POTE’S NOTES Here we are in May already and Parade season is on us. Thanks to all who came out to The Apple Blossom Parade, our traditional first Parade of the season. We had beautiful weather and a great turnout. If any Noble ever wants to Parade with us, just go to the office, grab a schedule and your fez, and show up! We will find you a ride!

by Tequila Mockingbird! I hadn’t seen the ballroom that busy for a long time.

Well the Walk for love was a little soggy again this year, but we raised over $2000 for the Transportation Fund. Thanks to Kim and Myra Evans and all their crew for a job well done.

I hear there is a Nobility Ball coming up June 10th but nobody will tell me any more than that!

Please come out and join Nancy and me for a “relaxed” evening.

Our June meeting will be an open meeting, dinner at 6:00 and an informal meeting at 7:30 with our ladies. We will have a special guest to tell us about her experience as a patient of Shriners Hospitals. Please get everyone you can think of, Shriners or not, to come listen. I will guarantee you will know why you became a Shriner after our presentation.

We created 6 new Nobles at the May meeting!

If you have candidates please get those petitions to the office, we might just initiate a new candidate every meeting if we can.

Finally, please come out and give Fez Foods a try, they are doing nightly specials, daily lunch service and things are really going well.

LEGION OF HONOR

Noble Art Haynes and Noble Harold Lister rescued the drum from the old barn

A Rescue of the Moila Shrine Drum, once used in parades but which had been lost for quite a while, was found by Noble Art Haynes, who, with his keen eyes, discovered the drum in an old barn. it became apparent to Art that the drum was headed for a burn pile. Not hesitating Art rescued the drum, bringing it to Moila Shrine Temple hoping it would be restored and again be parade ready. Art, contacted the Moila Legion of Honor Adjutant Noble Jerry Euler, and the restoration began with donations being solicited by many Nobles and aided by the hard work of coordinating this endeavor by Noble Harold Lister.

Noble Harold Lister with his many years of professional expertise in teaching music volunteered (I think he volunteered) to supervise restoration of the drum -- new heads, clean up and contacting professionals to do the art work and other necessary restoration details. The Drum was presented to the Potentate and Nobles at the May 10th meeting.

This bell was also found by Noble Art Haynes and became a part of the restoration project as well. Art found the bell resting peacefully under a tree and knew that the bell would be melted down to be made into a milk and bell bucket or such items. After much deliberation of about ten minutes, Nobles of the Legion of Honor made the decision that it would be their duty to restore the bell also and added it to the drum project.

Noble Ken Miller took responsibility for cleaning, touching up the paint making it parade worthy by staying up almost an entire night doing so just to have it ready for the Apple Blossom Parade.

The Bell was a big hit in the parade. Noble Ken pulled the bell and Noble Bernie Swartz ran the bell.

Hearing Aid Stores did a bang up business the next day.

Projects were accomplished with donated time and money for Nobles of Moila.

Saturday May 20th, marked an emotional occasion as the Legion of Honor paid tribute to Noble Billy Ray Dunham. Noble Bill was the 2nd Vice Chairman of the Legion of Honor and his enthusiasm and guidance will be sorely missed by the club. A short time after the “Celebration of Life” for Noble Dunham, the 69th Annual Commander’s dinner was held in the Walnut Room.

A social hour began at 6 PM followed by dinner at 7 PM. The dinner honored the current commander Noble Douglas Reece and all the Past Commanders of the Legion of Honor. Introductions were made, as is customary as Masonic events, of the visiting Nobles and their Ladies. Ill. Bill Bowser was the Master of Ceremonies and kept the event on a lighter note.

A great time was had by all who attended and a deep appreciation is expressed to those, who not only attended the dinner, but to those who paid their respects to the family of Billy Dunham.

Please remember that the Annual Legion of Honor Golf Tournament is coming up and well as the LOH day at the Ball Park. The information is posted elsewhere in the Messenger. Be sure to get your reservations in quickly, as both events are filling up fast.

One trip was made in the red van this month to St. Louis.

We paid out $500.00 for a patient to drive themselves to Chicago. $300 was paid out for patients to drive to St. Louis.

