Annual Meeting
Individuals, Businesses Recognized Members of the Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated the past year during the organization’s annual meeting on Friday night held at the Ketcham Community Center on the North Central Missouri College campus. The event, which was attended by over 250 individuals, opened with a welcome by Chamber Board President Cale Gondringer and Chamber Executive Director Debbie Carman, who also gave a year-in-review report. Ms. Carman said she hopes to soon be able to announce a new location for the chamber and license bureau, which was destroyed by a fire in February. Gondringer also introduced members of the chamber board, who include Marshall Austin, Kathi Brewer, Chuck Jones, Dr. Lenny Klaver, Dr. Andy Cox, Micah Landes, Amy Lewis, Bob Pippen, Phillip Ray, Jackie Soptic, Ron Urton, Kim Washburn, Tara Walker, Dan Wiebers and Donita Youtsey. Joe Brinser, a member of the Trenton Ambassadors, introduced other members who include Rachel Arnold, Chad Boyd, Sharon Barnett, Stephanie Burnfin, Robin
Chambers, Megan Derry, Linda Eads, Amy Franklin, Ali Gray, Jeanie Griffin, Sue Huffstutter, Laura Kimble, Marlisa Klinginsmith, Diane Lowrey, Bonita Price, Melissa Purkapile, Lindsey Stevens, Jeb Walker, Joy Wright and student ambassador Cole Soptic. The 2018 Pillars of the Community were R.W. Keuhn and Phil Schlarb, Keuhn, who owned and operated the Gift Nook along with his wife, Twyla, expressed his appreciation to the community for their support of his business and allowing his family to given back. Schlarb, who was both an instructor and administrator at NCMC, talked about efforts to restart a fine arts program in the community and encouraged those in attendance to help with this effort. The Green Hills Recreation Association received the award as the Organization of the Year. Speaking on behalf of the GHRA, Taya Ray thanked the community for its support in making the organization a success. GHRA is starting its third year of offering youth recreation opportunities. Board Offers Contract
Bailey Named New THS Principal Kasey Bailey will be the Trenton High School principal for the 2019-2020 school year. Bailey, who is currently serving as assistant principal for both THS and Trenton Middle School, will assume his new duties on Aug. 1. He was named to his new position by the board of education during a meeting on Friday afternoon. His salary will be $72,765.
Bailey is a THS graduate and received his associate in arts degree from North Central Missouri College, his bachelor of science in education degree from Northwest Missouri State University and his masters degree in education administration from William Woods University. Before being named assistant principal, Bailey taught eighth grade social studies at
TMS and served as middle school head football coach. In addition to his duties at Trenton R-9, Bailey is a Missouri Leadership Conference graduate and has presented at the Missouri Educational Technology Conference. He and his wife, Krista, are the parents of three sons. He is the son of Kevin and Cathy Bailey of Trenton. Kasey Bailey
WOMEN’S SHELTER Annual Fundraiser
Chief’s Tea Is April 12 The seventh annual Chief’s Tea to benefit the Green Hills Women’s Shelter will be held on Friday, April 12. The tea is hosted by Trenton Police Chief Rex Ross and will be held at the First Assembly of God Church Activity Center, beginning at 11 a.m. Instead of the traditional brunch, a luncheon will be served during the event, which will also include a survivor’s panel of domestic violence survivors, a keynote speaker who has lived See Tea, Page 7
Briefs... Committees To Meet The finance, utility and administrative committees of the Trenton City Council will hold meetings tonight (Tuesday) at city hall. The Finance Committee will meet at 6 p.m. to discuss the 2019-20 budget for Trenton Municipal Utilities. The Utility Committee meeting at 6:30 p.m. will include discussion of pad and pole mount transformer bids and a review of monthly financial reports. The Administrative Committee will meet at 7 p.m. to discuss the city ordinance regarding snow removal from sidewalks and review animal boarding proposals.
Rissler Book Fair The Rissler Elementary School will hold its spring book fair on March 25-29 in the school library. Students, parents, grandparents will be able to stop by the library from 3 to 5 p.m. on March 24 to March 28 and from 3 to 6 p.m. on March 29 to purchase items. Students will also be able to purchase books during their library. In conjunction with the final day of the book fair, the school will hold an art show and family night from 5 to 6 p.m. with several activities planned. Bobbie Hainey is the Rissler School librarian.
Laredo Meeting The Laredo R-7 School District will host a public meeting on Tuesday, March 26 to present information regarding the proposed continuation of a $1.40 levy for operating expenses. The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Laredo Community Building. Voters will be asked to approve the levy during the April 2 school election.

