NCMDA ‘Three-Legged Stool’

Retention, Expansion Keys To Economic Success

Editor’s Note: The Trenton Republican-Times will be publishing a weekly series of articles regarding the activities of the North Central Missouri Development Alliance and information about economic and community development in Grundy County. By Micah Landes, Director North Central Missouri Development Alliance In past updates, economic development has been equated to a three-legged stool with the legs being business attraction, business retention and local business development/entrepreneurship. In this update we will discuss business retention and expansion. As discussed before, if the public were asked what the definition of economic development is, the majority would respond it is all about bringing a new business to town. While attraction is a component to a successful economic development program, business retention serves as the foundation everything else is built upon. It makes no sense to use time and resources to attract a new business if an organization is not tending to the needs of existing local business, which is the focus of business retention. Locally-owned small business is the lifeblood to a stable economy, providing a stable tax base, job opportunities and support to local fundraising efforts, particularly the school system and special need causes. Grundy County is blessed with numerous locally-owned businesses, which include farms and agrelated businesses. However, when it comes to retaining these businesses, there is a considerable gap in the relationship between business owners and economic development. To support a robust business retention program, economic development organizations must proactively connect with the business community so they can gain a functioning understanding of the business and be better equipped to respond to individual business needs. While connecting with businesses sounds like a simple enough task, it is far from easy. It is very time and labor intensive to conduct business visits to each business throughout a county and to maintain ongoing communication and follow-up. Given NCMDA’s limited staff of one and a volunteer board, some businesses do not receive personal contact, resulting in businesses feeling disconnected from the support and resources that could have a positive effect. NCMDA is planning to embark on the deSee NCMDA, Page 5

COVID-19

Activities Still Scheduled With increasing COVID-19 cases in the state of Missouri and Grundy County, staff at Crowder State Park have made changes in the way upcoming events at the park will be presented. Three events are planned between now and Jan. 1 and while COVID has eliminated in-person activities for now, staff has developed creative ways to continue providing these traditional winter events to the public. A “Virtual Christmas Nature Story and Crafts” will be presented on Saturday, Dec. 12, with the public being able to participate via the Crowder

State Park Facebook page. Staff members will be reading Christmas stories as well as leading a craft activity, with the event to begin at 10 a.m. This year’s winter hike challenge will be held from Friday, Dec. 18 to Sunday, Dec. 27 and includes a scavenger hunt. Staff members have placed Christmas-themed items along all of the park’s trails and as visitors come to hike, they will be able to take photos of the objects they find. The photos are to be emailed to crowder.statepark@dnr.mo.go v and the person finding the most items during the challenge will receive a prize. Hik-

ers are asked not to remove any of the items so that everyone wanting to participate will have a chance to do so. Those taking part are asked to dress for the weather and trail terrain. “First-Day” hikes will take place on Friday, Jan. 1. There will be a 1-mile hike on the Tall Oaks Trail as well as 3mile hikes on the Tall Oaks and the River Forks trails at 10 a.m. Persons should meet at the beginning of the Tall Oaks Trail. Princeton will soon be the home of a new three-field softball/baseball complex to be located on the west side of the intersection of Highway 136 and Route FF in northwest Princeton. The complex, which will also include a parking lot and concession/storage building, will replace current ballfields located in the Mercer County Fairgrounds that over the years have been unable to be used at times due to flooding issues. Community members, Princeton School alumni and grants are being utilized to pay for construction costs, with 1960 PHS graduate Judy Derry-Mahoney making a pledge to donate $1 for each $1 donated for the project up to $150,000 of the total cost. Another PHS alum, Kathy Allen Thompson (class of 1973), recently made a $15,000 donation. Persons wanting to contribute to the project can do so by contacting the Princeton School District office.

