WINNING SPIRIT!

“

Gage (Sperry) will be the first kid to ever play four years of high school football from Gilman, as far as I know. He’s a kid who went from playing quarterback as a freshman to fighting for a spot the last few years to starting at linebacker for us this year. I’m just really proud of him and how he has stuck it out through some pretty lean years for those first couple of years. With James (Norton), you just can’t have enough numbers. He’s a young guy and he is green, but he has a great attitude and we are glad to have him. We had a new coaching staff last year, new energy and new ideas and the kids really bought into that well. We are continuing to have kids come out and they want to compete. That’s the biggest thing, having kids in here who want to work and want to go compete. - Head Coach Chase Roberts

he Trenton Bulldogs are at a crossroads as dawn breaks on the 2018 high school football season – the 116th autumn that will see the Black and Gold do battle on the gridiron. In one direction, Trenton faces the challenges that come with rebuilding. The Bulldogs will have to replace a two-year starter at quarterback, a generational talent on the line, their top receiver and half of its backfield. And, that’s just on the offensive side of the ball. The defense will see three new starters along the defensive line, must replace the second and third leading tacklers from a year ago and patch a secondary that graduated a pair of alldistrict players. But in the other direction is opportunity. The Grand River Conference – in its third year of being a 16-team super conference with half of the schools playing 11-man football and the other participating in 8-man – has never been more open on the 11-man side, under the current format. Princeton and Gallatin suffered key losses along with Trenton while some teams in the middle of the pack or at the bottom will return nearly their entire varsity roster this season with a year of experience behind their respective young squads. Over the next three months, Trenton will attempt to navigate a winding path between the two thoroughfares, thrusting new players into key positions while still aspiring to collect its second league title in three seasons. “The kids we lost last year were a very talented group,” Trenton Head Coach Brandon Boswell said. “But, I haven’t really thought, ‘who is going to replace Mason Owen? Who is going to replace Lathan Croy?’ Kids want to be their own team, so this year, this group of seniors view this as their team. They want to make this season their season.” Trenton was coming off a conference title going into last season, but things didn’t click for the Bulldogs, who returned most of their starters on both sides of the ball, outside of the glaring absences of Austin Burkeybile on offense and Connor Cotton on defense. Trenton stumbled to a 4-6 Continued On Page 4

Trenton Football 2018 record in 2017. A loss to Gallatin in week nine dropped Trenton from what would have been an outright runner-up finish in the league, to a tie for third “We’ve talked about getting back to the top of the conference and getting to where we want to be, Boswell said. “This group of seniors this year, they understand that we graduated a lot of starters from last

year. But, the way they look at it, they think ‘I’m just going to be me and do the best that I can and do my job.’ We’ve really had, I think so far, very good senior leadership. Should Trenton return to its championship status, it will likely be a result of a running game that will be the team’s strength in 2018. back and sits just under 100 yards away from breaking into the top-10 career rushing leaders in school history. He will be joined in the back field by Jadan Whitney, a bruising 200-pound fullback, as Trenton transitions to the split-back veer offense that new offensive coordinator Wes Croy will harken Trenton back to this year. Both were all-district players last season and Whitney was a third-team all-state selection as a linebacker. Behind that duo, Trenton has Mark Trump, another physical runner, and Matthew Sibbit, though the latter is nursing an injury and his status is uncertain for the beginning of the season. In spite of that, however, Trenton has good depth at the running back position. The backs should get plenty of room to run in the Grand River Conference as well, where Trenton’s line could be one of the biggest in the league. Trenton’s starting tackles – Carson Burchett and Hunter Trask – come in at 239 and 250 pounds respectively. Though the Bulldogs also have a frontline starter who comes in at just 152 pounds, the Bulldogs will have the ability to move their bigger players around to cause match-up problems for opposing defenses. “Size is nice, but you still have to be able to get off the ball, Croy said. “We always say speed and leverage, get off at a good pad level and block with technique, not just

Continued From Page 3 strength. When you get big kids that are athletic, that are willing to get low and go through the proper procedures, it’s a big bonus. We feel really good about the kids we have up front right now. Being able to run the ball will be especially important for Trenton, which will have junior Sam Schilling under center this year. Schilling served as a backup last year as a sophomore, but didn’t see much playing time. Even with starter Lathan Croy wounded entering the Princeton game, Schilling remained an emergency option as Croy made the start. “Sam Schilling is our quarterback, he’s an interesting character, Boswell said. “He is a very fun kid and even when he messes up, you get upset with him, but he will just do something to lighten the mood. Lathan was so serious, Sam and he are completely different. But, I think Sam has that confidence to put the team on his back if he needs to. The kid is a great competitor. It’s hard to envision Trenton equaling the 800-plus yards it gained through the air last year with Schilling under center this season, but Wes Croy believes the Bulldogs’ passing game will be more than just smoke and mirrors. “Sam has done a really nice job so far at quarterback, Croy said. “He has come along as quickly as any kid that I have had. He started at

