The Uniform Anatomical Gift Act defines the legal and moral considerations of body donation as follows: 1. Any person 18 years of age or older can donate all or part of his body after death for transplantation, research or placement in a tissue bank.

2. A donor’s valid statement of gift supersedes the rights of anyone else, unless a state autopsy law prevails and has conflicting requirements.

3. If a donor has not acted in his lifetime to specify a wish to donate, his survivors may do so, in a specified order of priority.

4. Physicians who accept anatomical gifts, relying in good faith on documents provided to them in such cases, are protected from legal action.

5. Where a transplant is planned, the fact and time of death must be determined by a physician NOT involved in the transplant.

Switching To Medicare

If you are about to turn age 65 and have private health coverage, you should plan to switch to Medicare. Otherwise, you can keep your plan beyond age 65, but you may no longer qualify for tax credits that offset the cost of marketplace plans, which may set you up to pay back thousands of dollars worth of subsidies. However, failing to sign up for Medicare during your initial enrollment period may trigger penalties for late enrollment. Think about switching to Medicare several months before your 65th birthday. It is important to sign up during the initial enrollment period, which is the seven-month period that begins/three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after your birth month.

NOTE: If you are dropping your private health coverage in favor of Medicare, notify your marketplace plan at least 14 days before you want coverage to end. Also make sure to coordinate the end date of the marketplace plan with the effective date of Medicare.

First it was a sniffle. Then my eyes filled with tears, Emotions stopped my Saturday shopping.

The car radio brought live coverage of eulogies for John McCain by his daughter and others. Soon, I had to stop.

No driving through tears.

In a grocery parking lot I heard stories of a strong McCain. Meghan, his daughter, delivered powerful stories.

I admit to being a fan of McCain. I quietly admired this rare politician who put national interests first, driven by intellect, emotion and humor.

No petty meanness. He shook people to make things happen.

It made me proud of my Eisenhower Republican upbringing. Get things done.

No blather.

Meghan told that as a girl when she fell from her horse and broke her collarbone, he picked her up and carried her to the doctor. Then, he took her right back to that same horse.

Get up and ride, he said.

He was mean, she thought.

As an adult, she learned he taught her a lesson. Pain doesn’t stop you. Get up and go.

After stories were told, I slowly understood why they

hit my heart so hard. I’d learned his lessons as a farm kid.

My dad taught no sick days with livestock chores to do.

Milk cows, slop hogs, feed chickens and gather eggs. No calling in sick. Work must be done.

It finally dawned, there’s more to my emotions.

Meghan suffers the loss of her dad, these few days after his death. I can tell her, that won’t go away. My tears came in part for loss of my mom. Six months ago there was pain. Now, there’s lingering loss.

Day by day, I get ideas I gotta tell mom. The next instant I recall, she’s gone.

We’d be lucky to learn lessons Meghan learned from her dad. As she said, he was a sailor, aviator, prisoner, warrior, politician, senator and almost president. Best of all he was father.

We are our parents and our upbringing. Our responsibility becomes to pass that on.

McCain had eulogies by two former presidents. It was a state funeral. Obama said McCain’s sense of humor shows. He gets the last laugh, having opponents say nice things about him.

McCain worked eight months on funeral details.

What would you plan? I was fortunate. At my retirement, professors held a shindig that my mother got to hear.

Coworkers and students took their best shots. Better than a funeral.

McCain makes me think of service to country. Lucky me, I served the U.S. Army for a dozen years: Two on active duty and the rest in reserves.

I was a teeny-tiny cog in defense. First, I served in an artillery firing battery at Ft. Sill, Okla., training forward observers, firing live shells for practice. (That’s when I lost my hearing.) Then I was assigned, because of my MU training, to the North American Air Defense Command.

It was Top Secret, so I’ve never written stories of what I heard. Back then we were tested, being probed, by Russian bombers coming over the North Pole. Were those planes loaded for war?

We assumed so. They tested our radar and scramble times for fighter jets. When challenged, they turned and went home.

I can’t be pals with Putin.

Russians probe our cyber defense.

McCain’s funeral drew laughs and standing applause, not often heard there. The applause at the end broke when Meghan said her dad fought for a great country. It doesn’t need to be made great again. It is great.
