Although the weather was less than ideal, Downtown Trenton Christmas activities went on as scheduled on Saturday night with a number of events held throughout the downtown area. The Community Handbell Choir, under the direction of George Brundage (pictured at top) performed four musical selections at the Wesley United Methodist Church, where community members also gathered to sing “Silent Night” to end the night’s events. At left, Cole Soptic assisted youth with craft activities at The Space while Sesquicentennial Park, pictured above, was the location for the opening ceremonies, including the traditional holiday lighting ceremony, which featured new lights recently purchased by the Five Points Alive group. The parade was rescheduled to Friday, Dec. 14.

Grand River Valley Choir And Orchestra
Christmas Music Will Fill The Air This Weekend The Grand River Valley Choir and Orchestra will present its annual winter concert at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the First Baptist Church in Trenton. “Somewhere in My Memory” is the theme of the concert, which is also one of the songs to be performed by both the choir and orchestra. The song is from the movie, “Home Alone.” Additional songs on the program are "Sleigh Ride", “White Christmas”, three selections from "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", highlights from “A Christmas Festival” and “Christmastime.” The doors open at 2:30 p.m. There is no cost to attend, however, donations will be accepted, with those funds to be given to a public charity to be announced at the concert. A cookie reception in the basement of the church will follow the concert. Certificates of recognition will also be presented to members of the “Donor’s Club” at the beginning of the concert, honoring those who have contributed in the top three levels of giving. Park Board Meeting Cancelled Due to a lack of business, the Trenton Park Board has cancelled its December meeting, scheduled for Wednesday. The next regularly-scheduled meeting will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 2 at city hall.
R-9 Christmas Programs
Bingo Night Fundraiser
The Trenton R-9 School District will hold two Christmas programs this weekend, with both being open to the public at no charge. The annual S.M. Rissler Christmas Program will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7 at the Ketcham Community Center. Kindergarten and first grade students, along with the third and fourth grade honor choir, will be performing a variety of holiday music. Students are asked to be at the KCC no later than 6:15 p.m. On Sunday, Dec. 9, the Trenton R-9 Vocal Music Department will hold its annual Christmas Vesper services, which will begin at 4 p.m. at the First Baptist Church. The TMS fifth and sixth grade choir, the TMS seventh and eighth grade choir, the THS concert choir and Gold Rush will perform during the program, which will end with the traditional candlelighting ceremony. The THS Choir Boosters will be selling Christmas candies and treats in the basement of the church following the concert, with funds being used for choir trips planned for this spring.

National Weather Service Sunny and cold this week with highs in the mid to upper 20s and lows in the teens. The high on Friday at Trenton was 41 with .60 of an inch of rain, Saturday’s high was 47 with .57 of an inch of rain and Sunday’s high was 37, the low was 29, with a trace of snow melting to .04 of an inch. Sunday’s high at the Government Weather Station near Spickard was 35, the low was 28 with a trace of snow and .03 of an inch of rain was recorded.
The Trenton High School FCCLA chapter will hold a fundraiser on Saturday, Dec. 8 to help fund the chaptersponsored THS after-prom party in April. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a baked potato bar and bake sale, followed by Bingo at 7 p.m. The potato bar will be a free-will offering. Bingo cards will be sold for $3 each of $5 for two. Prizes will include gift cards, baked goods, tumblers and more. For more information, persons can contact THS FCCLA Advisor Margaret Mollenhour at the high school.
As part of the Trenton Downtown Christmas celebration, a “Christmas Light Scavenger Hunt” will be held on Friday, Dec. 14. The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Trenton Elks Lodge. Teams of three to six individuals will be solving riddles and taking photos of specific Christmas lights and holiday decorations in order to collect holiday items and complete designated tasks. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team. The cost is $25 per team, payable that evening when teams are registering. Team members must be at least 18 years of age unless accompanied by an adult. For more information, persons can contact Dr. Crystal Whitaker.
Christmas Card Event The Grundy County-Jewett Norris Library will hold an adult Christmas card-making class on Saturday, Dec. 15. The event will be held at 1:30 p.m. on the first floor of the library and offer instruction to adults for making unique Christmas cards using items available at the library. Interested persons can sign up at the checkout desk of the library during regular business hours.

