October Is Breast Cancer Awareness

Local Women Lending A Helping Hand

by Diane Lowrey R-T Editor “You have breast cancer.” These are words no woman wants to hear but, according to the Center for Disease Control National Program of Cancer Registries, 14 women in Grundy County will receive that news in 2018. Breast cancer is the second leading cancer among women and also the second leading cause of cancer death. Hearing that diagnosis can be scary and a bit overwhelming, with many unanswered questions and thoughts about “what’s next.” Locally, the Grundy County Breast Cancer Support Group is available to help Grundy County women diagnosed with this disease navigate their way through all the questions and uncertainties they are sure to face within

the next several months. The group is made up of local women who are breast cancer survivors - women who have been through the experience of diagnosis and treatment and now want to offer their support to those now in a similar situation. “It started as an idea,” said Ruby Walker who, along with Cindy Jennings, was instrumental in setting up the organization. “Cindy called me while I was going through chemotherapy to give me support and during our conversations, we realized that there was a need in the community for a support group for women like us who are going through breast cancer.” “Any time you hear the word cancer, it’s scary,” Mrs. Jennings said. “And I remember the support I received when I got my diagnosis and

how much it helped having someone who could understand what I was going through. So that’s when we decided to get organized.” The goal of the group is to help patients “maneuver through their difficult journey with resources and information.” In addition to the personal support through talks and visits, Mrs. Walker said the group supplies newly-diagnosed patients with items that they (survivors) have found helpful during their treatments and recovering. The group has put together “comfort and care bags” which contain items such as lip balm, lotions, dry shampoo, heating pads, headbands/turbans, soft booties/socks, back scratchers, books and cold packs/rice bags. Heartshaped pillows that can be placed

DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

SECTIONALS: Trenton vs. Lathrop, Wednesday, Oct. 17 - 6 p.m. - Griffin Field, Trenton, MO

Trenton players hoist the Class 2, District 16 championship plaque following a 5-3 victory over host Hamilton in the championship game on Saturday. The district title is Trenton’s third in the past four years and the sixth in the program’s history.

WINNING THE MOMENT

On the Trenton High School softball team there is a wealth of experience when it comes to big games like Saturday’s Class 2, District 16 championship in Hamilton. With five seniors who have played in seven district title games now across their careers in softball and basketball combined, perhaps it was fitting that freshman Chandler Lynch stepped into the batter’s box at the game’s biggest moment. With Trenton leading 3-2 in the third inning, Lynch found herself at the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. After fouling off several pitches with two strikes, Lynch rocketed a ball down the first base line to drive in two runs and push the Trenton lead to 5-2. That would turn out to be the game-winning hit as Trenton held on for a 5-3 win to lay claim to the Class 2, District 16 championship, the team’s third in four seasons and sixth in the last 10. “I was just thinking if I got it in play, (the ball) would probably go through and we would score at least one, Lynch said. “That’s what I was thinking, just put it in play. It was really cool, everyone cheering and everything. It was really nerve-wracking, but everyone cheering for me kind of helped me through it. For Trenton, the win not only earned the Bulldogs the district championship, but it avenged a loss to Hamilton in last year’s district final played in Trenton. The Bulldogs lost that game 2-1 when they were caught potentially looking ahead to a meeting with Lathrop later in the state playoffs. There was no looking ahead on Saturday as Trenton ambushed Hamilton starter Julia Kanoy, plating three runs in the top of the first before the host Hornets ever had a chance to step into the box. Trenton’s pitcher Ainsley Tolson was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and, after stealing second, Mykah Hurley roped a ball into left field to score Tolson and put Trenton up 1-0 just two batters into the game. “I think our mindset coming in was just that

we don’t want it to end yet, Tolson said of herself and her fellow seniors. “We love playing with each other and we just want to keep going as long as we can. So we were going to do anything and everything we could to win that ballgame. Three batters after Hurley’s RBI, Trenton scored again when Hamilton’s right fielder mishandled a line drive off the bat of Taylor Richman. Hurley scored on the play and Maci Moore would score as well on a fielder’s choice by Sidney Lynch to give Trenton the early 3-0 lead. The rout appeared to be on when Tolson retired the first Hornet hitter on one pitch. But Hamilton responded, using two Trenton errors

and an RBI single to score twice in the bottom of the first. Trenton kept on Kanoy, however, putting runners on second and third in the second with just one out, but the Bulldogs couldn’t plate either runner. In the third, Trenton’s offense was at it again, loading the bases for Lynch, who came through in the pressure situation. “It was a huge at-bat by Chandler there to give us those last two runs, Trenton head Coach John Cowling said. “She fought through several pitches in that at bat and fouled a couple off and then took that one down the first-base line. For a freshman to step up in that situation is a big spot, good job for her. Hamilton would get one of the runs back in

