NCMC Board Meeting

The North Central Missouri College Board of Trustees will meet in regular session at 7 o’clock tonight (Tuesday) in the Frey Administrative Center on the NCMC campus.

This is a change in the regular meeting time.

Items on the announced agenda include administration of the oath of office to new board member Dr. NiCole Neal, consideration of the Head Start surplus list, consideration of a bid/purchase, discussion possible bond repayment/cost savings, discussion of a board meeting time and date change, consideration of a revised organizational chart, NCMC resignations and employments, Head Start personnel and reports from the Head Start Director, the vice president of academic affairs, the associate vice president of student affairs and the president. An executive session for personnel, legal matters and real estate is also planned.

Chamber After Hours

Lockridge and Constant will be hosting a “Chamber After Hours” on Thursday, Sept. 27 at its office in downtown Trenton.

The Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce-sponsored event will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. New staff will be introduced and refreshments served. Those attending are asked to use the back basement entrance on the Eighth Street side.

THS, TMS Bands Earn Trophies

Both the Trenton High School and Trenton Middle School marching bands came home with trophies following competition on Saturday at the Carrollton Band Day festivities.

The THS indoor drumline and indoor colorguard earned second-place awards as did the band in the field show competition. The band was third in parade competition. Trenton competed in Class 3. There were 10 bands in the parade competition, eight each in field show and drum line and seven in colorguard.

The TMS Band, meanwhile, earned a third-place finish in the parade competition. There were seven bands in the middle school category.

Mostly sunny this week with highs around 70 and lows in the mid 40s. The high on Thursday and Friday at the Government Weather Station at Trenton was 95, Saturday’s high was 72, Sunday’s high was 79 and the overnight low was 55.

A total of .15 of an inch of rain was recorded on Thursday. The high on Sunday at the Government Weather Station near Spickard was 75, the low was 54.

The Trenton High School Key Club is organizing a “Pink Out’ night to be held Friday, Oct. 19 during the football game against Maysville.

The focus of the event is to raise funds, awareness and to show support to those in the school district and community who are currently fighting breast cancer and to demonstrate that no one fights alone.

Key Club is currently taking orders for pink shirts that can be worn that night. The short sleeve t-shirt is pink and features the slogan “Paws for a Cause – Come Together for a Cure.” Shirts are $10 each for youth small through adult XL and $12 for 2XL through 4XL. Order forms are available on the district website at trentonr9.k12.mo.us under the “News” section. The deadline to order shirts is Tuesday, Oct 2. Shirts ordered by students and faculty/staff will be delivered. Orders from the community can be picked up at Dave’s Body Shop or business orders will be delivered.

All proceeds from shirt sales will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Princeton’s Hartley Tears Up Bulldogs

Early in the second half of Friday night’s game, with his team clinging to an 8-7 lead, Princeton Head Coach Thomas Hotmer sent in a play for his offense.

It was fourth down and the Tigers were sitting on their own 33-yard line.

When Princeton’s offense failed to fabricate the three yards necessary for a first down, turning the ball over, there were undoubtedly those in the stands wearing the home team’s Blue and White who would call into question their coach’s actions.

But Hotmer had faith in his defense – and with good reason.

The Trenton Bulldogs, who have seen all too many valleys this season and precious few peaks, fell into yet another basin, turning the ball right back over with a backward pass that fell incomplete for a fumble. Princeton pounced on the ball and, just like that, the Tigers had their opportunity.

That would be all they needed.

Princeton scored touchdowns on its next three possessions, building a 28-7 lead, then hanging on for a 28-21 victory in Grand River Conference play at Eddie Allen Field.

“Other than our first game, our defense has held up really well,” Hotmer said following his team’s third win this season. “Ever since then they have been awesome.”

ball near midfield. When Trenton had to punt on the opening possession, Princeton muffed the kick, giving Trenton the ball at the 21-yard line. Again, Trenton couldn’t capitalize.

It wasn’t until Trenton’s third close-range opportunity that the Bulldogs finally cashed in. Princeton shanked a punt attempt and Trenton got the game’s first touchdown on a 29-yard Mark Trump run.

That would be Trenton’s only score until 11 minutes left in the game.