Considered to be the most aggressive schedule in the 14year history, High School Holiday Hoops officials have released the upcoming schedule featuring 115 teams, 63 high schools from Missouri and Iowa and a total of 77 games. Hoops Director Steve Maxey says this year’s event features some of the most outstanding high school basketball programs in all of north Missouri and southern Iowa as well as across the ShowMe State. Teams representing high school enrollments from as few as 50 students to as many as 2,500 will participate in the 13-day event with all games played on the campus of North Central Missouri College in Trenton. “It is estimated that nearly 1,900 students/athletes will take to the court of the Ketcham Community Center in addition to the number of cheerleaders, managers, pep bands and performing troupes, making it a tremendous marketing opportunity for NCMC and the community,” Maxey said. All games will once again be played at the Ketcham Community Center and should weather or any other circumstance affect play, games will not be made up due to the availability of the KCC, days for scheduling and access to the teams. Sponsored by the North Central Missouri College Foundation and directed by a 15-member steering committee, Holiday Hoops fulfills the original intent of the event - to showcase student athletes from across the area, provide an economic impact on the entire region and market the college to prospective students. Maxey said the announced schedule is tentative as changes might occur because of conflicts among participating high schools. He noted the recent inclement weather continues to have some impact on scheduling as schools are considering make-up days when teams were originally committed to play. Trenton Boys Finish Runner-Up At Gallatin Tourney Again For the past four years, the Gallatin Tournament - at least on the boys’ side - has had a shadow cast over it by the Winston Redbirds. Saturday marked the fourth-straight tournament title for the Redbirds at the event, but not only did Winston’s streak go on, the Trenton High School boys basketball team had the unceremonious streak of being the championship opponent for Winston live on as well. Trenton was never in this year’s contest, however, as the Bulldogs fell behind 21-2 in the opening frame and never recovered, finishing second at the tournament for the fourth year in a row after a 59-23 loss.
Trenton’s offense was missing throughout the contest as the Bulldogs struggled with turnovers all night. Winston was able to convert points out of Trenton’s miscues and the Redbirds shot the ball well from the field as well. It all added up to a lopsided loss for the Bulldogs, whose 23 points were the fewest Trenton has scored against Winston in the last four championship meetings. “You have to give (Winston) a ton of credit,” Trenton Head Coach Jeremy Austin said. “They are an outstanding basketball team. They came out and hit shots and we did not respond real well. We’re disappointed in second, we wanted to win the tour-
nament, but more than that, we didn’t want to get third. We wanted to have our chance to play for a championship and we did that. I’m proud of the boys. They worked hard to get that opportunity.” Winston also defeated Trenton in the third-place game in 2014, making this the fifth-straight win for the Redbirds over the Bulldogs. Trenton last defeated Winston in 2013 when the Bulldogs topped Winston 62-44 in the semifinals on the way to the Gallatin Tournament championship - Trenton’s last boys title in the tournament. Saturday’s meeting saw Trenton paced by five points by Dalton Burchett. Max McNabb and Jaren
Whitney each had four and Dylan Harris and Carson Burchett each scored three points. Isaac Harris and Royce Jackson each scored two points to round out the team’s total. vs. GALLATIN On Friday night, Trenton advanced to its fourth-straight tournament championship with a 53-46 victory over the host school. Whitney led Trenton with 13 points in the semifinal win and was flanked by Isaac Harris, who had 11. Radcliff and Dylan Harris each had 10 points and McNabb added nine. “Overall, we showed some good improvement,” Austin said. “In the game against Gallatin, we were not

very consistent or smooth, but we proved that we have a lot of guys who can step up when we have to have them. All five of our starters had good offensive and defensive nights. What they did is just kind of take turns on who was going to have the breakout quarter or half quarter or something. It made us look pretty sharp. When we needed those guys to do it, we did it. Ideally, though, we will get to the point to where we have more than one or two of those guys playing well at the same time.” Dylan Harris was the lone Bulldog named to the all-tournament team. Trenton’s overall record moved to 22 on the season.

The Trenton Middle School girls basketball teams dropped two games with Putnam County on Thursday at home. The A team lost 28-8 while the B team fell 29-11. Over the past four seasons, the gym at Gallatin High School has come to feel like home for the Trenton High School girls basketball team. Between the Gallatin Tournament and games against Gallatin, Trenton is 14-0 on that court in the last four years combined. Trenton tacked on the last two wins in that streak over the weekend, defeating Braymer 65-21 in the semifinals on Friday before bludgeoning the host Gallatin Bulldogs 57-19 on Saturday to claim the fourth-straight Gallatin Tournament title for Trenton. Gallatin has been the championship opponent for Trenton in each of the four title games and the margin of victory in the championship has grown every season since Trenton topped Gallatin by 14 points in the championship game four years earlier. “It’s special for this (senior) group that they have won this tournament all four years of their high school career,” Trenton Head Coach Brian Upton said. “I thought we played excellent team defense all game.” Trenton’s defense suffocated Gallatin, collecting 21 steals in the championship tilt. The host school netted nine points in the first quarter - they would score just nine more points the rest of the way. Ainsley Tolson, who was named the Gallatin Tournament MVP, led Trenton in the championship with 18 points and four steals. Trenton would also get six points and three steals from Salem Croy and six points , six rebounds and three steals from Sidney Lynch. Lexi Whitaker had four points and four assists and McKayla Blackburn and Taylor Richman rounded out the team’s total with two points each.

