Gov. Parson To Speak At Luncheon Missouri Gov. Mike Parson will kick off the 2020 Great Northwest Day at the Capitol event as the keynote speaker during a luncheon at the capitol in Jefferson City on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The two-day event is expected to gather over 300 people from the 19county region and is focused on raising awareness of northwest Missouri to state legislators and departments. In addition to the luncheon, the event includes introductions on the House and Senate floors, informative roundtable sessions followed by the main evening event that will provide an opportunity for community representatives to promote their communities to legislators and others who are invited to attend. The Great Northwest Day event will
conclude with a regional breakfast on Wednesday, Feb. 5. As legislators begin a new session in Jefferson City, citizens of northwest Missouri have been preparing to be sure their voices are heard. Through an extensive process, the GNW Steering Committee has gathered and prioritized issues facing the region. One of the many strengths of Great Northwest Day at the Capitol is how the steering committee collects and prioritizes issues and concerns that impact the entire northwest region. “The Great Northwest Day committee takes extensive measures in gathering information on the issues that face our communities and that benefit the region as a whole,” said 2020 Steering

Administrator Contract Extensions Are Offered The Grundy R-5 Board of Education offered contracts and discussed the 2020-21 calendar during a meeting on Thursday night, Jan. 9 at the school in Galt. According to Superintendent Phil Fox, the board voted to offer contracts to high school/middle school principal William Dow and elementary principal Jennifer Dyer for next year. Salaries will be determined at a later time. The board reviewed options for next year’s school calendar and asked the administration to prepare a calendar with an extended school day. The topic will be discussed at the February board meeting. A bid for leasing four copiers over the next five years was approved. The successful bid was from Marco at a cost of $521/month and was one of three bids considered. The board voted to accept bids for the 201920 audit, which will be opened at the February

these priorities will be released soon. The cost to attend Great Northwest Day is minimal, thanks to corporate sponsorships. The board reviewed its athletic cooperative agreement with the Newtown-Harris School District but took no action.The preliminary food service review was shared with the board along with the elementary and secondary principals’ reports. Bus repairs were also discussed. Named as the Grundy R-5 nominee for the district Belcher Scholarship was senior Jandie Peterson. Donnie Fordyce and Abe Carver, incumbents on the board of education, have filed for re-election to a three-year term. The term of Tyson Christy is also expiring. Persons have until Tuesday, Jan. 21 to file for the board and can do so in the superintendent’s office during regular office hours. The next meeting of the board will be at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12 in the high school business room.
The Trenton Middle School Spelling Bee will be held Wednesday, Jan. 15 in the TMS Media Center. More than 70 students will compete, beginning with fifth grade at 8:30 a.m., sixth grade at 9:25 a.m., eighth grade at 10:15 a.m. and seventh grade at 11:05 a.m. A champion, runner-up and an alternate will be selected from each grade level to compete at the Grundy County Spelling Bee, set for Jan. 30 at TMS. Family and friends of spelling bee contestants are invited to attend.
Wellness Signup Extended Due to the inclement weather experienced in the area on Friday and the Ketcham Community Center closing early, sign-ups for the 2020 Green Hills Wellness Challenge have been extended through today (Tuesday Jan. 14). Participants may sign-up at KCC or Grundy County Health Department during regular business hours. No other dates for the Wellness Challenge have changed. Week 1 weigh-ins will still be held this week, starting on Thursday, Jan. 16. Weigh-ins will take place at the KCC and the health department. Persons with questions about the Green Hills Wellness Challenge can contact the Grundy County Health Department at 359-4196.

All-GRC Bands Include THS, TMS Trenton will be represented by 25 students in the Grand River Conference All-Conference middle school and high school bands, which will perform on Saturday, Feb. 1 at South Harrison High School in Bethany. Trenton Middle School will have seven students in the middle school band, which will be under the direction of band directors from the GRC. There will be 18 Trenton High School students in the high school band, which will be directed by Dr. Nathan Gray from Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph. The high at Trenton on Thursday, Jan. 9 was 63, Friday’s high was 29, Saturday’s high was 23, Sunday’s high was 39 and the low was 23. A total of 2 inches of snow and .90 of rain was recorded. The high on Sunday at the Government Weather Station near Spickard was 29, the low was 19.

