QUIETLY, PHOTO WORKSHOPPERS DOCUMENT STORIES IN BOONVILLE It was a big week in Boonville. The historic river town in the center of the state hosted the 71st annual Missouri Photo Workshop. hirty-nine photographers came to town for eight days to learn documentary photojournalism. It’s a method started by Cliff Edom, MU professor, in 1949. His idea started teaching press photographers to stop posing pictures to start making photo stories. The idea works. Back then press photographers used 4x5 cameras. The film measured 4x5 inches, each frame developed individually. The real advance came years later with 35mm cameras. A roll of film held 36 frames. These “miniature” cameras were tiny compared to 4x5. Photo skills shifted to candid pictures of people doing their jobs. Workshoppers learn to be less intrusive and not direct actions. They learn to capture fleeting moments in lives of subjects. The equipment differs now. Digital cameras hold almost unlimited capacity. There’s no longer a limit of 36 frames per roll of Tri-X film. Limitless digital frames become a burden. When snapping free and easy, it becomes a big job to edit photos down to eight or 10 needed for a story. Today, faculty limits 400
photos for the week. Today’s students fret with limits. Some can’t stop snapping and use half their frames the first morning. The teachers mean only 400 frames, no more. MPW teaches patience. Wait and see brings a new mode. It’s look and learn. Make only pictures that tell a story. Saturday at workshop end a stream of Boonville people came to see what photographers saw. It’s amazing. These days many visitors carry cameras, in their cellphones. More pictures were made. Selfies show subject and “their photographer.” I overheard one workshopper tell his amazement. “When I came here I thought no one would allow me into their home; but my subjects welcomed me. Now, they want me to come back.” Cliff Edom knew small town people accept strangers. It still happens. Long ago at a workshop I heard a photographer from New York tell his amazement: “People I pass on the street say 'Hi' to me.” That doesn’t happen in big cities. After 37 workshops, I see changes; but friendliness of rural people remains. My history with MPW, reaches longer than anyone. I first attended as a workshop student back in 1960. I was

I wrote stories and shot oneframe posed photo to illustrate them. I lugged along a 4x5 press camera. After MPW, I brought a “miniature” camera to MU Extension to make press photos. Much later, I returned to MPW on the faulty. More amazing, later Cliff named me MPW co-director in 1986 when he retired. By then I not only made photos, but also taught ag journalism. Cliff chose me for my experience extending information to farmers across the state. I’d learned to teach adults. Bill Kuykendall, professor leading MU photojournalism, and I ran the school for years. Others lead now. I attend as co-director emeritus. I help with words. Photojournalism by its name combines pictures and words. Every photo needs words. A photo is worth a 1,000 words, myth says. Each photo raises lots of questions. Captions reinforce pictures in a neat pairing. Facebook photographers rarely learn that. Even selfies need words. Often family photos leave too many questions. Next time you post snapshots on Facebook add words. A few words will tell: who, what, when, where and why. That’s the minimum. In 71 years MPW documented 50 towns.
