As we motor into December and close out another year at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, I’ve been thinking about how much the Club means to all of us. It’s been a fun, full, and busy year around the Club — on the water, in the dining room, on the grounds — and I want to thank everyone who played a part in making it so enjoyable.

I especially want to thank outgoing Commodore Bob and Mary Weiland. Bob put in an incredible amount of time and heart this past year, and Mary was right there supporting him through it all. They’ve both given so much to GPYC. Bob, I’m hoping you saved a couple of those perfect-weather days for us next season!

All members are warmly invited to this special event in the Grand Ballroom at 6:00 p.m. The evening will include a complimentary dinner, drinks by subscription, and a presentation you won’t want to miss. It will be an inspiring moment as we look ahead to the next century of excellence at GPYC.

In addition, the past six months have seen a meteoric rise in participation in our à la carte dining venues, underscoring our renewed dedication to being the premier dining destination in the area. To Your Health
By Peter Wendzinski
Staying Fit During the Holiday Season
Staying fit during the holiday season can be challenging, especially with an abundance of festive foods, rich beverages, and packed schedules. The first step is simply acknowledging that it is normal to indulge at times. Rather than attempting to avoid every treat that appears, aim for balance and moderation so you can enjoy seasonal favorites without overindulging.
Incorporating physical activity into your day does not need to be complicated. Taking brisk walks after meals, stretching periodically, or adding short sets of squats or lunges throughout the day can help you stay active even during the busiest moments. Activities like cooking, decorating, or spending time with energetic children can also provide surprisingly effective movement.
If you prefer a more structured workout, our Fitness Center offers ample time to exercise before or after holiday events. Whether you enjoy an early morning session to start your day or an evening workout to unwind, the facility is available to support your routine throughout the season.
Reducing holiday alcohol consumption can also contribute significantly to maintaining your health. Consider alternating alcoholic drinks with water, choosing lighter beverage options, using smaller glasses, or simply sipping more slowly. Volunteering to be the designated driver provides a practical and socially responsible way to limit drinking while still participating in celebrations.
Making mindful food choices can further support your wellness goals. Filling your plate with vegetables and lean proteins before sampling richer dishes can help maintain balance. Additionally, focusing on a single, satisfying plate rather than continual snacking can prevent accidental overeating. Holiday stress often contributes to unhealthy habits, so setting aside a few moments for deep breathing, a brief walk, or quiet reflection can make a meaningful difference. Managing stress effectively not only supports your mental well-being but also helps maintain healthier choices.
Finally, finding opportunities to stay active with family or friends can make fitness more enjoyable. Whether it is a winter walk to view holiday lights, a group stretching session, or a lighthearted dance break to festive music, shared activities can keep everyone moving.
In the end, the goal is not perfection but balance. With intentional choices, regular movement, and the convenience of our Fitness Center open from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily, you can maintain your health while fully enjoying the holiday season.

“KIRCO MANIX proved throughout the process to be a trusted and reliable partner. Even in the face of numerous challenges, including the pandemic and supply chain disruptions, we are able today to celebrate the journey and proudly open our building with excitement and positivity.” - Greg Brabec, director of Government Affairs and Special Projects for WACKER
By Gordy Woods
The first half of the season is coming to an end, and our scores are soaring. We are thrilled to celebrate our second 800 series of the month — impressively achieved by the same bowler, Charles Molnar. Charles rolled games of 269 – 246 – 288, earning an outstanding 803 series.
The GPYC bowling team also traveled to the Detroit Athletic Club for our annual GPYC vs. DAC Ladies Interclub. The GPYC ladies held a slim 17-pin lead going into the final game and ultimately fell short by just 25 pins — a competitive finish to an exciting match. Leading the team were Mary Weiland and Dianna Smith, posting a handicap score of 651. Becky Gaedke and Mary Weiland also delivered an impressive 1242 doubles score.
Looking ahead, our next interclub event will take place on Saturday, January 10, as we face the Country Club of Detroit in a dual Ladies and Men’s Interclub. We hope to see strong support and spirited competition.
We will offer open bowling during the holidays, December 26 and 27, from 12:00 to 9:00 p.m.
And don’t forget New Year’s Eve Open Bowling, with two shifts available: 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. and 7:30 - 10:00 p.m.

