Request Moves Forward

The Trenton City Council will meet in regular session at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 9 at city hall. The meeting agenda was not available for publication as of press time.The agenda will be published on the Republican-Times website, www.republican-times.com, as soon as it becomes available.

Plans to rezone property in west Trenton for a new Dollar General building received lots of discussion during a public hearing held on Monday night by the Trenton Planning and Zoning Commission. The commission heard a request from Warren (Scott) and Carolyn Forman on behalf of Overland Group LLC to rezone property at 132 W. Fourth St. from R-3, one- and two-family dwelling lower density, to B-2, community business. According to Assistant City Clerk Tracy Maberry, the Overland Group plans to construct a building at the site that would house Dollar General. Eight current and/or former property owners attended the meeting to voice their opposition to the request, citing concerns of having a business located in an area zoned for residential use. The Grundy County Commission will meet in regular session on Tuesday, July 10 at the courthouse. Items on the announced agenda include a 10 a.m. meeting with Ambulance Director Steve Tracy, followed by the ribbon cutting at Nestle at 11 a.m. The commission also plans to meet with Meredith Berry of the University of Missouri Extension during the day. At the July 3 meeting, the commission tabled the closing of NE Talc Lane until more information can be gathered concerning how a bridge on that road is to be handled in regard to Community Development Block Grant funds. The closing had been requested by Preston Jawahir, who had presented a petition to the commission in April. By statute, the commission could not consider the request until the first meeting of the next quarter.

Fireworks lit up the skies on Tuesday night as Trenton held its community fireworks display. The show lasted just over 30 minutes and drew much praise from those who viewed the event, which was organized by a local committee and financed through donations from community businesses, organizations and individuals.

The Trenton Family Aquatic Center will be holding twohour swim nights on Fridays during the month of July. The pool will be open from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on July 6, 13, 20 and 27. Persons who have a season pass will be able to swim at no cost along with children ages 0 to 23 months. The cost for those age two to 54 years is $2 while persons 55 and over will be charged $1. Regular swimming hours at the aquatic center are 1 to 6 p.m.

Summer Reading Program

“Best in Two Days,” a local musical group comprised of four Trenton residents, will perform on Friday, July 13 as part of the Grundy County-Jewett Norris Library summer reading program. The performance is at 10:30 a.m. in the Hoover Theater, located on the third floor of the library, and is open to the public. Lunch will be served after the concert. Band members include Trent Crawford, Jacob Davis, Emma Gilham and Ellis Gilham. Another Trenton resident, Claire Utley, will be a guest performer during the concert.

The Trenton High School FCCLA Life Event Planning STAR Events Team received a gold rating at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference held on June 28-July 2 in Atlanta, GA. The team represented Missouri in the competition, which included over 4,500 members from across the U.S. taking part in 30 STAR Events. MID-AMERICA MUSIC FESTIVAL

The Tri-County R-7 Board of Education took care of several financial items during a special meeting on Friday, June 29. According to information provided by Superintendent David Probasco, the board approved the 2018-19 school budget, which shows a projected surplus for the year. Expenditures were listed at $2,736,781.20 while revenues were estimated at $2,782,999.61. The board closed out the 2017-18 school year by approving budget amendments to show actual revenues and expenditures. A change order to expand the concrete area for the bus barn was also approved. The next board meeting will be on Wednesday, July 11.

Uncle Kracker, Black Stone Cherry Headline Event Rock, blues, country and bluegrass music will make their way to Trenton later this month as the second annual Mid-America Music Festival takes place at the Black Silo Winery. Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28 are the dates for the event, which features 15 bands, food trucks, vendors, wine tasting, a beer garden, hot air ballon rides and an incredible fireworks show. In addition, persons wanting to spend the weekend will be afforded an opportunity to camp on-site in an area just east of the winery. Gates open on both days at noon. Friday is devoted to rock and blues, with seven bands scheduled to perform. The featured performer for the evening is Black Stone Cherry, scheduled to perform at around 9:45 p.m. For 17 years, Black Stone Cherry has put forth “a new vicious breed of Southern Rock, injecting youthful vitality and a myriad of fresh new influences into the beloved American rock tradition.” The band has released five critically acclaimed albums as well as one blues EP while

sharing the stage with such groups as Def Leppard, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, Motorhead and ZZ Top. Hired Gun, a classic rock and blues band, gets the day rolling at 2:15 p.m., followed by local cover band Centerline at 3:30 p.m. The rest of the line-up for the day includes Members Only, an 80’s tribute band, at 4:45 p.m.; Them Dirty Roses, a southern rock band, at 6 p.m.; Bishop Gunn, a blend of rock and roll/soul and blues, at 7:15 p.m. and Shaman’s Harvest at 8:30 p.m. It will be country and bluegrass day on Saturday, with Uncle Kracker as the featured artist. He is set to perform around 9:45 p.m. Uncle Kracker is best known for his debut major label single “Follow Me,” which hit #1 in 2000 and continues to be a favorite. The album featuring that song, “Double Wide,” went double-platinum and set the tone for a career that has included the release of hits “Drift Away” and “Smile.” His duet with Kenny Chesney on “When the Sun Goes Down,” spent several
