BTC Bank Location

BTC Bank has made application to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation for approval to establish a branch facility at 1000 Oklahoma Ave. in Trenton. The 1000 Oklahoma Ave. address is the current address for KFC/Taco Bell. BTC President Doug Fish said it is hoped the new facility can be open in the next 30 to 35 days. He referred to the published address for the bank as a temporary location. In June, BTC Bank announced plans to locate a branch facility in Trenton with Trenton native Tom Witten as the Trenton Market President. At the time, Fish said the bank planned to look for an existing location to open within 90 days of its announcement, with a long-range plan of constructing a new building. According to a notice appearing in today’s RepublicanTimes, interested parties have until Thursday, Sept. 6 to make comment to the FDIC regional director about the branch establishment, with processing of comments being completed no earlier than the 15th day following either the date of the last required publication of the date of the receipt of application by the FDIC, whichever is later. The period may be extended for good cause by the regional director.

Committee Meetings

Donations, Reports Approved

AREA SCHOOL BOARDS

Princeton R-5, Newtown-Harris R-2

Donations were accepted and reports approved during meetings of the Princeton R-5 and Newtown-Harris R-2 boards of education held last week. Princeton R-5 The Princeton R-5 Board of Education held a special meeting on Monday, Aug. 13, accepting two monetary donations and taking action on several items. Gary and Kathy Thompson have donated $19,021.10 to help with costs involving the installation of a new football scoreboard at the Eddie Allen Field. The district purchased a used scoreboard last winter from the Waukee, IA school district for $500 and the Thompsons’ donation will be used to cover installation costs as well as placing a sign on the top of the

scoreboard, designating “Eddie Allen Field.” Volunteer labor and equipment will be used to put up the scoreboard and sign, saving the district around $7,000. A second donation of $1,000 was received from Pearl Scurlock. The money will be used to purchase an automatic external defibrillator for the Stacy Center. The district already has an AED in the elementary building and the second unit will now make one available in the junior/senior high building area. A bid for dairy products from Anderson Erickson was accepted. It was the lowest of two received and includes bids for milk, orange juice, cottage cheese and sour cream. No bids were received for bakery items.

The board approved the 2017-18 Annual Secretary of the Board Report, which will be submitted to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The report shows the district with an unrestricted fund balance at around 40 percent. An updated preschool handbook was approved as well as a change to the 201819 school calendar due to a typographical error. The final makeup day, if needed, will be on Tuesday, May 28. Following an executive session, Philip Todd was hired as a custodian. Nancy Gamet and Harlene Dougan were hired as part-time preschool paraprofessionals. Both women previously taught in the R-5 See Boards, Page 4

The Administrative and Utility committees of the Trenton City Council will meet tonight (Tuesday) at city hall. The Administrative Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Items on the announced agenda include a review of a proposal for the south airport hangar, a review of a revised pool ordinance, a review of the current trash contract and discussion of a part-time nuisance officer. The Utility Committee will meet at 7 p.m. The utility director will give a report and the committee will also discuss the TMU “black start” project.

City Brush Dump Moved

The City of Trenton has moved its brush dump to property it owns on NW 27th Street, just west of the Trap and Skeet Range. The brush dump will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Persons with questions may contact the city street department at 359-6323.

Preservation Committee

Due to a lack of a quorum being available, the Trenton Historic Preservation Committee has postponed its meeting planned for Thursday, Aug. 23. The meeting will be rescheduled at a later date.

Crowder Park Information

Information about Crowder State Park will be shared by staff during a public meeting on Saturday, Aug. 25 at the campground amphitheater. The meeting will be from 7 to 8 p.m., with updates given about current and future plans for the park. Those attending will also be able to make comments. A “spider sniff” will take place following the meeting, beginning at 8:30 p.m. at the amphitheater. Staff will present information about spiders found in Missouri, followed by a short hike. Those attending should wear closed-toe shoes and insect repellant as well as bring a flashlight.

NCMC Tax Rate Hearing

North Central Missouri College will hold its tax rate hearing prior to its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 28. The hearing will be at 5:25 p.m. in the Frey Administrative Center, with the board meeting to follow at 5:30 p.m. NCMC is proposing a tax levy of 38.55 cents on the $100 assessed valuation, which is slightly higher than a year ago due to a decrease in the college district’s assessment. The proposed tax rate is estimated to generate $333,500.