BACKYARD BRAWL Wrestler Go 2-0 In First Home Action Of Season The Trenton High School wrestling team does not get a lot of opportunities to compete on their home mat. So given the opportunity on Thursday night to show off in front of a home crowd, the Bulldogs made the most of it. Trenton scored two victories, defeating a limited Carrollton lineup 52-12 and followed it up with a 39-33 victory over Maysville to sweep the night. “We competed well,� Trenton coach Charlie Bacon said. “I thought some of us looked a little out of gas, though, and I know it’s not because we are out of shape. I think maybe it being the first dual back (from Christmas break) we just lost that match shape, I don’t know. But, we need to clean a few things up.� Against Carrollton, Trenton faced a lineup that included eight open weights. Trenton was able to take advantage of five of those while the remaining three resulted in double

The next match of the dual also went to Trenton as Trump secured his second win of the night at 182, defeating his opponent by a 93 decision. “I thought Trump had a good night,� Bacon said. “He got two big wins against two pretty decent kids.� Maysville answered as Trent Strong scored his 100th career victory for the Wolverines, pinning Allen Airey at 195. Trenton was open at 220 and 285 as Maysville took a brief 18-9 lead. Hunter McAtee stopped the Bulldog bleeding, getting a win by fall for Trenton at 106. Maysville was open at 113 and 120 as Trenton went back in front. Both schools were open at 126. “Hunter McAtee had a good night, too,� Bacon said. “He only had one match, but he was able to go out and get the pin for us. With how the scored ended up, that was really good for us.� Brice Gibler lost a hardfought match at 132. Gibler trailed 4-2 before generating an escape late in the match to pull within a single point. Despite a bevy of leg-shot attempts by Gibler, the Trenton grappler was unable to record another point and fell by the singletally decision. “Gibler always gives me everything that he has got,� Bacon said. “He just got beat tonight. It was a close match and sometimes you come out on the losing end of those. I think nine times out of 10 we beat that kid. But tonight he gave us a good match.� With Maysville open at 138, Trenton garnered a 12-point advantage that, combined with the win by forfeit due at 160, sealed the dual victory for the Bulldogs. With the two dual wins, Trenton improved to 7-4 overall in head-to-head action. Trenton’s girls didn’t get any matches at the home event as all three females dressed out for the triangular won by forfeit against both Carrollton and Maysville. Allison Yoder (130), Kaitlee Lovell (135) and Libby Fewins (166) all had their hands raised without having to do anything more than run onto the mat. Trenton officially won by girls duals by 186 scores. Trenton’s wrestlers return to action this Thursday, traveling to Marceline for a triangular that will also include Polo. That event is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start.
The Gilman City boys were outmatched on Thursday on the road in Green City, falling 79-49 to the host Gophers. Green City used a 31-14 run in the opening eight minutes to set the tone for the contest. The Hawks would be outscored in the second and third quarters as well before bouncing in and out of running clock situations in the final frame. Despite the lopsided score, Brody Langfitt had a strong night for the Hawks, going for 27 points and eight rebounds. Jory Stotts added 12 points and three steals for Gilman. The loss dropped the Hawks to 1-9 overall on the season. Gilman returns to action this Friday, playing host to Breckenridge. at Green City girls 64, Gilman City girls 13: The Gilman City girls couldn’t find much offense on Thursday in Green City and it led to a 64-13 loss. Jolee Ward led Gilman with seven points in the loss. The Gilman girls (1-9) will host Breckenridge on Friday, tipping off at 6 p.m.
Sports Briefs... Maysville Games Rescheduled The postponed Grand River Conference doubleheader basketball games between Trenton and Maysville, originally scheduled for Jan. 10, now have a make-up date. The Bulldogs and Wolverines will now meet in Maysville on Monday Feb. 10. Tip off is set for 4:30 p.m. with a junior varsity girls game. The JV boys will follow and then the varsity teams will take the court to close out the night.