the win. The Bulldogs picked up 25 steals in the win. Braymer scored just six points in the first quarter, but added 10 in the second. Trenton responded with a 28-2 run in the third quarter to end any hopes Braymer may have had in the game. “We didn’t shoot the ball all that well, especially through the first half,” Upton said. “But scoring came around in the second half, especially in the third quarter.” Moore had 19 points, six rebounds and three steals to lead Trenton and Tolson added 15 points and seven assists. Hurley followed with 12 points, five assists and eight steals and Croy had 11 points and six steals. Trenton also got four points from Richman and two each from Blackburn and Sidney Lynch. “Sidney did a great job on (Braymer’s) Jasmine Taylor in the second half,” Upton said. “She only allowed (Taylor) to score two of her 12 points for the game in the second half. “Offensively, we had balanced scoring and had 19 assists on 27 made baskets. The nice thing about this team is that they are unselfish and are willing to make the extra pass to move from a good shot to a great shot.” In the three games at the Gallatin Tournament, Trenton outscored their opponents a combined 200-50. The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Marceline to take on the Tigers at 6 p.m. The boys matchup will follow.

Trenton Goes 2-1 In Cameron The Trenton High School wrestling team’s first action of the 2018-2019 season went about as well as could be expected. Trenton was at the Cameron Quad on Thursday night, jumping up a class size to take on traditional powerhouse Cameron before padding the win column with a couple of lopsided victories over shorthanded Albany and MidBuchanan. Trenton’s first dual was with the Dragons, who defeated Trenton 43-30. In matches contested on the mat, however, Trenton held the upper hand, winning five of nine matchups. It was the Bulldogs’ open weights at 106, 120 and 126 that yielded 18 points toward Cameron’s total that was the difference maker. After the open weights and Trenton’s Thomas Lovell being pinned at 113, the Bulldogs were in a 24-0 hole right off the bat. But Brice Gibler picked up an 8-3 decision win at 132 that got the Bulldogs on the board. After Dakota Wendt lost by fall at 138 and Payden McCullough lost by a 13-2 major decision at 145, Trenton finally hit its stride at 152. Freshman Kaden Owen scored a win by fall at 152 and the win was followed by a 3-0 decision win for Trenton’s Tyler Siemer at 160 and a win by fall from Noah Lewis at 170. After Mark Trump lost by a slim 4-3 decision at 182 and Caleb Johnson was pinned at 195, Jadan Whitney scored a win by forfeit at 220 and Jarvis Collis pinned his opponent at 285 to give the Bulldogs a strong finish to the dual, though one that came up just short of springing an upset of the host Dragons. “We had a great opening night in Cameron,� Trenton Head Coach Charlie Bacon said. “We ended up winning six matches while Cameron won five. Brice Gibler at 132 really got the ball rolling for us, picking up a huge win against a quality kid. After Brice, our freshmen stepped up in a big way. Kaden Owen went out and got the pin against Tristin Brown in the third period at 152 and Tyler Siemer went out at 160 and picked up a 3-0 victory against a quality opponent. I was super proud of the way these two freshmen handled themselves in their high school wrestling debut. “At 170, Noah Lewis kept the ball rolling with a huge pin over Keegan Reynolds. Once Noah settled down and relaxed a little, he really stepped up to pick up a big win for us. Jarvis
Sports Briefs... TMS Travels To Maysville Five members of the Trenton Middle School wrestling team traveled to Maysville on Thursday night to take on Carrollton, Lawson and the host school. Hunter McAtee came home with a 3-0 record while Sam Gibson and Coleman Griffin finished the night at 2-0. Charlie Riley had a 1-1 record and Brayden Clause came away with a 1-2 mark. The wrestling team will host the Trenton Quad on Monday night. Maysville, Lawson and Gallatin will be at the TMS for a 5:30 p.m. matchup.

