page 4, section 1 Trump will be joined in the backfield by Jaren Whitney, who makes the move from wide receiver to running back in 2019. Whitney had the secondhighest receiving yards total in school history last year, catching 32 balls for 684 yards and those numbers came after not even being targeted in the first two weeks of the season. Ultimately, Hixson felt Whitney’s sure hands would be more beneficial to Trenton in the backfield this season, so the senior is on the move. Trenton won’t hesitate to use him as a pass catcher, though, should the right situation arise.

Payden McCullough and Tyler Siemer have had opportunities with the ball in their hands as well as Trenton looks to have as many options as possible at what will be one of the most important positions on the field.

“Mark is a returning all-district player for us and so is Jaren Whitney,” Hixson said. “We have a mix of younger and older guys in there and I expect them to all do well when it’s their time. That’s what I have been telling them, ‘when it’s your time to shine, make sure you are getting it going’.”

On the line, Trenton will start Carson Burchett at right tackle and Jerrick Stotts, who had a tremendous offseason for the Bulldogs, at right guard. Noah Lewis will take the center position for Trenton.

Mark Trump was the Bulldogs’ leading rusher last season, carrying the ball 189 times for 872 yards and 11 touchdowns.

fall sports 2019 “We have Lewis, Stotts and Burchett from center to right tackle and they are all well-seasoned veteran guys,� Hixson said. “Jerrick Stotts has probably had the best camp since I have been here. He has worked hard in the weight room all summer long and then did some good things when we went up to Simpson to camp. He has great feet for a big kid. Then we have Carson next to him and expectations are set high for him this year.�

On the back side, Trenton will start Caleb Johnson or Kael Brock at left guard and Jake McNabb at left

tackle. Dalton Burchett will be at the tight end position to help bolster the line.

On the defensive side of the ball, Hixson continues to preach physical and aggressive play. Last season Hixson saw Trenton pushed around all too often. While the Bulldogs might not always be the most talented team on the field on Friday nights this fall, Hixson wants to see his team give their best fight each time out. “We need to be more physical than we were last year,� Hixson said. “We need to be more aggressive and the

intensity level has got to stay high on defense. When I watch film and I look at some stuff that (Trenton) did last year, it’s a combination of a lack of some fundamentals and intensity.

They don’t play with violent hands and there isn’t a feel of energy to get to a place. This year we want nine guys in a frame chasing the football when we watch film. If that happens, you are going to win more games than you lose.�

The biggest loss for Trenton comes at linebacker, where Jadan Whitney, an all-stater who led the Bulldogs with 114 total tackles last year, graduated. Lewis, Trump and McCullough will get the bulk of the time at the linebacker spots. While neither may be what Whitney was, Hixson hopes a combined effort can replicate the tackle production from those spots.

Up front, Stotts and Carson Burchett will anchor the line while Jackson and Dalton Burchett will play the end spots, looking to pres-

sure passers and seal the edge on running plays.

Whitney will handle the free safety position. Trenton is hoping the ball awareness and pass-catching hands he displayed last season will translate into interceptions in the secondary this year. Siemer is looking to slot in at free safety while Quincy Griffin and Canyon VonBurg, while inexperienced, will take over the cornerback positions, at least at the start of the season. “There isn’t a lot of game experience in the secondary, but they did a pretty decent job up at Simpson College,� Hixson said. “We have a lot of senior starters this year, so I want to make sure I can get some younger kids in and get them some experience and that is what we have back there in the defensive backs. Jaren has made a couple of plays up there at Simpson that kind of assured me that nobody is going to beat us deep.

While Hixson was brought in to turn the program around, he isn’t naive enough to think that the transition will happen overnight. The Grand River Conference’s defending champion (Milan) is returning the vast majority of its starters from last year’s campaign. The district is loaded with the defending Class 2 state runners-up, Lathrop, and Maryville, a state semifinalist team at the Class 3 level last year, sitting at the top. But there is plenty this Trenton team can do to lay the foundation for the future.