“Our run defense has been very stout,” Hotmer said.

“There are a few things that we need to clean up on the back end, but our front seven has been very strong for us. Relying on them, especially offen-

sively, we haven’t been able to run the ball and establish a lot of that, so being able to get those red zone stops and playing with a short field and trusting them – that has really helped all of our kids, knowing that we can be really good if we put it all together.”

When Princeton finally broke through against the Trenton defense, it did so in a big way. Quarterback Cam Hartley was surgical in his dissecting of the Trenton secondary. The Tigers stuck to mostly

vertical routes in the third quarter and the Bulldogs paid the price as their secondary simply couldn’t get back far enough to cover the big arm of the quarterback in the number three jersey.

“Trenton has some big guys up front and we really couldn’t establish a run game on them,” Hartley said. “They were pretty physical, but we figured out that we could gash them through the air pretty good, so we went to that game.”

efficient 11-of-14 passing for 202 yards and three touchdowns. Including one 38-yard pass from Cam Jones out of the Wildcat formation, Princeton torched Trenton for a whopping 20 yards per completion.

“That kid, he’s just a gamer,” Hotmer said of his quarterback. “It’s just football to him and he loves to have fun. Three, he plays fearless, he trusts his team and he trusts what he is doing. These kids, they’re all just calling out ‘Coach, vert is wide open.’ I said ‘gosh dang it let’s just run vert then.’ So, those kids, they are calling the game, they are getting after it and just playing football. I think when they do that, rather than thinking so much, that’s when we can be a really good team like I think we have the opportunity to be.”

Trenton’s advantage in the running game was the only area Friday night that the Bulldogs dominated. Princeton managed just 92 yards rushing in the contest, while Trenton piled up 226 yards on the ground. In fact, Trenton had two players individually who out-rushed Princeton’s entire team as the Bulldogs controlled the line of scrimmage for most of the night.

But, it was the ill-timed, illfated turnover that once again left Trenton to ponder ‘what if’ as they trudged off the gridiron at the end of the night.

second half. Both ended with turnovers inside the 30-yard line on fumbles. Princeton, though needing to go 70 yards or more after each turnover, delivered, making the turnovers hurt even more.

“I don’t know where to start,” Trenton Head Coach Brandon Boswell said. “The self-inflicted wounds – they are what they are – but, in terms of drive killers, there is just getting behind the chains and not being able to get the movement we wanted to. And, I will say this, Princeton is not terrible, they are a good team.

We gave them opportunities and we are at their place and they beat us last year and that gave them all kinds of confidence. It is what it is.”

Trenton continued to ride its horses despite facing a 28-7 deficit and the Bulldogs got a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns by quarterback Sam Schilling, each set up by Whitney and Trump runs. The final score came with just over one minute remaining, however, and Trenton’s onside kick was covered up by Princeton, ending the comeback threat.

Hartley backed up his incredible performance on the offensive side of the ball with another stellar night on the defensive end. From his middle linebacker position he almost single handedly shut down the middle of the field, forcing Trenton to the outside. He would finish with a team-high 14 tackles, one for loss, and a fumble recovery.

“Cam Hartley looked like an all-state linebacker tonight and he probably is,” Boswell said.

“We just struggled to get him blocked at all. So when he shut it down in the middle, they just overloaded on the edge and we just couldn’t really do much.”

Trenton stumbled to 1-4 overall on the season and 1-2 in the Grand River Conference while Princeton moved to 3-2 and kept its head above water in the conference race, improving to 2-1 in the league.

Trenton returns home next week, but it will be no small task at historic C.F. Russell Stadium as the Bulldogs host undefeated Milan – the only team to hand Princeton a conference loss this year. The Tigers, meanwhile, are at home on Eddie Allen Field again, this time playing host to Putnam County. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. kickoffs.

’Dogs Show Growth In Loss

Twice now the Trenton High School girls tennis team has faced off with Chillicothe in a dual. On Sept. 3, Trenton was shut out 9-0. At the THS tennis courts on Thursday, Trenton again fell, but this time by a 72 score.

