On Thursday 5th March, 2009, Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company was honoured by the visit of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabika bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty the King, for the opening of the “Aromatic Plant Garden”. This garden has around 45 species of aromatic plants, beautiful blooming flowers and surrounded by trees. The sound of the water ripples is playing beautiful musical tunes with the birds singing everywhere. This garden is characterized by its unique beauty, attractive arrangement and magnificent landscaping.

Commemorating this occasion, the Company has published this booklet that contains in its pages a brief summary about the plants in this garden with photographs of the plants in the garden and brief information about GPIC’s environmental achievements.

‫وتخليدا لهذه المناسبة الغالية أصدرت الشركة هذا الكتيب حامال بين صفحاته وصفا مقتضبا‬ .‫وصورا للنباتات التي تحويها الحديقة ولمحة معبرة عن إنجازات الشركة البيئية‬

GPIC’s concern with the environment stems from its firm belief in the preservation of the environment and its development, which are an integral part of its corporate social responsibility. The Company has translated this concern by showing its full commitment by exerting continuous efforts to introduce non-conventional approaches for the enhancement and protection of the environment for more than 25 years.

This Company is characterized by its pioneering environmental projects, which have become role models to be followed by others worldwide. This is proved by the merit certificates and international awards that the Company has won in the areas of occupational safety, health and environment. Such achievements are considered as a great honour for the Bahrain industry in general and oil and gas sector in particular.

The “Princess Sabika Aromatic Garden” is considered as a culmination of our environmental projects and another step on the road to sustainable development.

I am confident that this garden will cast its charm on the Kingdom’s skyline and will be an everlasting memory in the march of this established Company. Our thanks and gratitude should go to HRH wife of His Majesty the King for sponsoring this pioneering environmental project.

PRESIDENT MESSAGE Since its establishment in 1979, GPIC has taken upon itself the responsibility of protecting and developing the environment out of its belief in its corporate social responsibility and conviction in the need to give a positive picture of the role that can be played by industry in protecting the environment and community service.

The Company has activated such firm principle through continuous investment in equipment and systems, which are consistent with the environment while ensuring safe and continuous operation. However, this basic level was not what the Company was looking forward to; hence several unique environmental projects were launched.

In 1992, GPIC launched the "Charity Garden", which produced more than 16 tons of vegetables and dates that were distributed to the needy families. In 1996, the Company set up the "Fish Farm" to add to the Bahrain fish stocks more than 330,000 fishes, mostly of the sea-bream variety.

Due to the different species and large numbers of local and migrating birds, the Company set up in 2002 the "Bird Sanctuary", which was made up of two man-made islands to provide food for more than 75 species of birds. The sanctuary has around 2,000 mangrove shrubs to protect them from extinction. In order to preserve our local folk heritage, HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa had opened in May 2005 the "Medical Herbs Garden" to form with the "Green Oasis" a beautiful tapestry of palm trees, fruit trees and flowers to bring the number of cultivated trees to 4,700 trees.

The Company’s efforts did not stop at this point to protect the environment within its complex but went beyond that to the Bahraini community and the world at large.

On the local level, the Company gives material and moral support to the concerned government and private organizations and agencies by ensuring the advancement of the community and its protection. The Company’s environmental message has culminated in the "Environmental Lectures", delivered annually by the Company’s employees to school students, and its sponsorship of the "Education and GPIC Environmental Research Programme". On the international level, GPIC has launched the "International Dilmun Environmental Award" in collaboration with the Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

The "Princess Sabika Aromatic Plants Garden" Project, depicted in brief by this booklet, is a culmination of the Company’s environmental projects and provides a strong motive to continue its environmental march.

introduction Aromatic and Wild Plants at Gulf Petrochemical Industries Co. About 63 aromatic and wild plants are grown in Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC), which the Company is keen on keeping and preserving in one location.

They are grown in the “Princess Sabika Aromatic Garden” to become a vital reference for researchers and persons interested in farming and horticulture. There is no doubt that they will be available as a source of agriculture awareness for children, students and citizens of our beloved Kingdom of Bahrain.

Common Name: Sea Purslane Family: Aizoaceae Scientific Name: Sesuvium verrucosum Raf.

Perennial herb, prostrate, branched from its base; leaves fleshy, spathulate (spoonshaped), glabrous (without hair); flowers single, pink-mauve in color.

Uses: Used externally in traditional medicine for ear problems. It can be used as green cover.

Common Name: Dill Family: Apiaceae Scientific Name: Anethum graveolens L.

Fast growing annual herb with erect thin stems and aromatic foliage; leaves are long and slender (thread-like), with sharp pointed tips; flowers are grouped in terminal umbel (tent-like) inflorescence.

Uses: It is used in spices for its aromatic smell, and as appetizer; for the treatment of stomachache and constipation, and to help women who have given birth to breastfeed their babies. It is also used to cure cough and flu cases.

Perennial branching shrub, stems are ascending and leafless; flowers are aromatic, yellow-green, clustered in short axillary inflorescence; fruits are in the form of long, thick, flat pods containing seeds covered with silky hair.

Uses: The flowers and seeds are used to treat cough and cold. Stems are used to treat urine-retention and to help remove kidney or bladder stones. It is a range plant.

Uses: It is used to treat stomach-ulcer, chest diseases and reduces the high temperature. The flower powder is used to treat dermatitis and ulcers.

It is delicious when added to tea.

They are used as wind repellent, useful for removing stones, laxative, diuretic, in the treatment of splenectasis, rheumatism, antidotes; chewing the leaves is used for the treatment of gingivitis; the plant is used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals such as antibiotics.

Uses: It is used as a diuretic, in the treatment of diarrhea, toothache, regulating the menstrual period and as a tonic.

Common Name: Indian ginseng, winter cherry Family: Solanaceae Scientific Name: Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal Perennial shrub, erect, branched; stems cylindrical covered with thick whitish wooly hair; leaves opposed above, petiolate, margin smooth, pointed tip; flowers yellowish-green in axillary clusters.

Uses: The roots are used as a tonic, aphrodisiac, and diuretic; leaves are used as a vermifugal, to reduce fever, for bowel pain, gonorrhea; the fruits are used for the treatment of heart and liver diseases, diarrhea, as tranquilizer and analgesic; plant extract has antimicrobial activity.

Caution: Poisonous plant.
