Activities Gearing Up For Annual Event

TRENTON HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI

In just four weeks, Trenton High School graduates will be returning to town for the annual alumni activities. This year’s event will be held from Friday, Aug. 31 to Sunday, Sept. 2, with the THS Classes of 1968 and 1993 being recognized as 50- and 25-year graduates, respectively. Retired THS art instructor and guidance counselor Sara Gibson has been chosen as the 25-year class faculty honoree and will be recognized during various events throughout the weekend. Mrs. Gibson, who was a member of the THS faculty for 19 years, is best remembered for her southern drawl and her willingness to help students reach

their goals in preparation for the next levels of their lives. Her infectious laugh continues to be remembered by both students and staff with whom she came into contact. A native of Georgia, she came to Missouri with her family when her father and brother came to the A.T. Still University in Kirksville to study osteopathy. While a student at Stephens College in Columbia, Mrs. Gibson met her future husband, L.D., whom she married and moved with to L.D.’s home community of Spickard. The couple have three children, Elizabeth, who is the director of the Grundy County Health Department; Carrie,

who has an optometry practice in Illinois; and Lee, a member of the Class of 1993 who works for a construction company in College Station, TX. After her daughters were old enough to go to school, Mrs. Gibson went back to school as well and obtained a bachelor of science in education degree in art. She later earned a master’s degree in counseling. Her first teaching job was at Newtown-Harris and she then came to Trenton in 1986, where she spent 10 years in the classroom before becoming a guidance counselor. She retired in 2005 and since that time, she and her husband have done much traveling, something she had al-

ways wanted to do. She also spends her time painting and spoiling her grandchildren. Alumni activities will kick off on Friday, Aug. 31 with the all-alumni mixer at the Riverside Country Club, beginning at 6 p.m. The Class of 1974 will be hosting that event. There is also a home football game that evening, with Trenton taking on Lexington at 7 o’clock at C.F. Russell Stadium. Saturday’s events kick off with an open house from 9 a.m. to noon in the THS commons, hosted by the Class of See Alumni, Page 6

The Grundy County Health Department will be holding a school health fair, open to all K-12 students in the Trenton R-9, Pleasant View R-6, Laredo R-7, Grundy R-5 and Spickard R-2 school districts. The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9 at the First Christian Church. The health fair will include free dental, vision and scoliosis screenings from local health care providers. Free school supplies will also be available along with games and prizes. Those attending the health fair and completing the screening process will be eligible to attend a community pool party at the Trenton Family Aquatic Center later that evening. The health fair is being held in conjunction with the Trenton Bright Futures Back to School event, also planned on that day. Details regarding that event were published in a previous edition of the RepublicanTimes and will be included in Back to School information scheduled for publication in the newspaper on Tuesday, July 31.
