Briefs... Park Board Workshop The Trenton Park Board will be holding a workshop tonight (Wednesday) rather than its regular monthly board meeting. The workshop will be at 5:15 and will be held in the park superintendent’s office. Both the pool and facilities committees will be meeting.

Bridge Bids Opened A Columbia contractor has the apparent low bid for construction of the new 17th Street Bridge. Six bids were opened by Trenton city officials on Friday afternoon and Boone Construction submitted the lowest bid price of $2,339,736.75. The bid is just over $150,000 more than the estimate given to the city over a year ago by its engineers, Olsson and Associates. Urton said the original estimate was $2,180,000. Boone Construction was the contractor for the Charlie Dye Bridge. Bids for the project ranged from the low bid from Boone Construction to a bid of $3,041,705 from Emery Sapp and Sons, which has offices in Kansas City and Columbia. Urton said engineers will now review all six bids before making a recommendation to the Trenton City Council at its Sept. 9 meeting. The council bid approval, Urton said, would be contingent upon approval by the Missouri Department of Transportation, which is also helping to fund the project.

Coffee With A Cop The Trenton Police Department will hold “Coffee with a Cop” on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Landes Oil Amoco, located at 1841 E. 28th St. The event will take place from 8 to 10 a.m. Citizens are invited to visit with members of the police department and ask questions about the department, special programs or law enforcement in general. The police department is also asking that local businesses or organizations wanting to host a “Coffee with a Cop” event to contact the TPD. ********** MAIN STREET TRENTON BAGS, BEER & BBQ Saturday, Sept. 7 Chumbley’s Mean Bean Bag Toss at 1 p.m. Beer Run, Walk, Crawl at 5:30 p.m. Meal at The Space 6 p.m.

TRENTON ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Classes Gather For Annual Reunion The 70th annual Trenton High School alumni reunion is now history and plans are already under way for the 2020 edition. Record numbers were reported at each of the all-alumni events over the weekend and most of the special classes shared similar responses with great attendance. Officers of the Foundation Trust for THS/THS Alumni Association were reelected at the organization’s annual meeting on Sunday with Dr. John Holcomb re-elected president; Steve Muff, vice president; Steve Maxey, secretary; and Katie Kinney, treasurer. Plans were adopted for the reactivation of the THS Alumni Association Scholarship to a graduating THS senior, beginning this year, with $300 to be presented. Several classes were recognized for contributing to the fund. A committee of Maxey, Miss Kinney and James Hughes will head up the selection committee and recommend specific criteria for the scholarship. Classes, individuals and school organizations are encouraged to contribute to the scholarship, for which donations are tax-deductible. Kris Ockenfels, representing the Trenton R-9 School District, discussed the scheduled upcoming building projects, including a performing arts center,

Event Focusing On Service To Community Serve Trenton will again be helping those in need. Both volunteers and projects are being sought for the annual community event, which will be held on Sept. 28-29. Serve Trenton gives individuals the opportunity to come together and serve the community by taking on projects in which additional help is needed to complete. Emphasis is placed on projects that serve the elderly, orphans and impoverished. Persons having a project or who know of someone needing assistance are asked to go to the Serve Trenton Facebook page and complete a form, which can be submitted to the Facebook page or dropped off at the Trenton Fire Department, Shelter Insurance or

WRIGHT MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

Premier Eyecare Association as well as at any participating church. Volunteers are invited to help either one or both days. Volunteers should be at least 10 years of age, with youth being assigned to work in the same groups with their parents/guardians. In addition to helping with projects, volunteers are also needed for food preparation and child care. Volunteer forms are also available on the Facebook page and may be turned in to the same places listed above. The deadline to submit all forms is Friday, Sept. 13.