One patient was flown to Cincinnati for treatment this month.

Hospital expenses for meals, lodging & cab fare paid out was $206.38.

Gas expenses paid out for the van were $18.12 Total transportation costs were $1024.50

Scientists at Shriners Hospitals for Children re-wire cells to produce arthritis vaccine New SMART cell method provides hope for improved treatment of chronic conditions in kids and adults ST. LOUIS (April 27, 2017) – Using a new geneediting technology, researchers at Shriners Hospitals for Children®— St. Louis and Washington University School of Medicine have re-wired living cells to produce their own targeted arthritis-fighting vaccine. These SMART (stem cells modified for autonomous regenerative therapy) cells could offer more targeted treatment options for children and adults with inflammatory and chronic conditions.

Unlike current arthritis medications that are given continuously and at high doses, these SMART cells can sense arthritis inflammation in a particular joint and make their own natural antidote to combat it, as needed. The research will be published in the May 9 issue of the journal, Stem Cell Reports.

“For children with juvenile arthritis, this breakthrough could have significant benefits as many of the current treatment options cause unwanted side effects and may not be appropriate for children,” said Farshid Guilak, Ph.D., research senior author, director of research for the St. Louis Shriners Hospital and professor of orthopaedic surgery at Washington University School of Medicine. “Our goal is to deliver a therapy that is self-regulating and targeted specifically to inflammation in a particular joint, as

opposed to current drug therapies that impact the immune response throughout the entire body.”

To date, SMART cells have only been engineered in a laboratory using cells from mice. Human clinical trials are still a few years away. The SMART cell method could also revolutionize treatments for many other conditions.

Shriners Hospitals for Children is an international health care system providing pediatric specialty care, regardless of the families’ ability to pay. As part of its mission to conduct research that improves the quality of care to children, Shriners Hospitals opened the Pediatric Musculoskeletal Research Center opened in St. Louis in 2016.

Last year, a Shriners Hospitals’ research team lead by Dr. Guilak created a living tissue hip joint replacement for patients currently receiving synthetic replacement joints that eventually wear out. This advancement is key for children who need replacement joints since a living joint could grow with the child. SMART cell technology is also being combined with this discovery to grow a living joint with these same disease-fighting properties.

“The hope is that we can grow living bone, cartilage and whole joints that are resistant to arthritis and eventually other inflammatory diseases too,” said Dr. Guilak. “This could help adults and children suffering from juvenile, rheumatoid and other forms of arthritis, as well as other orthopaedic conditions.”

OLE TYMERS Here we are the first of May 2017, the year is half gone. Finally the good Lord is giving us some much needed sunshine after He gave us some much needed rain.

We have had several Ole Tymers with various ills. Hope we all get well and can start parading.

Not very much new news. Snow birds Jerry and Nancy have arrived home from Arizona. Our leader, Bob took his lady Beverly on a surprise trip to Bermuda. After a week of sunshine and relaxing, they are now back home to the old routine.

Richard and Caroline Woods have invited the Ole Tymers to their home for a summer picnic June 3rd.

Hope all will be able to make this fun event.

We had several cars make it through the Apple Blossom parade, led by our second in command, Wayne Nold.

We have some good Nobles almost ready to join us. Just a couple of minor items, and we will welcome them into the Ole Tymers. We want them and need them, and any other Noble with an antique vehicle. The door is always open. Come on in and join us!

HOT SAND BUGS Parade season is here and the Bugs are all ready to go! We had a great turnout at the Apple Blossom Parade and look forward to the rest of the season. Don’t forget we always have some extra seats, so grab your fez and come ride with us.

Several of us enjoyed the Cinco De Mayo Party -- lots of friends, great food and great music. Way to go Fez Foods for putting on a great party. We also enjoyed the Kentucky Derby Party the next day. There were several big hats and the Mint Juleps were awesome!

It’s not been easy being a Hot Sand Bug, or a Lady Bug lately. We have had all sorts of surgeries, hospital stays for one thing or another. And two visits from the Black Camel. We will continue on and keep our bugs running to represent Moila and Shriners Hospitals for Children as best we can.