JUMP START After Three Failed Attempts, Trenton Finally Gets Its ’20-’21 Campaign Up And Running WINSTON BOYS 60 TRENTON BOYS 28 TRENTON BOYS 77 GILMAN BOYS 68

Opening the season without four varsity players wasn’t ideal for the Trenton High School boys basketball team. Falling 60-28 to the Winston Redbirds at home was even less than ideal. But after a bevy of postponements to begin the season, just being in a gym playing a basketball game was enough to overshadow a season-opening loss - at least for now. Trenton was scheduled to open the season 11 days earlier at home against Macon. That game was pushed back. The following Monday promised a trip to Cameron to open the season. Again, that game was shelved. Then the scheduled match-up with Winston was moved back a day before Trenton finally got on the court to kick start the 2020-2021 season. The postponements magnified the fragility of the season upon us and that was not lost in the wake of Tuesday night’s defeat. “It was awesome to be back in the gym, Trenton coach Corbin Coe said. “We were shorthanded with four varsity players currently out, but I thought the kids competed hard. Every game we get this season is a gift and I am going to enjoy every second I am allowed to spend with these young men. Trenton stumbled out of the gates, falling behind 17-7 in the opening frame after leading for a bit early on. The Bulldogs bounced back in the second quarter, cutting the lead back to single digits. Trenton trailed 24-16 at the break and stayed close early in the third quarter before things unraveled. Winston pulled away late and turned a decent contest into a runaway. “Winston is a very nice pro-

gram, Coe said. “We did a great job defensively in the first half making it tough for them to score. They were able to pull away late due to our biggest issue of turnovers and offensive rebounds that plagued us in the second half. Trenton was paced by Chase Otto, who scored 14 points in the loss. Preston Harris added six points and three assists, Royce Jackson had five points and eight rebounds and Kayden Spencer rounded out the team total with three points. As good as Otto was against Winston, he was even better on Wednesday against Gilman City as Trenton picked up its first win of the season, 77-68. Otto scored a career-high 34 points to go with three assists and three steals. “Chase had a great first half and a good game overall, Coe said. “He is our leading returning scorer from last year, but this season, so far, has jumped that way up. We really have needed his offensive contributions early this season. Trenton got off to a much quicker start in its second game, racing out to a 20-8 first quarter lead on the Hawks. Gilman’s offense was able to match Trenton stride-for-stride in the second quarter, though, and the Bulldogs took a 46-34 lead into the locker room at halftime. Trenton was able to coast to the finish, however, holding off a small Gilman run near the end to pick up the first win of the season and move to 1-1 overall. “We are always looking for fast starts, Coe said. “We jumped out to a 15-2 lead early in the game. Anytime you can build a double digit lead early, it is beneficial for sure. Behind Otto’s career night, Jackson added 16 points, 21 rebounds and six assists. Preston Harris had 14 points and four assists. Rounding out the Trenton total were six points from Randy Bowden, four points and five assists from Tucker Otto and three points and four assists from Gabe Novak. Trenton closes out play in the Gallatin Tournament tonight (Friday), traveling to Maysville. That game follows a girls contest between the two schools, which tips off at 6 o’clock.

Trenton Girls Seeking Offense Two Games In Bulldogs Leaning On Defense To Keep Them In Close Games Early TRENTON GIRLS 34 WINSTON GIRLS 27 GILMAN CITY GIRLS 37 TRENTON GIRLS 35