The loss showed just how far a team recovering from the graduation of its top four players has come in a three-week span. Not only did Trenton pick up wins that eluded it in the first meeting with the Hornets, the Bulldogs’ match scores were closer, nearly across the board.

In the first dual, Chillicothe outscored Trenton 74-30 across the nine matches. On Thursday, the margin of victory in the nine matches combined was down to 59-33. “I’m proud of how the girls played tonight,� Trenton Coach Tammy Ockenfels said. “They all had some impressive rallies and are getting better with each match.�

Trenton’s two victories both came in singles play where Emma Gilham handled Chillicothe’s Gracy Reeter 8-1 and Lexi Gott picked up an 8-2 victory over Chillicothe’s Lucy Reeter. Gilham and Gott would also combine to play a competitive doubles match, falling 8-5 to the Chillicothe duo of Hunter Keithley and Hannah Cypert.

Other doubles scores saw the Trenton teams of Elle Neal and Latorrie Johnson and Kendall Crowley and Morgan Dolan each fall 8-2. In singles action, Neal lost 8-2, Crowley fell 8-5, Johnson was defeated 8-0 and Dolan dropped her match 8-1.

BENTONâ&#x20AC;&#x2C6;TOURNAMENT On Friday, Trenton traveled to St. Joseph for the Benton Tennis Tournament. There the Bulldogs ran a team record of 2-1, capturing the consolation title.

Trenton fell 4-1 to Maryville in the opening dual, but bounced back with a 3-2 win over Lafayette in the consolation semifinals and a 4-1 win over Benton in the consolation finals.

Individually, the doubles team of Gilham and Gott placed second in the numberone doubles division, going 30 on the day. The Trenton team would cruise to 8-0 and 8-3 wins against Lafayette and Benton respectively.

Crowley and Dolan received third place in the number-three doubles division, going 2-1 on the day. Neal and Johnson combined to go 1-2 at the tournament, while singles players Sole and Foster each went 1-2.

Trenton saw its overall record on the season go to 7-6 with the 2-1 showing in St. Joseph.

Trenton will be at home on Tuesday, playing host to the Minutewomen.

Gass Medals In Chillicothe

The Trenton High School girls golf team was in Chillicothe on Thursday, competing in the Chillicothe Tournament. Trenton carded a team score of 475 at the event, but the story of the day for Trenton was Werthen Gass.

The Bulldogsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; top golfer netted a score of 88 after shooting twin 44â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on the front and back nines. The score of 88 placed Gass ninth in the 65-player field, earning her a tournament medal.

Behind Gass, Trenton got a 108 from Maci Henson. Henson arrived at her total with a frontnine 56 and a 52 on the back. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Werthen had a solid day,â&#x20AC;? Trentonâ&#x20AC;&#x2C6;Coach Travis Mullenix said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;She was very consistent throughout her round. She had a couple birdies

TMS Softball Wins Again

The Trentonâ&#x20AC;&#x2C6;Middle School softball team picked up its second win on Thursday, playing host to and defeating Hamilton, 6-0.

Summer Martin drove in two with a double, Emma Roberts had an RBI double and Megan Spencer was three-for-three while also throwing a complete-game shutout.

With the win, Trenton moved to 2-6 on the season. Trentonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s B team also defeated Hamilton, winning 9-8 to go to 1-3-1 on the year.

The TMSâ&#x20AC;&#x2C6;teams return to the diamond on Tuesday night, playing host to Putnam County at 5:30 p.m.

Trenton Completes Shutout Of GRC With 7-0 Win At Gallatin

For seven games, the Trenton High School softball team took the best shot its Grand River Conferencemates could muster.

In seven games, the Grand River Conference East Division failed to touch home plate.

Trenton completed a shutout of the GRC East on Thursday night, defeating Gallatin 7-0 on the road. The Bulldogs captured the East Division title this season with a 7-0 record, outscoring the competition 60-0 in those games.

Key for Trenton in this shutout the Bulldogs’ ninth in the last 10 games overall - was once again the pitching of senior Ainsley Tolson, who has pieced together one of the better weeks in program history in the circle. Tolson threw seven shutout in-

nings against Gallatin, allowing just three baserunners, one on a hit and the other two on errors. She also struck out 13.

