It’s magic this Saturday!

David Sandy to light up Courter stage

Christmas around the Square will be magical this year — in more ways than one. New this year will be a magic show by Daviess County native David Sandy. Sandy will be performing at the Courter Theater from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, during the seventh annual Christmas around the Square event, which is sponsored by the Friends of Gallatin/Christmas Around the Square Committee. “I am looking forward to presenting my show and entertaining everyone who joins us at the Courter Theater on Nov. 23,” says Sandy. “The show is very family-friendly and is geared for both adults and children. It will include lots of audience participation, comedy, and of course, magic. It’ll be a lot of fun for the entire family.” Sandy took up magic as a hobby at the young age of six. After entertaining his fellow firstgraders with a simple card trick taught to him by his father, David was hooked. “I did my very first magic performance in Gallatin when I was only seven years old,” recalls Sandy. “Even though that was 49 years ago, I remember it well... it was at Dockery Park.” As a youngster, he began entertaining at service organization banquets, scouting events, local meetings and schools. His reputation as a great entertainer even as a teenager took him to resorts, theaters and conventions where he was often the featured entertainer. At the age

of 14, he met Faucett W. Ross, a retired professional magician who lived in St. Joseph. Faucett became David’s close friend and mentor. David Sandy has been entertaining professionally throughout the heart of America and along both coasts since the 1970s, including regular appearances at the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, Calif. David has been twice awarded the title of “Stage Magician of the Year,” in addition to being named “Close-Up Magician of the Year” from Ring 129 of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. He is also a member of the prestigious Inner Magic

Circle of London, England, and an honorary lifetime member of the world-famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, CA. In addition to his busy performing schedule, David works as a producer of a variety of touring shows, symphonic concerts, festivals and special events. “Even though my magic has taken me all over the world, I absolutely love coming back and performing in the area where I grew up and it all started,” Sandy says. There are plenty of other holiday activities planned for Nov. 23. See the Christmas Around the Square ad in the Ad Zone or North Missourian for details.

“Gilligan’s Island The Musical” has come aground on stage at the Courter Theater in Gallatin. The show is set for 7 p.m. on Nov. 21-2223. Tickets are on sale at Eileine’s Beauty Shop in Gallatin and one hour prior to show time.

Toys for Tots underway, community support urged In an effort to make this holiday season a little brighter for children aged newborn to 11 years, the Gallatin Police will once again facilitate the Toys for Tots program for Gallatin and Daviess County. Chief Mark Richards has delivered collection barrels in Gallatin to Dollar General and the Lake Viking office, and donation jars to Casey’s, Dungy’s, Corner Café, Subway and Mi Mexico. Anyone wishing to make a donation can drop off new, unwrapped toys to any of the drop off boxes or make a monetary donation to the jar. Anyone wanting to request an item can pick up a wish list from the Adventist Community Service Center (only open on

Wednesdays) or from Gallatin City Hall. Return the applications to city hall. Watch for more information on the Gallatin Police social media site. The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity which was created at the behest of the U.S. Marine Corps in 1991. Chief Richards is designated as the Toys for Tots Coordinator for the community. “The Gallatin Police have been organizing the Toys for Tots program for the past 11 years,” Chief Richards says. “All donations stay local and the program is coordinated locally. Last year, 90 families, most with two or more children, received toys.”

Shopko was a sponsor of the Toys for Tots program. Now that the store has closed, the community will be relied on more than ever. As coordinator, Chief Richards is responsible for planning, organizing and conducting the campaign. He picks up the toys and stores them in central warehouses, which for Gallatin is a donated storage unit. At Christmas, Chief Richards, with the assistance of local students from Gallatin High School and local volunteers, distributes the toys to the less fortunate children in Gallatin and Daviess County. The objectives of Toys for Tots are to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of

Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future. The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens. Area businesses wishing to become a drop-off point or anyone wanting to make a donation to support the program can call Gallatin Police at 660-663-3580. Presbyterian Church Pastor Jim North will speak at this Gallatin Ministerial Alliance event