Participants will meet at C.F. Russell Stadium at 8 a.m. on both days, which will start with a time of worship prior to being disbursed to the various work sites. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to Trenton High School. This is the fourth year for the Serve Trenton effort. Last year, volunteers from the community worked on various community improvement projects, including yard clean-up, window repair, house painting, sidewalk replacement and walking dogs at the dog shelter. Plaque Dedicated At Memorial Wall

Ceremony Honors Long-Time Physician A plaque recognizing Trenton physician Dr. J.A. Keuhn and his wife, Chris was dedicated during ceremonies held on Friday afternoon, Aug. 30 at the site of the Wright Memorial Hospital Memorial Wall along the walking trail. Steve Schieber, CEO, Critical Access Region for the Saint Luke’s Health Systems, recognized the Keuhns for their contributions to the hospital. Dr. Keuhn recently retired after serving on the WMH medical staff since 1976. He has served on the hospital advisory board and both he and his wife have been members of the WMH Foundation Board as well. Schieber said Dr. Keuhn’s decision to come back to his hometown to practice medicine is an example of what the hospital means to the community. He thanked the WMH employees for their dedication in helping to make foundation projects a reality, in particular the walking trail, which both he and guest

speaker Matt Osterthun noted began with the efforts of employees who saw a need. “What makes the walking trail project so special is that it was the idea of the employees,” Osterthun said, adding that 196 employees gave over $26,000 as seed money to get the project started. “They set the tone and sent a message to the community about what a worthwhile project this was,” he said.

National Weather Service Clear skies and mild temperatures this week with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s and lows as low as 57. Trenton’s high on Thursday, Aug. 29 was 90, Friday’s high was 77, Saturday’s high was 76, Sunday’s high was 82 and Monday’s high was 85, the low was 61. A total of 1.91 inches of rain fell during that time period. Monday’s high at the Government Weather Station near Spickard was 82, the low was 68.

Osterthun, who was the first WMH  Foundation Director and currently serves as senior director of advancement for the University of Missouri College of Engineering, noted the walking trail was an intricate part of the project, giving people a chance to support the hospital by remembering a loved one. “Giving someone the chance to remember a loved one they have lost is

one of the most therapeutic and rewarding things a person can do and this project has been fortunate to benefit from the community’s generosity,” he said. Osterthun thanked the administration of Saint Luke’s Health System, Wright Memorial Hospital and Hedrick Medical Center for their support and endorsement of the project as well as

whelming night. “I think we came out and we played with some toughness,” Hixson said. “We played hard. I was really proud of them.” Hixson had the right to be positive on this night. Lathrop, after all, finished as the state runner-up at the Class 2 level last season. The Mules brought a number-four ranking in the state pre-season poll to Trenton with them and their head coach, Chris Holt, began his fifth year at the helm of the program. Trenton, by comparison, was playing its first game under Hixson, who brought in a new attitude along with a new offensive scheme. Bumps in the road were to be expected. Early on, it was rough. Lathrop took the opening possession, marched down the field and scored in under three minutes. Trenton churned out a first down on its opening drive before stalling and the ensuing punt attempt went awry as the ball was snapped over punter Tyler Siemer’s

head, setting the Mules up on Trenton’s 16. One play later, the Mules had a 14-0 edge. After a third Lathrop touchdown pushed the lead to 21-0, Trenton finally regrouped. The next several minutes were one of the highlights Hixson would point to after the game. Trenton forced a Lathrop fumble and a punt on the next two Mule possessions. With under two minutes until halftime, the lead was still just 21-0. “I was really proud of the fact that, once Lathrop got up on us 21-0, we didn’t sulk, we didn’t feel sorry for ourselves,” Hixson said. “(The players) just knew that the next play was going to be a really big play for us and we just have to keep the thing alive.” One more hiccup cost Trenton, however, and Lathrop tacked on a fourth score on a run of 50-plus yards. “That touchdown right before halftime, that was an effortless touchdown,” Hixson said. “I grabbed the defense during (Lathrop’s) last timeout

and I told them ‘they’re going to try to punch one more in before halftime, let’s keep them out of the end zone.’ They got to the edge and we had a couple of guys fall asleep and they scored on us.” The game was already pretty much decided at that point, but two more Lathrop scores in the third quarter really sealed the Bulldogs’ fate. Despite being down 42-0, Trenton kept working. Trenton would score twice in the final frame – albeit on Lathrop’s second unit – but the two touchdowns were big for Hixson and the program. “It was a huge confidence booster for us,” Hixson said of the late touchdowns. “We’re not where we want to be yet and that just gave us a good opportunity. We subbed a couple of young kids in, too, and that was good for our kids and for our program. I think us being able to move the ball a little bit built some confidence in us. So, we didn’t walk off the field with our tails between our legs.” Sam Schilling had Trenton’s first score, rushing in on an 11yard quarterback keeper. After Trenton forced its second turnover of the night, this one also coming on a Lathrop fumble, Canyon VonBurg scored