the bottom of the frame on a solo home run by Graycen Prothero, but that proved to be the final run of the game as both teams got very stingy defensively. Trenton got some stellar play in the field as Moore elevated to pluck a lined shot out of the air for an out and Richman made a sliding grab in left field to take away another Hamilton hit. “I think you see that in big games like this, Cowling said of the runs scored early by both teams. “Both teams made a couple of mistakes early and had a couple of balls get away from them, but I’m proud of the way we locked in and didn’t give up anything after that. With the win, Trenton moved to 24-2 overall on the season. Hamilton, meanwhile, saw its season end at 17-3. Tolson allowed only two baserunners after the Prothero home run, one of which reached on an error. She consistently quieted Hamilton, picking up the win while striking out eight batters. Hamilton handed Trenton one of its two losses on the season back in September by a 43 score. But Trenton didn’t pitch Tolson in that game, denying the Hornets a chance for any advanced scouting. “I think it helped us a lot, just so they didn’t see the movement on (Tolson’s) pitches, they didn’t know when she was going to throw the change-up or when she would throw the curve ball, Cowling said. “Her control is just great, so every team is going to go in there swinging, but to not have seen her once already was a big advantage for us. Trenton will now venture into the state playoffs once again, where Brooke Huitt and the Lathrop Mules again wait. Lathrop defeated Trenton in sectionals in 2015 and in the state quarterfinals in 2016, both times on the arm of Huitt. Huitt fired a one-hit shutout of Plattsburg in the Class 2, District 15 final on Saturday as the Mules advanced 1-0. The sectional match-up with Lathrop is scheduled for Wednesday at Trenton’s Griffin Field. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m.

Trenton Airs It Out, Defeats Polo For Second Win

As a steady mist began to descend from the sky on Friday night in Polo, the Trenton Bulldogs were not about to stop throwing the football. When you are 1-6 on the season, you are not afforded the luxuries of picking and choosing. You do what works. On Friday night, throwing the ball worked. Trenton aired it out 20 times – something not seen in a Trenton football game in a long time - and escaped Polo with a 32-28 victory – win number two for the beleaguered Bulldogs. “Yeah, man, that took everything we had, Trenton Coach Brandon Boswell said. “Hats off to Polo, those kids fought too, but our kids, (we had) just a lot of fight from them. Trenton led 26-20 in the fourth quarter when the mist began to precipitate. Passing the ball had helped put Trenton in front so the Bulldogs continued to air it out in the wet conditions. Trenton faced three third downs on what would be the game-clinching drive. The first was converted with a pass to Jaren Whitney, the next on a pass to Jadan Whitney and the last back to Jaren. After Jaren’s last catch put Trenton in the red zone, Jadan ran the ball in from three yards out to push the lead to two possessions with just over six minutes left in the game. “A big part of it was just holding onto the football, Jadan Whitney said. “But Jaren did a good job of catching the ball and making a move or two to get up the field and get us the first down. Jaren Whitney finished the game with seven catches for 93 yards. Jadan Whitney had two catches for 21 yards and a touchdown and added 73 yards rushing and two more touch-

downs on 13 carries. Asked who quarterback Sam Schilling’s favorite target is, Jadan Whitney replied, “Probably Jaren right now. Jaren Whitney has made his presence felt as a receiver in the past five games, catching 18 balls for 375 yards in that span. “Our offensive line did very well with pass protection, Boswell said. “Just up front we did a pretty good job of giving Sam enough time and then for Sam to be able to set his feet on a really sloppy field and deliver a good ball was big, too. Then you get those boys being able to catch a wet ball and that’s all great stuff. I think we are kind of seeing now what we can do. We had several guys step up and make plays tonight. I just think it shows our resiliency. Polo’s field, like most in the northern half of the state, had taken on a lot of water in the days, and even hours, before kickoff. Fearing a repeat of the Gallatin game in week three, when the Bulldogs turned the ball over five times in wet, rainy conditions, Trenton incorporated a shotgun snap that was used almost all night. “It was pretty bad, Jadan Whitney said of the conditions. “I thought practice had been bad this week, but when we got here, your foot sunk in almost up to the ankle. The conditions bit Polo early on when a slick ball was snapped over the Panther punter’s head and out of the back of the end zone for a safety. That got Trenton on the board in a night that saw the Bulldogs score in every manner possible in a football game. Trenton recorded points on the safety, a field goal, multiple touchdowns, a two-point conversion and an extra-point kick. Trenton’s lead reached 9-0 after Jadan Whitney’s first touchdown run of the game, but the Panthers fought back, faking a punt that led to a 45yard touchdown pass. The Panthers then took their first lead of the game on a 45-yard interception return late in the first half. Trenton scored twice in the final minute of the first half, however Mark Trump, who led Trenton with 81 rushing yards on 21 carries, scored on a three-yard run and ran in a two-point conversion. After getting the ball back, a big pass to Jaren Whitney set up a 25yard field goal try, which freshman kicker Conner Crawford nailed with 0.9 seconds showing on the clock. At halftime, Trenton held a 20-14 ad-

