WELCOME TO GPLT Community theatre can do a lot to lead members of the community to common ground. As we laugh together, puzzle together, and dream together, we can celebrate diversities and discover commonalities that we share with our neighbours. As Albertans, we have recently been asked to do some real thinking about sovereignty vs. belonging. Here on our modest stage, we can explore together what belonging feels like. I am simply thrilled that the director to shepherd us into this feeling of belonging is Nathaniel Leigh - someone who I have personally had the privilege of working with a few times before. Not only is Nathaniel a talented director, but also a versatile performer, and an eager roll-up-our-sleeves and pitch-in-where-needed kind of team member that balances the serious with the silly in a way that makes everyone on his team feel excited to be a part of it. The Mystery of Irma Vep - A Penny Dreadful is as entertaining to an audience as it is a challenge to its cast. To pull it off, The Mystery of Irma Vep - A Penny Dreadful has employed the efforts of a wonderful backstage crew, whose dedication has made the magic possible. One of the qualities I cherish the most about theatre is that there is a place for everyone. From the actors front and centre, to the designers, backstage crew, production team, and stage manager. Every member of aaaaaa the production team gets their name in the program and gratitude from the rest of their team. One of my favourite parts of any show though is at the end. When the actors take the stage to take their bows, they will often gesture to the booth and backstage to show their appreciation to the crew. And then they stretch their arms out towards the audience, nod, smile, and applaud. Because theatre artists know deeply the integral role the audience plays. That sense of belonging that makes all of the hours of preparation and dedication worthwhile cannot happen without the gasps of surprise, the chortles, the cringing, or the applause. None of us can do it without you. So thank you, dear audience, for playing your part. I hope you’ll keep coming, because you belong. Alyssa Hudson President Elect, Board of Directors

MEET THE DIRECTOR I first discovered The Mystery of Irma Vep - A Penny Dreadful in University and immediately loved its ambition: two actors, playing 4 characters each, with over 30 costume changes?!? I’d never heard of something like that before. It’s the kind of show that only works AS a play. You can have the same actor play multiple characters in a movie or tv show no problem, but to do it LIVE, that takes timing, effort and a dedicated team. Stephonya and Daniella have been the most gracious and understanding actors I have worked with, which makes their performances even more impressive. Being able to learn all those lines and knowing you never really get any time off the stage? Truly remarkable. But the other half of the performance is our amazing backstage team. A combination of theatre veterans and first timers, they are all working just off stage to make this show as magical as it can be through lights, sound, and of course the costume changes. In particular I want to thank Becca and Yax. Yax was there from the very beginning and in addition to doing the lights and sound, volunteered to be one of our dressers. And Becca is this show’s rock. Putting together the crew, helping us find so many of our props and costume pieces and helping anyone they see struggling. My deepest affection to both of you. All that said, it’s time to get the show on the road! The doors are closing… the lights are diming… and there’s NO ESCAPE... until intermission. Please enjoy the Mystery of Irma Vep - A Penny Dreadful. Nathaniel Leigh Director

MEET THE PLAYWRIGHT Charles Ludlam (1943-1987) grew up in Queens, New York, just a few subway stops from Greenwich Village, and the heart of Gay America. At 24, he founded the Ridiculous Theatrical Company, where he wrote, directed and performed in almost every production for the next two decades, often with Everett Quinton, his life partner and muse, by his side. Renowned for drag, high comedy, melodrama, satire, precise literary references, gender politics, sexual frolic and a multitude of acting styles, the Ridiculous Theater guaranteed a kind of biting humor that could both sting and tickle. His many plays included Turds in Hell,Der Ring Gott Farblonjet, a riff on Wagner's Ring Cycle, Bluebeard, and The Mystery of Irma Vep, his most popular play, and a performer's tour-de-force. Ludlam continued working until almost the day he died of PCP pneumonia, just three months after his AIDS diagnosis. He was 44.

CAST BIOS DANIELLA CERON | Nicodemus Underwood / Lady Endi Hillcrest / Alcazar / Pev Amri Daniella, better known in the theatre community as Miss C, is a teacher and mom to an almost-two-year old named Jack. This is her first time performing in any theatrical production as she usually sits in the director's chair. Daniella works as a high school teacher at Charles Spencer where she directs the band, choir, and musical theatre production. Her most recent shows were Matilda and Mean Girls: High School Version. This year Charles Spencer will be putting on Hadestown: Teen Edition at the KMSC Law Performing Arts Theatre from May 13-15. In her spare time Daniella likes to work out, spend time with her family, read, craft, and do hot yoga. She loves emo music and hates all things AI. She hopes you enjoy this nonsensical and outrageous performance.

STEPHONYA TURCHYN | Jane Twisden / Lord Edgar Hillcrest / An Intruder / Irma Vep Stephonya is a longtime actor finding her love for all things theatre at the age of 7. Since finding that spark, she has been involved in various one acts, musicals, plays, & improv performances. This is her fourth production at GPLT previously being seen on stage in Much Ado About Nothing, & Looking Glass Land. But was also on the costume team for Pride & Prejudice. The Mystery of Irma Vep - A Penny Dreadful poses quite a few unique challenges to this seasoned actor including a diverse script, & the ever-dreaded pants. As this actor was last seen wearing pants in August… of 2015. As she faces her fashion fears on stage; be prepared to face, possibly many of your own with a side of laughter. Thank you for choosing The Mystery of Irma Vep - A Penny Dreadful, to fill your evening.

CREW BIOS BECCA YURKOSKI | Stage Manager Becca has been a part of theatre for approximately 24 years, filling several roles both onstage and off. Over time and much dabbling they have found their favourite place to be is in the shadows making backstage magic happen. This is their fourth production with GPLT: twice as backstage manager, and now twice as stage manager. Despite all they have been involved in they have found The Mystery of Irma Vep - A Penny Dreadful to be a unique experience. With only two actors and nearly 50 costume changes the production process has been a wild, though wonderful, ride. They hope you enjoy the play as much as they’ve enjoyed being stage manager for it.

MIA WOODS | Backstage Manager The Mystery of Irma Vep - A Penny Dreadful is Mia’s 10th show at GPLT and 13th all together. She’s been working behind the scenes for three years, only coming out to act in the Rising Stars summer camps. Mia loves the organized chaos of what's happening behind the curtain, along with meeting all the new extraordinary people that she gets to see more of every show. Stage managing and being a stagehand are her two favorite roles to play in the theatre. The Mystery of Irma Vep - A Penny Dreadful may very well be one of her favorite shows she’s done acting as backstage manager.

MAIA ENYEDY | Leftstage Manager Maia is very excited to be on the team for The Mystery Of Irma Vep - A Penny Dreadful this season! She’s been doing live theatre for about 7 years but this is her first serious time working behind the scenes. Her favorite thing about the play was getting to meet everyone that made it possible in the first place. Maia hopes everyone will enjoy what her and the whole crew have put together for the show.

YAX POSAS | Lighting and Sound Design / Dresser Yax has been part of the theatre community in Grande Prairie for over 10 years with different roles on and off stage, and is now learning more about the technical part of light and sound design. Though it has not been easy, they appreciate all the support provided through this journey! Now, get ready to embark on this adventure filled with suspense, fast costume changes and some laughter, with our two amazing actors as they tell you the story of The Mystery of Irma Vep - A Penny Dreadful!