“Ainsley has taken her pitching to another level this season, especially in the last week where it’s been almost impossible for teams to even get a baserunner against her,” Trenton Head Coach John Cowling said.

“Shutting out the conference was not a goal we had to start the season, but once the streak started it was something our defense wanted.”

While Tolson was cruising, Trenton’s offense sputtered, not getting a runner on base until the top of the fourth inning. Once the Bulldogs finally broke through, however, it was all over for Gallatin.

Mykah Hurley started Trenton’s

rally with a one-out single and promptly stole second base before advancing to third when the catcher’s throw went into centerfield. Maci Moore’s sacrifice fly got Trenton on the board, 1-0.

But Trenton wasn’t done at one.

Salem Croy was hit by a pitch and courtesy runner Gracyn Rongey stole second and scored on Taylor Richman’s single to left. After Sidney Lynch was hit by a pitch, Lexi Whitaker drove home Richman with a single to center to make it 3-0.

Trenton got two more in the fifth on a single by Hurley to drive home Tolson. Hurley would go all the way to third on the attempt to throw Tolson out at home and then came home when Maci Moore reached on a fielder's choice. Trenton tacked on

single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to push the lead to what would be the final score at 7-0.

Hurley and Richman were both two-for-four with Richman driving in two runs and scoring one and Hurley scoring twice and driving in one.

Moore added two RBIs and Whitaker had a hit and an RBI. Trenton will face Stanberry for The overall Grand River Conference championship for the third year in a row. Trenton defeated Stanberry 3-0 in the conference’s inaugural championship game in 2016 and won the conference title over Stanberry 13-0 last year.

Trenton will look to go three-forthree in GRC title games on Thursday, traveling to Stanberry. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

JUNIOR VARSITY The Trenton junior varsity collected its second win of the season on Thursday, defeating Gallatin 12-3.

Trenton made the most of the fiveinning contest, plating at least one run in every frame. The defense, meanwhile, was sharp as well, allowing just three runs on three hits.

Trenton was led by Rongey who finished two-for-four with a triple and three RBIs. Jena Reeter was two-forthree with a double and two runs scored and Chloe Harris was one-forone with three walks and three stolen bases. Morgan King had an RBI double and Kammi Phillips rounded out the hit total with an RBI single.

With the win, the JV moved to 2-5 overall on the season.

When Marceline struck for a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning in Saturday night’s championship game of the North Central Missouri College Nan Carter Classic, it did a number of things.

For one, it tied the title tilt with the Trenton High School softball team at 2-2. It also snapped a 61 and one-third scoreless innings streak by Bulldog pitcher Ainsley Tolson. It highlighted the cost of shaky defense.

Most importantly, though, it made Trenton mad.

The Bulldogs responded with a six-run blitz in the top of the fourth and Marceline would not score again as Trenton rolled to an 11-2 victory and its second tournament championship of the season.

Trenton rolled through the

field, dominating pool play throughout the day before bludgeoning Marceline in the championship. Trenton topped South Harrison 11-1, Brookfield 9-0 and Platte Valley 8-1 to earn a spot in the final.

Facing Marceline in a battle of pool winners, Trenton struck for a pair of runs in the top of the first inning when Mykah Hurley reached base on an infield single and then scored on a Maci Moore-tworun home run.

After Marceline tied the game, Trenton’s outburst in the top of the fourth was triggered

by Taylor Richman reaching on an error. As has been the case all season, when Trenton was given an opening, the Bulldogs knocked the door down. Sidney Lynch and Lexi Whitaker followed with singles, Whitaker’s driving in

Richman for the go-ahead run.

Things really unraveled for Marceline at that point as the Tigers walked McKayla Blackburn to load the bases and Chandler Lynch was hit by a pitch, forcing in another Bulldog run. A fielder’s choice

by Ainsley Tolson and a two run double by Hurley pushed the lead to 7-2 before Salem Croy capped the big inning with a shot off the top of the outfield fence to score Hurley.

There would be no coming back for the Tigers as Tolson quieted the Marceline lineup the rest of the way. Trenton meanwhile, kept the pressure on, adding four more runs the rest of the way to tack an exclamation point onto a dominating day.