leaders. I know we lost a lot of talent last year, but we have a lot back and I have the same expectations that we did going into last year. Starting in place of Smith under center will be Austin Kelly. Kelly, a junior, guided Princeton’s junior varsity team last season and saw some action on Friday nights when Princeton put away opponents early. He will most likely not end up being Andrew Smith 2.0, however, the Tigers are plenty comfortable with leaning on their new signal caller. “(Kelly’s) progression has been phenomenal, especially since his freshman year, Hotmer said. “He has been trained playing two full years of JV and he got a lot of varsity time last year. I think that his progression and his love for football have really made him who he is today as a quarterback. He has great confidence and he is a great leader for us. I think he sees the field really well and he understands football. I think a lot of people think he doesn’t have the arm or legs that Andrew had, but he is really, really smart and he understands what we are trying to do. I think it helps him, being in our system for a whole other year, to be able to help take over the reigns and keep the train moving. Last year Princeton lost its starting running back, plugged in another and continued to run roughshod over opponents. The Tigers hope they can do that again as the team must replace Berwanger, who was injured, and his replacement, Tanner

FALL SPORTS 2018

Coffman. “Cameron Jones has done a lot of work in the weight room and really shaped his body up to take on a running back position, Hotmer said. “He knew that in the off-season that’s what our plans were and his body has really transformed. He and Logan Dunkin, I think, will be the main workhorses to take over that role and try to fill the position. I have huge expectations for both of them. They are both great senior leaders, they are both captains and they both love football, so you certainly miss losing talent from last year, but these guys are ready to step up and keep it going. On the offensive and defensive lines, Princeton will miss Drew Daily and Logan Bates, but the Tigers do return three starters at the position. A new addition has also made an impact in practice and the Tigers should be one of the more solid teams in the conference up front. “Drew and Logan were great players and they started both ways, Hotmer said. “I don’t ever think you can replace them - their energy and their toughness was just something that was rare. But, we have three starters back and a new player who didn’t play last year. They are working really hard together and I think their communication is what is helping them succeed early on in practice. We are excited for it, they know they are going both ways and they are going to have to bring the energy.

The Tigers’ defense may be the team’s strongest unit this season as, unlike the offense, a majority of last year’s starters are returning. “This year with our defense, we have all of our linebackers back and half of our secondary back, Hotmer said. “So, we have a lot of experience, we just need to shore up our D-line. I’m expecting big things from our defense. Chief among the returning starters on the defensive side of the ball is linebacker Cam Hartley, who was arguably Princeton’s best player on the defense last year. “He is the heart of our defense, Hotmer said. He makes all of the calls. He is very experienced out there. He gets us right and makes all of the reads and he has always been one you can coach really hard too. He accepts good coaching and he lives it up. The prospects for a Princeton repeat as Grand River Conference champions, despite losing such a valuable part of its team at graduation last May, is still very much in play. Other top teams in the league lost valuable pieces as well. Both Gallatin, which was runner-up to Princeton a year ago, and Trenton, which finished in a tie for third place, will usher in new quarterbacks this season as well. Between that and young teams at the bottom progressing, Hotmer sees the league being pretty tight this season. “I’ve talked with our coaches and players and we know every week is going to be a dog fight, Hotmer

said. “There is no week where yo can just go in and say ‘well th team is playing a lot of freshmen. think the conference is going to b wide open. We have great coach and I think the talent is a lot mo leveled for every body. Our ki know that so we have to battle eve week. We have to keep our foc every week, do our job to have chance to win. I’m looking forwa to that. It’s going to be a fun cha lenge as a coach and a fun challeng that our kids have to accept. That what football is all about. You wa to go out and beat somebody at the best. I think the GRC is going to b a great conference to be a part this year with it being so level ta ent-wise. The Tigers open the seaso tonight, taking on the Mi Buchanan Dragons at home o Eddie Allen Field in Princeto Kickoff for the week-one clash scheduled for 7 o’clock.