vantage. Trenton pushed the lead to 26-14 on Schilling’s lone touchdown pass of the night, a six-yard strike to Jadan Whitney. But Polo wasn’t dead yet. The Panthers, who continually ran Nick Myers off the right edge play after play most of the night, finally got one to break and Myers scampered 64 yards for the score. Polo would drive to the 31-yard line on its next possession, but turned the ball over on downs, setting up Trenton’s final scoring drive. The Panthers again made things interesting, intercepting a pass with just over two minutes left in the game. The Panthers parlayed the turnover into points, but used much of the remaining clock to do so. In the end, Payden McCullough fell on an onside kick with 16 seconds left, allowing Trenton to kneel out victory number two on the season. “There were times when it felt like snatching defeat from the jaws of victory again, Boswell said. “But, our kids stuck it out and they fought, so I’m very proud of them for that. Trenton moved to 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the Grand River Conference with the win. The Bulldogs host Maysville in the regular season finale this Friday at C.F. Russell Stadium. It will be Senior Night for Trenton. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Bulldog Bark by Dan Wiebers Trenton R-9 Superintendent

RISSLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Fun fact - S.M. Rissler Elementary, which was originally constructed in 1962, is named after Trenton R-9 Superintendent, S.M. Rissler who served as superintendent of the district from 1937 to 1964. In this Bulldog Bark, I would like to share facts about the Trenton R-I9 District’s elementary school, S.M. Rissler Elementary. S.M. Rissler Elementary sits on the west side of Trenton at the address of 801 W. 4th Terrace. During the 2018-2019 school year approximately 390 students, grades kindergarten through fourth, attend classes in the building. In addition, another 130 students attend the Trenton R-9 Pre-School which has been housed at S.M. Rissler Elementary since 2011. The building is led by Principal, Tiffany Otto, who is assisted by assistant principal Kayli Burrell and Director of Special Services Tara Hoffman. Forty-six certified staff members fill roles as classroom, specials, and special education teachers as well as guidance counselors. Sixteen para-professionals, two Parents as Teachers staff, one nurse, five cooks two custodians, and three secretaries assist with making Rissler a great place to learn. If you are interested in learning more about the curriculum offered at S.M. Rissler Elementary, please check out the Trenton R9 website. Select Rissler as the site, and under news, look for the curriculum videos. Even if you do

T

not have children in these grades, it is impressive to see what the students in elementary school are doing on a daily basis. All of the hard work provided by the staff and students of S.M. Rissler Elementary has been recognized. Since 2015, S.M. Rissler has earned 100 percent of the points available on the state’s Annual Performance Report. Improved academic achievement and increased attendance has allowed the elementary school to receive this recognition. The staff at Rissler have also been recognized as a Silver Level Positive Behavior Support School. This is a state award that recognizes the work the building staff have done to improve student behavior. Finally, I thought I would finish this Bark off with comments made at Rissler Elementary. I asked the following question, “what do you like about Rissler Elementary,” to students and staff. Here are some of the responses I received. Sarah Jackson, Title I Teacher, commented, “the kids” and “getting to learn and have fun.” Marla Stratton, Title para stated, “the kids are fun and willing to learn.” Finally, student Bryar Foster, commented, “you get to see your friends.” These comments are a true reflection of what happens at S.M. Rissler. Students and staff arrive at Rissler every day to see their friends, to learn and to have fun.