“Of our three tournaments I think the Nan Carter is the one that our players look forward to the most,” Trenton Head Coach John Cowling said.

“The girls understand what Nan did for the game of softball in our area and they like playing on their home field.”

Trenton’s pitching was solid all day. Tolson threw 12 innings, allowing just the two unearned runs and struck out 16 batters, including 12 in the championship contest. Tol-

son’s final strikeout in the championship game was the 500th of her career, making her only the second player in Trenton softball history to reach that plateau, joining Aubrey Utley, who had 843 in her career as a four-year starter from 2006-2009.

two runs and striking out 16 on the day as well.

With the 4-0 day, Trenton moved to 16-1 overall on the season. Trenton will return to action on Thursday, traveling to Stanberry for the Grand River Conference championship game. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Cathy Rice Shelburne Baptist Church received a treat on Sunday, Sept. 16 with special music being sang by the Andrew Geiser family, Lisa, Ella, and David. They sang “Bring it All to the Table.” The message was given by Dorothy Cox Schuman, a member of Shelburne Baptist in 1959 until shortly after 1962, when Shelburne sent her to Arizona as a summer missionary.

Dorothy went on to raise four children and then in 1991 became a missionary to Haiti.

She began her story with a song and told about her missionary work. She works through House of Hope Ministries Literacy and Education.

Dorothy Cox Shuman had lunch with Karen Prewitt and enjoyed visiting with old friends from years ago.

Judy Jackson James and Dennine Gott were the greeters on Sunday morning, Sept. 16 at the Galt Christian Church and Gabby Miller and Hope Smiley were the candlelighters. Brian Peterson read the opening scripture from Daniel 3:24-30 and gave a prayer. Ormah Jean Mason

Ormah Jean Mason, an 88year-old former Spickard resident, died on Saturday, March 31, 2018 in Colorado.

Graveside services and inurnment are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2018 at Coon Cemetery east of Mill Grove. Whitaker-Eads Funeral Home of Trenton is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mason was born on Nov. 23, 1929 to Waitman and Velma (Clark) Clemens. She grew up and graduated from Spickard High School. After graduation, she played music on WHO radio in Iowa. She was married in 1952 to Bill G. Mason. They had two children, John W. and Donelda J.

Mason, who survive. She is also survived by two grandchildren, John Kenneth Mason and Chelsea Lee Mason.

Her family moved to Colorado in 1972 and she and her husband were divorced in 1972. She worked many years in Denver, CO for Channel 4 TV, where she retired. After retirement, she moved back to Spickard to take care of her parents. She moved back to Colorado after her mother’s death.

She enjoyed music, quilting and exploring new areas.

She was preceded in death

by Bill Mason and her parents.

Funeral services for Jack Wesley Guthrie were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018 at Dockery Chapel Church, southwest of Trenton.

Pastor Doug Franklin and Rev. Jim Schweizer officiated.

Mr. Guthrie died on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018.

Susie Barnes was the pianist and Brenda Baker was the soloist and sang “I’ll Fly Away” and “Good, Good Father.” The congregation sang

“Hymn of Promise” and a recording of “When the Saints Go Marching In” was played.

Pallbearers were family and friends.

Burial was held on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018 in the Pauline Cemetery at Rutledge. Military graveside rites were conducted by VFW Post No. 4958 of Memphis, MO. Whitaker-Eads Funeral Home of Trenton was in charge of arrangements.

Three Trenton residents received minor injuries in a onevehicle accident on Sunday just south of the Trenton city limits.

Julie Liberty, 29; Bravon Holt, 8; and David Holt, 9; were taken by private vehicle to Wright Memorial Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Mrs. Liberty was the driver of an SUV that was traveling southbound on the Highway 6 off-ramp onto

Highway 65 when the SUV suffered an equipment failure and travelled off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle continued down an embankment, striking a ditch before coming to rest on its wheels. The vehicle received moderate damage.

The accident was investigated by Trooper C.D. O’Hara, assisted by Sgt. Joe Rongey, the Trenton Police Department and the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department.

Assault, Drug Charges Filed

Bonds totaling over $100,000 cash have been set for a Trenton man who allegedly assaulted a household member and failed to appear in court on other charges.