from three yards out on his first carry of the night. Jaren Whitney led the Bulldogs with 71 yards rushing on 16 carries – also a team high. Lathrop’s Tyler Paul led all rushers with 120 yards and three touchdowns, needing just five carries to reach those totals. Despite the lopsided loss, Trenton has its toughest opponent on the season now behind it. The Bulldogs shouldn’t see a team as stacked as the Mules again until a potential rematch or run-in with Maryville at the end of the year in district play. “That’s a state qualifying team with lots of talent and a lot of size,” Hixson said of Lathrop. “They are a lot bigger than they look on film. They were good-sized kids and I know Coach (Holt) does a great job with them over there. For us, I told the kids ‘that’s a state playoff team and hopefully we are going to keep getting better’.” Trenton now turns its attention to another district rival as the Bulldogs will venture onto their first road trip of the season this week, traveling to Lexington to take on the Minutemen. Kickoff at Gil Rector Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday.

Putnam County 4, Trenton 1

Trenton Drops GRC Opener Opening the season on the road against a conference opponent wasn’t ideal for the Trenton High School softball team. Doing so while trying to figure out how to replace five starters from last year’s state runner-up team didn’t help. For the first time since joining the Grand River Conference prior to the 2016 season, the Trenton Bulldogs were handed a conference loss as they fell 4-1 to the Putnam County Midgets on the road in Unionville on Monday night. “The credit needs to go to Putnam, Trenton Head Coach Joel Hultman said. “They are a really good program with a lot of upper classmen and a really good coaching staff. Trenton’s McKayla Blackburn was solid in the circle, despite giving up seven hits to the Midgets in her six innings

of work. Her defense faltered behind her, however, and three Trenton errors led to three unearned runs. “We gave them a couple of runs and that’s on us, Hultman said. “We need to clean up the things that we can control. To start out like that is not what you want, but it’s also not the end of the world. We need to learn from our mistakes and get better every single day. Blackburn finished the game with six strikeouts and two walks to go with the seven hits and lone earned run. At the plate, Gracyn Rongey made the most of her first career start, going two-for-three with the lone run scored of the game for Trenton. Jenna Reeter was one-for-two with the team’s only RBI and a hit by Lexi Whitaker rounded out what was only a four-hit game

for the Bulldogs. “You lose five girls and you are trying to fill those spots, Hultman said. “We have a lot of experienced girls who have played a lot of softball going back to when they were seven, eight years old. Playing varsity softball is a little bit different and it’s going to be new to anyone, though. You could kind of see the nerves in some of them tonight, but hopefully that’s over with and they realize that it is just softball. With the loss, Trenton established a 0-1 record both overall and within GRC play. Things don’t get any easier for Trenton as the Bulldogs host the defending Class 1 state champions in the Maysville Wolverines on Thursday at Griffin Field. The first pitch for the GRC battle is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

He also recognized past and present board members, who he noted “hold a significant responsibility to guide the foundation and shape what (projects) it supports.” “And thank you, present and past employees; look what you’ve done,” he said. “You’ve ignited an effort that will impact this hospital and community well into the future. This is a great example of when you support the hospital in a philanthropic or voluntary way, great things can happen for you and others.” Dave Bain, the current WMH Foundation Director, gave the welcome prior to the start of the program. Wright Memorial Hospital’s Senior Life Solutions program is working to raise suicide prevention and awareness with special events planned in September, which is National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month. A proclamation will be signed by Trenton Mayor Linda Crooks on Tuesday, Sept. 10, designating September as Suicide Prevention Month in Trenton. On that day, Senior Life Solutions will be hosting two walks on the hospital’s walking trail for community members and employees to join in on creating awareness for suicide prevention. The first walk will be held from 9 to 9:30 a.m., with the second planned from 3 to 3:30 p.m. Community members are also encouraged to wear teal, which is the national color used for suicide prevention and awareness. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, an average of 129 deaths by suicide occur per day and there are an estimated 1,400,000 suicide attempts per year. Senior Life Solutions is an intensive outpatient group therapy program designed to meet the unique needs of older adults suffering from symptoms of anxiety and depression often related to aging. Staff members are trained in the use of standardized, evidence-based tools for screening patients at risk of suicide. Staff can also assist patients in creating a plan to prevent future suicide attempts or suicidal thoughts. For more information, persons can call the Senior Life Solutions program at 660-357-4730.

