It is vitally important that consumers consult with an experienced insurance agent when ) choosing between Medicare Advantage Plans, most of which are similar to private health insurance plans. Most Medicare Advantage plans are organized along the lines of a “health maintenance organization” (HMO) or a “preferred provider organization” (PPO) with the choice of one doctor as the primary care provider. OLD FOLKS FALLING DOWN ISN’T GOOD POSITION TO FIND SELF IN
Some wise advice: When growing old, don’t fall down. That’s hard to follow, I’ve discovered the hard way. My recent fall was most dramatic of three I’ve had. After this fall, I read MU Extension news about a grant to help old folks keep from falling. I wish them speed, helping me stay erect. My first falls came two years ago. After my second trip to a neurosurgeon, he asked why I wasn’t using a cane. I thought: “I don’t need a ….” With a change, I agreed. He’s right. I came a long way without a fall. A cane isn’t just support it becomes a metronome for a slower pace. Quick speed changes cause falls. Also, I’m wary of throw rugs. In old age, my feet tangle with them as I shuffle along. Rugs catch my shoes and trip me. I recall an early extension story. A home economist surveyed farm wives about making homes safer. As she went house to house, she learned later that the first contact called her neighbors. She warned them to take up throw rugs. “She doesn’t like rugs,” the farm wife warned her neighbors.
Extension lessons work when learners spread the word. My latest fall came at the recent Photo Workshop. In a new place, I didn’t see a step down in the sidewalk. I was looking around. My cane went down in front of me when I reached an unseen step. My whole body fell forward, chasing my wayward cane. I landed on my nose and knee. Flat on the ground, I saw blood pooling on the concrete under my face. My nose flowed red. Sitting up, I found a Kleenex in my pocket to stuff in my nose to stop bleeding. I got up slow. Just then, other faculty came along going to work. They showed alarm asking: “What happened?” I didn’t know I was bleeding from a cut brow from my broken glasses. One snapped a cellphone photo to show what they saw. My bright red stripes scared me. With pressure, bleeding wounds stop. A torn kneecap doesn’t heal fast. I’ll learn this week how orthopedic surgeons fix knees. My advice, use the cane. But, make sure you put the cane tip on solid ground

before putting weight on it. My hurt muscles respond to Tylenol. Pain relievers keep me walking. But, an entertaining side effect appears. Pills stir vivid dreams. Last night I had two, and I know the triggers. I dreamed of doing a story on a pig farm in a dry riverbed. I thought those hogs will wash away in a flood. “Oh no,” the farmer said, “The river never floods.” That came directly from Gulf Coast news along rivers that never flooded. Next dream, I covered a Show-Me-Select Heifer Sale. The printed catalog was missing genetics on the heifers. (I’d just worked on a story of six replacement sales coming this fall.) While recuperating, the New York Times carried a story on taking care in aging. Well thanks, I’ll heed. The second NYT story is harder to follow. Successful retirement comes from seeking contentment, it says. That reinforces recent talks with fellow retirees who keep parttime jobs. We agree. We enjoy our work. Frustration comes in being slower in old age than in our 50s and 60s. I’ll share advice of my nurse daughter who works with old folks. She said: “You can’t retire. You’ve got to keep busy.” She sees old guys retire and sit. They don’t last long. Those who stay active stay alive. Here’s my plan: Keep writing. Send retirement tips to duanedailey7@gmail.com.

• Feed all livestock to meet nutrient requirements, including: grain, hay and free choice mineral. • Sort livestock for embryo implants, pregnancy checks, and to go home. • Monitor livestock for heats and record. • Maintain identification and location of livestock. • Provide communication of livestock issues, such as health concerns, to veterinarians and client service representatives. • Follow reproductive management including estrus synchronization, and assist in pregnancy checks. • Enter livestock procedures and events in production database for accurate billing and record keeping. • Maintain facilities including but not limited to manure hauling, bedding, feeding, snow removal, box scraping, and fencing. • Assist maintenance crew in construction projects, repairs, and maintenance.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
Be able to lift 50 pounds. Must be able to operate skid loader, ATVs, pickup, tractor, and manure spreader. Working conditions are primarily an outdoor environment Normal working hours are every other weekend, all day Saturday, chore time only (7-10am and 3-5pm) on Sunday. Rotations are used for the holidays.

Many people hold what is known as calling hours, viewing, visitation or a wake preceding a funeral. During this period, the body, in an open or closed casket, is present and friends and relatives stop by to pay their respects to the grieving family. On many occasions, this is a time when religious or fraternal services are held. Viewing varies in length from several hours immediately proceeding the funeral to a period up to a week before the funeral. A period of one to three days for viewing is quite common. Often it is most convenient
to have the viewing and visitation in a funeral home. However, there are alternatives. It may be possible to have the viewing in a church or private home. If you choose an alternate place, you should ask the funeral director to make arrangements to transport the deceased to and from the funeral home.
