It is worth mentioning that the National Safety Council (NSC) is a non-profit, nongovernmental public service organisation dedicated to protecting life and promoting health in the United States. Located in Itasca, Illinois, the NSC is a membership organisation, founded in 1913 and given a congressional charter in 1953. Members include more than 51,000 businesses, labour

organisations, schools, public agencies, private groups and individuals. NSC’s mission is to “educate and influence people to prevent accidental injury and death,” and its vision is “making our world safer.” Since taking over the management of Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company in January 2005, Mr. Jawahery has focused on quality and professionalism in all areas of the business including: health, safety, care for the environment, operations, production, corporate social responsibilities and export. He has worked to modernise the company’s management systems, production, maintenance, training and safety, which has enhanced the competitiveness of the company and its ability to compete on the global level. He has also focused on the human element and given it his utmost attention. Remaining close to the employees, Mr. Jawahery has continuously supported the company’s Labour Union to enable it to carry out its assigned role in a professional manner. Mr. Jawahery’s leadership approach is to encourage and empower young Bahrainis to bear

At the regional level, Mr. Jawahery is a Board Member of the Gulf Petrochemical and Chemical Association (GPCA), Board Member of Arab Fertilizer Association (AFA), and Chairman of the Responsible Care Committee of GPCA. In recognition of his contribution in the areas of health, safety and the environment, Mr. Jawahery was selected as a Middle East Ambassador for the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety & Health (NEBOSH) – UK and Lead Ambassador of the Robert W Campbell Award Programme, for the National Safety Council – USA. GPIC has an excellent international reputation in the petrochemical sector and has received many awards and tributes locally and globally, including the Robert W Campbell Award from the United States National Safety Council in 2008, as well as the Sir George Earle Trophy from RoSPA (UK) in 2005, making the company the only organisation worldwide to have achieved this recognition. In addition it has won the RoSPA Chemical Sector Award nine times in the past ten years.

Petrochemical Industries Company has achieved a new record in the production of Methanol. The company has safely produced 10 million metric tons of quality Methanol, the largest amount since the start of production in 1985. A ceremony was held by the company on this occasion which was attended by GPIC Managing Director, H.E. Mr. Anwar Saeed bin Salaman, GPIC General Manager Mr. Abdulrahman Jawahery and members of the executive management. In a statement Mr. Abdulrahman Jawahery thanked the shareholders, Chairman and Board members for their continued support to the company throughout its 30 year journey. Mr. Jawahery noted that the company firmly believes that its success is closely tied to the quality of the workforce. He went on to say that training and

development of Bahraini employees remains a top priority of the executive management team. “Staff members are the company’s real wealth and they are our partners in this remarkable achievement”, he added. Commending the positive role played by the company’s management in this regard, Mr. Jawahery aﬃrmed that they were always keen to develop the national workforce and provide them with opportunities to gain experience and knowledge. This will in turn boost the industry, which is considered to be a reliable contributor to the economic prosperity of the kingdom. He went on to say that the company regular receives invitations to train personnel from other international companies. Mr. Jawahery also highlighted the prudent maintenance policy adopted by the company,

especially the periodic maintenance, which has ensured continued stability and made this production record possible. Speaking on production and export operations, Mr. Jawahery revealed that the company has proudly become a symbol of clean industry as a result of its environment-friendly plants and operations; adding that currently the production level is at 400,000 metric tons per year. With the continuation of development and modernisation, the company was recently able to enhance the productive capacity of the Methanol plant up to 1,220 metric tons per day, following the inauguration of the Carbon Dioxide Recovery Unit, which was successfully commissioned in order to reduce the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions from the Methanol plant and productively utilise

the CO2 to increase Urea and Methanol production. Commenting on the effect of the global financial meltdown on export operations, Mr. Jawahery said “Following a period of economic boom, the global financial bubble has now burst and GPIC is not insulated from such an international situation. Yet we have worked hard to adopt standard measures of performance to help tackle financial instability, without compromising safety or security.” He added that the company has been able to fulfill all its Methanol export plans in coordination with its partners in Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC). He went on to say that since inception of the company in 1985, GPIC

