November is National Diabetes Month. It’s probably not what you want to think about during the holiday season, but frankly, what better time to bring awareness? Diabetes is a disease that happens when your blood sugar (or blood glucose) is too high. Because insulin is the hormone that helps move glucose out of your blood and into your cells for energy, if your pancreas does not make enough insulin, the glucose stays in your blood. Here’s what we should all know and share about diabetes. Your risk of developing type 2 diabetes goes up after the age of 45. The difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes is this: In type 1 diabetes, your immune system attacks
and destroys the cells in your pancreas that produce insulin. This is usually diagnosed in children, but it can happen at any age. Type 2, however, is when your body does not make insulin well. Again, you can develop this at any age, but the risk goes up for middle-aged and older adults. A fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test is not the only way to diagnosis diabetes. The FPG test measures the amount of glucose in your blood after fasting for at least 8 hours. A result of 99 or below is normal; 100 to 125 is an indication of prediabetes, and 126 or above is diabetes. However, your doctor may want to perform the same test on a following day before diagnosing.
Another option is a hemoglobin A1C, a blood test that measures your average blood glucose for the past 2 to 3 months. A result of less than 5.7 % is normal, 5.7% to 6.4% is considered prediabetes, and 6.5% or higher is considered diabetes. Managing diabetes is a lot easier if you know the ABCs. A is for A1C, B is blood pressure, C is for cholesterol, and S is for stop smoking. Staying on top of your blood sugar levels and making certain lifestyle adjustments can greatly reduce your risk of complications from diabetes. Talk to your dietitian or doctor about an appropriate meal plan that works for you and any medication you may be taking.

“Exit speed� is a trait farmers should know about their cattle. Slow speed adds value. Exit speed tells how fast beef animals leave working chutes. Some jump out when the head gate opens. Others stroll. Speeders likely fought being worked on. Recently, farmers saw and learned about exit speed in two Extension meetings at Joplin Regional Stockyards. The first group brought feeder calves entered in a Steer Feedout program. Livestock specialist Eldon Cole made the gathering teaching time. Graders and calf buyers talk about each consignment. They told differences in temperament among calf lots. Some calves were hyper. Some were quiet. Now genetic profiles predict calm or hyper calves. DNA influences temperament. Exit speed can be nature or nurture. Calm calves learn hyper when mistreated. Can calf temperament reflect owner’s mood? Feeder-calf-buyer panelists said they pay more for calm calves. Ones walking into sale rings fetch higher bids. Buyers slow bidding on calves climbing out of the ring. Calves with high exit speed won’t slow down to eat going
into a feedlot. Slow ones make gains and money. Buyers at Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer sales look at “exit speed.� I’ve gone to SMS sales for over 20 years and see differences in pens of heifers. Some stroll in and look around. Others zip around, looking for escape. Over decades, I’ve seen calming of heifers. Produces learn that nervous heifers don’t bring as much. At the Joplin sale last week, some heifers were sorted by genetic traits. All heifers in a pen had similar DNA. Extension specialists noted that heifers rated “docile� were ho-hum calm. Eldon Cole's farmers are early adopters of genetic testing. About half the sale heifers had known DNA. Now, buyers must learn how to read genetic data in heifer sale catalogs to know sale lot offerings. Genetic data has value. Slowly we’re applying science to herd replacement buying. Sadly, I missed reporting firsthand those two meetings. I’m grounded, still recovering from a fall and broken knee at the Missouri Photo Workshop. Last week, my orthopedic surgeon gave my knee good remarks on recovery. No hardware needed to screw the kneecap back together. But, I’m not running
yet. My exit speed rates near zero. But, that doesn’t make me worth more. I’ll travel again, soon. Meanwhile, I write stories. No knee needed after I get my butt in a chair in front of a computer keyboard. Fingers still connect to the brain. Co-worker Linda Geist covered the steer feedout gathering. In turn, I helped her with livestock terms she learned. Until now, she’s written crop and horticulture news. She brings excellent journalism to our news output, fast. At the Missouri Photo Workshop, a young photographer learned about beef cows in her farm story. She took a classy photo of the value of a docile cow. The farmer astraddle a new calf clamps on an ear-tag number. The mama cow about 10 feet away watches intently. She is not climbing atop the farmer. The cow is docile. Her calf, with mom’s calming DNA, takes the ear tag. Docility gains value for a cow-calf producer. Calm working of cows teaches them calm behavior. Some bad clues making cattle nervous are low farmer contact. Feed buckets help teach. But, hot-shot prods and whips destroy calm. Likewise hot-rod four wheelers and ill-trained dogs don’t help the calm. Over years of reporting on management-intensive grazing, I note MiG herds tend to be docile. They learn when the farmer comes to open s gate to a fresh paddock, they get more grass. They calmly await the farmer ’s call. No roundup needed. Share your stories: duanedailey7@gmail.com.

2019 Medicare Changes The standard monthly premium for Medicare part B enrollees will be $135.50 for 2019. An increase of $1.50 from $134 in 2018. An estimated 2 million Medicare beneficiaries (about 3.5%) will pay less than the full Part B standard monthly premium amount in 2019 due to the statutory hold harmless provision, which limits certain beneficiaries’ increase in their Part B premium to be no greater than the increase in their Social Security benefits. The annual deductible for all Medicare Part B beneficiaries is $185 in 2019, an increase of $2 from the annual deductible $183 in 2018. Medicare supplement insurers will take this deductible increase in account as premiums are calculated by the loss on their specific plans. The richer the supplement plan, the more probability for an increase in rate. Annual review with your insurance provider/plans is a good idea.