It was a really exciting dual and if we would have had a few more spots filled in the lineup it would have been even better.� Trenton picked up a 57-18 win over Albany, which had six open weights in its lineup, and a 54-18 win over MidBuchanan, which was dealing with nine open weights due to a state final four run in football. Wendt (138) had Trenton’s first win on the mat against Albany and McCullough (145) followed with a pin in just 16 seconds. Owen (152), Whitney (220) and Collis (285) all won by fall against Albany while Lovell was pinned at 113 for the Bulldogs’ lone loss on the mat of the dual. Against Mid-Buchanan, only four matches were contested on the mat. Lewis (170) and Siemer (160) each won by fall while Lovell (113) and Collis (285) were pinned. “The other two duals were pretty short due to opens,� Bacon said. “But once again, Tyler Siemer and Noah Lewis picked up solid wins for us in the Mid-Buch dual. In the Albany dual, Payden McCullough looked really good picking up the fall in 16 seconds. Dakota Wendt also got his first varsity win as a Bulldog. Kaden Owen, Jadan Whitney, who only got one match tonight, and Jarvis Collis ended our night with three pins. It was a great night.� Trenton established a 2-1 record to start the season at the quad. GIRLS Trenton’s girls team made its debut, with the three members seeing action in one dual at the quad and taking on a loaded Cameron team. With only three girls to Cameron’s nine, the Bulldogs didn’t stand a chance as a team, falling 4212 officially. But Trenton did win two of the three matches contested on the mat. Teresa Yoder picked up a win by fall at 131, the first win for the first-year team. Libby Fewins would follow suit, winning by fall at 167. Ann Airey rounded out the Trenton contingent, losing by fall at 152. “The girls dual was just as good as the boys action,� Bacon said. “Senior Teresa Yoder led the way, locking up a cradle against her opponent and securing the pin at 131. Teresa got the first victory for the Trenton girls wrestling team and she did it in tremendous fashion. Libby Fewins followed suit in the second match of the dual, picking up a pin over her opponent. Airey was the third Lady Bulldog to take the mat for us and wrestled a really good match, but got caught in the end. I am so proud of all three of these young ladies and to see the excitement they had after their matches was priceless.� MARCELINE TOURNEY Trenton’s first foray into tournament competition did not go as well as the seasonopening quad in Cameron as the Bulldogs had a tough day at the Marceline Tournament on Saturday. Trenton did not win an individual title at the event with Whitney’s runner-up finish at 195 being Trenton’s top finish. He was 3-1 overall at the event, with his lone loss coming to Trevor Bodine of Centralia. Behind Whitney, Lewis was 1-3, placing fourth at 170, Trump was 0-3 at 182, Siemer was 0-5 at 160, Owen was 1-4 at 152 and Lovell was 0-5 at 113. Trenton wrestlers in B pool action included Gibler, who was 3-1 and third at 132 B; McCullough, who was 1-2 at 138 B; Wendt, who was 1-1 and second at 145B; and Caleb Johnson, who was 2-2 and fourth at 182B. In girls action, Airey was 31 and second at 152 and Yoder was 2-2 and third at 131. “It was a tough day at the Marceline Tournament,� Bacon said. “After looking really good in the first dual on Thursday night at Cameron, I felt like we took a couple steps back this weekend. Jadan Whitney placed second in the A pool. He had two really tough matches - one he lost and the other was won in overtime. “I thought Brice Gibler had a solid day with a 3-1 record in the B pool along with some of our other underclassmen like Caleb Johnson, who went 2-2 in the B Pool. Kaden Owen and Tyler Siemer both faced some of the best in the state in their weight classes, which can be very frustrating for freshmen and I feel like the weekend will give them some motivation for improving every day. Noah Lewis also had a tough day in the A pool with a 1-3 record. “On the girls side I thought we looked good. Teresa Yoder placed third with a 2-2 record and Ann Airey placed second with a 3-1 record. I was happy with the improvement with the two girls even throughout the day.� Trenton’s grapplers will return to the mat on Tuesday, traveling to Gallatin for action. First matches are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

POWER POINTS OFFICIAL RULES 1. Object of the game is to amass as many of the 136 weekly points as you can. Simply review the week’s schedule of games, listed on entry form, and decide which game you are SUREST of picking a winner in. Write the name of your projected winner on the 16-point line, and so on down to the 1point line, which game you figure to be a tossup. Next, fill in Tiebreaker 1, the total points scored by both teams in the week’s designated game. If this step fails to produce a winner, the judges will apply Tiebreaker 2, total offensive yardage from scrimmage in this game. If a winner still doesn’t emerge, a drawing will be held among those contestants still tied. Decisions of the judges are final. The contestant from the participating newspapers who tallies the most of the 136 possible points – or who survives any needed Tiebreaker procedure – will win the Grand Prize of either $1,000 or $500 depending on whether he/she has recorded a perfect score, including Tiebreakers. 2. Any entry form that does not contain a legible name, address, etc., will be disqualified. 