has exported all of its 10 million metric tons of Methanol to various global markets without any diﬃculties or delay. The company’s first shipment of Methanol was 15,333 metric tons exported on August 15, 1985. The USA receives 35% of GPIC’s total exports while the Far East including China, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand receives 43% of the company’s total exports. Europe receives 19% while the United Arab Emirates, India and other countries receive 19%. All products were exported by sea on board 1,073 tankers, loaded from shared docks at Sitra Port. GPIC General Manager said that customers today are more aware and influential, adding

that environmental care has become an influencing factor in their purchasing decisions. He noted in this regard GPIC’s keenness to protect the environment by launching a number of environmental projects inside its industrial complex. He further said that the company will continue to train young leaders who will make the best use of the opportunity offered to them and contribute substantially to the success of the company and fully justify the confidence placed in them by the management. Concluding, Mr. Jawahery thanked H.E. the Oil and Gas Affairs Minister and NOGA chairman, Dr Abdulhussain Mirza, who has been the catalyst behind the company’s remarkable achievements.

CPISP In Cooperation with GPIC CPISP Focuses on Community Service

In an effort to focus on com-

munity service, the Crown Prince’s International Scholarship Program (CPISP) Deputy Director, H.E. Shaikha Marwa bint Rashid Al Khalifa, said that the scholarship program is planning to initiate a project in which the candidates will be engaged in voluntary work and community service, by giving them the chance to work with local charities and establishments. The program is launched in cooperation with the Gulf Petrochemical Industries Co. which will sponsor the project and provide financial rewards for the participating charities and establishments. The project entails students

working in groups with selected charities and helping them to find solutions for their daily challenges, which will both assist the charities and enrich the students’ experience. During a visit to GPIC, Shaika Marwa thanked the company for their support, which will ensure the continued success of the CPISP Program. She added that GPIC’s involvement with the Program and the students, and the sponsorship of projects such as this, give talented young Bahrainis the opportunity to find out about the success factors that lie behind doing community service. GPIC General Manager Mr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said that it was a great honour for

GPIC to sponsor such projects. “Our support reflects the private sector’s commitment to developing Bahrain’s talented youth” he added, wishing all participants a successful experience. CPISP GPIC hosts CPISP Students Jawahery praises the distinguished Program

Following their voluntary work with charities, the Second Grade Secondary students made three presentations during the meeting, highlighting their experience in this regard. Working with Al-Noor Charity, the first group was able in just two weeks to rebuild a home of one large poor family with a very low budget. The second group students explained their experience with the Friendship Association of the Blind. According to the presentation, not only did they manage to train a number of blind people on

using computers through Braille, but the students were also able to train volunteers to continue this noble work. The third group restored a kitchen for foreign workers making it useful, safe and ready to use. Following the presentations attended by the company’s engineers and oﬃcials, Mr. Jawahery thanked H.R.H. the Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa for initiating this international scholarship program, which has completed 10 successful years. Mr. Jawahery stated that the vision of His Royal Highness is to develop young Bahrainis from all walks of life so that they can achieve their dreams and aspirations, and attain key positions that will contribute to Bahrain’s development.

He thanked the program officials for selecting GPIC to be the only official sponsor for the program, saying that this was a great honour for the company. He stressed that enriching the learning process with social work experience will create leaders who are ready to serve their country. He affirmed that community service guides students to build their skills and develop the positive character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Although the company is achieving excellent corporate operating performance, General Manager said the GPIC values community service as much as it value productivity. “We have always been active in the social sphere, striving to give back to society” he elaborated. CPISP Crown Prince’s International Scholarship Program Summer Action Learning Initiative The Crown Prince’s Interna-

