Thank You The Church Women United of Grundy County-2109 wish to thank the people who continued to work and support the thrift store. The customers continue to come and most are careful of the items in the store. Your thoughtfulness is appreciated. New faces have come to work on days items are marked and that means new ideas come. Have you noticed a few changes? We have, and it helps to try new ideas. After Christmas, we will work on December 26 and open on December 27 and 28. The following week, we will work (restock) on January 2 and be open on January 3 and 4. As of the end of November, we have returned $61,935.00 to the area. A few of those who have received our help are: Community Food Pantry, Christmas For Families, Kiwanis Club Christmas, Hubble Home, Salvation Army-Christmas, Fire Pup Programs, Trenton Ministerial Alliance. There are also scholarships for the Nursing Program and, in rare cases, some individuals.

“The best things in life are free,� I’ve heard. I found it true at the Kirksville Livestock Symposium. It’s a proven extension meeting, with free food and free lessons attracting crowds. Some said: “Biggest crowd ever.� Winter weather helps determine crowd size. Some recall when we went in ice storms more than once. For me, seeking stories, it’s frustrating. All day, eight tracks going at once. When in a beef session, I want to be in forage. There an MU veterinarian tells: “Perilous Pastures and Fatal Feedstuffs.� That’s worth hearing. But, I hung with beef, slipping out to check sheep, meat goats and horses. All were in packed rooms. Oh no, I missed stock dogs. There’s a semester’s worth of learning in one day. Absolute star was Temple Grandin from Colorado State University. She’s a world unto herself, leading beef talks with “Improving Cattle Stockmanship.� This was her third time in Kirksville, so, I kinda knew where she’d go. Every herd owner should hear her, again and again. Grandin advocates for those with autism. She grew
up with what some think a handicap. She finds it helps understand livestock. She has changed cattle handling in feed yards and slaughter plants. Industry found they profit from smooth handling of stock. Calm cattle will wreck less equipment and hurt fewer workers. I grew up on a farm where we needed her teaching. Dad gave us stout hickory sticks for driving cattle. Oops, no way, says Grandin. “Don’t poke cattle in the butt.� (She used another word.) When you move calves down an alley, back up. Get out of their flight zone. Definitely, no electric prods. Leave prods hanging on the wall, she said. There are times for prods. If you have a truckload of calves and one is down. You can’t go in and pick it up, so use an electric prod to make it jump up. Prod use just teaches a steer to kick the head off the next person coming up behind. Make handling pleasant for calves. They won’t balk or kick next time. Grandin advises making the first time through new equipment a rewarding event. “If you dehorn a calf on its first time in a squeeze chute, it won't want to go in
that chute again. When first using a chute, or cattle trailer, give animals a feed reward. Next time, they’ll go right in. That’s just a bit of her stockmanship advice. Oh yes! No heel-nipping dogs around cattle facilities. She knows trained dogs work well in pastures. The big change for Grandin was her Symposium keynote talk. It wasn’t on cattle, but on raising kids. Over pampering kids creates a work force that can’t work. She says give kids, when 10 to 12 years old, real jobs. Make them responsible. Let them learn to use their hands and tools. Fix things and go on working. She told how too many kids are shunted into “special education.� If gradeschool math bores a kid, that one may be ready for college math. Give them new challenges. Kids with “special needs� may have special talents. She implied too many college graduates can’t work. There are places for people with “special talents.� She told of people who succeeded even though they had “problems� such as Thomas Edison. He made lot of things that worked. Her stories on work drew casual talk later. Former farm boys recall their jobs when 12 years old. I was feeding livestock, every day, at that age. Early jobs, not cellphone twiddling, gave life-long learning. Send your thoughts to DaileyD@missouri.edu