3. Entries that fail to forecast a winner from each and every game will be disqualified, as will entries that fail to distinguish between the Jets and Giants of New York and other similarsounding team names. 4. No points are awarded on tie games or in case any game is not played for any reason during its scheduled week. 5. Entering POWER POINTS constitutes permission by contestant for his or her name and photograph to be used for news and reasonable promotional purposes at no charge. 6. Employees of this newspaper and their immediate families are ineligible to participate. 7. Any inquiry about or protest of weekly results must be made by noon on the Friday following the announcement of winners. 8. No purchase necessary. Facsimile game entry forms will be accepted. WINTER WEATHER Each year, the district faces many challenges in dealing with winter weather. At Trenton R-9 we have several policies and procedures to keep the winter season a safe and successful one for our students, staff, parents, and patrons. There is always the chance of dismissing classes because of inclement weather. This means there is no school for the day, and usually comes with snow, ice, or extreme cold temperatures.The other options the district has to battle the elements are late starts and early dismissals. In each case, depending on the situation, students will attend school for part of the day. Transportation factors usually dictate these options, and the district and Apple Bus Company have to decide the best way to get kids to and from school in a safe manor. Extracurricular activities also play a role in the decisions made concerning inclement weather, and the student’s safety is always the first priority when deciding to hold games, contests, and practices after school hours. There are also things that the parents of the district can do to help battle the forces of nature during the winter season. Please dress your children according to the weather, and weather forecast. Warm, layered clothing goes a long way while waiting for the bus, or out on the playground. The following is a list of guidelines to follow for inclement weather season. If you have any
questions, feel free to call a building secretary, or the district office. Have a safe and warm holiday and winter season and Go Bulldogs. 1. Announcements concerning cancellations, early outs, late starts, and/or the use of hard surface bus routes will be made locally through KTTN, the Trenton Republican-Times, @TrentonBulldogs twitter, Facebook, Bulldog Alerts (text), and the Trenton R-9 App for mobile devices. When time allows, announcements can also be found on Kansas City channels 4 and 5. 2. In the event of a late start, everything for grades K-12 is on a two hour delay. School will begin at 10 a.m. and bus stops will be two hours later than normal. On days with a late start, there will be no breakfast served. 3. On early out days, there will be no after-school activities. Early out dismissals for weather usually happen from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.and the district will provide transportation. 4. The preschool schedule will vary. On late start days, there will be no morning sessions of preschool, but afternoon sessions will meet. If playgroup is planned for a late start day, it will meet at 10:30 a.m. On early out days, there will be no afternoon sessions of preschool. 5. In the event the district utilizes hard surface bus routes, they are available on the district website.

Wright Memorial Hospital held its Living Nativity Thursday night, with over 250 visitors taking in the scenes held outside the hospital as well as enjoying warm drinks and treats inside the cafeteria.
Four Arrested At Galt Residence Last Week Four persons staying at a residence at Galt were arrested last week, according to information provided by Grundy County Sheriff Rodney Herring. According to Sheriff Herring, his office received information from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office that a pair of wanted subjects were possibly staying in Spickard, however, an investigation revealed that the information was outdated and they had moved on. On Nov. 30, the GCSO received additional information that the wanted subjects were staying in Galt. The GCSO, assisted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, went to the residence and arrested Franklin Keith Corum, 54 of Galt; Katie Lynn Corum, 23, Des Moines, IA; Sara Kay Sparks, 25, Carthage; and Jeffrey Jearl Spicer, Jr., 42, also of Carthage. Franklin Corum was arrested on a warrant from Clay County for contempt of court, with bond set at $3,938.91 cash only, while Katie
Corum was arrested on two Sullivan County warrants for operating a motor vehicle on the highway without a valid license, failing to register a motor vehicle and having no insurance, with bond set at $150 cash as well as a warrant for unlawful use of drug paraphernalia, which has a bond of $680 cash only. The Carthage residents whom Jasper County was seeking included Ms. Sparks, whose warrant was for possession of a controlled substance except 35 grams or less of marijuana, which has a $3,000 cash-only bond. She also faces a parole violation warrant on a previous Grundy County charge of non-support, which has no bond. Spicer, the other person whom Jasper County had been seeking, was wanted for failing to register as a sex offender, which carries a $1,000 cash-only bond. He also has a parole violation warrant on a previous Clay County charge of failing to register as a sex offender, with no bond on that charge.