tional Scholarship Program (CPISP) held its annual Summer Action Learning Program for its students and participating companies, who this year included CPISP Platinum Sponsor Kuwait Finance House, National Oil and Gas Authority represented by Bapco and GPIC, who were both Gold Sponsors of the Program, and the Economic Development Board. The summer learning initiative is organised by the CPISP in cooperation with international development consultants Rob Rorich & Associates and Aligned Leadership, and teams up CPISP students with delegates from major companies in Bahrain to work on a real business challenge. The program is based on the concept of action learning, which is an educational process where participants study their own actions and experiences to improve performance. The 8-week program starts with a one week intensive

workshop for both students and company delegates aimed at developing leadership, team working, planning, and problem solving skills. Each team will then spend the rest of the summer working on their challenges, after which they will give a final presentation offering proposed solutions to their respective challenges, and share their experiences of personal growth via this project. nounced that Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company underwent an extensive third party assessment by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) from 20 to 21 June 2010 as part of the Responsible Care audit requirement and the company’s management system was found to be in compliance. Accordingly, DNV have awarded GPIC the accreditation of RC 14001:2008. On this occasion the company held a ceremony which was attended by H.E. Mr. Anwar Saeed bin Salaman, Managing Director together with Mr. Abdulrahman Jawahery, General Manager, GPIC management team and senior oﬃcials. Mr. Jawahery explained that the accreditation of GPIC’s management system to RC14001:2008 is a testimony of the robustness and integrity of the company’s management system in ensuring that its operations and activities are in line with the most stringent health, safety, security and environmental requirements and that the company also is very innovative in the field of environmental projects, which exceed legislative requirements and embrace global biodiversity initiatives.

GPIC is delighted to be amongst the very few companies in the region to be accredited with the RC 14001:2008 certification and thus leading the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) member companies in the implementation of the Responsible Care program. Mr. Jawahery explained that in December 2009, GPCA had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the American Chemistry Council (ACC) to establish a Responsible Care program for the region’s petrochemical and chemical industry. He added that the MoU marks a major step forward in implementing GPCA’s ambitious

plans to ensure that the regional industry adopts uniform worldclass Environment, Health, Safety and Security (EHSS) practices. GPCA’s chairman and Sabic’s vice chairman and CEO H.E. Mr. Mohamed H. Al-Mady, GPCA’s Secretary General Dr. Abdulwahab Al-Sadoun, ACC director and Exxon Mobil Chemical Company president Stephen D. Pryor and ACC president and CEO Cal Dooley signed the agreement on the concluding day of the Fourth Annual GPCA Forum in Dubai. RC Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) recognition. He also added that GPIC was selected by GPCA to take the leadership role in this endeavour and appointed him as the Chairman of GPCA’s Responsible Care Committee. GPCA’s members, many of whom have already adopted the global industry’s best practices, are fully supportive of Responsible Care. The Association now has a dedicated Responsible Care Committee that will help implement the MoU and work closely with ACC and GPCA member companies. Mr. Jawahery highlighted that on 19 January 2010 GPIC signed the declaration of support for the Responsible Care Program set by GPCA and with this GPIC’s journey to implement the Responsible Care Management System at its facilities started. GPIC, over the past three decades has adopted the global chemical industries best practices and has ensured accountability and continual improvement in all areas of its business through implementation and certification of Management Systems. The pre–assessment for Responsible Care was carried out by auditors from DNV in May 2010 and the final assessment took place on 20-21 June 2010 when GPIC was audited by DNV and successfully certified for RC14001:2008. Mr. Jawahery confirmed that the latest initiative of Responsible Care program is a clear testimony of GPIC’s continued focus on sustainability and in particular, care for the environment. The Responsible Care ethic is the petrochemical and chemical industry’s foundation for a sustainable future. Launched in Canada more than 20 years ago,