According to the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, 33year-old Cody J. Burchett is being held on bonds totaling $105,000 cash after being arrested on a class E felony charge of third degree domestic assault. He is accused of placing a household member in a choke hold on Sept. 9. He also failed to appear in court on felony charges of stalking and third degree assault (special victim). Burchett is being held in the Grundy County Detention Center. He is scheduled to be in court Sept. 25 on the new charge and Oct. 11 on the other charges.

Two Milan men were arrested on drug charges Sept.

23. According to the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, Ricky G. Banner, 38, and Thomas N. Miller, 29, both of Milan, are facing class D felony charges of possession of a controlled substance except 35 grams or less of marijuana. They are accused of possessing methamphetamine on Sept. 23. In addition, Banner is charged with the class felony of possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance, a class C felony. He is accused of possessing more than 35 grams or less of marijuana with the intent to distribute it.

Banner’s bond is $25,000 cash

only, while Miller’s bond is $15,000 cash only. Both are being held in the Grundy County Detention Center.

Also being held in the GCDC is 28-year-old Bryant Ellis of Trenton, who is charged with the class E felony of third degree assault with physical injury. He is accused of causing physical injury to Otis White, Jr., by repeatedly striking him in the head and face with a closed fist. He is being held on $5,000 cash-only bond.

All three defendants are scheduled to appear in court Sept. 25.

A woman already being held in the GCDC, Donna J. Zeigler of Trenton, will be returned to the Missouri Department of Corrections after she violated the terms of her parole on charges of stealing and fraudulent use of a credit/debit device. She is currently being held on a charge of tampering with a motor vehicle and will be returned to the DOC following the disposition of that case.

Bobbie J. Dunkin, 30, Trenton, has been arrested for violating the terms of her probation on original charges of unlawful operation of an allterrain vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, a class C misdemeanor, and resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor.

Her bond has been set at $200 cash-only, with a court date of Sept. 25.

Work scheduled this week in northwest Missouri by the Missouri Department of Transportationincludes: Daviess County – Pothole patching on Route Z from the city limits of Pattonsburg to the city limits of King City, Tuesday through Friday (a flagger will direct traffic through the work zone).

Grundy County – Pothole patching on Route NN north of Route N, Tuesday through Fri-

day.

Linn County – Pavement improvements on Highway 36 eastbound from Highway 5 at Meadville to Highway 139, Tuesday through Thursday.

Livingston County – Bridge maintenance on Highway 36 at Muddy Creek on Tuesday, and at Utica Overflow Bridge on Wednesday and Thursday.

Mercer County – Pothole patching on Route W, Tuesday through Friday.

TMS OFF TO FAST START

The 2018-2019 school year is under way and Trenton Middle School has gotten off to a great start. We are very excited about what we were able to accomplish last year, in addition to the goals we have set for this year.

With the start of the new school year comes a lot of change at Trenton Middle School, including three new staff members comprised of Lendy Donoho (fifth and sixth grade counselor), Marissa Cowan (sixth grade math), Pamela Klaver (seventh grade paraprofessional). We are thrilled to have them as part of the Trenton Middle School family.

In addition to new staff members we are also implementing a newly created mission and vision. It was constructed with input from all teachers throughout the course of the 2017-18 school year and is as follows: The mission of Trenton Middle School is to inspire students to strive for excellence in all areas of their lives.

The vision of Trenton Middle School is to inspire students to strive for excellence in all areas of their lives by: • Providing challenging and engaging classroom experi-

ences that prepare them for high school and beyond.

• Helping students get involved in activities where they can connect with peers and teachers.

• Securing positive relationships with students to help them grow as productive citizens and lifelong learners.

We are very proud of the mission and vision that was created for the students and staff of Trenton Middle School. It is important to us that all students are supported in their ambitions.

Thank you to parents, families, friends and community members in advance for your role in helping to make these goals a reality.