“I don’t know if there is any way you can gauge or grade effort and enthusiasm, but I think they lacked a little of that last year,” Hixson said. “They have a little spark to them and I want them to go out and compete. In a game against Lathrop, who lost in the state championship game last year, nobody expects us to do anything. I want to go out and set the bar in week one. I want us to play as physical as you can play, try to keep it as close as we can. We didn’t place in our conference and these guys played in the state championship game.

It’s a great challenge, we need to step up and set the bar.”

Trenton and Lathrop’s season-opening game is scheduled to kick off from C.F. Russell Stadium at 7 o’clock tonight.

Jaren Whitney, center, hauled in 32 passes for 684 yards and four touchdowns last season. The 684 receiving yards was the second-highest, single-season total in school history, but Whitney will move to a running back position this season to try and maximize his opportunities with the ball in his hands.

5 2018 Nathan Powell, a 1996 graduate of Princeton High School, has come Nathan Powell home, after 11 years as an assistant coach with the Maryville Spoofhounds, - first year 12 20 017 to coach his hometown high school football team. The Tigers are hoping Powell packed up some of Maryville’s tradition when he made the 84-mile Career Record: - 0-0 4 2016 trek to return home.

fall sports 2019 pionships, four state championships and two more state runner-up finishes. Maryville is currently riding a 61-game home winning streak.

While success like that is nearly impossible to replicate, it gives Powell a blueprint to follow at his alma mater.

“The style of practice we ran (at Maryville), I feel like, was very beneficial,” Powell said. “We had a freshman team that we kept with us at all times so everyone, freshman through senior, they all heard the same thing, they all got the same coaching from the same people and we are going to do that (at Princeton) with our junior high. So we are going to have our junior high with us so they hear the same coaching from the same guy their entire career. That just leads to continuity and a better program.”

Practices won’t be the only area where Maryville’s influence is felt, however. The Tigers will move to a Spoofhound-style offense as well - a drastic change from the passing-oriented offense that Thomas Hotmer installed in the program over the last three seasons.

“It’s going to be very, very different,” Powell said of his offense when comparing it to what Princeton has done in recent seasons. “We are going to be a run-based Wing T team. We are going to be Maryville East over here. We are going to be focused on running the ball and getting the ball to a bunch of different kids. It’s been a mentality change a little bit. We have to focus on being more physical and a little tougher up front. We have simplified things a lot though and we are going to get really good at what we know how to do and we will see where it takes us.”

Austin Kelly was Princeton’s starting quarterback at the beginning of last year, but suffered an injury early on, taking him out for nearly the entire season. He will again be given the reigns to the offense, however, while Cam Hartley, who was an allconference honorable mention selection as a quarterback while filling in

for Kelly, will move to tight end in Powell’s offensive scheme. “(The quarterback) was one of the big questions I had coming in,” Powell said. “To have kids like Austin and Cam, kids who have played quite a bit and kids who are leaders to these other kids, it’s fantastic to have.”

Princeton will have plenty of options for Kelly to feed the ball to in Powell’s offense. Ben Berwanger, Justin Rhoades, Riley Rhoades, Eli Henke, Ethan Glenn and Aiden Houck have all seen time carrying the ball for the Tigers over the summer and in the early practices for the Tigers.

“We have four or five guys who can step in and do a lot for us,” Powell said. “We aren’t asking too much of any of them. One night, one of them might have a big night and another night, somebody else might.

That’s the beauty of this system and that’s kind of what we are trying to get implemented.”

On the defensive side of the ball the Tigers will remain a 4-3 team, making little changes to what they were on that side of the ball a year ago. Last year the Tigers allowed an average of just over 22 points per game and fired two shutouts while limiting two other opponents to 17 or fewer points.

“Defensively it’s a little different from the offensive side in that we don’t have to change very much,” Powell said. “They were running a very similar scheme to what we were running in Maryville and that’s a

scheme that I put some tweaks on to kind of get implemented here.”

Hartley, a unanimous all-conference linebacker and a three-year starter for the Tigers, will anchor the defensive unit. Nick Grooms was a first team all-conference defensive lineman and Zeb Schwartzkopf is back after earning honorable mention all-conference honors in the secondary last season. That gives the Tigers a returning all-conference performer at every level of the defense.