it covers all aspects of chemical industry activity: process safety, pollution prevention, distribution, safety, product stewardship, security, community awareness and emergency response. It is the global chemical industry’s signature initiative to enhance EHSS performance within chemical facilities and along their supply chains. For more than 20 years, ACC members and Responsible Care partners have implemented the program in their organisations. Responsible Care has resulted in improved performance, safer handling of products in the supply chain and recognition of the industry’s efforts by governments, NGOs and the public. Participating national or regional industrial associations agree to conform to the Responsible Care Global Charter and the Responsible Care Fundamental Features instituted by the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA). GPIC, now a certified RC14001 petrochemical industry will be playing a pivotal and leadership role under the umbrella of GPCA to help other regional industries and member companies of GPCA in implementing the ethics of Responsible Care Management Systems.

IFA IFA appoints a Middle East representative as Vice President for the First Time GPIC General Manager Mr.

Abdulrahman Jawahery was announced Vice President of the International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA).

The announcement came at the IFA Annual Conference held in Paris, France during the period from 31May-2June2010. Mr. Jawahery, who chaired the IFA Technical Committee, was elected unanimously by the Associationâ€™s members. Such honour came due to the good reputation enjoyed by the Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company on both regional and international levels. The company has won numerous awards due to its significant performance in the petrochemical sector. GPIC has recently hosted IFA Global Safety Summit which attracted leading international companies from all over the world with a wide experience in the manufacture of fertilizers and their byproducts. The event had immense significance owing to the contribution of this vital sector in providing the world with fertilizers used in

the production of agricultural crops. The International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA) is a not-for-profit trade association representing the global fertilizer industry. IFA member companies represent all activities related to the production, trade, transport and distribution of every type of fertilizer, their raw materials and intermediates. It is worth mentioning that Mr. Jawahery is a Chartered Chemical Engineer who obtained his BSc and MSc degrees in Chemical Engineering from the UK; he is also a Chartered Scientist

and Chartered Environmentalist. He began his career at the Research Centre of British Petroleum (BP) for a period of two years before moving to the GPIC, Bahrain, in 1983. Before being appointed as the companyâ€™s General Manager, Mr. Jawahery held several positions at GPIC including Urea Plant Superintendent and Plant Operations Manager. Mr. Jawahery was the chairman of the IFA Technical Committee for four years up to 2010 and a board member of the Arab Fertilizer Association.

Visits German Parliamentary Delegation Visits GPIC and Praises Development of Bahraini Industries

On Tuesday

1st June 2010 a high-level delegation from the Economic Affairs Committee of the German Parliament visited GPIC Complex to become acquainted with the standards achieved by the petrochemical industry in the Kingdom of Bahrain. During the visit the German delegation was accompanied by H.E. Mr. Isa Abulfateh, MP and member of the Economic and Financial Affairs Committee at the Council of Representatives and head of the mission of honour. H.E. Dr. Hubert Lang, German Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain also

attended the visit. Upon the delegationâ€™s arrival at the Complex, they were welcomed by Mr. Yusuf Abdulla, Deputy General Manager and members of the executive management team. Mr. Yusuf Abdulla welcomed the visiting German guests and conveyed to them the best wishes of Mr. Abdulrahman Jawahery, General Manager who was out of the country. The two sides reviewed means of further enhancing bilateral co-operation between Bahrain and Germany, especially in the petrochemical industry,

and the possibility of exchange of expertise between German petrochemical companies and GPIC. This would contribute to the further development of the petrochemical industry in this vital region of the world. CDR GPIC participates in the reduction of Carbon Dioxide emissions

Since

its establishment, GPIC has taken upon itself the preservation of the environment by adopting a series of individual environmental projects at the company’s complex, reflecting the efforts being made in this regard. As a part of its success on this issue, the company has achieved many environmental awards, in addition to its adoption of the ‘Responsible Care’ initiative which concentrates basically on taking care of the environment and limiting any negative effects.