KCP&L Rate Increase

The Missouri Public Service Commission has approved a request to change the fuel adjustment charge on its electric customers’ monthly bills. The change, filed by Kansas City Power and Light’s Great Missouri Operations Company, reflects the cost to purchase fuel and power from December 2017 to May 2018 as well as the company’s fuel adjustment charge true-up. With the PSC approval, a residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month will see a monthly increase of around $1.14 to $2.40 a month. The change will take effect on Sept. 1. Among area counties affected are Grundy, Daviess, Mercer, Harrison and Livingston.

National Weather Service

Mostly sunny and mild this week with highs in the low to mid 80s and lows in the 60s. The high on Friday at the Government Weather Station at Trenton was 86, Saturday’s high was 90 and Sunday’s high was 86. Sunday’s low was 67 with .81 of an inch of rain recorded. Trenton Softball Team Dominates Jamboree

The Trenton High School softball team is ready. That much and more could be garnered from the team’s performance at a jamboree at Schuyler County on Saturday. Trenton defeated Putnam County 6-0, Schuyler County 7-0 and Brookfield 2-0, shutting out all three opponents in three-inning sessions. Trenton’s pitchers dominated, allowing just four baserunners in the nine innings played on the day. McKayla Blackburn threw the Putnam session and fired two frames against Brookfield. She allowed three hits and struck out five in five innings. Ainsley Tolson threw the first inning

against Brookfield and the Schuyler County session, striking out six and allowing one hit in four innings. At the plate, Maci Moore and Taylor Richman each had three hits on the day and each drove in three runs as well. Sidney Lynch added three hits for Trenton also. The Bulldogs will look to build off the momentum of the jamboree showing this coming weekend at the Cameron Tournament. Trenton will face Savannah at noon on Friday in pool play and also takes on DeKalb in pool play on Friday at 4:45. Bracket play is slated to begin on Saturday at 8 a.m.

SPORTS

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

The purpose of the jamboree in high school football is simple. It lets coaches and players alike see what areas need work before games begin to matter the following week. It is designed to expose flaws at a time when ineptitude is not punished. For Trenton, the Bulldogs probably wish the jamboree hadn’t exposed quite as much. Trenton traveled to Knob Noster this past Friday night, falling three times in sessions against the host Panthers, Windsor Academy and Summit Christian Academy. The Bulldogs yielded two touchdowns each to Knob Noster and Windsor and gave up three to Summit Christian. Trenton’s offense, meanwhile, netted just two scores - one from Jadan Whitney and the other on the legs of Mark Trump. The rugged showing on the scoreboard wasn’t what Trenton was concerned with, however. “With a jamboree, what I look for, is how well did we do in the fundamentals,” Trenton Head Coach Brandon Boswell said. “Were we explosive off the ball? What was our shoulder level off the ball? Were we lining up correctly? How was our intensity? Were we very physical? You know, those are the type of things I look for. I don’t think you can worry about how much you scored or didn’t

score. I think we did some good and some bad. If I were to give us a rating it would be average - in that C range.” Trenton dropped the opening session to Knob Noster two scores to none. It was session two where the Bulldogs had their best showing. Trenton would fall two scores to one, however, the Bulldogs got the ball to the one yard line on their last play of the session, setting up what should have been an easy score in a traditional game setting. The night ended with a loss to Summit Christian, which scored three times to the Bulldogs’ one. The final two scores from Summit Christian came on Trenton’s junior varsity, however. “There are a lot of things that we need to get better at,” Boswell said. “I didn’t think we tackled very well. I thought our intensity at times was really good, though, and I thought our explosiveness off the ball offensively was really good. Against Windsor and Summit Christian I thought we ran the ball really well, so there were a lot of positives there.” Trenton was without Carson Radcliff its leading rusher a year ago - who was nursing a hamstring injury. The loss didn’t hurt the Bulldogs so much on the offensive side of the ball as Mark Trump had an impressive performance, scoring his touchdown in the second session against Windsor on a 10-yard run. But in the secondary, Radcliff’s absence at cornerback

build on a strong finish from a year ago. Lock threw for a Southeastern Conference-record 44 touchdowns last season, and he is a regular on seemingly every preseason award list for quarterbacks this year. The senior will lead an offense that scored 40 or more points in each of its last six regular-season games in 2017, helping the Tigers rebound from a 1-5 start to finish 7-6. It's an offense now led by former Tennessee coach and Dallas Cowboys Derek Dooley, who has never worked as an offensive coordinator. Missouri also has a new de-

