Chiefs Relish Run To NFL Title KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Fifty years later, Jan Stenerud still remembers just about every detail from the Super Bowl. The longtime Kansas City Chiefs kicker remembers that they were almost two-touchdown underdogs to the Minnesota Vikings, whose fearsome defense line carried the nickname “The Purple People Eaters.” He remembers that the weather wasn't very good in New Orleans, and that the week leading up to the game was spent listening to tornado sirens. The tarp used to cover the field at Tulane Stadium was filled with holes, leaving patches of the turf a muddy quagmire. “When we had to kick extra points,” Stenerud recalled, “I told our coach, Hank Stram, that we had to move the ball to the side a bit because there was a big mud hole where I wanted to kick from. It was a real mess.” More than anything else, though, the Hall of Fame kicker remembers never once thinking that it would take one of the original AFL franchises a full five decades before it returned to the championship game. “How could you?” said Stenerud, who also was a member of the team that lost to the Green Bay Packers in the first Super Bowl. “No, I never thought about it. It's a long time. For me, it doesn't seem as long as it does for young people. You think about the next game — ‘Let me play.’ You don't think about history at the time.” As the Chiefs prepare to play the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Stenerud finds himself reflecting on history quite a bit these days. So many of his good friends and close teammates never lived to see the team return to the championship game, and many others are in failing health. Stram died 15 years ago this summer, and the team's beloved founder Lamar Hunt passed away the following year. Thousands of fans lived their entire lives without seeing the Chiefs in a Super Bowl. Only the Lions and the Jets have played more seasons since they appeared in the championship game. “To lose a Super Bowl is devastating. You have to explain that forever,” Stenerud told The Associated Press this week. “When we won the game, there was one guy who kept bugging me about the warm-up jacket I had on. It turned out the guy was Pat O'Brien, who had played Knute Rockne in ‘Knute Rockne, All American.’ I just See Chiefs, Page 3

Pirates Roll Over Missouri Valley’s JV MARK OF EXCELLENCE GARY HAAG WRESTLING TOURNAMENT
Eight Pirates Reach Double Figures In Win NORTH CENTRAL 121 MO VALLEY JV 73
There wasn’t much expectation that Friday’s North Central Missouri College-Missouri Valley College junior varsity match-up would be much of a game. The end result validated the lack of enthusiasm for the ill-fated contest. The number-one ranked Pirates rolled to their 17th victory of the season, dispatching the visiting Vikings 121-73 at the Ketcham Community Center in Trenton.

If the game wasn’t over at halftime when the Pirates led 59-38, the 62 points North Central racked up in the second half certainly did the trick. North Central’s 121 points was its second-highest total of the season and the points seemed to come from everywhere. The Pirates placed eight different players in double figures in the contest with TJ Babikir leading the charge with 20 points, four steals and four assists. Behind Babikir, Quinan Rieves had 18 points and nine rebounds and Marty Jackson went for 15 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Atavian Butler had 13 points and Damarius Houston, Jeramy Shaw and Jackson Andrews all finished with 11 points each. Jonathan Richmond had 10 points and eight rebounds to round out North Central’s double-digit performers. Rayonte Childs finished with seven points, seven rebounds and four steals. The Pirates, now 17-1 on the season, travel to Beatrice, NE  to face Southeast Community College tonight (Thursday) at 7 o’clock and play host to St. Louis Community College on Saturday, tipping off at 3 p.m.
Trump Brings Home First Place Medal At Tourney Mark Trump is making the most of his senior season with the Trenton High School wrestling team. After qualifying for state last year he wants a state medal. Entering Saturday’s Gary Haag Wrestling Tournament in Brookfield, Trump had a 20-6 record on the season and he was the seventh-ranked 182pounder in the state at the Class 1 level. He was leading by example for a talented freshmen group of wrestlers he shares a roster with. But as good as Trump’s senior campaign had been, Saturday’s performance was on another level. Trump ran a 4-0 record at the tournament, collecting the 182-pound championship with a victory over the sixth-ranked wrestler in the state at that weight. “Mark looked as good as he ever has (at the tournament), Trenton coach Charlie Bacon said. “Mark found his take-

