The national press needs more agricultural journalists. That’s not for my benefit, but for all who benefit from farming but may not know it. Last week, listening to XM radio mews, a lack of farm news hit me. Big-press talkers concluded that a drastic drop in stock markets was over after the recent Tweet from the White House. Commentators said there’s no more threat of U.S. recession ahead. Earlier I’d heard a Mid-West radio call-in show ask farmers about their outlooks. Farmers still fear recession. They know about lost China trade. Once again U.S. tariffs on China’s products brought swift retaliation against our farms. China won’t buy any U.S. farm products. That hits Missouri hard. In the past decade Missourians built China as a trade partner. The same week, an MU teleconference reported on WASDE. That’s a quarterly report on World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates. We have lots of pork being produced and stocks of soybeans stack up. Those Missouri products were of high interest in China. They consume lots in their diets. John Kruse. MU Extension economist, showed what happens to pork prices when
China said “No,� Three days of sharp drops like he’d never seen before. The same happened to soybeans. The shock to U.S. stock markets was widely reported in national media. I didn’t see such reporting on farm markets. Nearer to home, recent reports from Kansas City and St. Louis Federal Reserve Banks tell of rising concerns about farm loans. Half the loans seem on shaky grounds. Drops in farm income have huge impacts. That’s where our food comes from. No one escapes that impact. We all eat. Not all countries have that luxury. Much Middle East turmoil stems from loss of farming. Prolonged drought causing food shortages brought civil unrest. Unemployed farmers took up weapons to provide for their families. That led to strife that spread. Agriculture builds a foundation of solid civil society. We’ve not told that story. Let’s not learn the hard way. While farm reporting to non-farm national audience lacks for now, the word gets out when unrest hits stock markets. This weekend, the Wall Street Journal reports impact of lost Chinese trade. But, they back into the farm side of that story.
The news lede tells the impact on “U.S. manufacturing sector.� Wouldn’t you know: When incomes drop, farmers stop buying tractors and combines? The headline: “Deere Says Farmers Scaling Back.� A subhead tells: "The maker of farm tractors scales back its forecast for the year.� Ah, so farming does hit the stock market. Radio reporters hadn't made that connection. Farming affects a U.S. recession. Far down in the WSJ story, the reporter brought up the reason for the threat. U.S. tariffs on China goods sent to American brought swift retaliation. They stopped buying all goods from U.S. farmers. A supporting WSJ factoid: “The move cancelled purchase of nearly 500 million metric tons of U.S.-grown soybeans.� It adds that an earlier bad move on tariffs by the U.S. lowered China’s farm imports from us by 20 percent. Our president did not learn from his previous tariff mistake on China. This time they responded with a bigger whack. Our leader thinks China pays tariffs. Other U.S. Presidents learned long ago the futility of tariffs. They backfire on us. With new tariffs on China goods, we pay the tariff with higher prices. That raises prices of goods in box stores and local merchants where rural residents buy their needs. So, with lower farm incomes and higher price, doesn’t that boost stress in rural Missouri?