Trenton High School’s Gold Rush choir spent the weekend touring St. Louis and working with various clinicians and teachers in the area as well as visiting local attractions. There were 23 students on the trip. Tyler Busick is the Trenton R-9 vocal music instructor.
National Weather Service Sunny through the middle of the week, with highs in the upper 50s and lows in the mid 30s. The high at the Government Weather Station at Trenton on Thursday, March 14 was 44, the high on Friday was 57 and the high on Saturday was 48. Sunday’s high was 57, the low was 25. There was.03 of an inch of rain on Thursday. There was no report from the Government Weather Station at Spickard.
The Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a coffee on Thursday, March 21. Sunnyview Nursing Home and Apartments will sponsor the event, which will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the dining area of the apartments. Breakfast snacks will be served. Chamber members are encouraged to participate in the networking opportunity.

Trenton High School senior Mykah Hurley is headed to John Wood Community College in Quincy, IL next fall to continue her career as a two-sport athlete. Hurley will be playing both softball and basketball at John Wood, carrying on a family tradition that saw both her aunt, Lory Mothersbaugh Passley and sister, McKinley Hurley play the same two sports at North Central Missouri College. Hurley was a member of the THS softball team that finished second in the MSHSAA Class 2 State Girls Softball Tournament this past fall and the THS girls basketball team, which recently earned third place in the MSHSAA Class 3 State Girls Basketball Tournament. The Trenton High School wrestling and boys basketball teams gathered on Thursday night to honor the past season and the accomplishments that were achieved. THS Wrestling Trenton finished the season with a 12-12 dual record while capturing second place at the GRC Tournament, third at the Plattsburg Tournament and fourth at the Lexington Dual Tournament. The Bulldogs sent three wrestlers to state this season senior Jadan Whitney and juniors Mark Trump and Noah Lewis.

Whitney, who collected his second-straight third-place medal at the state tournament, received academic all-state honors for the second year in a row as well. He was also awarded certificates for leading the team in pins (30), takedowns (115) and best overall record (47-5). LOCAL DEATHS Mary Josephine “Jo” Hoffman Mary Josephine “Jo’ Hoffman died in Lee's Summit on Monday, Jan. 28, at age 97. Born Mary Josephine Hoffman in Trenton, Jo called herself a renegade. She wanted to be called Josephine, but settled for Jo. Her Grandmother Hoffman, a stiff-backed, English lady, was determined to make a lady out of her and they both enjoyed the battles, each winning about half the time. Jo spent the better part of a year living with her grandparents at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC during her grandfather's tenure as Assistant Secretary of Agriculture in the Hoover administration. There she skated the back alley of the Mayflower and made great friends with Mike, the doorman. She was the oldest of three children born to Stuart and Nada Wild Hoffman. She lost her beloved father, Stuart, at the age of seven or eight and her brother Stuart, known as Studie, died in his 20's in a car accident. Her sister, Annette, died of cancer at Jo's house. Her "sweet, wide-eyed, hardworking" mother Nada lived well past 100, playing the piano, enjoying bridge and feeding Jo's employees candy. The Hoffman family had a large mercantile store in Trenton and later some satellite stores in Gallatin and Cameron. Her mother's family, the Wilds, lived in Spickard, a spot on the road as Jo described it, where her grandfather was the postmaster and her grandmother actually