One of GPIC’s leading efforts in this field is reducing the emissions of harmful gases by using advanced methods and utilising the latest in petrochemical technology. GPIC started its production in 1985, with a capacity of 1000 metric tons per day producing both Ammonia and Methanol. The total emission of Carbon Dioxide at its facilities was 1.46 metric tons for each metric ton produced until the year 1989. When the company increased production for these two chemicals to reach 1200 metric tons for each,

the total emission of Carbon Dioxide was 1.48 metric ton for each metric ton produced. GPIC continues to develop its production levels steadily and gradually, with total commitment to reducing harmful emissions and gases that cause glasshouse effects, especially Carbon Dioxide which results from the burning of natural gas. With a production capacity of 1700 metric tons per day, the company opened the Urea production facility in 1998, which depended khaleejieh for petrochemicals Issue 73 / October 2010

CDR on Carbon Dioxide as a raw material. This reduced the emissions to 0.73 metric tons per metric ton of Ammonia and Methanol and Urea, as shown in the graph. It is also worth mentioning that in 2003, the company participated in an international benchmarking study along with more than 60 Ammonia factories from around the world, 40% of which were European. According to the study, GPICâ€™s plant came as the second best plant. Recently, the company inaugurated the Carbon Dioxide Recovery

Conferences Major GPIC Paper Presented at Latin American Health, Safety & Environment Conference

The event was held in the Argentinean city of Salta during the period from 23 to 27 August 2010 in the presence of 300 leading government and oil company figures from the South American countries, in

addition to a number of engineers working in this industry. GPIC nominated Mr. Fadhel Mallalah Al Ansari, Technical Services Manager to deliver the key-note speech at the opening session. The speech shed light on the basic principles of sustainable development, namely community service, protection of the environment and profitability. These are the same three principles adopted by GPIC for management of its operations which have enabled the company to gain a prestigious reputation and to win many regional

and international awards from leading firms and organisations in Europe and the USA. The Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Association seized the presence of GPIC in Argentina to hold a special seminar on this occasion at the Association’s headquarters in the capital Buenos Aires attended by the Association’s members. GPIC’s representative spoke during the seminar about sustainable development and environmental protection. He reviewed the company’s experience in this field.

GPIC has adopted a key management philosophy focused on care for the environment, community and profitability, in addition to compliance with environmental standards. The company has taken a number of environmental initiatives including practical projects within the complex, environmental projects linked to community service, such as environmental lectures given to primary and intermediate school students who have enjoyed the benefits of this scheme over the last 10 years. GPIC awards are given to secondary school students as part of a 6-year project that has attracted annually an average of 8 research papers and projects from secondary schools. Corporate responsibility is very much in evidence through the launch of awareness programmes and care for various community groups. GPIC is also a major contributor to the Bahrain economy by pumping some $2.5 billion into the economy since its launch for the benefit of local trade and economic sectors.

of Dr. Ghazi Al- Gosaibi following a life full of giving and accomplishments.

Remembering the man invokes his most distinguished achievements, including the early development of the industrial sector. Dr. Al-Gosaibi participated in laying the foundation stone of our company as a practical and not a theoretical act in the development work. Dr. Al-Gosaibi managed to unite aspiration with reality, laying down new bases for development, management and strategic planning by considering human beings as the real asset that deserves continuous investment. He always believed that the industrial production operations must be to the advantage of the individual and must provide a social stability. With that in mind, industry must also take into consideration the natural resources available and adopt policies to replace the consumption mentalities with environmental conservation ones.

In Memory of Abdul Baki Alnoori GPIC

remembers with great appreciation the late professor and distinguished educator, Mr. Abdul Baki Alnoori, former Board Chairman of the Petrochemical Industries Company (PIC) in Kuwait and one of the founders of GPIC. Mr. Alnoori aged 81 died after a long career in education, industry, national and union action. The oil and gas sectors in the Arabian Gulf have lost one of its pioneering figures in the petrochemical industry; the late Mr. Alnoori was a symbol of sincerity and dedication.