COMMUNITY Retired School Personnel Meet The Grundy County Retired School Personnel met on Nov. 21 at Dino’s Diner in Trenton. Fourteen members and three guests, Harlene Dougan and Linda and Gene Anderson from the Mercer County Retired Teachers group, were present as Ruth Ann Shipps led the pledge to the U.S. flag to open the meeting. Larry Dannar gave the opening prayer. President Ron Hurst introduced Brenda Thorne and Connie Olmstead, who presented a program on the “Festival of Trees� held on Nov. 23 at the Rock Barn. The “Festival of Trees� is a major fundraiser which supports the activities of disabled individuals in the county with this being the 11th year for the event. It begins with a holiday parade followed by a variety of activities at the Rock Barn. It culminates with a live auction of donated items. A recap of the Region 1 meeting co-hosted by the Grundy County Retired School Personnel and Mercer County Retired Teachers was provided. It was noted that 75 members attended the Region 1 MRTA meeting held in Trenton on Oct. 15 with “Peace and Love with Region 1 MRTA� being the theme. Sandy White was recognized as the Region 1 Distinguished Retiree. Andrew County, DC United, Livingston County and Nodaway
County were recognized as Region 1 Units of Excellence. Power Point presentations were provided by five Region 1 committee chairs. Additional speakers included MRTA President, Deborah Ingram, PSRS/PEERS representative Dearld Snider, Mark Iglehart from Forrest T. Jones Insurance, MRTA board member, Fred Price, and Jim Kreider, MRTA Executive Director. Linda and Gene Anderson presented the program “Living and Teaching in the Bush Country of Alaska� and displayed artifacts collected from the area where they taught. Bev Bosley read a poem “As We Look Back� to honor the memory of Donalyn Crowley. DEATHS Thomas Virgil Brown Longtime Trenton educator and author Thomas Virgil Brown died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018, in Trenton of natural causes. He was 94. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday Dec. 5, 2018, at the First Baptist Church in Trenton. The body will be cremated following the service with future inurnment at Resthaven Memorial Gardens of Trenton. Open visitation will begin on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018 at Whitaker-Eads Funeral Home in Trenton. Mr. Brown, Tom to his family and many friends, was born Aug. 9, 1924, on his parents’ farmstead just north of Melbourne in Harrison County, the son of Thomas Armfield Brown, a state legislator, and Dora M. Brown, nee Gardner, a homemaker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Thomas Alden Brown, five sisters, including Emma Ruth Brown and Eva Jane Maxwell, and one brother. Survivors include his wife, Sarah Joe Brown, nee Alden, of the home; a son, Anthony J. Brown (Venus), of Maryville; and a niece, Marsha Jane Maxwell of Marshall. Tom and Sarah were married Aug. 11, 1947, and celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary last summer. Mr. Brown, in his own words, lived an “idyllic life� as a boy, when his days were filled with hunting, trapping, fishing, working cattle, raising pigs and horseback riding. He was a good athlete and played basketball for Gilman City High School, where he graduated in 1942, shortly before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps after the United States entered World War II. As a Marine, Mr. Brown perfected his already considerable marksmanship skills and qualified as a high-speed code operator. His subsequent service with the storied 6th Marine Division, which battled the Imperial Japanese Army in the Pacific Theater, was — there is no other word — heroic. A member of a combat communications squad, Mr. Brown took part in the invasions of Kwajalein and Eniwetok in the Marshall Islands and also saw action on Guadalcanal and Guam. Near the end of the war he braved horrific fighting — sometimes hand-to-hand — during the epic struggle for Okinawa, one of the war’s bloodiest battles. Immediately following the war, Mr. Brown was sent by the Marines to Tsingtao, China, where he participated in the formal surrender of a major Japanese army. By war’s end, Mr. Brown, now a corporal, had received four battle stars as well as unit citations issued by President republican-times.com

After gaining his honorable discharge, Mr. Brown returned to north Missouri, where he worked briefly in a milk plant and as a reporter for a newspaper in Chillicothe. Following his marriage to Sarah, he studied social science, history and journalism at what is now Truman State University in Kirksville, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1949 and a master’s degree in political science in 1962. Mr. Brown began his education career in Fayette before being hired to teach history at Trenton High School. A few years later he was named an instructor of history and political science at Trenton Junior College, since retitled North Central Missouri College. During his years with the college, which lasted until his retirement, Mr. Brown, widely acknowledged by peers and students alike as a master teacher, completed a graduate studies program in AfricanAmerican history at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, and served briefly on the staff of U.S. Congressman Jerry Litton in Washington, D.C. A prolific writer, he authored or co-authored three books: “A Grundy County Pictorial History�; “Better Than They Knew, a history of North Central Missouri College�; and “Me ’n’ Joe,� a slightly fictionalized memoir of his wartime experiences. Out of uniform, and having learned how to play the guitar and piano as a youth, Mr. Brown became an enthusiastic amateur folk musician and performer who was noted for presenting songs and stories related to Missouri River steamboats and north Missouri coal mines. Beyond his professional, scholarly and musical pursuits, Mr. Brown was active in civic affairs, serving three terms on the Trenton City Council. On other fronts, in the 1960s, he was an assistant scoutmaster for Trenton’s Troop 99 of the Boy Scouts of America and tapped for membership in Mic-O-Say, the honor camping Society of the BSA’s Pony Express Council. Central to his life from boyhood was a deep Christian