made baseballs for the kids to use in play. Her first job at the drugstore in Trenton earned her the distinction of being one of the first to hold a Social Security card. And there were plenty of firsts in Jo's life, not the least of which was the first woman on the city desk, and eventually assistant city editor, at the Kansas City Star and Times. Her first career goal was to be a cowboy and she and her cousin Charlie spent lots of their youth exploring the countryside on their ponies. Her chaps and her Stetson hat were eternally prized possessions. Jo moved on to the newspaper business, earning her journalism degree from MU and bought the Grundy County Gazette in 1946, where she had the time of her life for seven years. Jo was inducted into the Missouri Press Association Hall of Fame and shared her ideas for future publishing success...less "mother/apple pie" stuff, how to balance the free internet access with the paid circulation offering and ended with "just thinking about what I'd do and try makes me want to go right out and buy another dinky weekly.” Her enthusiasm for thinking and life never waned. Jo was instrumental in getting the Star reporters converted from manual typewriters to computers. In the early 80's she owned a technologically advanced typesetting company, Rahija and Associates, and when
asked how she had learned so much about computers, she responded "I built one,” took another drag off her unfiltered cigarette and kept working. Between stints at the KC Star, Jo taught journalism at USC and spent a number of years as editor for the VFW Auxiliary. Jo leaves her cousins, Chris Hoffman and his wife, Jackie and Phil Hoffman and his wife, Connie, all of Trenton, Martha Goedert and her husband, Jim of Omaha, NE, Phillip and Birgitta McClanahan of The Sea Ranch, CA, Robert McClanahan and wife, Sarah of Short Hills, NJ, Judith Harrington of Washington, DC, Linda Hurt of Omaha, NE, Suzanne Barnes of Chesapeake, VA and Alice Erickson of Holdredge, NE. Debbie Wilson, her friend and caregiver of 12 years also survives as well as friends Patty Nicholson and Landa Williams. Her long-time friend, Jeanne Greendahl, died in 2007. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at the Resthaven Mortuary at Trenton. June Pickett June Pickett, an 88-year-old resident of Trenton, died at 3:04 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the North Care Hospice House in North Kansas City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2019 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Trenton. The body will be cremated after the service and burial will be at a later date at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Media, IL. A family visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday at the church. Mrs. Pickett was born on
March 27, 1930 in Alma, the daughter of Conrad and Agnes Erickson Rynell. She moved to Trenton with her family in 1943 and graduated from Trenton High School in 1948 and Trenton Junior College in 1950. She graduated summa cum laude from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL in 1952. She was married on June 2, 1953. Mrs. Pickett was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church (LCMS) and Phi Beta Kappa. She is survived by three children, Linda (Clint Rowe) Pickett of Lincoln, NE; Kathy (Robert) Brinser of Liberty;

