www.republican-times.com INSURANCE CORNER by Robert Barnes Broker/CEO

A Healthy Look at Life Insurance

It stands to reason that the healthier you are, the lower rate you can expect to pay on life insurance (all other things being equal). Insurance providers generally have four or five rate levels. If you are overweight, have high cholesterol levels, or have high blood pressure, you can generally anticipate higher premiums. Without question, smokers pay more than non-smokers. The good news is that if you make a determined effort to become healthier, you may be able to lower your life insurance premiums. For instance, smokers generally pay four times the amount that non-smokers do. However, if they quit their habits and remain smoke-free for two to three years, they may qualify for a standard nonsmoker rate.

Grant Sought For Project

The North Central Missouri Regional Water Commission and the Green Hill Regional Planning Commission have applied for a $25 million USDOT BUILD grant to ensure adequate and safe roadway access for community members, agri-businesses, outdoor recreation enthusiasts, and industrial traffic in the area of the 4,550-acre (2,300 acres of water) East Locust Creek Reservoir project. The proposed roadway projects include Highway N relocation below the ELCR dam, Highway VV extension to Knob Hill Road, 4,000 feet of improvements to intersections and turning lanes on Highway 5 for safety, plus widening and repaving of Highway 5 from Milan to Unionville. The proposal includes all roads to be paved and widened. All of these projects will make accessible the public use areas, one full service marina and two other boat ramps. In addition, there will be 30 miles of broadband provided utilizing acquired easements to provide service in this underserved area. The infrastructure will support the safety, accessibility, operation and economic vitality of the lake area, Sullivan and Putnam counties and the region. “This is a long-shot, but we feel optimistic about our chances,” NCMRWC Chairman Harve Rhodes said. “Green Hills and our project team put together a compelling application and we received 18 letters of support, including from Senator Blunt and Congressman Graves, Sullivan and Putnam County Commissions, Linn and Sullivan County Farm Bureaus, the State Farm Bureau, the cattlemen and many others. We are truly grateful.” Highway 5 from Milan to Unionville is a narrow, winding, hilly and shoulder-less road and is a major north/south arterial thoroughfare in Putnam and Sullivan counties connecting highways 6 and 136. Large trucks carrying hogs and materials to and from Smithfield Foods farms and packing plant make up 12 percent of the traffic on Highway 5. A normal road carries only 3 to 4 percent large truck traffic. Improvement of Highway 5 would be a major boon to both the economy and safety, according to the NCMRWC. Without the prescribed improvements being made, NCMRWC officials say both current and new residents of the ELCR will be practically isolated and far-removed from readily accessible emergency services. In addition, the vast majority of the more than 600 jobs created by the ELCR project are derived from recreational use, but without infrastructure to the reservoir that potential cannot be realized. This grant will assist in eliminating infrastructure shortcomings, thereby improving the quality of life for area residents and the 10-county region that will be served by the reservoir.

ROCK BARN EXHIBITS

The number of exhibits and exhibitors in the adult section of the Rock Barn area at the fair nearly matched the number of exhibits from a year ago with a minor increase in the number of exhibitors. Youth numbers were down slightly, but premiums being paid were close to last year. Exhibits from Sunnyview Nursing Home, Eastview Manor and Grundy County Learning Center were also on display, with those numbers also remaining close to a year ago. Ball-Kerr Fresh Preserving awards were given in both adult and youth divisions. Loretta Ray received first- and second-place recognition in the area of fruit preservation for her canned pear and apple pie filling entries. Marie Clark was awarded first place in vegetables for her corn entry with Mrs. Ray receiving second with a jalapeno entry. Jacob Hall received first for his kosher dill entry and Lana Snider was second with a relish entry. Soft spread awards were given to Pam Johnston for black raspberry jam and Mrs. Ray received second with an apricot jam entry. In the youth division, Elliana Gaunt received first place for fruits with an apple pie filling and first place for pickles with a dill bean item. Katelyn Clark received first in vegetables with V-8 juice and first in soft spread with apple butter. The Bessie Chambers Award for new exhibitors with the most entries in food-related categories in the adult division was given to Jacob Hall, who submitted five eligible entries. THE Daily Commuter Puzzle by Jacqueline E. Mathews

D ear Annie Written by Annie Lane

Send your questions for Annie Lane to dearannie@creators.com. To find out more about Annie Lane, visit the Creators Syndicate website at www.creators.com.