“In this conference, and really anywhere, if you want to be successful you have to stop the run. So we are going to focus on stopping the run first and with someone as talented as Cam right there in the middle it’s really, really nice to have. We’ve got some experience up front and some good size up front and they have flown around the ball. They have done a fantastic job of picking up the little changes we have made. They have room to grow, but we are looking for our defense to kind of be a strong point for us.”

Powell isn’t expecting Princeton to turn into a Class 1 version of Maryville overnight. He knows the process that comes with building a program and he knows the amount of work it takes to be that successful.

For now, Princeton is focused on the little things like fundamentals. Powell will take this first season weekby-week, hoping to see his team improve a little each time it steps on the field.

“It’s as simple as (getting better every game),” Powell said. “It’s the boring answer, but it’s the process of getting better. We have to learn to practice and learn to execute and to be disciplined and to rely on each other. I think those are generic answers, but they are things that have to happen to be successful. For me the number one thing is focusing on one week at a time and focusing on getting better in that one week.”

Princeton opens the season tonight with a road trip to Faucett to take on Mid-Buchanan. Kickoff is set for 7 o’clock.

Trenton and Maysville shared the crown with one conference loss each in 2016, Princeton ran the table to win the title in 2017 and Milan was undefeated within the GRC last year to claim the championship.

If what the coaches believe ahead of year four, 2019 will be the year to break that trend as the defending champion Milan Wildcats sit atop the coaches poll with 48 points and a league-best six first-place votes.

1. Milan Wildcats The biggest reason for Milan being voted to the top by the coaches is the Wildcats ran the table last year with a team of mostly underclassmen. Jamuel Pagan was the exception as Milan must replace the first-team unanimous all-GRC running back this year.

Pagan’s absence is a factor, but Dominic Dabney is back and should see a production increase as the nowfeature back for the ’Cats. Quarterback Ryan Dabney is returning and will have no shortage of targets with wide receivers Dre Morehead and Hunter Shaw and tight end Alexis Roman all back.

Defensively Milan has most of its starters back again as well and the Wildcats limited opposing teams to 7.5 points per game in Grand River Conference contests. The defending champs are definitely in the driver’s seat heading into 2019.

2. South Harrison Bulldogs Milan’s biggest scare last season?

A 6-0 escape at home against South Harrison. South Harrison had a strong season last year, finishing 5-2 in GRC play and the two losses were painfully close. The Purple and White Bulldogs fell 6-0 to Milan and 23-22 to Gallatin.

Before South Harrison can make the jump to the top of the league, though, it must replace Cody Weller, an all-conference performer at quarterback. Collin Haffey and Graydyn Linthacum are both returning, however, and both joined Weller on the all-GRC team as running back selections. Brayden Sunderman and Colby Yslas are also back, giving South Harrison plenty of athletes to fit into new roles.

3. Gallatin Bulldogs Gallatin finished runner-up in the conference standings last year, losing only its match-up with Milan in league play. Milan edged Gallatin 16-7 in what proved to be the conference championship game.

Gallatin has a lot to replace, however, after Graydee Rains graduated in May. Rains was a unanimous firstteam all-conference performer on both sides of the ball a year ago. Expect Aidan Adkison and Haden Bradford to be charged with picking up most of Rains’ production this year.

4. Trenton Bulldogs Trenton is looking for a bounce back season after finishing just 3-4 in the Grand River Conference last season. New Head Coach Kevin Hixson

has a track record of success in the league, guiding Gallatin to GRC titles in 1997 and 1998.

Trenton returns quarterback Sam Schilling and fullback Mark Trump, who was the team’s leading rusher last year.

5. Princeton Tigers The other new head coach in the Grand River Conference is Nathan Powell, who takes over the Tigers just two years removed from a conference championship season.

Austin Kelly was supposed to take over for Andrew Smith last season, but an injury cost him most of the year. He will get his chance again this year, however. On the defensive side of the ball, Cam Hartley, a unanimous first time linebacker last year, will anchor the Tigers in the middle of the field.

6. Maysville Wolverines Maysville will look to take another step forward this season as quarterback Mallen Cole comes into the season with another year of experience under his belt.