was a bit noticeable. Windsor and Summit Christian both had touchdown passes on Trenton’s first-team defense. Christian also popped the Trenton back-ups for touchdown passes for its final two scores. The jamboree marked Trenton’s return to preseason play after the Bulldogs skipped the event last year in favor of an intrasquad scrimmage. Prior to that Trenton competed with Maysville and South Harrison in jamboree play each year. But with Trenton coming into the Grand River Conference two years ago, it became hard to use the jamboree for its intended purpose without tipping its hand against two conference-mates. In Knob Noster, Windsor and Summit Christian, Trenton saw three teams it will not cross at any time during the upcoming season. The Bulldogs will have their hands full on Friday as they open the season with a trip to Lathrop, which is coming into the season as a frontrunner in the KCI Conference. The Mules looked very impressive in their jamboree, scoring on four of its first five plays against Class 3 Mexico. Lathrop has handed Trenton season-opening losses in each of the past two seasons and holds three victories in four meetings with Trenton in that span. Kickoff on Friday night in Lathrop is set for 7 o’clock.

Knob Noster Jamboree

Plenty To Work On Following Jamboree

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — When former Missouri offensive coordinator Josh Heupel left to become the head coach at Central Florida last year, it meant that Tigers quarterback Drew Lock would play his senior season with a third offensive coordinator in four years. "I was like, wow, this is going to be another huge transition," Lock said. Even with the coaching change, Lock decided in April to return to Missouri — where he is considered nothing short of a Heisman Trophy hopeful entering this season for a Tigers team that expects to

fensive coordinator after DeMontie Cross was fired after two games a year ago. Tigers coach Barry Odom stayed inhouse for his new defensive coordinator, former safeties and secondary coach Ryan Walters. Walters coached with Odom at Memphis and will go into his fourth year at Missouri. He rounds out a fresh coaching staff that Odom seems to appreciate more than his previous crews. "The staff harmony is better than it's been since I've been here," Odom said. "I like their approach. The good thing is they're not a bunch of yes guys. I open it up to conversation, and I want them to talk to me." GOOD COMPANY Lock will also be joined by many familiar faces on offense, including all five offensive line starters and running backs Damarea Crockett and Larry Rountree III. Crockett averaged six yards per carry before a shoulder injury ended his season in Week 6, and Rountree rushed for 703 yards

and six touchdowns on 126 carries last season. Lock's options in the passing game include deep threat Emanual Hall and speedy Jonathon Johnson, who combined for 1, 541 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2017. TOUCHDOWN TARGET Lock can also rely on breakout tight end Albert Okwuegbunam, who led FBS tight ends with 11 touchdowns last year. Okwuegbunam was a redshirt freshman last season and exploded when he got his chance to perform. "He's the total package," tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley said about Okwuegbunam. "You don't get a lot of tight ends in the league that like to block and are good at it and can still go run routes and make catches." TIME TO SHINE As Florida and Tennessee start new head-coaching eras, Missouri has a legitimate shot to finish second in the SEC East after being just one year removed from a 4-8 season. Division rival Georgia is the favorite. SEASON OPENER Missouri opens its season with back-to-back home games, beginning with Tennessee-Martin on Sept. 1 before hosting Wyoming on Sept. 8. The Tigers play three of their first four games at home. KEY GAMES In addition to its usual SEC East opponents, Missouri travels to face defending national champion Alabama on Oct. 13. The Tigers' second West opponent is Arkansas in Columbia to close out the regular season on Nov. 23.

Laredo Fire District Grant

The Laredo Fire Protection District is the recipient of a $2,500 grant from the “America’s Farmers Grow Communities” program on behalf of Grundy County farmer Casey Bowe. The grant funds are provided by the Monsanto Fund, which partners with farmers to

make a positive impact in farm communities across the country by supporting local nonprofit organizations. The program has been in existence since 2010 and has directed more than $29 million to organizations across rural Missouri.