The Trenton High School girls basketball team knew there was going to be some work to do, especially early in the season. With a massive points gap to fill with the early graduation of Maci Moore, Trenton needs to find new sources of points in 2020. It’s still a work in progress. Trenton opened its season this week, hosting Winston and Gilman City on back-to-back nights as part of the Gallatin Tournament, which is being played at individual schools to avoid a large contingent of teams converging on one spot. Trenton’s defense was pretty good in the first two games. The offense is still searching. The Bulldogs picked up a 34-27 win over Winston on Tuesday, but fell 3735 to Gilman City on Wednesday. In both games, points were tough to come by. Hosting Winston, the Bulldogs found points from Teya Cooksey, who knocked down a trio of triples on her way to a 13-point night. Chandler Lynch supplemented Cooksey’s effort with seven points and three steals. After that, it was points here and there to help put Trenton over. Morgan King had five points, Gracyn Rongey had four, Rebecca Urich finished with three and Madi Moore had two points and five rebounds. The point totals were far from off the charts for Trenton, but the Bulldogs’ defense more than made up for it. Winston found scoring chances very tough to come by as Trenton buckled down on the defensive end. After leading 9-7 after one quarter of play, Trenton yielded just two points in the entire second quarter, pushing their advantage to 21-9 by the break. Trenton led by as many as 14 points in the second half before winding up with the seven-point win. “I was so proud of how hard the girls worked, Trenton coach Kameron Cool said. “We haven’t been in a gym together for a long time, so to have this kind of effort says a lot about them. Another strong defensive effort on Wednesday wasn’t enough to mask the offensive issues Trenton incurred. The Bulldogs scored just 11 points in the first half and trailed by as many as 13 points midway through the third quarter. The Bulldogs rallied, though, finding its offense just in time to make a late run. Trenton scored 17 points in the fourth quarter alone, cutting the deficit to a single point before Gilman connected on a free throw to go up 3735. Trenton had a pair of looks at the basket ahead of the buzzer, but neither fell as the Bulldogs dropped to 1-1. “Shots just didn’t fall tonight, but I am so proud of how hard the girls played, Cool said. “They could’ve given in to being tired, but they fought like crazy to get back in it and give us a chance to win. Now we are excited for our first practice in a couple of weeks to get some things ironed out and be ready to compete on Friday. Rongey paced Trenton with 14 points in the loss. Urich added 8 points, Mallory Sole had four, Cooksey and Lynch each had three and Jenna Reeter and Moore rounded out the scoring with two apiece. Trenton travels to Maysville tonight (Friday) for the final game of the Gallatin Tournament, tipping off at 6.

Trenton fell 34-14 in the boys A game and lost a two-quarter B boys game 20-14. Trenton’s A girls were led by eight points from Mirena King. “The A team played a great first half, Trenton girls’ coach Pam Bowden said. “The second half was a different story, but we hadn’t practiced or conditioned for over a week. For the boys A team, Kiefer Tolson scored Trenton’s first five points on the way to a team-high nine points. Isaac Dixon scored six points to pace the B team. On Tuesday, Trenton was in Chillicothe for A games only with Bishop Hogan. Trenton’s girls lost 47-19 while the boys fell 35-26. Extension Notes by University of Missouri Extension

OPEN COWS Things are busy in rural northwest Missouri. Harvest is progressing quickly. Fall calving is starting to wind down and many beef producers have started weaning spring-born calves. Those who have weaned are also beginning to pregnancy check. I have been hearing that some herds in the area are experiencing a higher percentage of open females than “normal”. This has been reported in both replacement heifers and mature cows. I visited with one of the veterinarians in our area about the replacement heifers and he had an interesting theory on why we might be seeing a higher percent open in that group. He

said that those heifers would have been in utero during the 2018 drought. He thinks the stress that those cows were going through during that drought might affect those heifers kept back as replacements in 2020. Fetal programming is very interesting and while research in this area is relatively new, results do indicate that future animal performance and productivity is impacted by the uterine environment in which they are developed. Many things can affect pregnancy rates and those include disease, bull issues, weather, nutrition, etc. One thing that pro-

ducers can control, and has been proven to impact pregnancy rate, is the body condition of the females at calving time. Cows that calve in a good body condition breed back better, it is just that simple. Producers should target females to be in a body condition score 5 or 6 at calving. Higher body condition scores are probably not justifiable due to the increased feed necessary attain them. Now is the time to take a critical look at your herd and assess body condition. If your cows are thinner than optimum, you can add extra weight at this time very efficiently due to the stage of production that the cows are in. Some work at Oklahoma State University also demonstrated that after calving it is important for cows to maintain body condition as cows that lose weight during that period also have lower conception rates. If you have questions on body condition scoring or on developing a feed program, contact your MU Extension Field Specialist in Livestock.

