EARLY KILLING FROST JUST MISSED MID-MISSOURI AND SOUTH AREAS Mid-Missouri weather flirted with frost Saturday morning. But it was nothing like the cold in Northern Corn Belt states. Our low at MU Sanborn Field was 33F, staying above killing-frost of 28F. I’d sent a news release last week for Pat Guinan, MU Extension climatologist. He expects first frost in central counties in mid-October. We’re close. He also told how September temperatures were like August normal. High temps became the trend for the year. Climatology, long-term weather, shows warming months year by year in the last decade. With warming, I’d thought we’d see delayed killing frosts. When flooding last spring slowed planting, soybeans were behind all year on setting pods, turning color or filling pods. Warm weather, especially at night, helped speed soybean maturity. Weather across Missouri grows spottier. That showed up with scattered rains in September. Some North Missourians received 10 and 11 inches of rain, while in southern corners of the state some stations had less than half inch. Weather is volatile, but commodity prices are jumpier. Weather affects potential grain in the bin. Less grain brings higher prices and vice
versa. Feed prices affect livestock prices. Being a farmer takes being a climate watcher and futures market follower. Recent world supply reports showed plentiful corn. On that news, prices slumped. Then weather reports came for northern states telling winter coming early. That bounced prices back up. Hang on, there’ll be more volatility. I note that the Corn Belt crept northward with warming in the last 10 years. When I started writing farm news, Minnesota wasn't considered Corn Belt. This past crop season in his weekly Extension teleconference, Pat Guinan revealed meteorologists’ secrets. Old weather models used for years don’t work well for this Maybe like me you didn’t notice weather forecasters never saying “no rain.” There’s always a chance for rain even in droughts. Now, I do notice most forecasts add: “20 percent chance for showers.” That covers whatever. It’d be interesting to check forecasts ahead of the 11.15inch rainfall at Princeton in September or the Bootheel 0.51 inch at More than supply-and-demand markets and weather forecasts throw variables into market prices. New threats cost Missouri farmers millions of dollars. Those are
unexpected Tariff Tweets. Missouri farm commodity groups led in sending delegations to the Far East. They opened trade. This helped soybean and beef prices in particular. Free trade was working just fine. Then the government bypassed free enterprise and took on driving markets. That’s when rural areas suffered. No market model predicts those political storms. A recent non-government Tweet told an alarming large percentage of people read not one book a year. Here’s a book that may be worth reading in rural Missouri. After all, agriculture remains our No. 1 income. A headline in the New York Times Book Review on Sunday, Oct. 13, caught my eyes: “Meat Is Murder: Jonathan Safran Foer links our food choices to climate crisis.” The book title: “We Are the Weather.” The reviewer doubts a book will stop us eating cheeseburgers, referred to as junk food. But, I sense both reviewer and author think laws need be passed. Such laws slowed use of tobacco. But, it’s not just one book promoting ideas of meatless diets. In social media and main media there’s growing aim to change farming. The “no-meat” book came in the same week the New York Times ran a full-page story on health research on benefits of eating beef. In a few days a smaller story claimed that research was supported by animal agriculture. The door opens for discussion on meatlessness. Tell me: duanedailey7@gmail.com.

The Third Circuit Treatment Program has a full-time position for a Treatment Court Case Manager that will cover Grundy, Harrison, Mercer and Putnam Counties. This is a position that helps connect criminal offenders that are in our Treatment Court Program with community resources and helps coordinate communication between service agencies and with the Treatment Court Team. The individual selected will be the primary interface between Treatment Court and county health departments, extension offices, vocational rehabilitation services, community action agencies and local churches that provide assistance to participants. The case manager is expected to attend all meetings and staffing, and submit progress reports at weekly staffing. Additional duties include working with treatment providers and probation officers to monitor participant progress by monitoring drug testing, work and school attendance. Position requires ability to work effectively with team, participants, and all agencies that support Treatment Court goals and objectives. The ability to collaborate with all agencies that provide aid and assistance to Treatment Court participants. Successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively (written and verbal). A bachelor’s degree in any social science discipline or equivalent work experience required. The individual will be supervised by the Treatment Court Coordinator and report to the Circuit Judge and the Treatment Court Team. The salary has been set at $33,000 annually. There are no benefits with this position. This position is being funded by a grant that will run for three years.