ground zero and now getting to where we are, he has picked it up. He has a good football mind, he is athletic and he is throwing a really good ball right now. It’s tough when you are replacing a two-year starter at quarterback, but I feel really good right now. We don’t think we are ever going to be a team that people are going to say ‘oh my gosh we have to stop the pass’ about, but we also feel like we have the ability to take advantage of teams that sell out on the run. Boswell will remain in charge of the defensive squad, a post he took over last season. Trenton’s defense got off to a rocky start a year ago, but Boswell’s squad was locked in down the stretch. Trenton yielded just over 12 points per game in its last five regular season games. The Bulldogs are set up the middle with Carson Burchett and Trask anchoring the defensive tackle spots and Whitney, who led Trenton with 133 tackles a year ago, at middle linebacker. On the outside, however, things are somewhat in limbo. Avery Cooksey and Cole Schilling are both gone, leaving Trenton needing two defensive ends. Lathan Croy’s graduation vacates one outside linebacker spot and the other starting outside linebacker, Lucas Clark, also graduated. Hunter Dugan and Colton Colston were alldistrict players for Trenton a year ago and both graduated, leaving Trenton two more holes to fill in the secondary. Trump, Nick Wattenbarger and Dalton Burchett are the leading candidates to fill the two spots. Wattenbarger made a couple of spot starts at the position due to injury, but Boswell knows that group has some work to do to match last year’s ends. “We kind of have to tweak what we do defensively a little, Boswell said. “Defensive end is really where we have to shore things up. I think we have guys who can give us varsity reps on Friday night, but losing a kid like Cole Schilling hurts. That

FALL SPORTS 2018

kid was probably the most underrated kid I will ever coach. He was just a phenomenal football player that happened to be surrounded by other really talented kids. To try and get our current defensive ends up to where we were last year is going to take a lot of work. Whitney will direct the defense on the field, something that lets Boswell rest easy. Trenton’s defensive game plan has grown in intensity this year but the added complexities have done little to hinder the Bulldogs’ lone all-stater from a year ago. “Jadan is turning out to be one of the best players that I have ever coached, Boswell said. “He is extremely talented. He is just a very, very good football player. He has picked it all up and it’s just been amazing to see how much he understands the game. Just having him in the middle makes me feel really good. He is just kind of the anchor back there for us. Isaac Harris will get the call at one outside linebacker spot and Jaren Whitney, Jadan’s brother has vaulted into the other spot with an impressive offseason. A broken collar bone kept him from being a contributor a year ago, but the younger Whitney appears primed for a breakout season. In the secondary, Sam Schilling and Sibbit, assuming he is healthy, will hold down the safety spots for the time being. Radcliff and Nick Shields will take up the cornerback positions. With the graduation of some of the top quarterbacks in the conference, Trenton shouldn’t see as much passing as it did a year ago, but Boswell is confident in the athletic group he has in the secondary. Winning the GRC is Trenton’s first goal, but it could help vault them to another goal that has eluded the team since MSHSAA moved to the current format for district playoffs – hosting a district game. Trenton has tried in vain for six years now to get a home district game, but it hasn’t panned out. Until

that becomes a reality, Boswell isn’t looking much farther down the road. “I think those have to be our goals until we get there, Boswell said. “Just as a coach, those are things that I would really like to see. This elusive home playoff game drives me nuts that we can’t seem to get it. If we can get to seven or eight wins, I would think you could get into the top four. Winning the conference is super important. I think that is a

Page 5

building block and foundation for a program – winning conference titles. And, that goes a long way toward helping us get that home district game. Trenton opens the season tonight, traveling to Lathrop to take on the very Mules team that ended the Bulldogs’ season last year in the district tournament’s first round. Kickoff for the rematch is set for 7 p.m.

Trenton should have one of the bigger lines in the Grand River Conference this season.

The Return Of Wes Croy

On a hot July evening, the Trenton Bulldogs are on the practice field for team camp. It is early on the road to the 2018 season, but the excitement is already budding. Of the players and coaches on the field, though, one would be hard pressed to find someone having more fun than Wes Croy. The former Trenton High School head football coach – a Missouri Football Coaches Hall of Fame coach – is back in a coaching role for the Bulldogs for the first time in five years. Croy is serving as the team’s offensive coordinator this season under Head Coach Brandon Boswell. Croy’s energy is infectious as he works through drills with the Bulldog defensive backs. He jokes, he encourages, he coaches. “Oh, I’ve enjoyed it a lot, Croy said of his return. “I’m really thankful for the opportunity, thankful that Coach Boswell asked me and that the administration and the school board allowed me to come back. Croy stepped away as the program’s head coach following the 2013 season to focus on watching his kids play sports strictly as a parent while also taking up the mantle of athletic director at Trenton, a

position he continues to hold. Looking back, Croy has no regrets. He very much enjoyed watching his son Lathan’s playing career unfold at Trenton. But, even as things unfolded the way Croy wanted, the desire for coaching never ceased. “It’s something that I missed, Croy said. “Coaching has been a part of me for a long time and to not do it the last four years was not tough, but you always wanted to be out there. For me to be able to go back and hit the reset button and be a part of this has really been a great experience. I enjoy the kids and that’s probably what I missed the most, just the daily interaction with the players. To be able to do that again has been really special. Through Croy’s tenure as a head coach he put together some formidable backfields in his split-back veer offense. There was the backfield duo of DeAndre Vandevender and Scott Stevens, who helped Trenton reach the state quarterfinals in 2007. There was Clay Oneal and Keegan McGinness after that and, in Croy’s final year of coaching, he had a pair of young backs in Colton Neff and Travis Leeper who would go on to bridge the coaching transi-

