Welcome to our August issue!

This month’s cover photo, captured beautifully by John F. Martin Photography, features Oliver the Sloth from our friends at GP Zoology. Did you know sloths can sleep up to 15 hours a day? They may seem like lazy animals, but in our fast-paced lives, it's a gentle reminder to take a step back and move slowly—like Oliver— so we can truly appreciate the beautiful moments around us, both here at the Club and at home.

As we soak in the summer sun and enjoy our time together, let's cherish these moments and create lasting memories. Whether you're participating in Club activities, enjoying a quiet afternoon by the water, or spending time with loved ones, remember to savor every moment.

Advertise in our upcoming Grosse Pointer issues! With a distribution of over 700 member households, it's a prime opportunity to showcase your business to fellow members.

Here’s to a wonderful August filled with relaxation, joy, and the simple pleasures of life. Happy reading!

Commodore's Corner

The summer months are flying by, and attendance at Club events and amenities has been fantastic. However, availability can be limited, so please remember to make a reservation.

Chef Eric and his team deserve a pat on the back when you see them. They have put in long hours and crafted some truly special items on the menu. You just can’t get enough of their Bang Bang Shrimp! The Bartenders' Summer Drink Contest is still ongoing, and the competition is close. It's inspiring to see the creativity in their mixology.

Looking ahead to the Fleet Review this month, it remains the biggest party of the summer. Space is at a premium, so please make your reservations now if you haven't already. This year's theme is Margaritaville, featuring boat decorating contests, dock parties, and the Saturday evening dinner party. It caps off the summer at the Club and is an event that creates lasting memories.

The fall couples' trip plans are being finalized. We'll be heading out east to Mystic Seaport and Block Island in Connecticut, from Thursday, October 3 to Sunday, October 6. Secretary Sobolewski, who grew up in the area, is ensuring we have a great mix of activities and places to tour and dine.

The time to sign up for bowling leagues is also fast approaching. The fall season generally fills up quickly, so please watch for the announcement from Gordy.

The Activities Committee is working hard on events for the fall and winter. If you wish to help, please contact them. I also suggest that you consider joining one of the many committees. It’s your club, and the more you are involved, the more you will get out of it.

Finally, a big thank you to our Membership Director, Alexa, and the Membership Committee for their work in welcoming back returning members and bringing in new ones. It really speaks to the continuous upgrading of the facility, the amenities, and the committees' hard work and ideas.

Regards,

Notes from the Manager

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” One of my favorite quotes, and how true it is. For those who don’t know, this quote is from the film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The main character, Ferris, was summing up the events of the movie, but this quote is so relevant in life. Today, I was thinking about it because I feel like summer is flying by! We have had such a great season of fun and excitement here at the Club.

I look back at the Docktail parties, the formation of the weekly Cornhole League, the giant 4th of July celebration, and so many other activities. We appreciate your participation in these events and have enjoyed seeing the huge attendance numbers. The good news is that we are only ramping up!

Everything peaks in the third week of August when we host our annual Fleet Review. The week will feature a Margaritaville theme, beginning with the ever-popular Family Fun Night on Thursday, August 15. This is the night where the kids get to play all kinds of games on the East Lawn for tickets that can help them win prizes. I looked at the prize pool and can tell you it is better than ever, so make sure to bring the kids for a chance to win! That same night, you can head out to the Marine Activity Center and watch the Annual Fleet Review Regatta, a point-to-point regatta featuring all types of sailing vessels. The next day (Friday) is where the adults (kids at heart) get to party on the docks and compete for bragging rights (and their name on the Fleet Review Trophy) for a year. The various group docks will have unique themes relating to Margaritaville and will decorate their boats and dock areas.

Not a boater? No worries! You can assist a boater friend or join in on the fun at the Marine Activity Center, where the social members will be decorating per the theme as well. The social members won the trophy two years ago and want to get it back this year, so they have enlisted the leadership of Gloria Hinz and Robin Stevenson as the chairpersons! Make plans to join them.