Soybean Harvest, Wheat Planting Coming To End Soil Moisture Adequate Temperatures last week averaged 42.1 degrees, 2.7 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 1.05 inches statewide, 0.16 inches above average. There were 3.6 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Nov. 29. Topsoil moisture supply was rated 2 percent very short, 11 percent short, 85 percent adequate and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated 3 percent very short, 19 percent short and 78 percent adequate. Soybean harvest was 97 percent complete, compared to

the five-year average of 95 percent. Cotton harvest was 94 percent complete, compared to the five-year average of 98 percent. Winter wheat planted progressed to 95 percent, compared to the five-year average of 94 percent. Winter wheat emerged was 89 percent, compared to the five-year average of 82 percent. Winter wheat condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 42 percent fair, 48 percent good and 2 percent excellent.

Master Gardener Classes Start In January Gardening is an activity with many rewards. “One of them is the satisfaction of sharing your plant knowledge with others,” said David Trinklein, University of Missouri Extension state horticulture specialist. “The MU Extension Master Gardener program was initiated to do just that,” Trinklein said. “Its motto, ‘helping oth-

To Our Wonderful Home Town

We are so grateful to all of our family, friends, co-workers, neighbors and church families for your healing touch during the illness and death of our dad, Curtis LaFollette. The Bible teaches us many lessons and one scripture in particular is so pertinent! “Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith Heb. 12:1-2. Dad’s race lasted for 90 years! The last six years were rife with many pitfalls and boulders and none of us would have chosen this path-but his struggle forced us to celebrate tiny victories, like a smile, a pat on the hand or hearing him say “I love you! Never could we imagine how wonderful it could be to hear him say our names! Throughout our journey we have been so blessed as we were NEVER alone! Our husbands, Randy, Eric and Jerry were right there with us! We proudly called ourselves a team of six! And our children and Aunt Sharon also loved and supported us in ways too numerous to mention! In the end Dad ran a good race and he won! That’s the beauty of knowing our Savior! HE never let us down! “Thank you is such an inadequate word but it’s all we have! Daddy loved this town and the people in it! Please know how much you mean to all of us! God Bless You All Carmella, Rochelle and Deidra and families

velopment of a robust business retention and expansion strategy in 2021. For NCMDA’s retention strategy to be successful, it will be delivered via a team approach. To effectively contact businesses, a task force will be established and charged with making business contacts, assessing needs, and gathering resources, assistance, and strategies to meet those needs. The task force members will include NCMDA board members, chamber of commerce representatives, retired business owners, county and city representatives, utility representatives, education representatives, financial institutions and existing business owners. The goals of the task force will be to improve the overall business operating climate within Grundy County, ensure healthy competition, increase availability of quality jobs and stabilizing the local economy. To achieve these goals, the

These will be achieved in a variety of ways, including personal visits, phone calls, mailings, business resource and educational offerings, business recognitions and appreciation events and business networking opportunities. NCMDA looks forward to this initiative and invites anyone interested in being involved in the task force to contact Director Micah Landes. In the meantime, if you are an existing business owner in Grundy County, the NCMDA board and Mrs. Landes wants you to know that your business is particularly important to the overall economic health of Grundy County. Should you have an immediate business need, please reach out to Mrs. Landes at 660-973-2996 or feel free to contact any NCMDA board member. The Trenton Police Department investigated an accident Dec. 1 in which both drivers have conflicting stories of what happened after the mishap. According to Police Chief Rex Ross’ accident report, the mishap occurred just after 8:30 a.m. when a car driven by Jeffrey A. Two persons sustained injuries in a house fire just west of Trenton on Tuesday evening. According to Grundy County Rural Fire Protection District Chief Kenny Roberts, the blaze was at the home of Doug Little, located on Northwest Fifth Street, just northwest of the Charlie Dye Bridge. It began in a small upstairs room that was located between an open area and a child’s bedroom. Roberts said that Little reported he heard a

