11 Receive Diplomas During Saturday Ceremony

Urich, Williams Are Top Students Robert Urich was recognized as the valedictorian of the Grundy R-5 Class of 2020 during ceremonies on Saturday afternoon in the high school gym at Galt. Urich finished his high school career with a grade point average of 4.159 on a 4.0 scale. Salutatorian of the class was Tanner Williams, who had a GPA of 4.075. Urich told his classmates that while this was an unusual year, with their senior year being cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, only a few things would really change for them. “We will still learn, whether it be from experience or further education. We will still work at our jobs, just with longer hours. There will still be basketball games to attend, only we will not be playing,” he said. “What really changes is not seeing your old friends every week and growing apart. We’ll each go our separate ways, down different walks of life.” He recognized each of his classmates and the special memories he had of each one. Williams noted that while many activities that make a senior year special did not occur, it didn’t take away from all the hard work he and his classmates put in to get to their graduation day. “I believe there were a lot of things our class was looking forward to that did not work out for us,” he said. “I could go on and on about how our senior year was ‘ruined,’ but I rather like to think that as a class we were blessed.” Williams mentioned the support provided by the many teachers, coaches and parents/guardians, whom he said helped develop the graduates “into good people, ready to go out into the world and show what we are made of.” He concluded by telling his classmates to count their blessings. “It’s the little things,” he said. “Accentuate the positives, eliminate the negatives, latch on to the affirmative

Back To School Event Set For Aug. 13 The third annual Bright Futures Trenton Back to School Event is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 13, with officials announcing several changes being made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as efforts to assist students in the small Grundy County school districts. In the past, the event has focused on the needs of students served by the Trenton R-9 School District. However, because of struggles families may possibly be facing due to the pandemic, Bright Futures Trenton has reached out to the Laredo R-7, Spickard R-2, Pleasant View R-6 and Grundy R-5 school districts for participation in this year’s activities. All students who attend school in Grundy County and who need assistance through the goods and services offered at the event are invited to participate. Bright Futures co-coordinator Terri Critten noted that

Board OKs Deficit Budget

www.republican-times.com

The Trenton R-9 School District anticipates spending at a deficit next year, although the actual difference between estimated expenditures and revenues at this time could fluctuate as soon as next week. The 2020-21 budget approved on Friday by the board of education shows anticipated revenues of $12,413,807 while expenditures are listed at $16,751,003. However, $4,344,500 of the expenditures listed are for costs associated with the construction project, which is being paid for by bond revenues the district received last year and are not included in the new budget. This makes the actual anticipated deficit $277,607, leaving the district with a 2020-21 year-end fund balance of $2,948,831, or around 25.04 percent. Superintendent Mike Stegman said that the district could be receiving some additional state monies prior to the end of the current school year (June 30). If those are received, those revenues would push the anticipated year-end fund balance for 2020-21 to $3,228,820 or 27.41 percent. With either scenario, Stegman said he felt the district was still in good financial shape, given all the uncertainties schools will be facing in the coming year. The state has already withheld some funding due to the COVID-19 pandemic (Trenton’s withhold was $227,762) and more reductions in state funding may or may not come in the future. Stegman said he used “very conservative” numbers in putting together the new budget, figuring Average Daily Attendance revenues in several categories at less than what the state has recommended. He said the district did receive CARES Act funding money to help pay for costs associated with the shutdown of the school due to COVID19. Those funds helped the district end 2019-20 with a fund balance of around 29.77 percent. Stegman said he will continue to watch finances closely as the district moves forward into the new school year. “Right now, the numbers look great,” Stegman said. “But we don’t know what is going to happen down the road.” In related matters, the board also approved the 2019-20 end-of-year bills and actualization of revenues and expenditures for the year. Approval was given to a See R-9, Page 8

Patriots Sign Former MVP Cam Newton Ex-Panther Will Replace Brady In New England BOSTON (AP) — The New England Patriots have reached an agreement with free-agent quarterback Cam Newton, bringing in the 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player to help the team move on from three-time MVP Tom Brady, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The one-year deal is worth up to $7.5 million with incentives, the person said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it publicly. A Patriots spokesman said the team had nothing to announce Sunday. “I’m as excited as I don’t

what right now!!" Newton posted on Instagram. “All praise to God!! Dropping content tomorrow!! I hope you’re ready!! Let’sgoPats. The Patriots had been heading to training camp with 2019 fourth-round draft choice Jarrett Stidham as the heir apparent to Brady, who signed with Tampa Bay this offseason. Stidham appeared in three games last season, completing two passes for 14 yards with one interception. The only other experienced quarterback on the Patriots' roster was 34-year-old Brian Hoyer, who has started 38 games in an 11-year career with seven NFL teams, including the Patriots twice. A three-time Pro Bowl selection who was the league's MVP in 2015, Newton remains the NFL’s all-time leader in touchdowns rushing by a quarterback.

MLB Teams Set To Dive Right In Majors Confronting Short Time Period Before Opening Day