Some other exciting things happening at TMS this year include reintroducing student council elections. In September, students who were interested had to run as a representative of their homeroom class. Each homeroom then elected a student who will serve as the voice for their peers in their respective classes. Representatives of seventh and eighth grade homerooms were allowed to run for executive offices. We had seven students total run and each had

to give a three to five minute speech on how they could serve the student body. When the elections were completed, Megan Spencer was elected president; Kimberly Otto, vice president; Eliana Cowlingg, secretary; and Tucker Otto, treasurer.

Trenton Middle School will also be competing in the nationwide “Geography Bee” sponsored by National Geographic for the first time this year. According to the National Geographic website, it “includes three levels of competition; school, state, and national.

Schools conduct a GeoBee and name a school champion.” The school champion takes a proctored online qualifying test and the top 100 ranked students in each state qualify to represent their school at the state level GeoBee competition. State champions then travel to National Geographic headquarters in Washington, DC to compete in the national championship. We are looking forward to this opportunity for the students of Trenton Middle School and will release GeoBee dates in the coming weeks.

Lastly, it is a new season for all fall sports teams at Trenton Middle School. All of our coaches and student athletes have put a lot of hard work both in the classroom, and on the field to prepare for a successful season. Thank you to all who have been there supporting our TMS Bulldogs. We look forward to another great year.

Dear Annie: What's with people saying "I apologize" instead of "I'm sorry"? The former is just used to tell somebody that you know you did something wrong. When you tell somebody that you apologize, to me it means nothing. But when you go up to somebody and say you're sorry for what you did, that means it's coming from the heart. If you would please put this in the paper, I would appreciate it very much. -Paulie Dear Paulie: This is a very interesting observation. You may be onto something. I have noticed that "I apologize" tends to come up more in business settings, perhaps because people think it sounds more professional. But you're right that it just doesn't quite have the ring of remorse that "I'm sorry" does, especially in more personal contexts. I imagine I'll hear from a lot of readers on this subject, as these seemingly small linguistic nuances always evoke big responses. Thanks for writing.

Dear Annie: My husband died suddenly, and we didn't have a will. I had no idea that

it would be so important. So many decisions are out of my hands, and everything is taking 10 times longer than it would have if we'd had a will.

So on top of my sadness, I have to deal with lawyers and a judge who makes decisions that are meant to help us but end up costing more and more money. If we'd had a will, I would have been able to keep my husband's business going.

But that is uncertain now. The judge has appointed an extra attorney, in addition to the one I hired, to make sure that the kids' best interests are protected. I was already doing that, of course.

If we'd had a will, we could have been specific about all of that. But my husband was only in his 40s, so we hadn't gotten around to writing a will. Never thought it would happen to us.

I started to write this letter as a question about whether you could help me move this process faster, but I know that you can't. So perhaps you could publish this letter as a reminder to readers to write their wills. Don't put it off! -Judged in Jarvis

The Grundy County Senior Citizens’ Services Fund Tax Board is requesting organizations to submit a Request for Funding to the Board for consideration. The funds are to be utilized to provide services that will improve the health, nutrition and quality of life of persons who are sixty years of age or older residing in Grundy County.

Flu Clinic Is Rotary Topic

Grundy County Health Department Administrator Elizabeth Gibson presented the program at Thursday’s meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club.

Ms. Gibson told about the GCHD Drive-Thru Flu Clinic, which will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 17. The clinic is being held after a five-year hiatus and will be conducted at the Grundy County Emergency Services building on 17th Street and Harris Avenue.

Grundy County residents age 18 and over will be able to come to the facility to get their yearly flu shot, which will be administered by health department personnel as well as volunteer nurses who will be assisting with the event. The route begins on southbound Princeton Road, with the paperwork checkpoint being the First Christian Church. Paperwork is available ahead of time on the health department website as well as at the GCHD office. Paperwork can also be picked up at the Grundy County-Jewett Norris Library and the North 65 Center.

Those getting a shot are asked to bring their insurance card for billing. Donations are also accepted to help cover the cost. More information is available by calling the health department office.

During the business meeting, an update was given on preparations for the Missouri Day Parade and sign-up lists were distributed for volunteers to help with the parade and putting up flags. There was also a recap of the annual fish fry, held on Sept. 15.

The next meeting will be on Thursday, Sept. 27 with representatives from Modine presenting information about the company’s 50th anniversary celebration in November.