He was a leading personality owing to his background as an educator, a politician and an industrialist, factors that made him a distinguished leader who taught us the art of management and industrial profession, as well as ways of dealing with superiors and employees. He participated and worked in joint ventures in many Arabian and international companies, including the Kingdom of Bahrain, Tunisia, Turkey and China. Mr. Abdul Baki Alnoori enjoyed an illustrious personality and great foresight regarding the role of industry by laying the foundation for industrial and economic development. It is also worth mentioning that he was one of the pioneers in the petrochemical industry who worked hard to establish the foundation of this industry since the seventies. Mr. Alnoori was born in Kuwait in 1929; in 1955 he obtained a diploma in mechanical engineering from the UK and started his educational career as a teacher in the Industrial College, In 1962 he became the first Kuwaiti headmaster of the college. He held many positions including the Board Chairman and Managing Director for PIC. During that period he participated in establishing GPIC in Bahrain.

Memorial In memory of Dr. Max Appl

Dr. Max Appl, former Director of the Ammonia Department of BASF died on 6 May 2010 at the age of 81.

BASF of Germany is the world’s leading chemical company with approximately 105,000 employees and 385 production sites around the world. Dr. Max Appl was a legacy in the chemical and petrochemical field and especially in the Ammonia industry since 1966. He spent his entire working career at BASF starting in the organic synthesis processes and oxo synthesis. During his working life and after retirement he wrote numerous important papers, articles and books on Ammonia and synthesis gas technology. After his retirement he also continued to attend various conferences such as the Ammonia Safety Symposia, having been a member of the AIChE’s Ammonia Safety Committee from 1981 to 1993. In 2002 Dr. Appl was awarded the Ammonia Safety Committee’s Lifetime Achievement Award being only the third person to have received this accolade. He was also a frequent visitor to British Sulphur’s Nitrogen & Syngas conferences where he regularly chaired a session. GPIC had the honour and pleasure of having Dr. Max Appl attend some of GPIC’s past celebrations and milestone achievements over the years.

Appreciation GPIC Honours the First CDR Operating Staﬀ

During the ceremony H.E. Mr. ben Salamah praised the unique team spirit and professionalism of the project operators, which has paved the way for significant achievements affecting the company’s productivity and good reputation. Mr. Jawahery aﬃrmed GPIC’s

keenness to develop the national workforce and provide them with the opportunity to gain experience and knowledge needed to boost the petrochemical industry. He said that Bahraini workers were always capable of being creative and making positive contributions, if they are looked after and given the necessary training and development they require. The 450 MT/day Carbon Dioxide Recovery (CDR) Unit has cut Green House Gas (GHG) emissions and improved overall eﬃciency of resources. The captured Carbon Dioxide is used as feedstock for Urea and

Methanol synthesis processes. The technology, which was installed by the Japanese Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Corporation can recover approximately 90% of the Carbon Dioxide in flue gas. CDR Unit is aligned with Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, and comes in accordance with the country’s effort to combat climate change. GPIC shines at the Gulf Toastmasters Clubs Competition Gulf

Petrochemical Industries Company won valuable awards at its first participation of the Annual Gulf Toastmasters Clubs Competition. Winning the “Effective Communication” award came following the graduation of members qualified by the international Toastmasters organisation in record time. Club member Jassim Mohammed won second place in the Arabic evaluation competition, while Ali Alrayes won the third place in the Arabic language. Mr. Jawahery ended his speech by inviting all the Bahraini youth to join the Toastmasters programme to achieve their aspirations.

He added that the company is not only supporting its own Toastmasters Club, but also the different annual Toastmasters conferences held in the kingdom during the last two years.

It is worth mentioning that the Annual Conference of Toastmasters Clubs, Section 79 which includes Toastmasters clubs of the Arabian Gulf countries and Jordon, was held at the Gulf University for Science and Technology in Kuwait from the 20th to the 22nd May and was attended by more than a thousand participants from all over the Arabian Gulf countries and Jordon.