On Saturday, August 17, the Club will host the traditional Fleet Review, where all vessels in the Harbor are invited to parade out on the lake and be “reviewed” by the three Commodores stationed at the Marine Activity Center Balcony. Each vessel that passes will receive a cannon salute. Saturday evening is the Fleet Review Dinner, featuring live entertainment and an amazing menu. Commodore Dillon will announce the winners of the individual boat decorating (best decorated powerboat and best decorated sailboat) as well as the trophy for best-decorated group dock.

Sunday, August 18, the festivities wrap up with Worship on the Water on the East Lawn as well as a Bloody Mary and Mimosa Bar at the Gazebo Deck, complete with ALL the fixings! We hope you will plan to spend the entire week at the Club and enjoy this wonderful tradition.

Thank you again for all your support! See you at the Club.

A Member to Remember

HOWARD E. COFFIN

Howard Coffin built his first automobile while studying mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan. He used the steam-powered vehicle to deliver mail in Ann Arbor. Following his graduation in 1902, he entered the automotive world as the chief experimental engineer at Oldsmobile.

In 1906, he became a co-founder of the Hudson Motor Car Company, serving as vice president and chief engineer, and designing many of their early models. Coffin's innovative designs and engineering prowess helped establish Hudson as a major player in the automotive industry. Under his leadership, Hudson introduced several pioneering features, contributing significantly to the advancement of automobile technology.

In 1926, he joined the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, where he enjoyed sailing his 124-ft motor yacht, Zapala, with family and friends. Perhaps as a respite from the Michigan winters, Coffin began investing in land along the Atlantic coastline of Georgia. He built an estate on Sapelo Island, where he hosted notable guests such as Charles Lindbergh and Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover. On nearby Sea Island, he built a luxury hotel, which today is the centerpiece of the exclusive resort community known as The Cloisters.

Coffin's ventures extended beyond engineering and hospitality. His passion for innovation and excellence left a legacy in both the automotive and leisure industries. He was known for his vision and dedication, which continue to inspire future generations.

Culinary Excellence

Raw vs. Cooked

Many people believe that raw foods are better for you than cooked foods. Raw vegetables, for instance, are full of the nutrients you need in their natural state. The flavor of raw foods is pure and unaltered. In contrast, cooked foods can be seasoned and have different textures due to the cooking process. This applies to a wide range of foods we eat.

Consider the difference between raw fish in sushi and cooked fish in a dish. Oysters also offer various textures and flavors when raw or cooked. Raw foods often provide distinct flavor profiles and textures that are perfect on their own. However, the flavors developed through seasoning and cooking, such as a slow-cooked brisket, can be rich and complex.

Fish exemplifies the versatility of raw and cooked preparations. Tuna, for instance, can be enjoyed raw with minimal additions. When seared, the Maillard reaction creates a noticeable difference in flavor and texture between the raw and cooked portions. Ceviche, which "cooks" fish with acid, introduces a different texture and flavor. Prolonged exposure to the acidic marinade continues to change the texture, often mistaken for raw preparation but is actually cooked.

Cooking tuna fully in oil results in a flaky texture, perfect for dishes like a Niçoise salad. The spectrum of textures from raw to fully cooked tuna demonstrates the various shades of an ingredient that can enhance different dishes. Understanding these changes can improve your cooking by allowing you to build diverse textures for your guests.

Eggs are another great example of how different preparations create various textures and flavors. A raw egg yolk emulsifies into beef tartare or Caesar dressing. Egg whites with sugar can make meringue. A runny egg on a burger adds richness, while a hard-boiled egg is versatile in dishes like egg salad or Maurice dressing.

So, is raw better? The answer depends on personal preference. By exploring the different textures and flavors created through various cooking methods, we can plan better dishes that engage our guests and create wonderful memories.