NCMC To Offer Painting Class North Central Missouri College will be offering a continuing education course, “Introduction to Acrylic Painting,” instructed by Gallatin art instructor Ally Ockenfels. Ms. Ockenfels will introduce participants to various techniques such as gridding, batiking, painting in perspective and more. Each week participants will create one work which incorporates these techniques, totaling four paintings made during the class. The course will take place over a four-week period, meeting on Wednesdays in February from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in Building B on the NCMC campus in Trenton. The cost is $67 and all materials are provided. HIGH SCHOOL STAFF SALUTE There’s an adage that floats around about schools that says, “the most important people to know in any school are the custodians and the secretaries.” As the saying implies, the principal may be in charge, but these are the people with the keys to the school (both literally and figuratively) who are getting the dayto-day work accomplished. I cannot deny that this is largely true. These are the unsung heroes of the school day who are working constantly but quietly behind the scenes to make sure things run smoothly. Fortunately, at Trenton High School, we are blessed with both great custodial staff and administrative assistants. Without denying credit to our custodians who have recently been recognized for their outstanding work, I’d like to spotlight the work of the THS office staff. Donna Dougan has been the Counselor’s Assistant for thirteen years at THS. In addition to helping coordinate the schedules for our two counselors, Mrs. Dougan works daily with students about the schedules and questions regarding credit and transcripts.Whether she’s helping a student get the necessary classes to get into the college they desire or meeting with a student about what they have to do to graduate, Mrs. Dougan’s office is routinely busy. Unofficially, Mrs. Dougan assists by helping with the Bulldog Closet, coordinating class ring orders, organizing events like Senior Awards Night and graduation or even just talking with a student who’s having a bad day. school, screens visitors when they come to the door and assists students, staff and parents with a wide variety of tasks. Mrs. Spurgeon fastidously maintains students’ daily attendance, checking students in and out of the school, and takes account numbers at breakfast and lunch times. You will also catch her very often answering a wide variety of questions, from “can you tell me what class I’m supposed to be in now,” to “can you make sure this gets to my son?” She’s also a great sport when I comes to Faculty Dress-Up Days or participating in the Faculty Christmas Band. Kelli Beavers has worked at THS for 13 years with two of those years in her current position as the administrative assistant. Mrs. Beavers day consists of the more arduous tasks of completing requisitions for the budget, booking substitute teachers, setting up classes and rosters in the master schedule, and ensuring grades are transcribed properly. Mrs. Beavers also helps by logging A-Plus tutoring hours and helping staff across the district with questions about the Student Information System. These three women together have a collective knowledge and experience with the day-to-day operations of the school that exceeds their years of service. In addition to regularly assisting each other with the duties mentioned, they help with student transfers, enrollment, and a variety of odd and unusual tasks too numerous to describe. Their willingness to work together for the benefit of students, staff, and parents is appreciated beyond words.

Talent Auditions Are This Week Due to this past weekend’s inclement weather, auditions for “Trenton’s Got Talent” have been moved to this week. Billing Is Topic At Rotary Club Denise Hamilton, Wright Memorial Hospital manager of business services, was the speaker at the Thursday, Jan. 9 meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club. Melissa King was the program chairman. Mrs. Hamilton, who has been with WMH for 20 years, talked about the hospital’s billing department, which also does billing for Hedrick Medical Center in Chillicothe and Anderson County Hospital in Garnett, KS. She told about the process the hospital follows regarding payments, including insurance and self-pay, and financial assistance that is available to patients who are unable to pay for their hospital care. She said that new software has allowed the hospital to better track services provided as well as track payments. During the business meeting, new officers and board members were announced. Kim Washburn will be the new president, effective July 1, while Brian Upton will be the president-elect. New board members are Michael Ormsby, Tom Witten and Diane Lowrey.

