LINGERING WINTER SHOCKS SPRING BIRDS, TRIGGERING IDEAS IN AGING BRAIN Spring sprung. Winter fled. Four robins wouldn’t lie! They hopped about in my yard in 52-degree weather, looking for worms. These early migratory arrivals were shocked as me the next morning. Wind chill dropped into 20s. Whap, winter returned a sharp elbow blow to the nose. Happy robin talk I’d heard, changed. In spring warmth, I heard happy chirps, singing of spring. Next day, Mama robins nagged Papa robins. Why did you bring me to this misery? Winter fooled us, again. Snow returned in forecasts. National media report massive birdlife loss in changing weather. Can species survive? What about us? We, not birds, changed the weather. Who can change back? Memory fools me in recalling weather. January was awful, in my mind. MU climatologist, Pat Guinan keeps me factual. His January report shows temperature average for the month at 33.9F. That’s 4.3 degrees above long-time data. Going back a bit, December-January average shows warmest since 201011. That’s a five-way tie for second warmest Dec-Jan period on record. I don’t remember that.
Here’s another change. It was wettest January in 15 years. Now, I do know wet cold sinks into my old bones. Thank goodness for data keepers. Numbers make good science to replace bad ideas. This leads to another elbow. A sharp change in practice of data keeping helps many Missouri beef cow-herd owners. Too many use memory, not records on their heifers. Data lifts quality in Show-Me-Select replacements. They are above what look like perfect heifers. Genomic data tells differences worth knowing and using. Herd owners should attend MU Extension SMS meetings this winter to plan more sales. Stay tuned to come hear new ideas. Sermonizing, I make another turn. I’ve said, “Thank a Farmer.� It’s a national time of year to do that. I suggest another national Thank You. Don’t forget farm wives who keep farmers going. Wives are farmers and hold jobs that bring in grocery money and health insurance. Farmers need those to stay in business. Talk about contributions! When I end up in a Columbia hospital, my nurses have often been farmwives coming in far to Columbia. As one said, “We
do what needs to be done, so they (husbands) can do what they want to do.� Another elbow. Be alert in troubled times for signs of suicide - in farm wives. We hear about farmer suicides. Not so much on wives thinking suicide. Be alert. Help starts by talking and hearing. A couple of private talks with farm wives revealed this idea. I was shocked when I came to hear their stories. The tale tellers didn’t “look� suicidal. It takes listening to “see� it. I come from strong rural culture that doesn’t brag on soul mates enough. I recognized that long ago and try hard to change my ways. It’s tough. Men are bosses in relationship, right? Boy, I’ve had elbows to my nose from feminist friends. I’m learning to listen better. And, I try responding in better ways. Those traits make me a better journalist, also. Listen more and ask questions for clarification. Education never ends. I’ll steal an idea from New York economics-writer Paul Krugman. He’s countering Zombie ideas that should die, but become undead. Old ideas remain believed and acted on, eating brains of unsuspecting believers. May I make another transition back to our beef herd owners? Do they retain Zombie ideas? SMS producers join me in searching for bad ideas that need stomped on. Just one more. Support your newspapers. Print carries power, while Zombies lurk on Internets. Write: daileyd@missouri.edu. Farmers today are helping protect natural resources by using popular conservation practices such as no-till farming. No-till farming is an agricultural technique for growing crops or pasture without disturbing the soil through tillage. It decreases the amount of soil erosion tillage causes in certain soils, especially in sandy and dry soils on sloping terrain. This helps reduce erosion while using less energy. There has been a 34% decline in erosion of cropland by wind and water since 1982. Farmers and Ranchers have been provided with funding from the farm bill for conservation programs that prevent soil erosion, preserve and restore wildlife, clean the air and water, and enhance the wildlife. With farmers helping to reduce soil erosion they will be able to grow more crops for food production. Also, advanced conservation practices are used on more than 50% of cropland acres.