Section 1 tion from himself to Boswell. In 2018, with the offensive reins back in hand, Croy hopes he has found a new dynamic duo in Jadan Whitney and Carson Radcliff. With Mark Trump’s play in the preseason, he may have a three-headed monster on his hands. “Whoever we put in there we expect to run the ball, Croy said. “Jadan and Carson have done a very nice job through camp this year and Mark Trump is another back who had a great camp up at Simpson College. So, I feel like we have a lot of capable backs and whoever we put in there, we expect them to run the ball well. Croy will be looking to heal an offense that was suspect at times last season. Trenton managed just 12 points in a loss to Gallatin last season, turning the ball over inside the red zone three times in that game – a 14-12 loss. In a 14-8 loss

to South Harrison, Trenton marched into the red zone on each of its final four possessions, needing just one score to at least tie the game and came away empty-handed on all four possessions. Those two losses most likely cost Trenton what would have been its first home district playoff game since MSHSAA went to its new tournament format in 2013. The Bulldogs did have offensive highlights last season, like rushing for 579 yards against Polo and scoring 46 or more points on three occasions. But, the Bulldogs needed consistency on the offensive side and Trenton hopes it’s found just that in Croy, who is optimistic that his classic veer offense can produce some results for Trenton in 2018. “Hopefully we can get some mileage out of the old dinosaur, he said.

tion from himself to Boswell.

“Hopefully we can get some mileage out of the old dinosaur, he said.

verything came together for the Princeton Tigers in 2017. Head Coach Thomas Hotmer’s rebuild came to fruition in the form of championships in both the Grand River Conference and Class 1, District 8. Just two years removed from a one-win season, Princeton reeled off 12 straight victories before the Tigers’ season burnt out in the state quarterfinals against East Buchanan. As the Tigers eye 2018, Princeton will look to defend its titles without a majority of the players who played crucial roles last season. Several players, including quarterback Andrew Smith, tight end Blaine Millburn and running back Calvin Berwanger, have moved on and are starting careers at the college level. That doesn’t mean Princeton will engage with a bare cupboard, though. The Tigers have some talented skill players back this season as they look to continue to be one of the top programs in the GRC. “One of the biggest things that (this year’s team) has experienced is having that success and getting to watch all of those kids last year and how hard they worked, Hotmer said. “We have 11 seniors again this year and a lot of them were huge parts of what we did last year. So, they have just carried on that great work ethic, what it takes to win and have been great

ground zero and now getting to where we are, he has picked it up.

Trenton should have one of the bigger lines in the Grand River Conference this season.

Page 13

said. “There is no week where you can just go in and say ‘well this team is playing a lot of freshmen.’ I think the conference is going to be wide open. We have great coaches and I think the talent is a lot more leveled for every body. Our kids know that so we have to battle every week. We have to keep our focus every week, do our job to have a chance to win. I’m looking forward to that. It’s going to be a fun challenge as a coach and a fun challenge that our kids have to accept. That’s what football is all about. You want to go out and beat somebody at their best. I think the GRC is going to be a great conference to be a part of this year with it being so level talent-wise. The Tigers open the season tonight, taking on the MidBuchanan Dragons at home on Eddie Allen Field in Princeton. Kickoff for the week-one clash is scheduled for 7 o’clock.

Coaches were asked to rank their seven Grand River Conference opponents 1-7. A first-place vote received seven points, second was six points, five for third and so on through one point for a seventh-place vote.

When the Grand River Conference realigned ahead of the 2016 season, the Republican-Times began conducting a preseason coaches poll. In year one of the experiment, three schools received first-place votes. Last year, only two schools garnered first-place votes. In 2018, five different schools have received at least one first-place vote, signalling that the coaches feel like this is the most wide open con-

to return its quarterback. Cody Wellar and the Purple and White Bulldogs appear poised to be right in the hunt as well. Gallatin has consistently out-performed the preseason projections, elevating to outright second place last season after being picked fifth in the preseason poll. Should the Red and Black Bulldogs top their ranking again this year, a conference title will certainly be in play. Milan also received a first-place vote in the poll. The Wildcats came on at the end of the year last season, much in the way Princeton did the season before. The Tigers parlayed that into a GRC championship and Milan will look to follow that blueprint this season with one of the more talented backfields in the league. Putnam County and Polo each have new coaches this season and Maysville appears to be a year away at least, with what will again be a young team. GRC play is slated to begin in week three for all teams.