Both vehicles had a green light and struck in the intersection, with Brown’s car sustaining moderate damage to the left front of the vehicle. Brown told Chief Ross that both drivers stopped and Brown asked if they should call the police. He said Hughes said no and stated that he did

God Bless You All Carmella, Rochelle and Deidra and families

me, I've come to believe that there is a higher power and he is very great and merciful. I still have problems going out for walks. I probably haven't walked more than 15 feet outside my yard. I still regularly have nightmares about the event and replay it in my head. The people who own the dogs have more dogs now, just as violent, and they run loose. I keep worrying what would happen if a kid were attacked. So, should I just accept that as the justice, or is there something else that I should do? -Sincerely Confused Dear Confused: You can have faith that God will deliver justice in the end while still pursuing justice yourself in the here and now. Your concern transcends even your own personal trauma: It's about making sure that this never happens to anyone else. You are rightly terrified. From the sound of it, it's not a matter of if these dogs will injure someone else but when. I urge you to contact your local authorities, repeatedly, if

Dear Annie: I live in Texas in a small neighborhood and am still relatively new to this area. Two years ago, a traumatic event happened to me not long after I'd moved in. I was on my daily walk through the neighborhood. (I used to go two miles daily, just to clear my head.) I was passing by a neighbor's yard when their three (unleashed) dogs violently attacked me. The dogs dragged me 40 yards through a pasture. Fortunately, three men intervened and saved my life. It was a horrific ordeal, and I still suffer from some injuries that I incurred during the attack. I'll have to self-catheter for the rest of my life. I have PTSD. My question has to do with the fact that the dog owners were never fined or punished in any way. I keep trying to tell myself it happened for a reason -- that I shouldn't worry about justice coming out of it. You see, up until the attack, I was agnostic; I didn't really believe in heaven or hell. But since the attack and those men saving

necessary. There's no way that it's legal for your neighbors to allow their dogs to roam free like that, especially when they have a history of violence. The very least they could do is put up a fence. I hope you are seeking therapy. You've suffered incredibly serious trauma, and untreated PTSD can take a heavy toll both physically and mentally over the long term. As a supplement to therapy, I would recommend the book "The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma" by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk. I am so sorry that this truly horrible thing happened to you. I pray that one day you can again enjoy your daily walks in the sun.

Slaking a thirst for Slack Business software pioneer Salesforce.com’s nearly $30 billion purchase of Slack aims to give the two companies a better shot at competing against longtime industry powerhouse Microsoft. Salesforce already leads in its specialty of customer-relationship software, known as CRM, a suite of tools that helps organizations manage customer relationships. Salesforce holds 18.4% of the $60.3 billion CRM market, far ahead of its nearest competitors SAP, Oracle, Microsoft and Adobe, according to

research group IDC. But Salesforce, which helped pioneer cloud computing and software as a service, is trailing Microsoft in the broader competition for cloud-based services. Scooping up Slack, a popular work collaboration tool fighting a tough battle against Microsoft’s similar Teams service, is designed to help complement Salesforce’s suite of online offerings. Analysts say it could also place the San Francisco software company in a better position to catch up to bigger cloud players.