Ceviche

Serves 6

Ingredients:

• 1 lb yellowfin tuna

• ½ small red onion, finely diced

• 1 garlic clove, minced

• 1 blistered jalapeno, finely diced

• 1 tablespoon capers, drained and rinsed

• 1 avocado, finely diced

• ½ cup fresh lime juice

• ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil

• ¼ cup chopped cilantro

• Salt and pepper to taste

Method:

1. Chop the tuna into small, bite-sized cubes and place them in a bowl.

2. In a separate bowl, mix together all the other ingredients.

3. Combine the tuna with the mixture.

4. Serve chilled with chips or lettuce.

Debunking Common Fitness Myths:

Separating Fact from Fiction in the Age of Social Media

Fitness is a realm where myths and misconceptions abound, often leading to confusion and frustration for those striving to achieve their health goals. The rise of social media has exacerbated this issue, with countless self-proclaimed fitness gurus and influencers dispensing advice that is not always grounded in science. It's crucial to discern fact from fiction and rely on credible sources for fitness guidance. Here are some of the most common fitness myths and the facts that debunk them.

Myth 1:

More Sweat Means a Better Workout

Fact: Sweating is simply your body’s mechanism for cooling itself down and does not necessarily indicate the intensity or effectiveness of a workout. Various factors such as genetics, the environment, and individual fitness levels affect how much you sweat. Instead of gauging workout effectiveness by sweat, focus on metrics like heart rate, endurance, strength improvements, and overall fitness progress.

Myth 2:

No Pain, No Gain

Fact: This adage can lead to harmful practices. While it's normal to experience some muscle soreness after a workout, pain is a signal that something might be wrong. Persistent or sharp pain can indicate injury or overtraining. It’s important to listen to your body and differentiate between the discomfort of pushing your limits and the pain signaling a potential problem.

Myth

3: Cardio Is the Only Way to Lose Weight

Fact: Cardio can help burn calories and improve cardiovascular health, but it is not the only method for weight loss. Strength training is equally important because it helps build muscle mass, which in turn increases your resting metabolic rate. A balanced fitness routine that includes both cardio and strength training, along with a healthy diet, is most effective for weight loss and overall health.

Myth 4: You Can Target Fat Loss in Specific Areas

Fact: Spot reduction, the idea that you can lose fat in specific areas by exercising those parts, is a myth. Fat loss occurs systemically, meaning you lose fat across your entire body. While targeted exercises can strengthen and tone specific muscles, they won’t specifically burn fat in those areas. A comprehensive approach that includes a balanced diet and full-body workouts is necessary for effective fat loss.

Myth

5: Lifting Weights Will Make You Bulky

Fact: This myth, often perpetuated among women, suggests that lifting weights leads to a bulky physique. Building significant muscle mass requires specific training, diet, and often a genetic predisposition. For most people, strength training leads to a lean, toned appearance and provides numerous health benefits, such as increased metabolism, improved bone density, and enhanced overall strength.

The Influence of Social Media

The rise of social media has given a platform to countless self-proclaimed fitness experts. While some influencers offer valuable advice, many lack proper qualifications and promote pseudo-science. These individuals often share workout routines and fitness tips that are not based on scientific evidence, potentially leading followers astray and causing harm. It’s essential to scrutinize the credentials of fitness influencers and seek advice from certified trainers, physical therapists, and other qualified professionals.

Navigating the world of fitness can be challenging, especially with the plethora of myths and misinformation prevalent on social media. By understanding the facts and debunking common myths, you can make informed decisions about your health and fitness journey. Always rely on credible sources and remember that a balanced approach, including a variety of exercises, proper rest, and listening to your body, is key to long-term success and well-being.

Looking Aft

“HIGH DINING” ON THE GPYC ROOF

On the cover of the book celebrating the 100-year anniversary of our Club is a 1928 rendering of the proposed Clubhouse. Generally unnoticed is a feature that did not survive the cut when expenses had to be trimmed to fit the budget. A close look at the rooftop shows a line of pink stripes appearing to be some kind of awning. Welcome to rooftop dining.

The proposal was to offer members a summer dining experience with a spectacular view. The 48 ft. x 95 ft. space was to be canopied for members’ comfort—hence the pink stripes. With no plans for kitchen or bar facilities and only dumbwaiters to provide food and drinks, this was clearly not high-end dining but merely proposed as a very casual gathering place for members to enjoy the summer weather and lake views. One could argue it is rather like our Gazebo Bar today, with perhaps a slightly less spectacular view but a much more comfortable experience.

Of course, this space required an elevator, and when said elevator was removed from the plans due to cost overruns, rooftop dining came down to earth—which, in retrospect, was probably a good thing.