The Laredo Board of Aldermen met on Monday, Aug. 13 to set the 2018 tax rate. A public hearing was held before members approved the levy of $1 on the $100 assessed valuation. The rate is slightly higher than last year’s levy of 99.12 cents, due to a

decrease in the city’s assessed valuation. According to City Clerk Ashley Campbell, 30 cents of the levy is for the street fund and 70 cents is for general revenue. The next meeting of the board will be at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 10.

The Galt Board of Aldermen met on Aug. 14, approving its 2018 levy. City Clerk Ashley Campbell set the levy at 94.91 cents on the $100 assessed valuation, which is two cents higher than a year ago, with the rate was 92.91 cents. The board approved a threeyear contract with WCA Waste Corporation for trash

service. WCA is the current provider. The customer rate was raised to $13.50 per month, which is an increase of 50 cents, effective on Oct. 1. WCA will provide all customers with a 95-gallon waste cart, which will be delivered soon. Carts had previously not been provided. The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

Jeff Crowley spoke to members of the Trenton Rotary Club about his business, Serve Link Home Care, when the club met on Thursday, Aug. 16 at the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall. Crowley said Serve Link, which was formerly known as Services for Older Americans, is celebrating its 45th anniversary in Trenton, having been established in 1973 as part of a statewide effort to provide health services to rural areas. Crowley has been with Serve Link since 1995. The business offers a wide array of direct services, including home health, in-home care and Lifeline and has 84 employees, including over 60 home care aides who work throughout the nine-county Green  Hills area. Direct home health and inhome nursing care is provided by Serve Link registered nurses in Grundy, Daviess, Linn, Livingston, Chariton and Macon counties while the company also works with health departments in Mercer, Putnam, Sullivan and Caldwell counties to provide nursing care in those areas. There are also over 280 persons who use the Serve Link Lifeline serv-

ice. Serve Link will be holding an anniversary celebration on Thursday, Sept. 13 in recognition of its 45 years in business. During the business meeting, tickets were distributed for the annual Rotary Fish Fry, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Rock Barn. Serving will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. and will include musical entertainment along with free prizes and a silent auction. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children under the age of 12 and can be obtained by contacting any Rotary member. Missouri Day Parade Committee members Steve Taylor and Savannah Summers displayed the new Rotary flags the club has purchased. The flags, which will be placed on the Ninth Street Bridge, will be flown on various holidays as well as during the Missouri Day Festival. Parade Chairman Brian Upton said that nominations for grand marshal are still being accepted, with the committee to meet on Aug. 29 to review those suggestions. The theme of this year’s parade is “Hometown Heritage.” The club will meet again on Aug. 23.

Area Reservior Project Funded

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will be investing $20 million in the East Locust Creek Reservoir project in Sullivan County, according to an announcement made Tuesday by the office of U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt. The resources will be used to prepare the dam’s site, access corridors and other key infrastructure to allow the next phase of construction to begin. The East Locust Creek Reservoir service area includes Sullivan, Putnam, Grundy, Mercer, Schuyler, Adair, Livingston, Linn, Macon and Chariton counties. “North central Missouri’s water shortage is increasing costs, worsening drought conditions and disrupting the lives of farmers, businesses and families in the community,” Blunt said. “These communities have waited too long for a solution to the regional water

shortage, and I’m pleased this investment will expedite the completion of this critical infrastructure project. I’m proud to support the USDA’s Watershed and Flood Prevention Operations Program and I’ll continue working with federal, state and local officials to ensure this project is completed as soon as possible.” “The incredible news of the $20 million for construction comes at a time when we could use some good news as we battle this drought and a potential water shortage,” said Harve Rhodes, chairman of the North Central Missouri Regional Water Commission. “We are grateful ' that the Natural Resources Conservation Service approved our application and we remain grateful for Sen. Blunt’s continued advocacy for this desperately needed reservoir. This is extraordinary news.”

Woman Posts Cash Bond

A Spickard woman has posted bond after being arrested for failing to appear in court or pay. According to the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, 39year-old Amanda Keithley

failed to appear in court or pay on an original charge of tampering, a class A misdemeanor. She has posted $200 cash-only bond and has been given a court date of Aug. 28.