Anna L. Garrison faith expressed by decadeslong service as an ordained deacon for Melbourne Baptist Church. A Sunday school teacher for many years, Mr. Brown was a popular lay preacher who was often invited to fill pulpits or perform sacred music both at Melbourne and other Southern Baptist churches across northern Missouri. Throughout a long, busy and useful life, however, Mr. Brown’s signal accomplishment was probably his devotion and commitment to people coping with cognitive and developmental disabilities, work that proceeded from his determination to provide an exceptional quality of life for his eldest son, Thomas Alden Brown, who was afflicted with Down syndrome. Both Tom and Sarah were leading activists on behalf of the mentally retarded at the state and national levels, and Mr. Brown played a key role in crafting Senate Bill 40, legislation that created local property taxes, revenue from which is used to maintain group homes, sheltered workshops and other programs and services. Additionally Mr. Brown was a longtime member of the state Protective and Advocacy Council for the Developmentally Disabled and three-time president of the Higginsville State School and Hospital Parents’ Association, which he molded into a politically powerful lobby on behalf of those who, in his own often-repeated words, “cannot speak for themselves.� During this time, Mr. Brown led the Retardation Association of Missouri, where he was a tireless champion of those living in institutions and group homes. His efforts on behalf of developmentally challenged Missourians ultimately led to his appointment to the Missouri Mental Health Commission by Gov. Christopher Bond. Throughout these years of activism, which spanned five decades from the 1950s to the 1990s, Mr. Brown liked to counter politicians and bureaucrats opposed to increased funding and higher levels of service for the developmentally disabled with what became his personal battle cry for kindness, compassion and common-sense care: “Happiness first. All else follows.� Memorial donations are suggested to either the Grundy County Learning Center or the Sarah Joe Brown and Thomas V. Anna L. Garrison a 71-yearold resident of Humphreys, died on Saturday morning, Dec. 1, 2018 at Sunnyview Nursing Home in Trenton. The body was cremated under the direction Slater Funeral Home of Trenton. A celebration of life will be held in April 2019. Mrs. Garrison was born June 7, 1947 at Trenton, the daughter of Raymond and Goldie Burkeybile Snidow. She attended Trenton schools and before retiring was employed at ConAgra at Milan. She enjoyed baking, cooking, making homemade noodles and springtime. Her favorite flower was a red rose. She had a great sense of humor and especially loved all of her family. She was married at Trenton
on May 7, 1971 to John P. Garrison, who survives of the home. She is also survived by two daughters, Shelly Milner and her husband, Tim and Kelly Hines and her husband, James, all of Trenton; five grandchildren, Tiffany Norman, Molly Norman, Angela Woodley and her husband, Junior, Eric Hines and Logan Garrison; and three great-grandchildren, Chase Whitson, Izabella Woodley and Emery Cornelison. She was preceded in death by her parents; one infant halfsister; one infant half-brother; one son, Phillip Garrison; and one grandson, Joshua Garrison. Mary D. Porter Funeral services for Mary D. Porter were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2018 at the Slater Funeral Home in Trenton with Rev. Ron Ratliff officiating. Mrs. Porter, a 74-year-old resident of Trenton, died on Sunday evening, Nov. 25, 2018 at Saint Luke’s on the Plaza in Kansas City.

Rotary District 6040 Deputy Governor David McGaughey presented the program at Thursday’s Trenton Rotary Club. Don Purkapile was the program chairman. McGaughey presented information about the Rotary Foundation, which provides funding for projects within Rotary districts made up of over 35,000 clubs worldwide. McGaughey said Rotary continues to be one of the top organizations when it comes to the percentage of funds spent from donations it receives. Donations to Rotary are invested and, after a three-year period, a portion of those funds go back to districts for their use. District 6040, of which Trenton is a member, has 34 of its 56-club total that are currently receiving around $60,000 in district grants for various projects while another 12 clubs have received global grants for projects that reach out internationally. Projects have included teaching people to read, elimination of polio, providing clean water and sanitation, saving mothers and children and promoting peace throughout the world. Rotarians have several ways to make donations to the foundation, which recognizes individuals making at least a $1,000 donation with a Paul Harris Fellow designation. Paul Harris was the founder of Rotary. Multiple recognitions are also offered based on the amount of donations made. District 6040 currently has a program in which the district offers a 500-point match (representing a $500 contribution) for every $500 donation made, resulting in designation as a Paul Harris Fellow. McGaughey said several members have taken advantage of this offer, resulting in additional donations. During the business meeting, final sign-up was made for the Dec. 13 Christmas party, which will be held at The Space in downtown Trenton. It was announced the Trenton Rotary Club would provide volunteers for Holiday Hoops on Dec. 27, which will replace the regular club meeting, and a sign-up sheet will be distributed at the Dec. 6 meeting. Members also signed up to ring the bell for the Salvation Army on Dec. 7 and 14. The Dec. 6 meeting program will be the new executive director of the CAPNCM, Dr. Christopher Small, as well as organizers of the Holly Jolly Jog being held on Dec. 15 to raise funds to build fresh water wells in Swaziland.
