even increases slightly. Your weight can also fluctuate because of water retention, hormones, and glycogen storage. The scale measures total body weight, not body composition. Pay attention to your strength, how your clothes fit, your energy, and changes over time. The scale is a measuring tool, not a report card on your progress. The Bottom Line
Genetics, calorie intake, training, hormones, and recovery all influence muscle growth. Lifting weights is a tool- not a one-way ticket to becoming the Hulk. Lift to become stronger, support your health, and improve your body composition. You don't have to get smaller at all costs to make progress. Remember: if building muscle were as easy as touching a dumbbell, everyone carrying laundry baskets would look like a professional bodybuilder. 13

A Chef’s November Reflections: Thanksgiving on the Water in Grosse Pointe
As November settles over Lake St. Clair, the air turns crisp, the sunsets deepen into shades of amber and rose, and the shoreline of Grosse Pointe takes on a quiet, dignified beauty. For me, as a chef, this is one of the most inspiring times of the year that invites both tradition and creativity. Preparing Thanksgiving aboard a yacht in this setting is unlike any other culinary experience. It’s intimate yet grand, familiar yet touched by the romance of the water. Cooking on the water requires a different mindset. Space is more precious, timing is more deliberate, and every dish must be thoughtfully planned to ensure it can be executed smoothly in a galley kitchen. But these constraints often lead to more intentional cooking—flavors are concentrated, plating is more refined, and the meal becomes a curated experience rather than a sprawling buffet. In the Grosse Pointe area, we’re fortunate to have access to exceptional local ingredients that shine in a Thanksgiving menu. Michigan’s late-season root vegetables—carrots, parsnips, and beets—bring earthy sweetness. Crisp orchard apples and tart cranberries add brightness. Fresh sage, rosemary, and thyme, often still fragrant in November, infuse dishes with the comforting aromas of the season. These ingredients not only taste incredible but also connect us to the land and waters that define our community. For the main course, I often prepare a roasted turkey roulade rather than a whole bird. Rolled with a savory sage and apple stuffing, it cooks evenly, slices beautifully, and fits perfectly in a yacht oven. A cider reduction glaze adds a gentle tang that pairs wonderfully with the richness of the meat. Alongside, I serve a velvety butternut squash purée, its natural sweetness enhanced with a touch of smoked maple syrup, and a wild rice pilaf studded with dried cherries and toasted pecans—a nod to Michigan’s agricultural heritage. Side dishes are where I like to weave in both tradition and surprise. Roasted Brussels sprouts tossed with maple and pecans bring a caramelized crunch, while a salad of shaved fennel, apple, and pomegranate seeds offers a refreshing counterpoint to the heavier flavors. For bread, warm rosemary focaccia is perfect for soaking up gravies and sauces. Dessert is where the lake inspires me most. I often serve a pumpkin tart with a gingersnap crust, topped with whipped cream lightly sweetened with local honey. The tart’s spiced aroma mingles with the scent of mulled wine simmering on the stove—a blend of red wine, cinnamon, cloves, and orange peel that warms guests from the inside out. For those who prefer something lighter, poached pears in Riesling with a drizzle of caramel sauce make for an elegant alternative. Dining aboard during Thanksgiving is about more than the food, it’s about the atmosphere. The gentle sway of the yacht, the reflection of cabin lights on the water, and the laughter of friends and family create a sense of connection that’s hard to replicate on land. Whether docked at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club or anchored just offshore, the holiday becomes a celebration of gratitude not only for the people around the table but for the place itself. Thanksgiving here is a reminder that luxury isn’t always about extravagance—it’s about savoring the moment, honoring the season, and letting the beauty of Lake St. Clair be part of the feast. On the water, every bite feels more intentional, every toast more heartfelt, and every memory more enduring.