Two Elected To S&WCD Board Two individuals have been elected to the Grundy County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors following voting that took place on March 8. Ethan Griffin will serve a four-year term in Area 1, which represents the townships of Washington, Harrison, Franklin (west of Highway 65) and Lincoln (west of Highway 65). John Rice was elected to a four-year term in Area IV, which represents the townships of Trenton (west of Highway 65), Jackson (west of Highway 65), Madison and Jefferson.
Linda Lea Lantz Linda Lea Lantz, a 69-yearold resident of Browning, died on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Sullivan County Memorial Hospital in Milan. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at the Browning United Methodist Church in Browning. Burial will follow in the Hoover Cemetery, west of Browning. A family visitation is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at the church. Mrs. Lantz was born on Feb. 14, 1950 in Chillicothe, the daughter of Floyd Alvin and Lois Marie Oliver Wright. She attended school in
Chillicothe, Tina-Avalon and graduated from Princeton High School in 1968. She later attended Trenton Junior College. She then moved to Browning, where she became a farm wife and mother. She worked at ConAgra in Milan from 1995 to 2002. She was a member of the Browning United Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading books, gardening and traveling. She was married on June 27, 1970 in Trenton, to Michael Rayburn Lantz, who survives of the home. She is also survived by one son, John Lantz and his wife, Julie of Green City; three
grandchildren, October Lantz, Devon Lantz and Dallas Lantz; one brother, Ronnie Wright and his wife, Kathy of Trenton; three half-sisters, Susie Barnes of Trenton, Patricia Wright of Trenton and Ruthie Dillard of Macon; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, James Lantz, and her stepmother, Rosalie Wright. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Hoover Cemetery or the Browning United Methodist Church. Ruschmeier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Shirley Ann Lymer Shirley Ann Lymer, an 81year-old former Trenton resident, died at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at the Crossings at Victory Station in Murfreesboro, TN. The body was cremated under the direction of the Tri-Star Cremation. A family service will be held later. Mrs. Lymer was born on March 24, 1937 in Michie, TN, the daughter of Clarence and Opal Goff. Mrs. Lymer met her husband, Dr. Ted Lymer, in 1956, wed in 1958 and moved to Trenton in 1960. Ted and Shirley had two children, Sherris and Ted II. Mrs. Lymer was an active member of the Wesley United
Methodist Church as well as holding office with the board of directors; National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, where she held several offices; Phi Beta Kappa; and the Antique Study Club. She also served on the board of the Riverside Country Club, volunteered at the hospital and rest home, was a Girl Scout leader and a member of the Kiwanis Women’s Club. Survivors include her two children, Ted Lymer and his wife, Christina of Colorado Springs, CO and Sherris Brown and her husband, Jeff of Murfreesboro, TN; five grandchildren, Giuliana Feamster and her husband, Peter of
Michigan, Gia Tirella of Phoenix, AZ, Gabrielle Brown of Murfreesboro and Audrey Johnson and her husband, Dave and Aaron Lymer, all of Grinnell, IA; two great-grandchildren, Sadie Kaye Johnson and Finn Ravensway Johnson of Grinnell; one brother, Jack Goff and his wife, Brenda of Ballwin, MS; and two sisters, Jeraldine Wages of Texas and Lorraine Berry of Mississippi. Pi Master Meets For Lunch Pi Master chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met on Tuesday, March 12 for lunch at the North 65 Center. Delores Newton was the hostess. Chairperson Mary Lou Crawford conducted the business meeting. Plans were made to celebrate Founder's Day on April 23 in Chillicothe. Phyllis
Anderson will be hostess. Attending the meeting were Lois Moore, Barbara Knudsen, Margie Wilcox, Jean Rousselot, Ms. Newton, Ms. Crawford, Ms. Anderson and Ms. Rousselot. Ms. Rousselot will be hostess for the March 26 meeting at the North 65 Center.
Martha Provance and Chris Newton were welcomed as new members when the Scrappy Quilters Quilt Guild met on March 5 at the First Baptist Church in Trenton. There were 18 members present. President Donna Wilson gave an update on the progress of the quilts being made to donate to the women’s shelter. A quilt being donated to the fundraiser benefit for Mackenzie Cunningham was displayed and a label will be put on the quilt. Marie Boyle showed the blocks already made for the yearly group charity quilt. A report was given on the quilt being made for this year’s retreat. Plans are to have the quilt top finished by the first of August to allow time to have it quilted and bound. Marie Boyle will applique the center of the quilt and members will construct the other blocks. May 4 will be this year’s shop hop to Iowa. The group will be going to shops in Humeston and Lucas. Upcoming events discussed were the Brookfield Quilt Show on  March 23, the Missouri Star Academy on May 21-24, the Kansas City Quilt Festival on June 13-15 and the Liberty
Quilt Walk on June 15. Vickie Pash and Cyndi Johnson told of the retreat that will be held Sept. 26-29. Members were able to sign up at the meeting. There are 20 spots available to members first with remaining spots to be made available to the public. Mrs. Wilson presented a short program on “how to tell the right and wrong side� of batting. She had samples for members to see the difference. Those participating in Share and Tell were Linda Mullins, Linda Hammond, Delores Kuttler, Chris Newton, Twyla Johnson, Dawn Stout, Flora Lee, Patty Martin, Cyndi Johnson, Vickie Pash and Mrs. Wilson. Snacks for the evening were provided by Betty Bevelle and Flora Lee. The next meeting will be on April 2. Cyndi Johnson will be helping those interested in learning more about how to use the walking foot and free motion foot during the sewing time beginning at 5 p.m. Those wishing to participate are asked to bring two quilt sandwiches to practice on. The meeting will follow the sewing time at 6:30 p.m.