WorldStrides Trip To Spain Being Planned Trenton resident Amy Currie, working through WorldStrides, is now offering international trips, with a group set to leave on May 28 for Barcelona, Spain. The group will be visiting Spain, France, Monaco and Italy during the trip and persons can follow them through the Facebook page "European Trip 2019 - Trenton, MO." A meeting for persons who would be inter-
ested in being a part of this trip is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12 in Room 10 at Trenton High School. The trip is open to all area high school students entering grades 10 through 12 in 2018 as well as college students and parents. Dear Annie: This may be a new one for you, but I'm finding it frustrating, to say the least. My husband, who is a retired European-trained chef, does most of the cooking now that we are both retired. For years, I've used zip-lock bags for storing leftovers. Over the past two years, he's insisted on buying a kind that has to be lined up perfectly to be pressed together. I hate these bags, and he knows it. I have a hard time getting them to close properly. He refuses to use the ones I prefer. I end up putting things in "my" bags if I can't close "his." What message is he sending?! I am so beyond frustrated! -- Why?! Dear Why: The person to put that question to is your husband. But I can tell you that when you and your partner are fighting about something as small as zip-lock bags, there are bigger issues at hand. This bag issue may just be the lightning rod for all the emotional static that's built up over the past two years -- or however long you've both been retired, as it's normal for couples to experience some friction when adjusting to retirement. You're around each other a lot more
often, with all the routines you've been following for 30plus years suddenly upended. Take a step back together to look at the big picture of your relationship. Are there things you haven't been communicating? Are there needs that aren't being met -- perhaps for more togetherness or more alone time? Once you're on the same page with the big things, the little things tend to become a lot less significant. Dear Annie: I want your opinion. I started going to one church, and then I switched to another church of the same denomination because it's much closer to my house. One friend who is a member of the first church tries to tell me it's wrong to go anywhere other than the first church. She called me three times in one day about it. She is making me resent her. United Technologies splits United Technologies, a nearly century-old conglomerate with roots in the early days of aviation, is reversing course and splitting into three separate businesses after prodding from investors. Farmington, Connecticut-based UT says it will break its aerospace, Otis elevators and Carrier air conditioning businesses into three independently traded stocks by 2020. CEO Gregory J. Hayes said that after the change, “each of these businesses will have a greater opportunity to build on their histories of shaping industries as independent companies.”
UT began life as United Aircraft in 1934, after Bill Boeing and Pratt & Whitney joined forces with early aviation pioneer Chance Vought. It bought Otis Elevator in 1975 and Carrier in 1983. Income has been steady for each unit over the last several years, with jets and aerospace components making up the bulk of the company’s revenue. Rene Lipsch, senior credit officer at Moody’s Investors Service, said that each of the separate businesses could benefit from greater operating discipline, smaller organizations and independent capital allocation decisions. I had to respond to the letter from "Disappointed Aunt," whose nephew did not acknowledge her or her husband after losing a football game. I was saddened by family dynamics that had two adult family members standing there "staring at" a young man near tears who had just suffered what was for him a deeply disappointing loss. What held them back from giving him a warm hug right then and telling him they loved watching him play? When they just "headed for the car," he probably thought they were too disgusted with him to speak to him. As a grandmother who has attended many loved ones' sporting events, win or lose, it is my responsibility to step forward and offer unconditional support and love. NEW ARRIVALS Lea Marie Sheffield Brittany Roberts and Dennis Sheffield of Trenton are the parents of a 6 pound, 7 ounce baby girl, born at 1:22 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, 2018. The baby was 19 1/2 inches long and was named Lea Marie Sheffield. She is the couple’s first child. Maternal grandparents are Diana and Bob Roberts of Independence. Paternal grandparents are Leo Sheffield and Cherri Nocks of Trenton.