CHICAGO (AP) — Forget about those halcyon first few days of spring training, when arranging for the right tee time on the right golf course is often more challenging than the work on the field. When major leaguers report next week for spring training 2.0 — or perhaps more accurately, baseball's first summer camp — time will be one precious commodity with about three weeks to go before opening day. “We're going to have some live batting practices the first day they show up. Day 1 and Day 2. ... Multiple ups for the starters," Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said Friday on a video conference call. “These guys are prepared for that. They've been hungry for it. All across the majors, the race is on to set up travel plans and work out the final details for training ahead of an unforgiving season of just 60 games. After intake coronavirus tests and a mandatory quarantine period while awaiting results, fullsquad workouts likely will begin next weekend. The regular season starts July 23 and 24, leaving a short period for players to prepare and a tricky balance for managers trying to get their teams ready while also worrying about potential health issues that could pop up with more frequency during a truncated training period. “I think that the biggest issue is going to be just the buildup, White Sox catcher James McCann said. "I honestly think that everyone’s done everything they possibly can to stay in shape, from pitchers throwing and hitters hitting. But there’s only so many swings in a cage and so many, you know, non-adrenaline bullpens you can throw. “There’s a reason why we have six weeks of spring training, in a typical spring training. There is particular concern for starting pitchers, who take great care in building up their arms over an extended period. That's one reason why active rosters will be 30 players during the first two weeks of the season, 28 during the second two

weeks and 26 after that. Brewers manager Craig Counsell said they could begin the year with as many as 17 pitchers. “We have a bunch of guys that are much further along than I anticipated," Counsell said. “So, I’m not as concerned about that as I would have originally thought when we departed in mid-March. They’ve all been throwing on a regular schedule. They’ve all been throwing to hitters. Now, the challenge when we ramp up intensity, what does recovery look like? That’s probably the thing I’ll think about the most. While spring training was suspended March 12, players haven't exactly been sitting around this whole time. McCann worked out in former Cubs utilityman Ben Zobrist's barn in Tennessee. White Sox ace Lucas Giolito said he has been facing hitters in Northern California, everyone from high school prospects to minor leaguers. “On a pretty much weekly basis, I’m getting a couple bullpens in, a live bullpen facing hitters out here in Sacramento, he said. “And I’m right now at like a up-anddown three times kind of shape I guess you could say, where I’m simulating three innings, even extending the innings out sometimes just to get the pitch count up. Beyond injury and coronavirus concerns, space is also an issue for baseball's summer camp. While spring training facilities in Florida and Arizona have sev-

eral backfields that players can use, teams are going to have to make the most of their home ballparks and a handful of area facilities. That means staggered start times for player workouts and extended days for coaching staffs. It also means meetings in airy stadium concourses instead of cramped clubhouses so players can observe social distancing guidelines designed to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. “It’s basically just using all parts of the facility very wisely and efficiently and I think with the initial plan that we have, it functions like that, Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. “The one thing for the staff portion of it, it’s going to be a longer day because we are dealing with one field and you’re talking about live BPs and getting guys ready. We’re going to have to be very efficient. Some places are better suited for the task than others. Domed stadiums will give their teams more reliability for their schedules. The Diamondbacks are going to use Chase Field and their spring training facility in Scottsdale, just a short drive away from their home ballpark. “It just creates a little bit longer day, Counsell said. “We’ll get all the work done that we need to get done. Intra-squad games are going to be a big part of this. We’ll use both clubhouses. The space is fine, but one field just kind of lengthens the day, I think.

Memorials may be made to the Jamesport Lions Club and/or the Jamesport Baptist Church in care of Roberson Funeral Home, 503 S. Broadway, Jamesport, MO 64648. Mr. Trimble was born and raised in Jamesport, the son of Ray and Eva Thompson Trimble. Jim attended William Jewell College and then went on to graduate from Kansas University in 1958. He was an avid KU basketball fan. He raised every one of his five kids to play on basketball teams as well as other sports. They all followed in his footsteps – big shoes for sure. Jim worked for Reed Seeds, Inc. for 42 years, first in his hometown of Jamesport and later in Chillicothe before he retired in December 2000. Jim kept very busy in retirement, continuing to raise and take care of his big family. He raised a beautiful, extensive

garden every year including this year. It was his pride and joy to share with all his kids. Jim was an active member of the Lions Club and the Jamesport Baptist Church. Jim did lots of babysitting, dogsitting, housesitting and ballgame watching. He always had a four-legged companion. Bo was his first true dog love and then his girl, Freckles. Sage, one of his granddogs, was also one of his girls and a devoted companion. Jim always looked forward to any and all family gatherings. He was devoted to Betty and all his kids were devoted to him. He was the most loved Dad on earth. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Waterbury Trimble, of the home; five children and their spouses, Kathy (Jon) Rosenboom, Karen (Don) Fields, Kim (Kevin) Edwards, Kristin (David) Crow and Jimmy (Julie) Trimble; 10 grandchildren, Robert, Courtney, Shana, McKenzi, Clayton, Bella, Maggie, Max, Stephen and Mark; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Dear Annie: I recently read the letter from A Better Man Today, who was concerned about people reading his personal diary, particularly about his "dark times." I agree with your answer but would like to add one more idea. Create a "burn box" and entrust it to someone who will not open it or divulge its contents but will see that it is destroyed upon your death or at your request. I read about this once upon a time and apologize for not recalling the origin. I suspect it was from the military. I shared this idea with a very dear friend of mine years ago because she also journaled and was concerned about how her children might react to her words and deepest feelings. She created her burn box, sealed it and left instructions that it was to be given to me. I understood that once I received it, I was to burn it.

She may have cleaned it out and destroyed the contents already. I don't know and don't need to know at this point. But this may be another way for A Better Man Today to have some peace of mind about his most personal, deepest thoughts. -- Burn Box Dear Burn Box: What a clever idea. Thank you for your suggestion. Dear Annie: I resisted responding to the first letter you received in regard to eliminating mice, but after reading another on that subject this morning, I decided to add my experience. When I lived in my previous house, I would get a mouse visitor every so often, so I set out a cage trap. I was delighted to discover that each one I caught had a facial expression and personality all its own. For example, one looked at me with great irritation, and I could almost hear it thinking, "You've got some 26,640

With a shortage of new housing throughout most of the country, “most homeowners ... are thinking about improving the appearance of an aging house,” according to Kenneth Leon, global director of equity research at CFRA Research. “We are in the early innings of a secular shift” as families seek safe shelters such as a home,
