Imagine this, it is the last day of school and everyone is so excited for summer break. Some children are excited to go to the pool, socialize with friends, sleep in, and go on vacation. Livestock kids, however, are excited to put hard work into their animals and show off their prized possession at various county fairs all throughout the summer. Now imagine, it is the end of July, summer is reaching an end, and the county fair is beginning. All of the kids in town are excited to go to the NCM Fair and enjoy the rides, see friends, go to the nightly events, and enjoy the last few days of summer before having to go back to school. Then, there are the few kids that are excited to go to the fair to watch the livestock shows, see all the animals, or exhibit their prized animals that they worked hard on all summer. Showing livestock benefits kids in many ways and helps prepare them for the workforce in the future. According to India youth livestock members, “Kids that show livestock have improved problem solving skills and decision making skills, along with enhanced people skills.� Here are 9 ways in which showing livestock can help prepare youth for the future: 1. Economics - Learning to follow the markets, set a budget, and find a good show animal while staying within the budget can prepare the showman for a future of financial stability. 2. Composition & Appearance - The composition of the animal is how well or poorly the animal is made. Appearance is how the animal looks overall. Youth exhibitors have to learn how to not only present themselves well, but also the animal they are showing. 3. Feeding - No matter how livestock is fed, nutrition needs to come first. This allows the showman to learn responsibility as the animal depends on them for nearly everything. 4. Handling- Understanding your livestock needs can help you to better care for them. Caring for another individual can help the showman be a better parent and or caregiver. 5. Care and Compassion - Any livestock producer or show kid should have some knowledge of animal health care or have access to a mentor or veterinarian.This skill can help a person be more analytical of people and their needs. 6. Records - Keeping records of each animal will be very helpful and beneficial in the end. 7. Social skills - With showing livestock you meet individuals from all over the United States and may even get opportunities in the future. 8. Determination - When showing livestock, it is important for you to remember to stay determined and true to your goals. 9. Purpose - Learning the purpose of each and every animal you show is very important for the individuals herd in the future.

COW BREEDING DESIRES HYBRID VIGOR; NOT SO MUCH IN VIRAL MICROBE HERDS My science curiosity perked up on news of a virus in China. There, 100 people a day died from pneumonia-like disease. Now, news reports 142 died in the last 24 hours. That’s an ultra-hybridvigor bug. I learned pneumonia last year. My doctor said I’d pushed my limits. I had a bad cold, with flu-like symptoms. Then, it worsened. When I could hardly breath, I went to Doc. He said I’d almost waited too long. “Old men and pneumonia don’t go together� he said. I’d had a flu-shot, so knew I was protected. But, when my virus was tested, it came back as not the flu of that winter. It took two months for full recovery. My hard-earned advice: Don’t wait go to your doctor to be tested. I proved I can’t self-diagnoses. Doctors and nurses know far more about getting me well than I do. Just, trust the medics. I should know pneumonia, as my great-grandfather Elijah Dailey died of it. That didn’t start with flu, as he was first kicked in the chest by a mule. He’d walked into a barn stall behind a mule
without shouting. A startled mule planted two hind feet in his chest. He died a week later of pneumonia. When I did the Missouri Mule History Project, I was told this safety tip: “Never walk in behind a mule in a barn without announcing yourself.� I first heard that in Howard County. The mule owner took me to show off his team. On entering the barn, he slammed the door open against the farm side. Made me jump. The mules also. We didn’t get kicked. Back to today: I try to keep up on Coronovirus. It will come visiting, I’m sure. There’s no known cure, yet. But the NY Times says 80 studies are under way. Chinese are testing 2,000year-old herbal remedies. More scientific is an enzyme treatment for HIV that offers control of SARS, the previous big threat from China. That’s a doozy of a name: “Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.� Quick help needed. By Feb. 16 we have 68,800 cases worldwide. Symptoms are what I had last year: fever, cough and respiratory distress. That means shortness of breath. I tell colleagues: “Go see your
Doc earlier than later.� My farm interest rose with news that the current virus, now called Covid-19, came from animals. In China I say that’s likely swine. Already China the world’s largest pork producer, lost half its herd to African Swine Fever. We see shifting populations of viruses every year. Flu bugs evolve. In beef cow herds we like to take advantage of crossbreeding of different breeds. That brings heterosis, or hybrid vigor. Now MU Extension reproduction specialists urge crossbreeding to gain heterosis. That adds vigor, plus better genetics. I see that happen in microbes. But, we do not need more vigorous pneumonia. We may have it accidently. I repeat my advice to army veterans who fired guns without any hearing protection. That’s M-1 rifles to field artillery. I blew my ears away long ago, and then grew increasingly deaf. I urge any veteran in the same shape to go to nearest Veterans Administration and apply for hearing aids. I held back because of rumors of impossible paperwork. It’s bureaucratic; but worthwhile. It took six months of being turned down, before I went to HST VA Hospital in Columbia. I found advocates. A DAV volunteer and a VA audiologist wrote the right words. My new aids take learning to use but they change my life. Send heterosis ideas to duanedailey7@gmail.com.
