To strengthen regional workforce readiness and respond to industry demand with modern, purpose-built skilled trades facilities designed for hands-on learning, innovation, and future-focused training.
Building for Trades NWP’s new Skilled Trades Training Centre will expand career pathways through an immersive, hands-on environment grounded in real-world training.
Modern Shops Future-Ready Skills Optimal Positioning Northwestern Polytechnic anchors Alberta’s northern resource corridor as its largest post-secondary institution, situated in a region that plays a critical role in driving the province’s economy. This globally recognized area contributes a significant share of Alberta’s GDP through agriculture, forestry, manufacturing, construction, and energy.
Supported by strong geographic advantages and sustained economic growth, northern communities continue to attract investment from both domestic and international industries. Grande Prairie is projected to be one of Alberta’s fastest-growing cities, with surrounding communities expanding in step with it. Northwestern Polytechnic is central to this momentum, providing a consistent pipeline of skilled, job-ready graduates who strengthen industry capacity and support long-term regional growth.
NWP continues to invest in skilled trades training across campus, with top-of-the-line equipment in new and recently upgraded facilities built within the past two years. These modern environments are designed to align with current industry standards and expectations. On the main campus, there will be TWO NEW LABS constructed. A new 2,300 sq ft carpentry skills lab and 9,200 sq ft welding lab expansion will provide hands-on learning learning opportunities where students can build proficiency using current equipment and techniques. From foundational training to advanced skill development, these spaces emphasize safety, precision, and practical experience.
This NEW TRADES CENTRE will be purpose-built to support Heavy Equipment Technician, Plumbing, Automotive Service Technician, Gasfitter, and Steamfitter– Pipefitter apprenticeships, the Centre will equip students with practical, industry-aligned skills using modern tools, technology, and shop spaces that reflect today’s workplaces. The 40,000 sq. ft. facility will feature specialized instructional shops that deepen technical expertise and strengthen core competencies across multiple trades. Dedicated classroom, labs, and collaboration areas further enhance learning, positioning the Centre to elevate skilled trades education and develop the next generation of highly trained professionals and problem solvers.
The North is rich with potential, driven by growth, industry, and opportunity. Realizing that potential means investing in people and the skills needed to sustain it. As we develop the Skilled Trades Training Centre and other flagship training labs, we are exploring legacy opportunities to help create purpose-built environments for hands-on learning, innovation, and workforce development.