NEW LEGISLATIVE YEAR UNDER WAY Every January, a new legislative session starts in our State Capitol. Between Jan. 8 and May 15, 34 senators will make the trek from their hometowns to Jefferson City. Our goal is simple, to find ways to improve the lives of all Missourians, regardless of what part of the state they are from. We take the time to visit with constituents, whether it is through an official capacity or when someone stops us at the grocery store or after church. For the next five months, we are working for all of you. In some ways, we will take up where we left off last May. All of the committee assignments stay the same. We will probably start hearing legislation in committee as early as this week. I will resume my role as chair of the Missouri Senate Appropriations Committee. Our job is to hear from members of the public, as well as directors of every department throughout state govern-
ment. From there, we will review thousands of lines of budget items and produce a balanced budget that will go to the governor by May 8. It is a true honor to be your Missouri state senator, and I am looking forward to working with my colleagues again this year to do everything we can to make our state a better place to live, work and raise a family. I appreciate all of the advice constituents have given over the past several months and hope people can take the time to make the trip to the Capitol at some point this session. I have talked with her many tim mes about this situation, but sshe either makes excuses aboout her hearing problem or ggets angry and refuses to discuuss the issue. She just smiles and nods when people try too talk to her or tells them sshe can't understand them. Talking on the phone with hher is impossible. And her hearring problem has gotten her innto trouble when she's at apppointments with doctors, as she sometimes misses what they tell her. The cost iss not an issue, because she could easily afffford hearing aids, and I have off-fered to drivve her to any appointments. Crude oil jum mped more than 3% the day President Dona ald Trump ordered a drone strike against Revolu utionary Guard Gen. Qa assem Soleimani, the country’s top military lead der. Oil spiked again affter Iran retaliated, firing g rockets at Iraqi military ba ases where U.S. soldiers are stationed. Oil prices ea ased after it became cleare er that war between Iran and a the U.S. was not as like ely as it
initially appeared. Iran doesn’t sell much crude oil to American refineries because of U.S. sanctions. However, Iran’s position near large oil producers like Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar means violence in the region could significantly disrupt production. Until this week’s increase in tension, crude oil prices had been relatively stable for much of the last y year, trading g betwee en $50 and $65 a barrel with w one exception. Oil also o remains below the price it hit in 2018, when a barrel traded t at $75.

Help! -Frustrated Friend Dear Frustrated Friend: Denial can be a dangerous coping mechanism, but it's a coping mechanism nonetheless -- so your friend will cling to it until she's ready to let go. Continue encouraging her to get her hearing tested, and even suggest getting your own hearing checked at the same time. If she were to feel less singled out, she might feel less defensive and more open to the idea. There are some rudimentary hearing tests available online. Yo You could pull one up on your phone, tablet or computer the next time you're together. These online tests are no substitute for medical attention, of course, but might be a good first step to get her moving in the right direction.

Jerry Duane Keith Jerry Duane Keith, a 79year-old resident of Coffeyville, KS, died on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020 at Jane Phillips Hospital in Bartlesville, OK. Funeral services for Mr. Keith were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan, 13, 2020 at First Southern Baptist Church in Coffeyville, Kansas. Burial will be at 3 p.m. today (Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2019) in Cat Creek Cemetery at Brimson, under the direction of Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory of Coffeyville. Mr. Keith was born at Linneus on Aug. 5, 1940, the son of Ray and Sarah Alice Gipson Keith. He graduated from Jamesport High School. He was married on May 27, 1962 to Bonita Joy Murphy. He was a Union Pacific Railroad engineer for 43 years and enjoyed
fishing, hunting, traveling the United States, camping with his family and visiting his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Bonita of the home; two sons, David of McAlester, OK and Adam of Ft. Davis, TX; a daughter, Ann Taggart of Copan, OK; seven grandchildren, Stormy, Jeremy, Mitch, Isaac, Taylor, Everett and Matthew; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Virginia Lynch of Trenton and Bonnie Otto Gumm; and two sistersin-law in this area, Glenda Faye Keith of Trenton and Judith (Steven) Urich of Humphreys. Mr. Keith was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dale and Wilburn Keith; and one sister, Grace Hudspeth.

Griffin Trial Is Set For July 20 A Trenton man who is charged in the shooting of a Trenton police officer in June 2019 is scheduled to go on trial in July. Jamey Griffin appeared in Livingston County Circuit Court on Tuesday, Jan. 7, where Judge Ryan Horsman set a jury trial for July 20-24 in Chillicothe. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for March 3. Griffin is charged with first degree assault-serious physical injury or special victim and unlawful use of a weapon, both class A felonies, and armed criminal action, an unclassified felony. He is accused of shooting Trenton Police Officer Jasmine Diab on June 14 as Officer Diab was transporting Griffin for a mental health evaluation. The shooting occurred in Daviess County, however, Griffin was granted a change of venue, with the case being moved to Livingston County. He is being held without bond in the Daviess-DeKalb Regional Jail in Pattonsburg.