downs and really started to open up on his feet, which helped him control the matches he was in. His performance is exactly what you want to see from a kid this time of the year. I really feel like he is putting things together. Trump opened 3-0 with two wins by fall and a victory by an 11-8 decision to set up a battle of ranked wrestlers for the title. Trump faced off with Gallatin’s Gage Wright, ranked sixth statewide, and came away with a 4-2 decision win to seal the championship. In addition to Trump, Trenton had two other wrestlers finish in the top two spots of their respective weight divisions. Freshmen Hunter McAtee (106) and Sam Gibson (170) both wound up as runners-up with 3-1 and 4-1 records at the event, respectively. McAtee went 3-1 with all three wins coming by fall. His lone loss came by a 6-2 decision to Brayden Dubes of Centralia - ranked second in the state at 106 pounds. McAtee is ranked fourth at the weight. “Hunter’s second-place finish was a close one, Bacon said. “He wrestled pretty good all day and his only loss was to the Dubes kid of Centralia who is the only person to hand Hunter a loss throughout the season. We will see him again in the district tournament, which gives him a good goal to shoot for.
Gibson collected three wins by fall and another by a 6-4 decision. His lone loss came by fall to Blair Oaks’ Kyler Griep. “I was also really happy with Sam’s performance at 170. Placing second in a tournament like this should be a huge confidence booster. Kaden Owen (145), Noah Lewis (160) and Caleb Johnson (220) were all third at their respective weights. Owen was 3-2 with two wins by fall and another via medical forfeit. Lewis was 3-2 as well also scoring two wins by fall and another by medical forfeit. Both Owen and Lewis received medical forfeit victories over state-ranked foes. “Kaden finished third at 145 and picked up a really good win over a Blair Oaks opponent, Bacon said. “Kaden really put together a good match against him and wrestled the way I know he can. Noah also had a pretty good day and is still finding his groove and getting some rust off after a long layoff from injury. Johnson was 3-2 as well, getting one win by fall and two from major decision scores of 11-1 and 14-2. Both of Johnson’s losses came to stateranked opponents. He was pinned by Sam Lynn of Centralia, ranked sixth at 220, and Fisher Nixdorf of Hamilton, ranked eighth. “Johnson placed third at 220 and really had a pretty good

Griffin was 2-3 while Gibler and Chambers were both 1-3 on the day. Caylub Tyler was 0-3 at 120. Allen Airey was also in action for Trenton, competing in the 195-pound B pool. Airey went 1-1, pinning his teammate Gabe Gamble to place second in the pool. Gamble was 0-2 in the three-person division. “It was a tough tournament with some of the toughest teams in the state, Bacon said. “Centralia, Blair Oaks and Gallatin being some of the top. We looked a little sluggish after a week off of school and practice. We are looking forward to getting in the wrestling room and preparing for Chillicothe on Tuesday. The Hornets will be Trenton’s opponent in dual action tonight (Tuesday) in Chillicothe. Action is scheduled to begin at 5 o’clock. Chillicothe features a lineup with three ranked wrestlers at the Class 2 level. Sheldon Rader (106) is fourth, Dawson Wheeler (160) is sixth and Isaac Washburn (220) is fourth.

remember the total, total elation when you win, and I also remember that I was thrilled as could be, and I remember all the people who had taken a chance on us." By the 1969 season, the Chiefs had a roster filled with veterans — quarterback Len Dawson, tight end Fred Arbanas and offensive lineman Ed Budde — who chose to play in the AFL when it was largely considered a secondtier league. Many of the players had followed the franchise from Dallas, where it was known as the Texans. They played with a chip on their shoulder, both because they lost that initial Super Bowl and because nobody expected them to win three years later. They were the underdogs when they went to New York to play the reigning champion Jets, and they had lost twice to Oakland in the regular season before beating the Raiders to reach the Super Bowl. It was no surprise that the Chiefs were such heavy underdogs against the Vikings, who were led by coach Bud Grant and their ferocious defense. They had mowed through their schedule and beaten the Rams and the Browns, giving them the chance to play the Chiefs for the final championship before the AFL and NFL officially became one. “Nobody gave us a chance, Dawson told The AP a few years ago, when he stepped away from the broadcast booth after a long second career with the Chiefs. “Everybody thought the Vikings were going to win. But the Chiefs were playing their best football of the season down the stretch, in part because Dawson was finally healthy after missing several games with a knee injury. Third-string quarterback Mike Livingston had kept them afloat by leading the Chiefs on a five-game win streak, but Dawson's return not only marked the return of one of football's best quarterbacks but also instilled in the team a profound sense of confidence that it could beat anybody. For his part, Dawson took it upon himself to shoulder the burden of finally delivering a title. His longtime roommate, Johnny Robinson, told The AP
after the Super Bowl that Dawson had “aged five years this week. “You looked into his face, Robinson recalled, “and you knew it wasn't the same Len Dawson. Much of the anxiety dissipated by halftime, though. Mike Garrett ran for a touchdown and Stenerud kicked three first-half field goals to send Kansas City into the locker room with a 16-0 lead. The Vikings finally scored late in the third quarter, but Dawson answered with a 46yard touchdown pass that all but put the game away. The quarterback who had put so much pressure on himself wound up being the MVP. “I can't take any credit, Dawson said afterward. “It was the team, not me. They were fired up. They were ready. Dawson and many of the Chiefs from that championship team remain close to the organization, returning for anniversaries and other celebrations. Nine members of the team eventually made it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Dawson made it as both a quarterback and broadcaster — Dan Dierdorf and Frank Gifford are the only others so honored. When the Chiefs beat the Tennessee Titans in the AFC championship game to end their long and maddening Super Bowl drought, it was Hall of Fame linebacker Bobby Bell who stood on the stage as part of the trophy presentation. “It was great to have Bobby up there. He's special, current Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “They had some great talent there on that football team, and it was obvious by the championship. He's around, as a lot of players are. We encourage that. I like having the guys here. They bring great history and energy to the guys. They've got a fellowship with the young guys and educate them on how great the city is and so on. It's fun to have them here. Maybe that's true. But it's more fun to give them a longawaited trip back to the Super Bowl. “It's been tremendously exciting, Stenerud said. “It looks like a real solid football team to me.

