MAGICAL RAINBOW SHOW WRAPS UP AN MU EXTENSION-MEETING WEEK A rainbow, more perfect than any seen in years, ended a week of Extension meetings. It didn’t lead to a pot of gold, but ended a weary-butt week. After a light rain, I left the supermarket to find people in the street looking east. They saw a perfect bow of colored light across the sky. Behind it another faint rainbow arched the sky. Driving to supper I crossed Columbia eastward into the light show. It grew dimmer, as I saw people standing on lawns and street corners admiring the show. Most had cellphone cameras documenting the beauty. The light show just called attention to moisture in the air. The sun, sinking below clouds to the west, found open sky. The break allowed sun rays to shine through rain drops in the air. All rays refracted into a light show. Through the ages, rainbows attracted folklore on their meaning. For me, it happily ended a week of day-long meetings. They used to be called Extension Annual Conference. Now it’s the Summit. Somehow in planning, administrators failed to include sessions on agricul-
ture. Some state Ag specialists put together a day of ag lessons in front of meetings now called "Engagements." In those first-day ag lessons I learned while still fresh to learn. Best was new information for regional staff, now called “field specialists.� Industrial Hemp, led the way. I learned much and must learn more. Hemp will be popular with farmers as a new high-dollar cash crop. Earlier this year at the Soybean Symposium I overheard at break times, farmers discussing hemp. Now, those farmers need to hear, what I heard. There’ll be no crop subject to more government oversight than hemp. This is about fiber hemp; not “medicinal� hemp. This week speakers were from MU Ag Extension and Missouri Department of Agriculture. New rules will come out soon. Soybean farmers may envision buying bags of hemp seed, putting them in planter boxes and becoming hemp farmers. Wait! First they must apply for permits. Then, intensive farming will follow, with lots to learn. Years ago, I covered a major Missouri crop that faded away: Tobacco. That crop took lots of hand labor. Hemp will also. If there are
tobacco barns still standing, they gain a new life in curing hemp. First there’s need for local processing and marketing. The main idea: Farmers should sign a market contract before buying seed. There’ll be jobs for journalists to understand and translate complex rules into farmer talk. Teaching will be needed. If I remembered all I heard after that talk, I'd write a book. But, it’ll take translating science into farm talk. It’ll take time. During long days of Engagement, I recalled early training in Extension teaching. Back then, retired county Maybe it was there I learned that minds cannot absorb more than butts can endure. This past week our days started at 7 a.m. breakfast and ended at 7 p.m. “afterdinner� lectures. Experienced field staff commented on those agendas. There’s plenty of new research on adult learning. Little of it’s being applied. Daniel Kahneman, a Nobel Prize “behavioral economist� wrote a thick book on learning. One key point, if people hear an hour lecture they may retain three ideas. "Ted Talks,� a brevity movement, says talks over 20 minutes are wasted breath. Listeners can beat long lectures by taking notes. I see few adults doing it; but young farmers bring composition books to meetings. I have three notebooks of notes from this week. Those are still to be processed.