Highlights Doggy Splash Day! Sunday, September 20
We wrapped up another wonderful pool season at GPYC with one of our favorite traditions — Doggy Splash Day! Our four-legged friends took over the pool for one last splash, enjoying an afternoon of swimming, playing and plenty of tail-wagging fun! From enthusiastic swimmers to pups who preferred to lounge poolside, there was no shortage of adorable moments as our furry members helped us officially say goodbye to summer. A special thank you to Beans and Bowline Financial for generously sponsoring this year's event and helping make it such a memorable day for our members and their pups! Thank you to everyone who joined us for this pawsitively fun tradition! While the pool is now closed for the season, we're already looking forward to more sunshine, swimming and summer memories next year. Until then, we'll leave the splashing to our four-legged friends! See you poolside in 2027!

Members enjoyed an evening of exceptional wines and fine dining at our recent Far Niente Wine Dinner. Celebrating nearly 150 years of Napa Valley winemaking history, the evening showcased the craftsmanship, tradition and dedication to excellence that have made Far Niente Wine Estates one of the most respected names in the wine industry. The evening began with a welcoming glass of 2022 Domaine Carneros Brut, followed by a carefully curated selection of wines, including Far Niente Chardonnay, En Route Pinot Noir and Bella Union Cabernet Sauvignon. A highlight of the evening was the dual Cabernet Sauvignon pairing with the entrée, featuring Nickel & Nickel's Vaca Vista Vineyard and Far Niente's renowned Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. The experience concluded on a sweet note with Dolce Late Harvest Semillon. Each wine offered guests a unique taste of Napa Valley's celebrated vineyards, complemented by an elegant dining experience. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this wonderful evening of exceptional wine, delicious cuisine and great company. We look forward to sharing more memorable wine experiences with our members!

By Past Commodore James L. Ramsey
Our Club hosted the "Powerboat Race of the Century" Life for many Americans during the Great Depression of the 1930s was a forlorn, uncertain existence. Millions of people were unemployed, money was scarce and what little people earned went for essentials: food, clothing, a roof over one’s head. Little, if anything, was left for entertainment. The family radio provided escape with offerings like The Jack Benny Program and The Amos ‘n’ Andy Show, but it wasn’t enough. The public needed something real and lasting to divert attention from the world they lived in.
Kaye Don and his mechanic stand on the bow of their boat, next to the breakwater of the Joy boathouse (now Crescent Sail Yacht Club), Miss England III's home port during the race.
The answer came in the form of a race between the two fastest powerboats in the world on Lake St. Clair. Thirteen members of GPYC would serve on the event’s governing bodies; The Club would sponsor the event, which would pass right in front of the harbor. The Harmsworth Cup Race, as it was named, featured two wealthy international sportsmen for whom the Depression was a distant issue. Detroiter Gar Wood, who had achieved fame with his Packard-powered Miss America race boats, would go against Englishman Kaye Don in the formidable Miss England III, propelled by two massive Rolls-Royce engines mounted behind the driver.
Gar Wood's Miss America X, most likely being photographed from the air.
The crowd must have been holding its collective breath when it looked as if Miss England III would carry the day.
The race, held in September 1932, was unquestionably the largest sporting event ever in this area. Attendance along the shore numbered in the hundreds of thousands. Lake Shore Road was closed from Fisher Road to Nine Mile. Boats crammed with spectators appeared out of nowhere to witness the battle from the water. The weather for the first heat was unfavorably choppy and Gar Wood’s Miss America X was having handling and mechanical problems, not the least of which was a leaking fuel line that covered him in high-octane gasoline. A backfire from any of the four front-mounted Packard V-12s would have incinerated Wood, his co-pilot and the boat, but he refused to back off. Meanwhile, Kaye Don had used Miss England’s power advantage to open up a substantial lead until he, too, began having problems and his speed dropped, allowing Wood to catch up and eventually pass him for the win. Unbeknownst to Mr. Don, the rough water had also knocked an opening in the hull. On the way back to nearby Henry Joy boathouse where she was headquartered (now Crescent Sail Yacht Club), the boat began to sink. With assistance, Miss England managed to reach safety but was too badly damaged to repair in time for the next day’s heat. A day and a half later, Miss England rejoined the contest, but her engines quickly failed and Gar Wood was declared the Harmsworth Trophy winner. Three weeks afterward, perhaps to mitigate his default victory, Wood took Miss America X to a world water speed record of 125 mph on the St. Clair River.