Jeff and Vickie Pash of Trenton announce the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter, Crystal Pash of Gallatin, to Jeremiah Hamilton of Trenton, son of Junior and Denise Hamilton of Tindall. The bride-to-be is a 2009 graduate of Trenton High School, a 2013 graduate of Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville and earned her master’s degree in education from William Woods University in 2018. She currently teaches first grade at the Covey Searcy Elementary School in Gallatin. The groom-to-be is a 2011 graduate of Trenton High School and received a degree in radiologic technology from Hillyard Technical Center in 2014. He is currently employed as a CT technologist at Hedrick Medical Center in Chillicothe. The couple will be married at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at The Pearl event venue at Hamilton.

LOCAL Two Held In County Jail Two persons were arrested over the weekend, including one charged in connection with a November 2018 incident and one wanted in Jasper County for child molestation. According to the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, 30year-old Jason E. Clay of Kansas City has been charged with a class A misdemeanor of resisting arrest and a class B  misdemeanor of second degree property damage. He is accused of resisting arrest by Trenton Police Officer Michael Wilson on Nov. 27, 2018 and breaking Officer Wilson’s hand-held radio during that altercation. Clay is
being held in the Grundy County Detention Center on $3,500 cash bond, with a court appearance scheduled for March 26. Also arrested was a 36-yearold homeless man, Jason Brodie, who was wanted on a Jasper County warrant charging him with two counts of first degree child molestation. Grundy County Sheriff Rodney Herring said that in recent days Brodie had approached rural residents asking for water and other assistance. Brodie is being held in the GCDC on $75,000 cash-only bond and will be returned to Jasper County to face the charges.
EMERGENCY SERVICES Trenton Police Department March 11: arrests were made on warrants in the north area and east area and a subject was found to be in possession of marijuana in the downtown area. Property damage was reported at an east residence. March 12: a report of stealing was investigated at an east business and officers responded to a motor vehicle accident in the west part of town. Officers went to a north business, where two persons were arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with physical evidence and stealing. A domestic assault was reported at a south residence. March 13: officers made two arrests on warrants in the downtown area and responded to a motor vehicle accident in the downtown area. March 14: officers investi-
gated nuisance violations at two east residences and investigated a report of passing a school bus in the south part of town. Officers responded to a domestic dispute at an east residence. March 15: a subject possessed marijuana in the east part of town and responded to a domestic dispute at an east residence. Suspicious circumstances were investigated in the downtown area. March 16: a dog at large was reported at an east residence. March 17: two assaults were investigated at north businesses and officers made an arrest for driving while intoxicated in the west part of town. Officers responded to a domestic assault at a west residence and made an arrest for sexual misconduct in the east part of town.

Trenton R-9 Bulldog Mascot team held its annual spring Pancake Day fundraiser on Saturday in the Trenton High School Commons. Several came out to support the mascots, who raised just over $400. Funds will be used for the mascot program. Dear Annie: I am an officer in an old but still active community cemetery with graves dating back to at least the 1800s and with plenty of available space. We have the usual slate of officers and board of directors. We advertise our public meetings, as directed in our bylaws, but they are poorly attended. The handful of interested parties who attend these meetings are saddled with the issues of insurance, locating graves, hiring gravediggers, finding and awarding mowing contracts, driveway upkeep, tree trimming, brush removal along our borders, upkeep of our small meeting building, and whatever other needs arise. A few years ago, when a burial was scheduled and our hilly driveway was very washed-out, two of us -women in our 60s -- gathered rocks by hand to fill in the big ruts and then sat on the ground to put those rocks in some of the ruts in our driveway. Very few folks seem to appreciate and support our volunteer efforts. Most lot owners never attend meetings and never send a donation. These
are the folks who do not hesitate to call us or write to us with their complaints. We didn't ask for these responsibilities. We inherited our feeling of responsibility and respect from our parents, grandparents and beyond. We would welcome a helping hand with paperwork, contracts and decisions. Like the case with all volunteer organizations, donations would be welcome, but more important is our need for help. Fortunately, we are able to pay someone to mow, but even that brings complaints when the grassy hillside is wet and too slippery to mow. How can we spur the interest of these folks? -- Who's Going to Do It When We're Gone? Dear Who's: Most obviously -- and most importantly -- you need to ask, and ask often. Few people share your innate sense of responsibility and service. Most people need to be reminded that there are opportunities out there for them to make their communities better places. And that is how you should frame volunteering -- as an op-

Cyber bank robbers Some big banks have recently taken a cyber beating. In a survey of security executives from 25 of the world’s top banks — including four of the 10 biggest — nearly 70 percent said internet attacks were up last year. Sunnyview Administrator Donita Youtsey thanked the chamber for recognizing the efforts of the business, stating that “a lot of blood, sweat and tears went into earning this award.” Bob Pippen spoke on behalf of Modin, also thanking the chamber and the community for recognizing the business and its contributions to the community. Chad Boyd served as master of ceremonies for the lip sync contest, which featured performances by defending champion Dan Wiebers, the Trenton Ambassadors and the duo of Seth Cox and Phil Ray. Wiebers was unable to hold
onto his title, which was captured by Cox and Ray. After round one, which saw the pair perform “Islands in the Stream” as Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, the two then came out as the Blues Brothers and defeated the Trenton Ambassadors, who made it to the finals by performing a medley of songs by Queen. They also lip synched to “YMCA” in the finals.

Helping Hands 4-H Club Meets The Helping Hands 4-H Club met on Wednesday, March 13 at the First Christian Church.