Dear Annie: On a yearly basis, my employer recognizes employees who have dedicated 10, 15, 20, etc. years of service as well as individuals who are retiring. These employees have their names published in local press and also receive a gift. This past year I completed my 10th year of service. While my name was published, I never received a gift. Everyone else received one, so it's not that the tradition stopped and I was unaware; mine was just somehow overlooked. My co-workers tell me I should ask about it, but I feel kind of awkward doing so. Is it tacky to contact the human resources department and ask about the gift? -- Feeling Forgotten Dear Feeling Forgotten: It's not tacky so long as you handle it with tact. Send a short and sweet email to the human resources department. Start by expressing gratitude for their recognizing you in the local press. Then ask about the gift, taking care not to make demands: It is, after all, a gift, not a right. So emphasize that you realize it's not something you're automatically entitled to, but you were just wondering if your not getting an anniversary gift

was intentional. Alternatively, if you feel too uncomfortable bringing the subject up yourself, you might ask a co-worker with whom you're close to do so on your behalf. Dear Annie: I am a good tipper. I always tip 20 percent for servers, pizza delivery guys, bartenders and baristas because they are serving me in some capacity. What I don't understand is the tip line on the credit card receipt when I get takeout or ice cream. Is a tip really expected? What is the difference between tipping the girl who hands me my takeout order and the girl behind the fast-food counter or the girl behind the gas station counter? We are not asked to tip these folks. I feel like a jerk when I draw through the tip line, but I just don't feel an additional 20 percent is earned. -- Confused at the Counter Dear Confused: You're not the only one. Many people are confused about whether or not they're expected to leave a tip for takeout. The reason you're not asked to tip employees at a gas station or fast-food restaurant is because those employees are making at least minimum wage. The

lines become blurrier in the case of getting takeout from restaurants. Many servers I've surveyed said that they depend on those tips, and stiffing them at the to-go counter is as much a problem as stiffing them for table service. But another factor is your state's laws regulating service-industry wages. So as much as I hate to say that it depends, well, it depends. I find that, when in doubt, I never regret erring on the side of generosity. Dear Annie: "Tipped Off" was inquiring about tipping at a doctor's office. You never heard of tipping at a doctor's office. You are correct, but it depends. You would never tip a nurse or a receptionist, or anyone fully employed by the doctor. As a massage therapist of 20 years, I can attest, most massage therapists are not fully employed by the doctor, which means that we do not receive a salary, health insurance, vacation time or sick time. The massage therapist also has to pay licensing fees, continuing education costs and liability insurance! The only way a doctor's "patient," who is also a massage therapist's "client," can know whether to tip or not is to ask how much of the service fee goes to the therapist. You may also ask if the therapist pays the doctor rent. -- Happy MT Dear Happy MT: Thanks for the tip! COPYRIGHT 2018 CREATORS.COM

Amazon delivers profits For years, Amazon was known as a company that brought in lots of revenue but very little profit, spending most of what it earned on building warehouses and making other investments. But that’s changing. For three consecutive quarters, the online retailer has reported profits of more than $1 billion. In its most recent quarter, it shot past $2 billion for the first time. Amazon’s growing profit comes mostly from its cloud computing business, which sells web services to companies and the government. At the unit, called

Amazon Web Services, profit jumped 79 percent from a year ago. Profitability is improving at its retail business, but costs remain high, especially as it expands internationally. Analysts at Benchmark expect Amazon’s cloud computing business to keep growing, writing that the company’s “profit engine” is “just getting started.” Amazon says its burgeoning advertising business, which sells ad space to companies that want to reach Amazon shoppers, is another growing profit stream for it.