ference race to date for the league in its current format. One key factor to the balance shown in the poll is that the teams at the top of the conference standings last year are all losing key pieces. Princeton, Trenton and Gallatin are all replacing quarterbacks that served as multi-year starters. Teams like Milan and Maysville were grooming young signalcallers last season and with a year of experience, those teams can only improve. Trenton sits atop the coaches poll for the third year in a row. The Bulldogs delivered as conference champions in 2016, but faltered in 2017 as Princeton, which received the second-most first-place votes last year, became the first team in the new-look GRC to run the tables. Both of those two teams are once again the preseason favorites according to the coaches, with a mere two points separating them in the poll. South Harrison, at third in the poll, is the only one of the top four teams in last year’s final standings

he Trenton Bulldogs are at a crossroads as dawn breaks on the 2018 high school football season – the 116th autumn that will see the Black and Gold do battle on the gridiron.

I

f there is a last gasp feel for the Trenton High School softball team, Head Coach John Cowling certainly isn’t showing it. Despite this, 2018 represents the final season in a Trenton uniform for a core group of five players who have powered the Bulldogs to a 70-10 record over the past three seasons. Pitcher Ainsley Tolson, catcher Salem Croy, outfielder Taylor Richman and infielders Mykah Hurley and Sidney Lynch are all seniors this year. While Trenton has always put a premium on winning - and will continue to do so - this season is as much about enjoying this final ride as it is about putting trophies in the display cases at the school. “Our expectations are to enjoy this season and to have a good time playing together, not only with this group of seniors, but the entire varsity group,” Cowling said. “They have spent a lot of time playing together, not

only during the school year, but during the summer as well. We want to make sure we take full advantage of every day with this group.” But winning and enjoyment go hand in hand and the Bulldogs certainly have all the necessities to make the former a common theme again in 2018. Trenton will look to bulldoze the Grand River Conference for a third-consecutive season and avenge a district title game loss that spelled the end of the 2017 campaign for the Bulldogs and denied the team a third-straight trip to the state playoffs. The first step to getting back to the state playoffs is shaking up the defense. Hurley will move from short stop to third base, allowing Maci Moore, a first team all-state outfielder last year, to move to short stop. Lexi Whitaker, who played third base last year, takes over in centerfield. “Mykah just has tremendously quick hands,”

Having two seasons (fall and spring) for a young program is great just because there is more playing time, more practice time and they are getting experience a lot faster than what some of the other younger programs are. Being a small school, our numbers are down right now with only 10 being out. The more practices and games we can get in the better off we are going to be. Out of the 10 there are four who have never played baseball before. They’re going to be expected to step in right away because you have to have nine on the field. They will learn relatively fast because they don’t have any other choice to sit back and watch, or anything like that. They are going to get playing time, they are going to get at bats and, hopefully, they pick it up quick and fill in and give us what we need out of them. - Head Coach Josh Lisle

Cowling said. “She is great playing the bunt and makes a lot of plays that most third basemen can’t make. We are moving Maci to short stop and on the left side, with those two, it’s going to be tough to get a base hit through.” Whitaker, probably the team’s fastest player, has taken well to centerfield through the team’s summer camp and the early practices. In addition to Whitaker’s speed, her arm strength will be a weapon for Trenton in the outfield as well. Both her and Richman, a left fielder who returns after losing half of last season to a leg injury, will be a threat to throw out runners looking to take extra bases. Richman’s return will be a big boost to the Bulldogs both defensively and offensively. In the early going, Richman appears to be right back where she was prior to the injury. “I see the player we had before the injury,” Cowling said. “I really don’t see much of a difference in the way she runs to the ball. Her arm is tremendous and she is hitting the ball as well, if not better, as she was last year.” With Moore and Hurley on the dirt and Whitaker and Richman behind them, Trenton’s defense on the left side would rival any other team in the state. To see action, however, opponents must put the ball in play against the battery of Tolson and Croy.