The Trenton Police Department investigated two accidents recently, including one on Lulu Street on Friday, Aug. 17. According to Officer Mike Wilson’s accident report, the mishap occurred when a car driven by Misty Riddle of Trenton was backing from a driveway at 2113 Lulu St., and failed to see a parked car owned by Martha J. Thrun of Trenton, which was parked and unoccupied. There was minor damage to the rear of Ms. Riddle’s car, with moderate damage to the driver’s side

of Ms. Thrun’s vehicle. No tickets were issued in the mishap. Officer Luke Dapra investigated an accident Sunday, Aug. 19 near the intersection of Seventh and Grant streets, where a car driven by Barbara J. Vandevender of Spickard was eastbound on Seventh Street and made an improper turn onto Grant Street, striking a car driven by Tommy J. Brittain of Trenton. Brittain’s car was stopped at the stop sign on Grant Street when it was struck, causing both vehicles to sustain minor damage.

The Trenton Lions Club met on Tuesday, Aug. 14, in the First Christian Church Family Activity Center with three guests present. Jim Cox, acting president, led the pledge to the U.S. flag followed by a prayer by Rev. Steve Martin. Jim Cox also served as “tail twister.” Larry Dannar, program chairman, introduced Tammie Spencer, who presented information on the rehabilitation department at Wright Memorial Hospital. Services offered at the hospital include cardiac rehabilitation, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. Mrs. Spencer

also explained the swing bed program, which is available as a result of the hospital’s critical care facility designation. Bethani Kottman introduced club members to her daughter, Rylan Miller, and provided an update on the ongoing treatment of Rylan’s vision condition. The Trenton Lions Club is looking into acquiring a “leader dog” for Rylan through the Michigan Lions Club Leader Dog Program. The next meeting of Trenton Lions Club will be at noon on Tuesday, Aug.21. Lannie Harkins will be program chairman.

SUPPORTING TRANSPORTATION FUNDING FOR OUR SCHOOL DISTRICTS

School districts have an inordinate responsibility in getting our children where they need to be, safe and on time. However, funding school bus routes isn’t cheap. Often, districts are forced by law to allocate state money to one area when it would be better served funding something else. If we allow individual districts more leeway in determining how to dispese their own funding, within rea-

sonable boundaries, we can make sure that our taxpayer dollars are being used in a more efficient manner amenable to the specific concerns of disparate localities. A new law, passed by the General Assembly and signed by the governor, will help accomplish this goal. Senate Bill 687 allows a school district to use a portion of the money previously appropriated to a dis-

trict’s professional development committee for school transportation if certain conditions are met. The district must have a pressing need for additional transportation funding, determined by the percentage of the transportation’s allowable cost, per the school foundation formula, the state government is then providing. If the state is appropriating less than 25 percent of the allowable cost of student transportation in a certain district, the school board of that district may vote to allow up to half of the state funds designated for the professional development committee to be used for transportation funding, instead. I believe SB 687 is a sensible step in the right direction. Transportation is an inescapable expense for any school district,

not least of which are those in rural northwest Missouri, which often cover miles upon miles of territory. By altering the process to give local districts more freedom in designing their own budgets, we’re making better use of taxpayer funds. I wish all our students and teachers the best of success in the new school year. As always, please feel free to call, email or write with your ideas or concerns. Colleges Want Share Of Betting Funds

BUSINESS

TRENTON REPUBLICAN-TIMES, DAILY, TRENTON, MO.

By The Associated Press Concerned that expanded sports gambling will bring additional costs for ensuring their games are on the up-andup, college athletic departments are looking for a way to get a piece of the action. A U.S. Supreme Court decision in May allowed states across the country to join Nevada in having legalized sports betting. Since then, sports books have opened in Delaware, Mississippi and New Jersey. A West Virginia casino is set to take bets within two weeks, with other states not far behind. Schools in states where legal wagering has started or soon will are considering joining professional sports leagues in pursuing legislation requiring sports book operators to pay them a cut of the amount wagered on their games. College officials say the "integrity fees" would help fund beefedup programs educating athletes about unscrupulous activities associated with gambling and monitoring betting lines for possible game fixing or point shaving. The American Gaming Association, which lobbies on behalf of the gambling industry, opposes integrity fees because they would be piled on top of state and federal taxes that cut into profit margins. Also, the AGA says, the pressure of paying integrity fees would result in operators offering less attractive odds than a bettor could get from an illegal bookmaker.

Google Following You – Whether You Like It Or Not

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google wants to know where you go so badly that it records your movements even when you explicitly tell it not to. An Associated Press investigation found that many Google services on Android devices and iPhones store your location data even if you've used a privacy setting that says it will prevent Google from doing so.