BUSINESS

Business Briefs... CAPNCM Director Takes New Position

The executive director of the Community Action Partnership of North Central Missouri, located in Trenton, has taken a position as finance manager for the West Central Missouri Community Action Agency at Appleton City. Aaron Franklin began his new role on a part-time basis on Monday, July 23 and will assume his full-time duties on Monday, Aug. 13. Franklin has over 11 years of Community Action experience, including six years with CAPNCM. Before joining CAPNCM, Franklin was employed by US Bank at Princeton as its fiscal officer. Franklin said he is excited to be joining the West Central organization, which has over 330 staff members in a ninecounty area with an average annual budget of over $21 million. Franklin said the CAPNCM Board has formed a search committee, which is accepting applications for his position until Aug. 24. The board is scheduled to meet this week to discuss what will be done at the local office, including the possible naming of an interim director until someone is selected on a full-time basis.

Grundy Electric Holds Annual Meeting

A large crowd attended Grundy Electric Cooperative’s annual membership meeting held Thursday, Aug. 2 at the North Mercer R-3 School. GEC Community Foundation President Cliff Addison discussed the foundation and encouraged members to participate in Operation Round Up. Foundation Vice President Dennis Gutshall and trustee Tony Nelson assisted in presenting 15 fourth quarter grants, totaling $9,719 to area schools and organizations. Mercer County 4-H members led the pledge to the U.S. flag. GEC Operations Manager J.D. Pash offered the invocation. Corporate Development Manager Peggy Boulware acknowledged special guests. Cooperative Board President Dan Lentz presided over the business meeting and welcomed members. He announced that the board of directors approved a capital credit refund for the remaining allocation of 1984 and 25 percent of 2017 totaling $189,145.23. Capital credit checks will be given to members during Member Day events scheduled for Oct. 23, 24 and 25. General Manager Scott Wilson introrduced the board of directors. He also told mem-

bers that the cooperative adheres to the seven cooperative principals of voluntary and open membership, democratic member control, member economic participation, autonomy and independence, education and information, cooperation among cooperatives and the concern for community. He presented years of service awards to seven employees and also discussed reliability of service, vegetation management, a cost of service study and the cooperative’s commitment to “Zero Contacts.” Guest speakers Kendra Betz of Trenton and Ethan Billups of Ridgeway spoke about their experiences at the Youth Tour Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. Members re-elected three directors to each serve a threeyear term including incumbents Adrian Cox of Trenton, representing Area 1; Dan Lentz of Browning, representing Area 2; and Alan Guernsey of Bethany, representing Area 5. Members also approved a bylaw amendment which abolished the process of director nominations being made from the floor at annual meeting. The bylaws stipulate a member may still run for the board by contacting the nominating committee or by presenting a petition.

Grundy Electric Cooperative directors held a re-organizational meeting. Elected as officers were Lentz, president; Joe Hartley, vice president; Marvin Harding, secretary; Eric Woodard, assistant secretary; and Richard Moore, treasurer. Other board members include: Rodney Ewing, Guernsey and Cox. Prior to the business meeting, over 380 members and guests enjoyed the evening meal served by the Mercer County 4-H members. Entertainment was provided by The Marks Family from Jefferson

City. Members browsed the information booths and visited with employees of Grundy Electric Cooperative and Mid-States Services, LLC. Various booths exhibited products and services available to GEC members. The GEC Community Foundation, Inc. booth included a student display of educational grants and information on Operation Round Up. Joe Wilkinson and Lynne Shea of Associated Electric Cooperative Inc, displayed a “Generation Resources” booth.

WMH Sleep Lab Earns Accreditation

Wright Memorial Hospital’s Sleep Lab recently received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. To receive accreditation for a five-year period, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM. These standards address core areas such as personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care and quality assurance. Additionally, the sleep center’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine accredited a sleep disorders center for the first time in 1977. There are more than 2,600 AASM-accredited sleep centers across the country.
