LINGERING AUTUMN RAINS HURT MISSOURI’S MIRACLE BEAN CROP The miracle-crop soybean may meet its match in the weather this year: A multiwhammy of drought, rain, rot and more hit so many. Drought is bad. Rain is good. That’s a formula for the soybean to make a record crop and save the day for farmers. I’ve reported how the bean can look like a goner but revive with September hurricane rains. In early fall, the 2018 crop looked okay. Drought hit hard this summer, and then midAugust rains made a crop for many. But September rain returned, not quitting. It wasn’t big rain in many cases but endless drizzle. Beans not picked early suffer more than delayed harvest. There’s a sidebar to the soy story. In the mid-weather drama, Soy Doc Bill Wiebold faded and folded. A heart attack took him out. No weekly updates from the University of Missouri Extension professor of crop management. Here’s good news. A quick trip to the emergency room followed by a stent got him recovering. I’ve been through repair and know it works. One of Bill’s first e-mails was to me, saying he was trying to keep up with the journalist.
My response: Don’t believe doctors saying you'll have quick recovery. I said multiply their reported recovery time by three or four. But, he thought he could attend Soybean Day three days after the implant. No way. Back when, I thought I could go to work the next week also. Hearts don’t have miracle genes of soybeans. Repair takes time, a long time. More good news: There’s a wrap-up on soybean damage in the MU crop management newsletter this week. Wiebold is back in top reporting form. He tells the soy damage drought causes. That ranges from death to delayed growth. Beans are few and small, on and on. The new part of his report is wet weather impact. In the past, hurricanes brought needed fall moisture to Missouri. This year more and bigger hurricanes hit U.S. agriculture. This is different. Those not believing in climate change must open their eyes. Or stick their hand out to feel a different kind rain. The 2018 hurricanes were huge. Warm ocean water powers big storms that lift more moisture into the atmo-
sphere. Eventually that water falls back to earth, or hangs in the air. Both keep harvest weather damp. Crops don’t dry with constant drizzle or fogs. I check AgEBB weather reports from Sanborn Field in mid-campus. It’s amazing the rainfalls with under 0.04 inches for a day. That rain doesn't add deep soil moisture, but, does damage unpicked beans Pods won’t dry, but they split and spill beans. Also, leaves dry and drop but stems don’t dry. Green stems complicate harvesting, Wiebold writes. Even some bean seeds stay green. They are smaller than usual, so combines must be adjusted to not lose them. Finally fungi enter pods, starting rot before harvest. Results: More harvested beans will be docked at the elevator. News stories tell more woes. Wild weather down south slows moving beans down river for export. That backs up storage here at northern elevators. With that backup, elevators pay more attention to dockage. With so much bad news, it’s good that Soy Doc writes and brings his sense of humor. We’ll need that. Share your news on corn and soybean crops. For a while it looked like Missouri had all the bad luck. Now, other states report snow stopping harvest. This year look for good news where you find it. Is that in the cornfield? Family Advocate The North Central Missouri Children’s Advocacy Center is in search of a Family Advocate to provide case management, screening, assessment, referral, and support services to child victims of abuse and their families after a report of abuse has been made. This will include during the investigation and throughout the criminal and/or juvenile court process. The focus of victim support and advocacy is to help reduce trauma for the child and non-offending family members and to improve outcomes. This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Applicants must be punctual, detail oriented, will be expected to adhere to strict rules of confidentiality, be able to pass a criminal history/background check, and a background screening via the Family Care Safety Registry. Candidate must hold a Bachelor’s in a Human Services related field with demonstrated expertise in child abuse. Must be able to and have the willingness to work with populations and families in crisis. • Feed all livestock to meet nutrient requirements, including: grain, hay and free choice mineral. • Sort livestock for embryo implants, pregnancy checks, and to go home. • Monitor livestock for heats and record. • Maintain identification and location of livestock. • Provide communication of livestock issues, such as health concerns, to veterinarians and client service representatives. • Follow reproductive management including estrus synchronization, and assist in pregnancy checks. • Enter livestock procedures and events in production database for accurate billing and record keeping. • Maintain facilities including but not limited to manure hauling, bedding, feeding, snow removal, box scraping, and fencing. • Assist maintenance crew in construction projects, repairs, and maintenance.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Minimum of attending high school.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS: Be able to lift 50 pounds. Must be able to operate skid loader, ATVs, pickup, tractor, and manure spreader. Working conditions are primarily an outdoor environment Normal working hours are every other weekend, all day Saturday, chore time only (7-10am and 3-5pm) on Sunday.