Computer-science researchers at Princeton confirmed these findings at the AP's request. For the most part, Google is upfront about asking permission to use your location information. An app like Google Maps will remind you to allow access to location if you use it for navigating. If you agree to let it record your location over time, Google Maps will display that history

for you in a "timeline" that maps out your daily movements. Storing your minute-by-minute travels carries privacy risks and has been used by police to determine the location of suspects — such as a warrant that police in Raleigh, North Carolina, served on Google last year to find devices near a murder scene. So the company will let you "pause" a setting called Location History.

Google says that will prevent the company from remembering where you've been. Google's support page on the subject states: "You can turn off Location History at any time. With Location History off, the places you go are no longer stored." That isn't true. Even with Location History paused, some Google apps automatically store time-stamped location data without asking.

For example, Google stores a snapshot of where you are when you merely open its Maps app. Automatic daily weather updates on Android phones pinpoint roughly where you are. And some searches that have nothing to do with location, like "chocolate chip cookies," or "kids science kits," pinpoint your precise latitude and longitude and save it to your Google account.

Dear Annie: I have been trying to decipher my recent bad feelings toward a friend who is much wealthier than I am. We have known each other for a decade. Whereas she has been married to the same man for over 30 years, I was usually a single mother. Our daughters are about the same age, and we have the same jobs and make the same income. We also were both raised in abusive homes. Here the commonality ends. I have been poor all my life and have priorities besides money and bank accounts. She has a husband who makes engineering wages, and they go on vacation every year. When she returns, she plasters the atmosphere in front of my face with photos of her latest excursion, and to be honest, I cannot relate and could not care less. I don't flash photos of burgers in front of a homeless person to show what I had for lunch, which is what I liken her actions to. She has also begun rattling on incessantly about her savings bonds and commenting on how old my car is, which we have to take whenever we go out to save hers.

My question is: Am I merely jealous, or is there something to how I feel? I feel violated by her insensitivity. -- Less Than Dear Less Than: A friend doesn't boast about how great her financial situation is while mocking the condition of your car. At the same time, a friend usually wants to see fun photos of a nice family vacation. Sharing those photos and waving a hamburger in front of a homeless person are two very different things. Considering that you couldn't care less about her photos and she is making rude comments about your car, this does not sound like a friendship at all. But the fact that you are writing to me leads me to believe that you really like her. Instead of bottling everything in, why not tell your friend how you feel? Remember, you are not "less than." Tell your friend this is how you feel with her at times, and if she responds helpfully, all will be good. If not, you need to find a new friend. Dear Annie: I was heartbroken to read the letter to you from "Still Suffering," the woman who, because of financial hardships and health prob-

lems, moved back in with her parents, who abused her when she was a child. I can only imagine how painful and challenging her situation must be. I am disappointed that you did not direct her to contact women's resource services in her area. Many areas have services and counseling for women in abusive relationships -- at no cost. Though she is not in an abusive romantic relationship, the situation isn't very different, and one of these agencies might be able to help. Please let her know there are people who are sending her love. -- Supportive in Sarasota Dear Supportive: Thank you for your wise suggestion. Advocates at The National Domestic Violence Hotline can help refer abuse survivors to resources in their area. I encourage anyone in such a position to call. The number is 800-799-7233.

Decision time for Ford Although Ford Motor Co. has said a $7 billion revamp is under way, a lack of specifics has perplexed analysts and sent the stock tumbling. After peaking this year at $13.23 in January, shares have fallen to around $9.50 as Wall Street’s impatience surfaced. “We’re worried Ford does not have a good handle on either the operational or strategic levers of the global business,” Barclays analyst Brian Johnson wrote to investors after the July 25 second-quarter earnings release. Ford reported a 48 percent drop in net income, cut earnings guidance and canceled its annual $15

presentation for investors in September. Shares kept dropping after an Aug. 8 presentation by product development chief Hau Thai-Tang. He said Ford plans to dump most car models and shift capital spending to profitable trucks and SUVs. Ford expects a 3 percent overall cost reduction in each of the next five years. About 80 percent would come from $12 billion in material cost savings, $7 billion in product development and engineering efficiency and $1 billion from manufacturing, he said. CEO Jim Hackett promised specifics as steps are taken, and Johnson wrote that the second-quarter results “finally forced some decisions.”