GOOD LUCK

FALL SPORTS 2018

Tolson, a first-team all-state pitcher last year, and Croy, a two-time all-state catcher, make up Trenton’s battery yet again. Tolson won’t give up many baserunners and the ones she does put on base won’t be a big threat to steal with Croy behind the dish. “Ainsley just doesn’t give up much hard contact,” Cowling said. “(Croy and Tolson) knowing each other and working together for so long now, though, they know each other inside and out. Salem knows where to put the glove for Ainsley to hit on every pitch. They are just in tune with each other.” With so much known for Trenton between the left side of the infield and the battery, the one question mark looms on the right side of the infield. First baseman Sidney Lynch is nursing an injury entering her senior season and her status for the start of the year is still up in the air. Should she not be able to go, Chandler Lynch, a Laredo import and a freshman, will slide over from second base, where she was set to take over for the now graduated Jayden Roeder. The move would pull right-fielder McKayla Blackburn in to second base and leaves right field up for grabs. “For a girl who just started playing first base in camp, Chandler is doing a great job,” Cowling said. “She is great at digging the ball out of the dirt and the one thing she just needs now is expe-

Morgan King

Page 3

rience. She was probably going to be our everyday second baseman until Sidney got hurt. McKayla played a great right field for us last year and is kind of re-learning second base as well. So, we are going to use practice and the jamboree to kind of get those girls ready for the Cameron Tournament in case Sidney isn’t able to play right away.” Two freshmen are battling for the right field job, should it be available at the start of the season. Teya Cooksey, from Pleasant View, and Gracyn Rongey are both in the mix. Offensively Trenton was a juggernaut at the plate until it came down to the end of the season. The Bulldogs were shutout in the regular season finale and scored just one run in the district championship game against Hamilton. “At times last year, I got lulled into it, I got talked into it - we relied too much on hitting the long ball,” Cowling said. “Not just hitting the ball over the fence, but hitting the ball into the gap. What we have to do is start to use this team’s athleticism more. We need to try to score runs in small ways, running the bases, bunting more and advancing runners. We have to be sure that we can do that so that when the bats aren’t clicking we can still score runs.” The Bulldogs will open the season with the Cameron Tournament on Aug. 24-25.

t has been seven years since Tammy Ockenfels stepped down as the Trenton High School girls tennis coach to focus on her own children’s athletic careers. But the timing couldn’t have worked out better as the graduation of her youngest coincided with Trenton’s need for a new tennis coach. Ockenfels guided Trenton to a district championship in 2011. The team she inherits is again coming off a district championship season, but the team fielded this year has a vastly different feel from last year’s squad, which was primarily made up of seniors with three years of varsity experience. Only Emma Gilham, who was Trenton’s number five player a year ago, and Elle Neal and Latorrie Johnson, who split the season at number six, are

I feel like a year of full varsity softball has helped our girls a lot. This year we are more determined in practice, I feel like we are giving more effort and hustle and they are more sure of themselves. They have more confidence this year and I’m hoping - yes, we are going to be young still and still learning - but I expect to win more games this year. We were in a lot of our games last year. We were counting at the beginning of the year and there were four or five really close ones. I expect to win more of those close games this year. - Head Coach Holly Preston

back from last season’s varsity squad. The three are now seniors and will be expected to vault up the lineup into high positions for the Bulldogs this year. “That’s where the challenges are headed right now, Ockenfels said of the senior trio moving up the ranks. “It’s all falling in place from where they were at last year. They are being good role models for the younger players and teaching them and pulling them up to play harder, too. For Gilham, the jump will likely be to the number-one spot. Neal and Johnson should find themselves inside the top four as well. Going from the back of the lineup to the top can be a staggering adjustment, but Ockenfels points to the experience of the team playing all the way to the sectional round of the state playoffs last year as something that will help prepare them for the increase in competition. Even though they were still playing at number five and number six, the

FALL SPORTS 2018

level of competition they saw in the district championship and sectionals is on par with what’s in store for this season at the top positions. “It’s going to be a lot harder competition, obviously, Ockenfels said. “But they know what it’s like to make it through the season and go farther, so that will help. The first couple of matches, mentally, they will have to adjust and realize ‘hey, I’m the one now.’ You have to be able to go out there and take charge because when you are the five or the six, you know, you are kind of more laid back. But, I think they are up for the challenge. Trenton has seven players who were members of the team a year ago in some capacity back this season. Also, 10 new faces are joining the squad, giving Trenton a lot of options to fill in the varsity lineup. Of that group, a handful of players have separated themselves from the pack in the race to fill out the varsity lineup. Lexi Gott, Morgan Dolan and Mallory Sole have looked

strong in the early practices. They could potentially round out the varsity lineup this season as Trenton opens a new era in its program’s history. When Ockenfels served in her first stint as head coach, she inherited a team in a similar transition. By the end of her three-year run. Trenton had a district title in hand. Ockenfels would no doubt like to repeat that success, but she isn’t looking past the current year and

Page 5

feels confident in the hand she has been dealt. “I haven’t seen the other teams in a while because I was so involved in my own kids’ sports, so we will just see, Ockenfels said. “I think we will be right in the mix, though. I’m excited. Trenton will open the season on Tuesday, Aug. 28, playing host to the Carrollton Trojans in a home dual. First serves at the THS tennis courts are scheduled for 4 p.m.

