The Trenton FFA Chapter left for Indianapolis, IN on Oct. 23 for the 91st National FFA Convention. While traveling to Indianapolis, members had the opportunity to tour the ADM Headquarters in Decatur, IL. During the tour, members learned about ADM’s food development department and their grain marketing department. Members also took a tour of a Bayer seed production processing facility in central Indiana. Trenton FFA attended the opening general session and heard from keynote speaker Kyle Scheele as well as a national officer retiring address. On the final day of the trip, members attended the career show and expo, where they visited with many colleges, agribusinesses and agricultural organizations. One of the highlights of the trip was the entertainment. Members attended a Garth Brooks concert and a hypnotist show. All in all, it was a very rewarding trip that helped teach students about careers in agriculture and provided leadership opportunities in FFA. At Rissler Elementary, we are fortunate to have an amazing special education department. This is due to the dedication of our special education teachers, KelLeigh Bryant, Tristan Dugan, Abbye Michael and Mary Kate Stewart. These teachers go above and beyond for their students every day. Allow me to introduce the special education staff at the Rissler Elementary. Abbye Michael is a special education teacher for our fourth grade students. This is her fourth year as a special education teacher. Prior to teaching she worked as a para for 11 years at Trenton R-9. She and her husband, Shane and their three children, Addie, Zane and Evan, reside in Trenton. Outside of school Mrs. Michael enjoys spending time with her family and reading. Mrs. Michael states that her goal for her students is “to believe in themselves.” A favorite education experience is “having students come up to me that have already graduated, to tell me thank you, and that they couldn't have done it without me.” Mrs. Michael’s favorite quote comes from Rita Pierson, “Every child deserves a champion; an adult who will never give up on them who understands the power of connection and insist they become the best they can possibly be.” Mary Kate Stewart is a K-4 special education teacher. is Mrs. Stewart’s sixth year working at Trenton R-9. She and her husband, Ethan, son, Cameron and two dogs Moose and Bering, reside in Trenton. Outside of work Mrs. Stewart enjoys reading, scrapbooking, fishing and traveling. When asked why she loves being an employee at Trenton R-9, Mrs. Stewart states “I love how supportive the staff members are at school. We work together to help all of our students become successful.” Mrs. Stewart found her love for working with students with disabilities after volunteering at home for adults with developmental disabilities in high school. Her goal for students in her classroom is “to become successful contributing members of society.” Tristan Dugan is a K-2 special education teacher. This is Ms. Dugan’s first year teaching. She obtained her degree in education from William Penn University. Ms. Dugan enjoys reading, fishing and four wheeler riding. She states “I like working for the Trenton school district because I believe in the education system I was raised in. I’m honored to be able to contribute to a community that has given me so much throughout my life. I remember as a child I had lost a family member and it was a very difficult time for me. This is her first year in her teaching career. Ms. Bryant obtained her bachelor’s degree in education from Northwest State University, currently working on her master’s degree in special education and did her student teaching last spring at Trenton R-9. Outside of work, Ms. Bryant enjoys painting and walking her dog. Her favorite quote comes from Oscar Wilde “With freedom, books, flowers, and the moon, who could not be happy?" Ms. Bryant enjoys working at Rissler because of the “family like atmosphere.” Mrs. Bryant states “a goal I have for my students is for them to become independent thinkers and learners.” Our special education team wouldn’t be complete without the amazing support from our paraprofessionals: Ronda Brown, Kim Holloway, Tammy Leafgreen, Andrew Pauley, Jessica Roy, Illisha Slater and Amber Sprague. The teachers and paraprofessionals go above and beyond to support our students with special needs. Their compassion and grace with students and staff members, make them a valuable asset to Rissler Elementary. Dear Annie: A former coworker of my husband's invited us to his son's wedding. We received the usual "save the date" card one year prior to the ceremony. For the whole year, he asked us whether we would be attending every other week. About six months before the wedding, my husband's contract was not renewed, and he was temporarily unemployed. The co-worker still kept asking us whether we would be coming, and when we received the actual invitation in the mail, he called practically every day to ask us to send in the card to let him know we would be attending and what our dinner selections were. He then called and asked us whether we wanted to stay overnight in one of the rooms he had reserved for guests at a local hotel. This was two weeks before the wedding. After we declined the room invitation, he called us back and told us that his wife didn't think we should come to the wedding because my husband was unemployed and it would be a hardship for us to come. He still calls our house as if nothing ever happened. I was

Months of incessant phone calls and confirmations and then a last-minute cancellation after all that back-and-forth -this man sounds like a ball of nervous energy, wound up tighter than an eight-day clock. His wife doesn't sound much better. Though I understand your taking offense, I wouldn't take it personally. This has everything to do with them and nothing to do with you two. If your husband wishes to continue talking to them, that's his choice (though I would advise him that any plans he and this man make should be entered into the datebook with pencil, not ink). You're not obligated to be friends with them. But there's also no point in staying angry with them. Let off that steam before it burns you. tify why she made such an egregious error in judgment. With that being said, I see it as an opportunity to address a real issue happening in the educational system that you lightly touched on. Many children are inappropriately diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder for a variety of reasons. Parents, schools and doctors alike believe that better diagnostic tools have opened the floodgates in identifying students who need medication. This is far from the truth. For example, when a child can't read, that begins to cause anxiety, and it is often misinterpreted as ADHD. The majority of children experiencing symptoms at school are doing so because of a language-based learning disability. About 1 in 5 students have such a disability. Dyslexia is the most common one. The bottom line is that parents need to request a complete and thorough neuropsychological examination that is conducted by a team that has experience assessing language-based learning disabilities. This is only the tip of the iceberg, but it is a step in the right direction. Often there is something else going on that doesn't require medication. -Dawn W. Dear Dawn: Well said. Thanks for writing.

More room for improvement

Higher mortgage rates and steadily rising prices have pumped the brakes on the U.S. housing market in recent months. The trend has stirred concerns among some investors that home improvement spending could also slow, dimming the earnings prospects for Home Depot and Lowe’s. A report last month by Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies projected that annual spending growth on home-improvement and repair will fall next year, from 7.5 percent last quarter to 6.6 percent in the third quarter of 2019. While the trend isn’t

favorable for either company, investors shouldn’t overestimate the impact, says Robin Diedrich, senior analyst at Edward Jones. Around 75 to 80 percent of the retailers’ business comes from remodeling that isn’t tied to home sales, according to Diedrich’s estimates. Existing homeowners, many having locked in ultra-low mortgage rates, have more incentive to invest in upgrading their homes. “The bigger risk long-term is if interest rates rise enough to slow down the economy in general,” Diedrich says. “On a relative basis, the homeimprovement space looks to us as a place to invest.”
