Medicare Has Different Parts Medicare A - Part A helps cover inpatient care in hospitals, including critical access hospitals, and skilled nursing facilities (not custodial or long-term care). It also helps cover hospice care and some home health care. Beneficiaries must meet certain conditions to get these benefits. Most people do not pay a premium for Part A because they or a spouse has already paid for it through their payroll taxes while working. Medicare B – Part B helps cover physicians, medical professional services and outpatient care. It also helps cover some other medical service that Part A does not cover, such as some the services of physical and occupation therapists, and some home health care. Part B helps pay for these covers services and supplies when they are medically necessary. Most people pay a monthly premium for Part B. Medicare D – Medicare Part D, Prescription Drug Coverage is available to everyone with Medicare. To get a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (PDP), people must join a plan approved by Medicare that offers Medicare Drug coverage. BOOK SALE AT PUBLIC LIBRARY BRINGS RIGOROUS COMPETITION Saturday some hiked to Faurot Field for MU Tigers first home game. They saw a welcome win over West Virginia to sooth nerves from a season-opening whomping at Wyoming. For others, book lovers, Saturday was fall sale at Columbia library. I went elbow to elbow with fellow faculty and buyers from used-book stores. For most it’s pleasure. Dealers build their businesses. I’ve seen an owner of our downtown used-book store. He grabs box loads of used books. Castoffs from the library mix with donations from library patrons. Some folks empty their bookshelves. I buy a poetry book for 50 cents that a store owner could sell for $8. I gain by going early to compete with those bullying buyers. I’ve had them snatch books I reached for. Sales start early for Friends of the Library. A $5 membership is worth it. I moderate my buys, with cases full of books to read or re-read. But, I like “new� used books. I left with only half a book bag full. But, at home, late afternoon, I thought of books
I’d resisted. I left with five books I really needed. And, I left many more. (I’ll stick to writing this afternoon.) The sale resumes Sunday afternoon, ending with a grocery sack sale. Hope I can resist. Today, instead of writing early, I started Malcolm Gladwell’s latest book. Earlier he’d written “Tipping Point.� That’s about what it takes for an idea to take off and become a “must do.� \Dave Patterson, MU beef repro specialist, talked about a heifer tipping point while we drove to Thompson Farm. What will it take for beef farmers to reach a point where all will boost their herds through timed AI and known genomics? Opportunities are huge. Research from Spickard is free to take. No elbow-toelbow competition. MU heifer protocols lead to time savings at breeding and calving. That should appeal to all. Big payoffs come two ways. Replacement heifers sell for premiums. If kept at home, they improve the cow herd. (That’s the biggest pay off). SMS steermates bring grid price premiums. Either way, that can bring a $500 bonus. Wouldn’t ideas that bring
an extra $500 per calf bring tipping? Maybe some owners just haven’t read stories in the news about Show-Me-Select. I’m concerned about readership, in this age of Face Book and Twitter. I see too much pass-along copy, often of needless hate. We need good ideas. For love or profits. When I went back to the library book sale, I was shocked. Used to be by afternoon, tables were well picked over if not bare. This time, it seemed too many were full. Few buyers were picking up remains. Do people not need books? The times they are changing. I do read Tweets. One said college freshmen aren’t flocking to football games. I drove by a student favored tavern on Broadway. The crowd overflowed onto the sidewalk before game was over. recall as an MU freshman, we all had season tickets. They were high priced. As I recall, maybe $1 per game. But I recall I could see a John Wayne movie for 25 cents. The Malcom Gladwell book I’m hooked on and yearn to get back to is “Blink.� That’s about how fast we make decisions--without thinking. We decide before we think. Well, that saves time. But, maybe thinking about how to breed cows the modern way might be worth some skull time.