Agent Helps Fight Hunger Cara McClellan was among American Family Insurance agents in Missouri who participated in a donation drive and food packaging event at this year’s Missouri State Fair. Seventy-eight donations totaling $11,825 were raised from American Family agents and staff, with the company’s Dreams Foundation providing a 1-to-1 matching gift to bring that total to $23,950. Over 700 FFA members, along with a group of volunteers that included Mrs. McClellan, packed 128,815 meals. Those meals are to be distributed among six large food banks in Missouri.

The Congressional Budget et Office ews when it served up a raft of bad news tions on Aug. updated its budget projections ecast that this 21. Annie, how do I stop being so judgmental about this? I know that he gets stressed out about food because thinking about nutrition and recipes is totally foreign to him, and my nagging only is causing him more stress. This is one of our biggest sources of conflict, but I can't seem to get over being "right" that his quality of life will improve when he improves the quality food he's consuming. -- Kitchen Confidential Dear Kitchen Confidential: It's no secret that eating healthy is an important part of life. Good nutrition is imperative for a long, happy and healthy life. Your childhood sounds very fortunate. Yet just as important as good nutrition are good relations filled with love, tolerance and understanding. Be grateful that your boyfriend is trying, and give him credit whenever he eats a healthy meal. We have too much stress these days, and stressing about healthy eating can be unhealthy. Remember building new positive habits takes time.

DOWN 1 Feels miserable 2 Credible

Dear Annie: My boyfriend, "Joseph," grew up in a lowerincome household in what we would now call a "food desert." Most meals were fast food, and his parents didn't really care about nutrition. They were just focused on getting something on the table, which I understand considering their circumstances. However, fastforward 20 years, and he is still gorging on a lot of the same stuff he had as a kid -- burgers, pizza, fried chicken, soda. I was raised in a house where the kitchen was the heart of the home, and vegetables were the lifeblood. Good meals meant good times with good friends where we felt good about what we were eating. Cooking healthy, delicious meals is important to me, and I'd like a partner who cares about this, too. Since moving to a bigger city with healthier options, his diet has improved a great deal, but I can't seem to just accept his choices around food, whether it's not drinking water, not eating enough veggies or not cooking at home often.

ear Annie

Be patient with him as he learns new eating habits. Try and remind him about how good it feels to feed your body and mind with healthy foods. Dear Annie: I am writing about thoughtfulness and help regarding illness or death in the family of friends. I have some suggestions because I have been in both situations. Well-meaning friends will say: "Let me know if I can help. Let me know if you would like a meal, a ride, grocery shopping, etc." Thoughtful friends will say: "I am bringing dinner over. What day and time would be best? I am going grocery shopping. Give me your list so I can do that for you. I will pick you up for your doctor's appointment. What day and time?" Most of the ill or bereaved are not going to ask for help. I hope that this is a wake-up call for the "well-meaning." -- Actions Speak Louder Than Words. Dear Actions Speak Louder Than Words: Thank you for taking the time to write, and let's hope that your suggestions will help people to do more and say less when it comes to helping out a friend in grief.

More debt: The August CBO predictions exceeded the May projections, pointing to higher deficits by the Trump administration.

2020 and staying above $1 trillion each year for the nex next decade. The CBO projects deficit deficits will total $12.2 trillion over the next deca decade. The main reaso reason for the deterioration? The budget a agreement the Trump administra administration reached with Congress this summ summer. It will add $1.7 trillion to the defic deficit over the next decade, althoug although part of that impact will be soften softened by CBO estimates of lower interest rates on the debt. T The amount of publicly held de debt relative to the size of the e economy will grow from 79% this year to 95% in 2029. That would put the debt at a higher level than at any time since World War II.