The GPIC Toastmasters programme has become an integral part of the development and qualification of its engineers and supervisors. In addition, the club trained two groups of the employees’ children during the last summer vacation within the ‘Young Leaders’ programme.

The GPIC Toastmasters Club is the only club in the Kingdom of Bahrain to hold its meetings in both Arabic and English.

Among them was Mr. Khalid Alghoud, Deputy Governor for Educational and Training Affairs of Sector 79, which includes all Toastmasters Clubs in the Arabian Gulf and Jordon. During the meeting a number of speeches was evaluated and the winners were awarded.

Mr. Alghoud praised the meeting and thanked GPIC for its continued support to the Toastmasters. Representatives of the Saudi Toastmasters Clubs, Mr. Abdul Razak Alturki, Deputy Governor for Educational and Training and Mr.

Abdul Aziz Aldulaijan expressed their delight at participating in the meeting, praising the well organised event. GPIC General Manager, Mr. Abdulrahman Jawahery welcomed the honourable Saudi guests and expressed his thanks to all those who attended the meeting. It is worth mentioning that GPIC Toastmasters Club won three valuable awards at the District Toastmasters Annual Convention which was held in Kuwait in May 2010.

The meeting which was held in both Arabic and English languages reflects the GPIC’s role in serving the civil society institutions and the Bahraini youth development and encouragement to obtain positive abilities and skills. The meeting had the highest attendance record since the inception of the GPIC’s Toastmasters club; it was the highest in the Kingdom. The meeting included three valuable speeches for girls ages 13-15, speeches that were admired by the audience. Five more speeches were giv-

en by Mohammed Almaskati (best speaker), Ali Alraees, Omar Karashi, Joshua Mathew and Miss Fatima Fakhro from Bapco. The delegates expressed their appreciation to the GPIC’s management and members of the company’s Speech Club for their efforts in organizing such event and providing all the possible facilities. Sports GPIC organizes a Table Tennis Tournament

GPIC Ladies 3 Month Health, Fitness and Nutrition Programme

35 ladies from Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) participate in the ‘GPIC Ladies 3 Month, Health, Fitness and Nutrition Programme’, which commenced on 2 June to 25 August 2010 inclusive. The programme was aimed at promoting and encouraging health, nutrition and fitness awareness for ladies within GPIC, which can then in turn be introduced within their family environment to bring further awareness within the Kingdom of Bahrain. This is the first of its kind for GPIC, however the company plans to continuously promote this area by hosting such awareness campaigns for its employees on a regular basis. The programme focused on introducing and encouraging a healthier lifestyle for all GPIC ladies and covered many areas; from what they eat and the nutritional value gained from healthier foods, along with an achievable fitness routine for today’s modern and working woman. Prior to the commencement of the programme; GPIC’s Medical Centre met with each participating lady personally to conduct a routine health check and to discuss what they hope to achieve from the programme, as well as highlighting the attainable goals that each lady should set for themselves. The programme commenced with all of the ladies being weighed, measured and an individual fitness file created to suit each of the ladies’ specific needs. The GPIC Nutritionist devised an attainable healthy eating plan for each lady and also provided relevant nutritional information and presentations throughout the course of the programme. Each lady was also presented with an informative ‘Welcome Pack’. At the end of his visit, Mr. Jawahery expressed his appreciation to the head and members of the Social Activities Committee adding that he was pleased to see such well-organised programmes. The summer programme started on the first of July and lasted until the tenth of August. It included training and teaching

classes covering ages ranging from kindergarten to 14 years old, supervised by specialists and qualified teachers. A total 320 children have participated in this year’s activities, which also included visits to different historical and archeological sites in Bahrain. The visits were aimed at educating the children of their country’s heritage in a joyful way. A visit to the ‘Lost Paradise’, the unique water park, was also included in the programme in addition to a visit paid by a team from the Directorate of Traﬃc who explained to the children some of the traﬃc rules and instructions in a very simplified and attractive way.
