CHARLES & TED Friends,
We hope you have been enjoying this glorious Michigan fall and are looking forward to plans for the upcoming holidays with friends and family. Here at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, we are eagerly anticipating the special moments that December brings and are excited to spend time at home with our loved ones. We have been busy preparing for a new year of classes and activities and are happy to share them with you in this magazine. Our diverse assortment of offerings is sure to pique your interest, whether you want to get in shape for the new year, take a Farm to Fork cooking class, or explore art or dance. Be sure to check out this season’s Arts at the Alger, on pg. 16, for our outstanding line-up of performing artists and This Americana, on pg. 8, for three fascinating, relevant programs on issues facing our community. New this year is a special overseas travel opportunity for youth ages12-18 at the internationally renowned Leysin American School, pg. 9. Also new are engaging classes in art and design, wellness, and our fabulous day trips and extended travel. We also hope you take a moment to read about some of the exciting things that have been happening here in the past few months. Our Arts at the Alger and This Americana series continue with great success, as we bring premier performing artists and Metro Detroit leaders to the Grosse Pointe community. WMTV, our local access cable channel, broadcasts unique programming of special interest to our viewing area. And we hope you enjoy the photos from our frighteningly fun Halloween Jeantini. (See the back cover for details about our upcoming next Jeantini! You won’t want to miss it!) As we get ready for the often hectic season ahead, we’d like to send you and yours heartfelt good wishes for a wonderful holiday and the chance to slow down and enjoy good times with family and friends.

ALL NITE PARTY The Grosse Pointe War Memorial is excited to once again host the All Night Party for the Grosse Pointe South High School seniors from the Class of 2016. The event takes place following graduation on Thursday, June 16, and every room in the War Memorial is filled with fun activities and games for the new graduates. We are thrilled to be a part of this wonderful tradition, put on by the Mothers’ Club of Grosse Pointe South. Contact the Mothers’ Club for more information.
STRATEGIC PLANNING The GPWM has recently embarked on a long-range planning process, PLAN 2025, funded in part by the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan. Our goal is to become a unique, dynamic and forward-thinking hub for southeast Michigan while continuing to serve this very special community. Honoring veterans will continue to be an important part of our work. We want to improve the caliber of artistic programming and build the breadth and depth of classroom offerings and we also want to be known for our premier hospitality space. Referring back to these three lines of service, we believe that these will continue to be our hubs for many decades and that each one feeds back in to the central goal that the GPWM exists to “make life better.” The question is: how to achieve excellence in all these areas over the next 5-7 years? Our planning process will lay the groundwork for these goals and allow us to build an institution that will grow, thrive and serve for decades to come. Cover image by Inner Circle Photography
PARADE COMPANY VIP PANCAKE BREAKFAST The Parade Company held its annual VIP pancake breakfast at its studios in Detroit on Nov. 6. Parade sponsors along with business and community leaders were in attendance, including War Memorial President and CEO Charles Burke.

THIS AMERICANA RECAP
This past fall, we launched a new program titled This Americana, a series of talks on the history, culture and ideas that shape us as residents of this great nation. Community members came out to hear lectures on topics as diverse as regional trends and local successes, clean waterways and our environment, and even a behind-the-scenes look at life in the White House. Below are images from two of these events. See pg.8 for upcoming talks.
Making a Pointe, Oct. 6, featured prominent leaders from the community in a TED Talk-like presentation on the challenges, successes and innovations found in our evolving community. Participants included Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, Belle Isle Conservancy President Michele Hodges, Jefferson East Executive Director Josh Elling.
Our Environment, Our Waterways, Oct. 27, explored the issue of clean water and a safe environment in southeast Michigan in collaboration with WDET-FM. Scientists, environment advocates and local teachers and students gave presentations.
HALLOWEEN JEANTINI It’s scary how much fun we had at our Halloween Jeantini, Oct. 29.
You won’t want to miss our next Jeantini on February 18. See our back cover for more information. Photos by Inner Circle Photographay

We air pre-produced content that has been given to us by our community colleagues including the Detroit Economic Club and Wayne State University. And we broadcast partner-produced shows of local interest, like the “Ask the Experts” presentations put on and filmed by the Family Center of Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods. We broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on Comcast Channel 5 and 915, AT&T Uverse Channel 99 and Wow Channel 18. Our programming changes every Monday, so check the Grosse Pointe News or the GP War Memorial website or facebook page to see the current week’s schedule.

