Monitor System In Place
Prisoners Can Now Receive Video Visits From Relatives
by Ronda Lickteig R-T Newswriter The Grundy County Detention Center has made it easier for those wishing to visit with an incarcerated loved one-especially those who live out of the area. Grundy County Sheriff Rodney Herring said a new agreement with the GCDC’s current inmate phone system provider has resulted in visitation now being done by video. Rather than sitting across from each other separated by glass and talking on a telephone, the new system involves using video such as one would use with Skype or Facetime. Sheriff Herring said the change has several advantages. “Well, for one thing, there is

less inmate movement so there’s less work involved and it’s safer,” he explained, noting that rather than moving an inmate to the visitation area the inmate utilizes the day room to access the video system. Sheriff Herring listed other advantages, too, including the fact that visitation will now be offered four times each week for each inmate, rather than twice each week. Another advantage is that families who live outside the area can access the system and visit with their loved one through video rather than just through a phone call. “They’ll need an internet connection and to buy a data plan through our phone provider - I think they start at around $18 - and that allows

The levy was set at the maximum allowed after the sales tax rollback, which is .2374 on the $100 assessed valuation and, based on an assessed valuation of $132,390,269, is expected to generate $314,294.50.

them to connect to the system,” said Herring. A photo ID is required for either in-person or remote visitation. If the visit is occurring at the detention center, the person would present the ID and register at the visitation booth. They will then be directed to the area in which they can visit with the inmate through video. If a visit is being done remotely, the ID is submitted, the person requesting the visit will list times for a visit. When the call comes in, they will just answer it like they would a Skype call or Facetime. Herring said the inmates seems to like the new system, which he said did not cost the See Monitor, Page 7

Members of the Trenton City Council Utility Committee reviewed cost projections regarding a potential upgrade to diesel generators at the south substation during a meeting on Tuesday night at city hall. Also meeting was the AdCommittee, ministrative which took no formal action due to a lack of quorum, but discussed several items. Utility Committee The Utility Committee will ask the full city council to discuss potential generator upgrades and their financial feasibility after reviewing a proposal from Foley Power Solutions to upgrade the program controls at an estimated cost of $56,000 per unit. City Administrator Ron Urton said that with the city having seven units, the total cost could run around $393,000. An optional replacement of two relays at a total cost of $28,000 was also included in the proposal. It was noted that the current program controls are obsolete and that four of the major components in use can no longer be purchased. Urton said the upgrade is important as the city could need to start up the generators in case of a long outage. He said TMU needs to be able to generate electricity rather than always having to buy from an energy pool of users from across the state. The city receives about $13,000 a month in capacity credits from the pool because of the generators, he said. Urton asked the committee to look at increasing the amount of money budgeted each year for sewer line work. That amount is currently $100,000, however, Urton