We have a lot of kids coming back who have played with us for the last couple of years. So, we are expecting a lot more out of them than what we have in the past. We have a lot of returners at a lot of positions, so we should see improvement in our batting, fielding and pitching. I’d say our fielding right now is probably the strongest part of our game. It’s kind of where they have made the most gains lately. Hitting is our biggest downfall right now, that and just the baseball knowledge. We are only three years into playing baseball from the fastpitch softball, so we are still learning the game and what to do in different scenarios. - Head Coach Ethan Bunnell

So, that definitely set a good platform for us. Back to lead Trenton into the season is a group of five seniors that have been very instrumental in turning the program back toward the light. The group includes Karli Provorse, a multi-time all-district selection. Provorse led Trenton in nearly every statistical category of note over her first three seasons and will be leaned on once again this year as a primary source for points at the net as well as defensive play on the front line. “Karli brings energy, King said. “She sets a level of determination and she is persistent. That’s something that these other girls can see and pick up on. She is a strong player, she can put stats up and she can pretty much play the floor. She has just kind of stepped into a leadership position and she is really helping out these underclassmen. She is very, very important to the team and I’m excited to see what she is going to be able to do this year.

She will compliment Provorse on the front line, helping Trenton at the net. “Teresa is a character all in her own, King said. “When she does something good she just gets super excited. She is very, very coachable for us. She has seen a lot of success throughout her time in the program and she is getting more consistent with her hitting and serving and just being able to see the floor. That’s just really neat to see. The group is rounded out by Saedee Jackson, who has been one of Trenton’s leading blockers each of the past two seasons, and Melea Farmer and Laura Carlson, both of whom have been varsity contributors at points in their careers. “All three of those players work extremely hard, King said. “They are wanting to be a successful team this year and all of the seniors are really stepping up. I’m very proud

of all five of those girls. In addition to the five seniors, who have varsity spots guaranteed but won’t necessarily be starters, Trenton returns Allena Allen, who saw varsity time last season, Libby Fewins, like Allen is a junior and Evy McCullough, who saw some varsity action as a freshman last season. “Allena has fantastic serving abilities and her passing is great, King said. “Evy is another one who could help. She could step up and be an excellent middle hitter or outside hitter. So, there are a couple of underclassmen who could step up for us this year. While Trenton didn’t lose anyone to graduation, Shawna Coplen has moved, leaving a hole for Trenton at setter. Coplen was Trenton’s leader in assists a year ago and the Bulldogs will need to find another source to feed its talented group of hitters. Another byproduct of the move is the loss of Hayley Coplen, Shawna’s sister, who was filling the

libero role for the Bulldogs as a freshman a year ago. “Losing Shawna is kind of a transition for us, King said. “She moved really well and as of right now, I can’t really say who is going to step up and fill that spot. There are a couple of girls who we are looking at, but right now it’s kind of a free game to see who is going to step up and take that position. Trenton has won a district game in back to back seasons, making it to the quarterfinals in each year. Trenton has still never played in a district championship game, however, and that is something King would like to change in the near future, if not this season. “One of our goals is always to play well at districts, King said. “We would like to win districts one of these years. We have gotten close, winning our first game, but in that second game we just can’t finish it. That’s something that is a goal for us. The Bulldogs will be at home to

T

he Trenton High School girls golf team has six members for the 2018 season and the roster can be split very evenly into two groups. In Werthen Gass, Maci Henson and Oakley Madden, the team has three players with a lot of experience on a golf course. In Ann Airey, Josie Chumbley and Mari Atup, Trenton has three golfers that are golfing for the first time. Gass, a senior, is Trenton’s top returner, having won the Grand River Conference Tournament last season and placing fourth at both the district and sectional tournaments on her way to a state appearance - her second trip in a row to the state’s premier girls golf tournament. Gass was 68th in her first trip to state, but placed 31st in her return trip last season. Trenton Coach Travis Mullenix expects to see another jump from his numberone player again this year. “She has put in a ton of work, you know, Mullenix said. “From her freshman year to where she is now, she is just a different type of golfer. She is taking lessons and she comes

out and she works on it a lot and that’s what it takes. Henson, a sectional qualifier last year, and Madden moved up to varsity competition as sophomores. Now juniors, Mullenix sees that duo taking another step forward this year as well. “I have high hopes for them both, Mullenix said. “I expect them both to at least get to sectionals if not state. Those are pretty lofty goals, but I believe in them both. To round out the varsity lineup, Trenton will need two players from the group of three first-year players

to step up. The hope is one can contribute a score along with the three returnees to give Trenton a fighting chance in dual play. Regardless of whether or not that Travis Mullenix happens, Mullenix is just happy to have options after going into battle Third Year with just four players a season ago. Career Record: “It’s nice to have a full squad, 9-6 Mullenix said. “Those three are all first-year golfers, though. They have a very steep learning curve right now, but they are all listening and that’s the good thing. It’s nice having the numbers out - that Wins 0 0 6 helps.