Dear Annie: I'm a little chagrined to admit that we can't come up with a solution to this situation by ourselves, but we are really stumped. We have a friend who has stayed over with us twice. The first time, he brought two others with him, which worked out OK. The second time, he stayed for four days, ate everything in the fridge, as well as meals, and didn't leave the last day until 9 p.m. Also annoying is the fact that he is an in-your-face talker. This probably sounds a lot worse than I mean it to, because he is a good-hearted person and he did leave some money for all the food he'd eaten. But since the second visit, he has invited himself over a few times. We have made excuses, such as "we'll be away" and "we're just too busy at this time," but that hurts his feelings. We truly would like to keep this friendship at a less intimate level but can't figure out how to get that across without breaking his heart. He just sent us another self-invitation yesterday, planning ahead to the spring. How

can we tell him no? Thanks for your help. -- Stumped in Vermont Dear Stumped: Don't be so chagrined that you haven't come up with a solution yet. As playwright Titus Maccius Plautus wrote, "no guest is so welcome in a friend's house that he will not become a nuisance after three days" -- and that was in 200 B.C. The question of what to do when good friends become bad houseguests has been stumping people for millenniums. I feel that your friend needs absolute directness, because you've generously dropped hints to no avail. Tell him that you'd love to spend time with him but he'll need to find somewhere else to stay. If your having boundaries "breaks his heart," that's his issue. Dear Annie: I'm considering not leaving an inheritance for my children or grandchildren. I am nearing 70 and have done so much for them, e.g., buying cars and helping pay for roofs, clothes, tires and so many other things. My daughter has always been a handful

and told me herself that she's always done the opposite of anything I have suggested. There's always been an underlying resentment from her. Whenever there has been a misunderstanding with my daughter, it ends up being the "whole family" who is under attack. She has just plain worn me out. I know that the norm is for parents to leave their money to their children and grandchildren. How am I supposed to feel? What am I supposed to do? I do know for sure that this feels like elder abuse. -- Weary Dear Weary: If you worry so much about how you're supposed to feel, you'll never have a chance to learn how you actually feel. Allow yourself to experience your emotions as they come to you. I'd encourage you to see a counselor to help with this process. And I implore you not to make any decisions about your estate under duress. You aren't obligated to leave anything to your children or grandchildren. They might even be better off; I hear from many people who have fallen out with family members over estate settlement. The most important thing is that you look after your own health and well-being now.

Climate of risk
Climate issues were one of the main talking points at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, this week, but a survey of CEOs shows they are not even ranked among the top ten threats to business growth. Financial services firm PwC says that its survey shows that executives view climate change and environmental issues as the 11th biggest threat to companies’ growth. Though up one spot from the same survey a year ago, climate-related issues lag far behind other concerns such as over-regulation, which is the number 1

worry. Other concerns in the top 10 include trade conflicts, lack of skills among workers and populism in politics. According to the report, 24% of CEOs are “extremely concerned” about climate-related issues, compared with 38% for over-regulation. CEOs and politicians like U.S. President Donald Trump faced pressure in Davos from environmental groups and activists like Swedish teen Greta Thunberg to respond to the climate emergency. The meeting followed the revelation that the last decade was the hottest ever recorded on Earth.
