Hear from Josh Cleary, Executive Assistant to the CEO at Runway East, on his top local picks and how he spends an average day at The Hickman.

10 THE HICKMAN
"THE ELIZABETH LINE HAS MADE IT SO EASY TO GET ACROSS LONDON FAST."

My day at The Hickman always starts with a short walk from Aldgate East station, often with a quick stop-off at Exmouth Coffee Company for an almond croissant and a hot chocolate. The morning will usually be a mixture of getting on with my own tasks, internal meetings and zoom calls. We've got a great suite of meeting rooms and phone booths, perfect for getting a bit more privacy and not disturbing the rest of the office. For lunch, I'll usually pop across the road and get something simple, unless we've got a team lunch or I'm hanging out with a friend, in which case I'll go to Emilia's for pasta or stroll along Brick Lane. Later in the week after work, I might go to a nearby pub to hang out with my colleagues, or if I'm seeing friends in the West End I'll walk to Whitechapel station - the Elizabeth Line has made it so easy to get across London fast, and I don't need to worry about leaving early to meet them on time.

Emilia’s Pasta is only a few minutes’ walk around the corner from The Hickman, the pasta is all made onsite that morning, and the sauces are flavoured to perfection. We always have time for a main and a dessert when popping out for our lunch hour as it’s so close.

Exmouth Coffee Company is my go-to when I need something a bit sweet to get me through the morning. The pastries are enormous, and as a non-coffee drinker, having a high-quality hot chocolate is essential for me! They also do some great lunch options, either to eat in or to go - the lasagne is particularly impressive. The fact that it's en route between the tube and The Hickman is fantastic and makes it easy to indulge.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF FOUR COMMUNICATIONS

Meet Ashley Legg, Office Services Manager at Four Communications, who tells us all about what it's like to work in The Hickman and favourite Whitechapel highlights.

I love coming into the office and The Hickman building because every day is different. My role involves a lot of interaction with the building and working with the building's management team to ensure everything runs smoothly. Working at The Hickman is very different in comparison to most offices in London as the building functions can be controlled using sesame, The Hickman’s smart workplace app. sesame allows us to move around The Hickman seamlessly and offers a variety of features and benefits for everyone in the building.

14 THE HICKMAN

I start my day in the office with a short walk from Fenchurch Street station and take a trip to the Makers Café for my morning coffee. Then I venture down there at lunch time for something tasty and warm, so I don't need to step out of the office! After work I tend to walk over to Leman Street Tavern or the Running Horse for a drink and a catch up with some of my colleagues.

WHITECHAPEL 15
"I TEND TO WALK OVER TO LEMAN STREET TAVERN OR THE RUNNING HORSE FOR A DRINK AND A CATCH UP."
16 THE HICKMAN
"I'LL WALK ACROSS THE ROAD TO THE WHITECHAPEL GALLERY AS THEY HAVE A DELICIOUS CAFÉ AND RESTAURANT."

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF FOUR COMMUNICATIONS

We spoke to Aimée Rathle, Digital Performance Executive at Four Communications, who shares her typical day in the office and Whitechapel favourites.

My day in the office starts with a short commute on the Elizabeth Line into Whitechapel station, and after hopping off the train, as if it was muscle memory, I head straight to the Maker’s Café at the bottom of The Hickman to order my morning flat white (and fight the urge to buy one of their pastries). For lunch, I pre-order my salad at The Salad Project in Spitalfields so that I have an excuse to pop into Uniqlo on my way there. I love to people watch, so eating lunch in Spitalfields is a dream. Other times I'll walk across the road to the Whitechapel Gallery as they have a delicious café and restaurant Townsend, or Tayyabs which is a great BYOB Punjabi restaurant near Whitechapel station and Grounded Coffee right across the road from The Hickman for coffee, pastries and sandwiches. After work, I’ll either meet up with friends who also work in the area at one of the many local pubs, The Castle is our usual go-to. If I’m feeling ambitious, I’ll do a workout class around the corner at Kore Gallery or MoreYoga.

The Hickman benefits from being centrally located to all of the very best restaurants, bars and pubs Whitechapel has to offer, and also with the convenience of the Makers Café downstairs, it all makes coming into the office much more enjoyable!

THE NEW PLACE TO WORK

Whitechapel is a furnace for creativity and culture. Here you’ll find start-ups with fresh ideas and big businesses. The Hickman is perfectly placed to connect businesses with local communities and support local growth.

Local businesses like Goji Investments, Maersk, Four Communications and BT have all relocated their offices to Whitechapel in order to get more out of their workspaces and adapt to the flexible working culture to support their businesses expanding and growing teams. In 2021, BT relocated their office space from St Paul's to Whitechapel which is testament to the appeal of the area to both start-ups and large corporates alike.

From sustainability to innovation, these businesses are relocating to the area for a more adaptable workspace that’s beneficial for their workforce and to support their growing businesses. We see more businesses that are on the lookout for smarter, high-tech and sustainable workspace facilities which are now a central part of everyday working life with hybrid working the new norm. Flexible workspaces are now a priority for big businesses and start-ups to provide open spaces and on-site amenities allowing teams to connect, develop and collaborate.

"WE WERE HEADQUARTERED IN BT CENTRE FOR NEARLY 35 YEARS AND WE WERE LOOKING FOR A BUILDING IN CENTRAL LONDON THAT WOULD BE THE HOME OF BT FOR THE NEXT 35 OR MORE. THE 18 FLOORS OF OUR NEW HEADQUARTERS (1 BRAHAM ST, WHITECHAPEL) WILL DO JUST THAT."