We are pretty young this year. We only have two seniors, but we do have five juniors. Two of them moved in, so they are new to our program, but the rest are freshmen and sophomores. There is some talent in there, but they are green. Our expectation is that we are going to get a lot of learning experiences this year because a lot of those young players are going to get opportunities to play, which is a good thing. We have a freshman pitcher coming in (Lauren Krohn) and she has had a lot of success in junior high and her travel ball league. So, we are looking to put pretty much the entire work load on her and she is capable of handling that. She has thrown a lot of innings. We are going to have to rely on the upperclassmen that we do have to lead the younger group through, but I think we are going to have a good year.

Each year has produced what seems like a completely new team. You lose a few, gain a few and the dynamic shifts and changes a bit. This year, we expect to see a group of girls who buy into everything we are preparing them for. We expect hard working, no quit, push to the end attitudes that understand there will be super highs and super lows. However, no matter what the situation; we work as a team, lift each other up as a team and leave every practice and game knowing there is always room for improvement and areas to grow.

back from last season’s varsity squad.

Ockenfels would no doubt like to repeat that success, but she isn’t looking past the current year and

feels confident in the hand she ha been dealt. “I haven’t seen the other teams in a while because I was so involved in my own kids’ sports, so we will jus see, Ockenfels said. “I think we will be right in the mix, though. I’m excited. Trenton will open the season on Tuesday, Aug. 28, playing host to the Carrollton Trojans in a home dual. First serves at the THS tenni courts are scheduled for 4 p.m.

“

I feel like a year of full varsity softball has helped our girls a lot. This year we are more determined in practice, I feel like we are giving more effort and hustle and they are more sure of themselves. They have more confidence this year and I’m hoping - yes, we are going to be young still and still learning - but I expect to win more games this year. We were in a lot of our games last year. We were counting at the beginning of the year and there were four or five really close ones. I expect to win more of those close games this year. - Head Coach Holly Preston

We’ve lost three starters from last year, but we have picked up about the same number coming out of junior high. We will have roughly 16 girls that are all pretty good quality. We have a good pitcher coming up, so we should be in pretty good shape pitching with the players we have. A year of experience has been tremendous for the girls we have back from last year, too. You could tell from the first games we played to districts how much better the team got. Just in general all the experience we got helped with their attitude and learning how to win. It was invaluable. - Head Coach Rick Willett

Cowling said. “She is great playing the bunt and makes a lot of plays that most third basemen can’t make. We are moving Maci to short stop and on the left side, with those two, it’s going to be tough to get a base hit through. Whitaker, probably the team’s fastest player, has taken well to centerfield through the team’s summer camp and the early practices. “I see the player we had before the injury, Cowling said. “I really don’t see much of a difference in the way she runs to the ball. Her arm is tremendous and she is hitting the ball as well, if not better, as she was last year. With Moore and Hurley on the dirt and Whitaker and Richman behind them, Trenton’s defense on the left side would rival any other team in the state.

“Ainsley just doesn’t give up much hard contact, Cowling said. “(Croy and Tolson) knowing each other and working together for so long now, though, they know each other inside and out. Salem knows where to put the glove for Ainsley to hit on every pitch. They are just in tune with each other. With so much known for Trenton between the left side of the infield and the battery, the one question mark looms on the right side of the infield. “For a girl who just started playing first base in camp, Chandler is doing a great job, Cowling said. “She is great at digging the ball out of the dirt and the one thing she just needs now is expe-

Page

rience. She was probably going to be our ever day second baseman until Sidney got hur McKayla played a great right field for us la year and is kind of re-learning second base well. So, we are going to use practice and th jamboree to kind of get those girls ready for th Cameron Tournament in case Sidney isn’t able play right away. Two freshmen are battling for the right fie job, should it be available at the start of the se son. Teya Cooksey, from Pleasant View, an Gracyn Rongey are both in the mix. Offensively Trenton was a juggernaut at th plate until it came down to the end of the seaso The Bulldogs were shutout in the regular seaso finale and scored just one run in the distri championship game against Hamilton. “At times last year, I got lulled into it, I g talked into it - we relied too much on hitting th long ball, Cowling said. “Not just hitting th ball over the fence, but hitting the ball into th gap. What we have to do is start to use this team athleticism more. We need to try to score runs small ways, running the bases, bunting more an advancing runners. We have to be sure that w can do that so that when the bats aren’t clickin we can still score runs. The Bulldogs will open the season with th Cameron Tournament on Aug. 24-25.
