Think of the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the following few words: careers in agriculture. I asked a sample of my peers and here are a few of the responses I received:

• Farmer • Animal Scientist • Crop Inspector As you can see, jobs that are associated directly to a farm are among the most popular answers. If I were asked that same question prior to taking any agriculture education classes in high school, I probably would have had a similar response; however, if I were asked that question now, I could respond with careers such as food scientists, biochemists, and even surgeons. Although those careers might not directly relate to farming, those careers are still associated with the agriculture industry. I will explain how all of those uncommon careers tie into agriculture:

•Food scientists - Food scientists are responsible for conjuring up some of our favorite recipes and developing new flavors of products such as ice cream. How might this tie into agriculture? Those same food scientists must use the crops that are produced on farms every day: wheat, corn, cows’ milk, and so on. Without the farms’ ability to produce those crops, we could not enjoy our favorite foods.
•Biochemists - Biochemists use crops and other substances to make the pharmaceuticals that save lives every day. For example, the Periwinkle Plant and the Pacific Yew Tree, along with a few others, are some of the main components in chemotherapy drugs. Biochemists are also using pig and cow insulin to provide diabetics with the proper insulin needed to carry on with their daily lives. Lifeflower ampules are used to help treat stroke victims to save them from paralysis. As it can be seen, plants and animals are used in many of the essential medications in local pharmacies and hospitals. •Surgeons - We have all heard of human organ donation, but have you ever heard of animal organs being donated to humans? In reality the use of animal organs has saved the lives of many humans. For example, doctors have used pig valves to replace defective valves for those whose hearts are not functioning properly. Clearly, this aspect of agriculture in medicine has saved many lives.

In conclusion, agriculture is the foundation for the world we live in today. Although we may not realize it, the agriculture industry is inclusive of many jobs that aren’t directly on the family farm, such as careers in the medical and food production industries. Instead of agriculture being all about cows, sows, and plows, it also includes the salad you ate for lunch the other day, the new medication that is helping to fight off a deadly disease, and the cow heart valve that is keeping your next door neighbors heart pumping. In fact, did you know that only 11% of American careers in agriculture are on farms? This means that the other 89% of careers in the agriculture industry are in the supply chain. So, the next time you hear the words ‘careers in agriculture’, what will be the first thing that comes to your mind?

NOSTALGIA REMINDS ME OF WARMER END TO PROLONGED MISSOURI WINTERS In days of yore, I went to Spring instead of it coming to me. In February I flew to Arizona, leaving 18F degrees and arriving in Phoenix at 68F. I removed winter wear on an airport shuttle to Mesa, my mother ’s winter home among cacti. Missouri winters were worse back then, I recall. I left after Ag Science Week the first week of February when commodity groups and farm organizations got together at MU. College of Ag alums came back to mingle. A high point was Ag Day Barbecue, emceed by Cordell Tindall, farm editor and jokester. It was at the then new Trowbridge Livestock Center. The week exhausted news writers in the agricultural editors office. That was a different era, when ag school and extension could work together. Teaching through media was easier. There was no distracting “social media.� I now see it as “anti-social media,� where folks do their own thing without regard to facts. Faculty and administrators want to tell stories
their own way: No worry about content or readingease. Academic and science jargon flow in what newspaper editors call PR puke. The editors’ office taught media writing. Back then media meant newspapers, magazines, radio and TV. I think folks read more then, at least they read stories longer than 288 characters. Stories used verbs, not fluffy adjectives. Oh, the power of nostalgia! Back to spring. No matter what ground hogs saw, we’ll see more harsh winter. And, I won’t be on the cactus trail. Long ago, I resolved to never go on an airplane again. Life will be simpler if I drive or go by train. Close to home provides plenty to write. I’m reinforced at ShowMe-Select Heifer meetings. Beef farmers say they read stories in newspapers and magazines. Maybe I can extend my retirement career. There’s still an audience waiting to read understandable stories. I recall our then dean tell farmers the college was going digital. All stories and guides would be on their

computers. He learned a quick lesson from his audience. They assured him they wanted their stories on paper. Today, even young farmers tell me they want print. Our web sites are too confusing. Too much junk to wade through. They get cut off, unlike a newspaper in hand. Back to traveling, it’s not that it isn’t educational. When I visited mom, we drove a few miles south of her house to find big dairy farms. Miles of Holstein cows lined up in confinement. Those were between fields of irrigated alfalfa. That was before we worried about climate. I didn’t know huge dairies would become our source of milk, trucked in. A story last week told of over 800 dairy farms lost in Wisconsin last year. A former MU dairy specialist tells he’s visited a 7,000-cow dairy near his old home there. Times change. When I started writing extension stories, small dairy herds gave beginning farmers a start. Milk cows took lots of labor and little cash. Now our president says we must buy bigger tractors and get more land. His destruction of free foreign trade for farmers ends. He says.