DEVELOPMENT 2015 Annual Fund Campaign
E pluribus unum--from many, one--is not only the motto of the United States, but a philosophy we at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial hold dear. Many different programs, a wide array of events and a wonderful range of experiences all come together to create one magnificent center for the community. As we launch our 2015 Annual Fund Campaign, we ask you to be the one - - the one who creates many memories, commemorates many heroes, and shapes many futures. This summer, the War Memorial hosted our first SummerFest, attracting more than 2,000 people and, for the first time, all the events were free. The laughter of children was heard from the art studio to the GPWM Theater as local kids learned and played in Campville USA. Our commitment to honoring military heroes was reflected in our annual Memorial Week programming, which included Our Community Salutes and the heartfelt Memorial Day Service. We are fortunate to have many friends whose contributions result in one community-wide gesture of support. Please consider making a gift to the War Memorial this year. With your generosity, we can work together to strengthen our community one program, one person, one memory at a time. Thank you for all that you do to make our community a vibrant place to live and work! Because of you… • 10 times a year, 450 middle-school students enjoyed our War Memorial Dances • More than 100 non-profit groups hosted meetings and events at the War Memorial • More than 200 children attended Campville USA, our new series of summer fun • Over 250 veterans enjoyed our Veterans Day breakfast • 332 people travelled with the War Memorial, with trips as close as Midtown Detroit and as far away as Milan, Italy • 472 people enjoyed our inaugural season of Arts at the Alger • 500 honored our nation’s veterans at our traditional Memorial Day Service • 1,110 people attended two sold-out events – Brunch With Santa and Mother’s Day Brunch

VETERANS DAY BREAKFAST AND US NAVAL ACADEMY WOMEN’S GLEE CLUB CONCERT The Grosse Pointe War Memorial once again had the honor to pay tribute to those who have served in the Armed Forces with a special Veterans Day breakfast. Richard S. Miller, Brigadier General (RET), was the guest speaker. Miller served in the U. S. Army and then in the National Guard for 30 years, ultimately becoming the Deputy Commanding General of the 39th Infantry Division, Indiana National Guard. He also served in Kandahar, Afghanistan from 2004-2005. Miller is now the President at Ares Consulting LLC, a Veteran owned business in Saline, Michigan. The breakfast was sold out with more than 200 veterans, family members and community leaders in attendance.
Following the breakfast, the vets, their families and members of the community were treated to a free concert in the theater by the US Naval Academy Women’s Glee Club. As ambassadors for the Naval Academy, this amazing group of singers performs for a wide variety of audiences. Attendees annually include the President of the United States, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Secretary of the Navy, the Chief of Naval Operations, the Commandant of the Marine Corps, members of Congress, world leaders, and the public-at-large. CHESS – THE MUSICAL
STEEL MAGNOLIAS
HELLO DOLLY!
Set during the Cold War, the U.S.-Soviet rivalry plays out through an international chess championship. The brash American grandmaster arrives with his Hungarian-American female chess second, who falls in lovewith the intense Russian champion.
Finding both humor and depth in whatever life delivers, a group of southern women meet every challenge with dignity, honesty, wit and big hairdos. A smart and fast-paced comedy-drama, Steel Magnolias follows the lives of these women and the bonding at their common beauty shop.
Dolly Gallagher Levi, a New York-based matchmaker at the turn of the century, has a new client, Horace Vandergelder, a “half-a-millionaire” Yonkers merchant. But Dolly, a widow, thinks he is overlooking the perfect match – Dolly herself! Dolly proceeds to weave a web of romantic complications involving Horace, his two clerks and a pretty milliner and her assistant.