by Sarah Bird, CTE Department Chair/Business Instructor and Ronda Copple, Accounting Instructor The Business and Technology Department as North Central Missouri College is not only welcoming new freshmen, but programs are changing, technology is being added and our club is getting students involved. The Business and Technology department is now offering Sports Management as a new certificate and a new emphasis area for the AAS degree. We are excited to offer this new curriculum to students and we feel that it will help students find their passion by combining sports and business. The new courses offered are Introduction to Sports Management, Sports Communication and Structure and Governance of Sport. The certificate and emphasis area includes these classes as well as many of our current business offerings. The Business and Technology Department prides itself on keeping up with technology as well as the developing interest of our students. A tour to Arrowhead Stadium this fall will expose students to jobs combining both sports and business. Constant improvement in technology is something we always strive to achieve. The Business and Technology Department has recently added a laser engraver, vinyl cutter and t-shirt press. These devices are teaching students about business operations and production technology. Students enjoy watching a concept develop from planning to production This allows them to apply their business knowledge to create something that is cost effective and has the possibility of being sold. These machines are being used in Entrepreneurship and Accounting II classes, as well as Business Club and Upward Bound. With the addition of the sports management portion of our program, we have also purchased Go Pros for video development. This gives our Sports Management students some real marketing production skills. All equipment was bought with Enhancement and Perkins funding. A Business Club has recently been formed and includes: informational meetings, field trips, guest speakers, and service projects. Students are able to develop teamwork, leadership and networking skills, expand their resume, community service, build lifelong friendships and have fun. We believe that participating in an extracurricular organization can help students gain skills and make connections that will help them be more well-rounded individuals as they enter the workforce. The Business and Technology Department also works with local and regional business professionals on an advisory committee. The advisory team helps provide guidance on program and curriculum ideas and changes. The committee serves as a partner and offers assistance with internships, mock interviewing, previewing portfolios, guest speakers and also providing business tours to our students. We are very fortunate to have many volunteers that assist us throughout the year to help make our program an excellent learning / opportunity for students. We are always growing and changing to meet the needs of our students. ACO provides free data, information, resources, and rankings about pursuing affordable higher education. In recent rankings, the NCMC online health science program ranked sixth in the nation. "In our seventh annual survey of online learning programs across the nation, we wanted to honor the colleges and universities that are providing innovative ways for students to complete a degree," said Dan Schuessler, CEO and founder of AffordableCollegesOnline.org. "These schools are going above and beyond the industry standard to help make online education programs more accessible and affordable." In addition to providing items to stock the bags, Mrs. Walker noted that donations would also be made available to help with other needs associated with the cancer recovery process, including transportation or meal costs during treatment. “Depending on the type of treatment that may be required, some women may be going out of town on a daily basis for several days and the costs to make those trips add up,” Mrs. Walker said. “We are lucky that we have chemotherapy available (at Wright Memorial Hospital), but not everyone can use those services based on the treat-

cause we had figured out how to help. She was surprised by how off-putting she can be to old players and new players and by how some have felt intimidated by her citing rules and the proper way to play. The chairwoman has agreed to run the group with changing weekly volunteers to make things more fair and to help her. Without your excellent input and advice, we most likely would have ended the group. Thank you again for showing that honesty and working together are ways to resolution. We really would have been stuck without your advice. -Happy and Satisfied Golf Gal Dear Golf Gal: Talk about a hole-in-one! Your letter made my day. Thanks for the followup. I'm thrilled my advice helped, but the main kudos goes to you for using honest, kind and open communication to solve what had become a serious problem in your golf circle. I always love hearing from readers who have taken my advice, to see how it worked out, whether it solved the problem or it made it worse. Readers: If you've ever taken my advice, please drop me a line.

Dear Annie: I am writing in response to your suggestion to "Wants to Keep the Peace on Our Peaceful Road" to hang a sign on the portion of the street where speeding is not an issue. It sounds as though Sally the Sign Purchaser thinks that drivers need to bend to her will, versus thinking that she should be responsible for her pets and grandchildren. If I were her neighbor, I, too, would want to politely decline hanging up her sign. Let's be real. Drivers understand the hazards of the road. A sign indicating that pets or children may be present is completely unnecessary. According to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association, 68 percent of U.S. households, or about 85 million families, own a pet. In 2012, according to census data, 66 percent of households were family households. With percentages that high, a sign is not warranted. Sally needs to be the responsible one; her neighbors, their guests and others traveling in the neighborhood should not be going above and beyond for a careless and entitled neighbor. -Dawn W. Dear Dawn W.: Yes, perhaps I was a bit too sympathetic to the sign purchaser in my original response. Thank you for the data. COPYRIGHT 2018 CREATORS.COM

Dear Annie: My father has late-stage Alzheimer's and is in a nursing home. Do I send an invitation addressed to my dad and mom, my mom alone or my mom plus one? I want to acknowledge the fact that he is still alive, but I don't want to act as if I have my head stuck in the ground. I'm more interested in respecting them as a couple and as individuals than in formal etiquette. I appreciate any advice you can offer. -Conflicted Daughter Dear Conflicted Daughter: The very fact that you are writing this letter expressing your concern shows that you are not an ostrich with your head stuck in the ground. Quite the opposite. You are aware of everyone's feelings and want to respect them as a couple. Address the invitation to both your mom and your dad. Though he might not be mentally all there, he is still alive and thus deserving of the invitation. Dear Annie: I wrote to you about the falling-apart golf group for ladies. We took your suggestion about talking to the chairwoman about the issues. Four of us went to speak to her. We were kind and caring, and we all felt better afterward be-

Railroad profits on track Major freight railroads will almost certainly be asked this month about how recent developments in international trade will affect their businesses. All the major U.S. freight railroads are scheduled to report earnings over the next few weeks. Even though it may not show up in the profit numbers yet, the new trade agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada will certainly be a topic.