AREA DEATHS Donald Eugene Favor Donald Eugene Favor, 82, passed away peacefully from ALS on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2020. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2020 at the Ridgeway Baptist Church in Ridgeway. Burial with military rites will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery at Ridgeway. A family visitation will be held from 5 to 7 o’clock tonight (Friday, Dec. 4, 2020) at the church, where social distancing will be observed and masks are required per the family’s request. Roberson Funeral Home of Bethany is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Favor was born on June 17, 1938, the son of Bill and Eva Favor. After graduating from Gilman City High School in 1956, he served in the United States Army, then returned to Gilman City and married the love of his life, Patty Gillespie. Don owned and operated the Gilman Mill for many years and Don and Patty resided in the Gilman City and Ridgeway areas throughout their 57-year marriage. Don’s pride and joy were his four girls, Judy Favor of Olathe, KS, Becky (Dave) Lyons of Pleasant Hill, IA, Barb (Myrle) Swank of Jamesport and Pam (Eric) Padget of Baxter, IA. He also derived much joy from his eight grandchildren, Danny (Rachel) King, Michael (Madeline) King, Kaylie, Brady and Karissa Lyons and Brendyn, Ally and Corryn Padget; and three great-grandchildren, Kaleb King (Danny) and Gregory and Nathan King

(Michael). Besides his family, Don’s priorities were his faith, friends and horses. He was an active member of the Ridgeway Baptist Church and enjoyed the fellowship and support of the men’s group there. Don never knew a stranger and any of his daughters’ friends who came to hang out at the farm instantly became “family.” He particularly enjoyed taking the grandkids and new farm guests on memorable fourwheeler or Kubota rides to check the cows. After retiring from the South Harrison High School maintenance department, he spent many hours sharing his love for horses with others by participating in local county parades with his team and wagon, providing wagon rides at area nursing homes, and his favorite annual activity - giving kids and families wagon rides at the Reindeer Lane Christmas Tree Farm in Trimble. In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, survivors include a sister, Rose Ann (Favor) Cochran of Mt. Airy, NC; sisters-in-law, Linda Favor of Albany and Sue McCue of Bethany; and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bill Favor; and a great-grandson, Jacob King. The family requests donations be made to the MidAmerica Chapter of the ALS Association in care of Roberson Funeral Home, PO Box 46, Bethany, MO 64424.

Gregory Allen Griffin Gregory Allen Griffin, 62 , peacefully departed for Heaven on Monday, Nov 30, 2020 in Rogers, AR. Greg was laid to rest on Friday, Dec. 4, 2020 at Martin Cemetery, north of Trenton, beside his mother and father. Born in Londonderry, Ireland, he was the son of the late Buel Clarence Griffin and Sheila Elizabeth Griffin (McKeown). He resided in Trenton throughout his younger years. Gregory, more affectionately known as “Greg” or “Uncy,” was compassionate, empathetic, genial and funloving. In the words of his niece, Ali, “He was one of the greatest men to ever grace this earth.” Growing up a military brat, he developed a love for travel and adventure early on. Moving back to the states, he became enthralled with baseball. He played baseball and football in his hometown of Trenton. Greg was a self-employed carpenter with amazing talents as a trim carpenter. As the saying goes, “Dog is a man’s best friend,” and that rang true for Greg and his many, many friends. As his family can recall, every memory of Greg includes a memory of his furry sidekicks, Rags, Annie, Bonnie and Cheyenne. Greg offered the sweetest devotion and care to his pets.

He found joy in life’s simplest treasures: a handwritten letter, game of cards, and warm cup of coffee. Greg was the best listener and valued a good conversation with friends, family and even strangers. No one was lonely in Greg’s company. He loved his family immensely, and has impacted each survivor tremendously. Through his last few years in and out of medical facilities, his gentle spirit brought out cordiality in his caretakers and sweet friendships were formed. While his family grieves, they also celebrate the confidence they have in knowing they will see Greg again one day in Heaven as he surrendered his life to Christ in the mid-1990’s. To quote his infamous tattoo, “Won’t you fly high, free bird?” He is survived by his two sisters, Louise Kolle and her husband, Greg Kolle of Citrus Heights, CA and Sheila Robinson and her husband, Bill Robinson of Bentonville, AR; one son, Neil Youngs and family, of Bradenton, FL; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Arrangements are under the direction of Slater-Neal Funeral Home of Trenton. Online condolences may be left at www.resthavenmort.com