Savoring the Season: December
at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club
As December unfolds, our dining room at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club transforms into a festive haven, filled with the sounds of laughter, the clinking of glasses, and the delightful aromas of memorable dishes. Each meal becomes a celebration of the season, a time to enjoy the fruits of our labor and the company of friends and family.
At the yacht club, we believe that food is more than just sustenance; it’s an experience that brings us closer together. As we embrace the warmth of December, we invite our members to gather around the table, share their favorite dishes, and create lasting memories that will carry us through the colder months ahead.
Family traditions are the heart of our cooking philosophy. Many of our members generously share their cherished family recipes, which we often incorporate into our specials. This practice not only honors their heritage but also creates a sense of belonging and community within our club. The stories behind these recipes echo through generations, weaving a rich tapestry of memories that have become the backbone of our gatherings.
Christmas time at the yacht club is about more than just the meal; it’s about the entire experience. We encourage families to gather around the table, sharing stories and laughter while savoring the delicious dishes we’ve prepared. The ambiance of the club, with its stunning views of the lake and cozy decor, adds to the warmth and joy of the season. Picture families sitting by the roaring fire in the main ballroom, surrounded by beautifully decorated trees that reflect the spirit of togetherness.
During this magical time, we embrace the rich flavors and festive ingredients that define Christmas. From tart cranberries to sweet chestnuts, our menu celebrates the season’s bounty. Each dish tells a story and evokes the joy of the holidays.
One of Chef Jeff’s signature creations is his exquisite Beef Wellington. This dish, a true testament to culinary skill, features tender beef wrapped in layers of savory mushroom duxelles and flaky pastry. The warmth and elegance of this
dish inspire culinary treasures that we love to share with our membership during the holiday season.
Additionally, our menu includes a variety of roasted meats, from succulent lamb to flavorful prime rib, each dish prepared with care, ensuring a memorable dining experience. We also feature an array of baked treats, gingerbread cookies, fruitcakes, and seasonal pastries— that bring a touch of sweetness to our celebrations.
As the year ends, we also embrace the spirit of giving. The yacht club often hosts charitable events where members can contribute to local causes, ensuring that the joy of the season extends beyond our walls. It’s a wonderful way to foster community and share the blessings we’ve received throughout the year.
As we savor the delights of December, we look forward to welcoming the New Year with renewed hope and excitement. Each gathering at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club is a reminder of the joy that comes from sharing meals, stories, and traditions.
So, let’s raise a glass to the warmth of the season, the love of family, and the friendships that enrich our lives. Here’s to creating more cherished memories that will carry us through the winter and beyond!
1. Sear the Beef - Season the tenderloin with salt and pepper.
Heat olive oil in a cast-iron pan over high heat and sear on all sides until deeply browned, about 2 minutes per side. Remove and brush with Dijon mustard. Let cool completely.
2. Make the Mushroom Duxelles - Melt butter in the same pan.
Add mushrooms, shallots, garlic, and thyme. Cook until all moisture has evaporated and the mixture is thick and paste-like (10–12 minutes). Season lightly. Cool fully.
3. Wrap the Beef - Lay plastic wrap on the counter. Arrange prosciutto slices in a slightly overlapping layer.
Spread the duxelles evenly over the prosciutto. Place the tenderloin on top and roll tightly into a log.
Chill 20 minutes to firm.
4. Add the Puff Pastry - Roll out the puff pastry into a rectangle. Place the beef log in the center and wrap tightly, sealing the edges. Brush with egg wash and chill 20 minutes.
5. Bake - Preheat oven to 400°F.
Brush Wellington again with egg wash. Score the top lightly for decoration if desired. Bake 35–40 minutes, or until an internal temperature of 125°F (medium-rare). Rest 10 minutes before slicing.
6. Make the Red Wine Shallot Jus - Melt butter in a small saucepan. Add shallots and cook until soft. Pour in wine and reduce by half. Add beef stock and thyme. Simmer until slightly thickened and glossy. Season to taste.
Slice into thick rounds and spoon warm shallot jus over the top. Pairs beautifully with roasted root vegetables, duchess potatoes, or a winter greens salad.

We are also pleased to welcome Taffany Van Roseen as our newest Director. Additionally, Commodore Brian Fish was elected as the Preservation Fund Trustee, continuing his service and stewardship of the Club’s long-term vision.
