WEDDINGS at THE WAR MEMORIAL

Welcome to The Moorings Completed in 1910 by celebrated New York architect, Charles A. Platt, for Russell A. Alger Jr., “The Moorings” — named by the Alger family for its commanding position on Lake St. Clair — was immediately hailed as an architectural masterpiece. The sweeping Italian Renaissance villa was among the first Grosse Pointe estates designed for year-round living, its timeless elegance as captivating today as the day it was built. After Russell's passing in January 1930, the home found a second calling, welcoming the community as a branch of the Detroit Institute of Arts from 1936 to 1948. In 1949, Marion Alger deeded the property to The Grosse Pointe War Memorial Association — a gift of place, and of purpose — dedicating it forever to the service and enrichment of the community it has always called home.