The Wolverines will have to find some help for Cole, however, as his favorite target - wide receiver Cy Uthe - and running back Morgan Tait both graduated.

7. Putnam County Midgets Putnam County will look to improve in their second year under Head Coach Clyde Bondy. Bondy’s team won just two games last season but, with a year of experience in the system, Putnam County hopes to take a step forward this year.

The Midgets will be replacing quarterback Levi Fowler, but expect Tony Bondy to be one of the better linebackers in the GRC this season.

1. Polo Panthers Polo is also entering the second season under its head coach. Reid Stephens took over the Panther program last year as Polo endured an 010 season. Despite not winning a game, Polo played Maysville, Trenton and Putnam County close.

Wyatt Seager is back and should be the go-to guy for the Panthers, but the graduation of Joseph Hillburn will hurt the Panthers up front.

We had a quick change here this summer with Coach (Chase Roberts) leaving right at the start of July. But not much is going to change. We are going to run the same stuff and do a lot of the same things that we did before. Obviously we have a lot of returning skill guys on our team, including our quarterback (Steven Whillhite), who set state records last year. Most of our leading receivers are back, so we are still going to sling the ball around. We have a lot of high expectations this year coming off of last year. I am really looking forward to (the season) with a good group of seven seniors that we have out this year.

“The history of the program is not going to go away with any graduating class,” Hultman said.

Despite losing five starters that made up for all but one of the top six spots in the lineup, the 2019 season still came anyway and Trenton is still the three-time defending Grand

When you are looking at a season, don’t focus on the entire season, don’t focus on what’s in the past, but focus on the next play, the next game. If you keep it simple like that, you are going to have more fun, you are going to be a better player and you are going to be a better teammate.”

To Trenton’s benefit, the Bulldogs return short stop Maci Moore, who was arguably the best player in the state at the Class 2 level last year as only a sophomore. Moore set school records last year with 10 home runs and 51 RBIs. She should easily eclipse the career records in those categories this season and still have a year left to play.

“Maci is a phenomenal weapon,” Hultman said. “What you ask her to do, as a coach, she is going to do it.

She might not always do it with a smile on her face, but she is going to do it.”

Where Moore fits into the lineup this year will take a little more work than last year when she slotted into the number three spot and had no worries about not getting pitches with Salem Croy behind her.

“Offensively (Assistant) Coach (Kameron) Cool and I are trying to figure out how we can score the maximum amount of runs. If we put everyone in front of Maci and the bases aren’t loaded, the other team is able to do some things to get around her. So, that’s still very fluid and it will probably be fluid most of the season trying to figure out where to put all of our offensive pieces.”

The likely bet is that Lexi Whitaker, the team’s starting centerfielder in 2018, will slot in behind Moore to give her some protection.

Whitaker displayed a power bat last year as well, finishing the season with six home runs and 27 RBIs. She belted a pair of bombs in Trenton’s state quarterfinal victory at Holden.

Whitaker was a third baseman as a freshman before transitioning to centerfield last year. She is on the move again this year, going behind

the plate to take over at catcher for Croy.

“I think (Whitaker) is (moving) for the team,” Hultman said. “I think if you were to ask Lexi what she wants to do she would tell you she wants to roam the outfield and make the catches that we’ve seen her make, but we need her behind the plate.

She is looking great throwing runners out, she’s looking great blocking the ball and receiving the ball. So she is really progressing well and we are probably going to have one of the best catchers in the GRC.” Whitaker will be on the receiving end of pitches thrown by McKayla Blackburn who, after starting in the outfield last season, is getting her chance to be the team’s featured pitcher. The senior threw 38 innings last year, posting a 1.47 ERA with 39 strikeouts. She got some experience in a pressure situation, entering Trenton’s state quarterfinal game with the bases loaded after an injury to Ainsley Tolson. Blackburn put out the fire in that game and proved capable of pitching well in high leverage situations. “(Blackburn) is going to get her turn in the circle and there are probably a lot of teams out there that the number one thing they would take off our team would be McKayla and her pitching ability,” Hultman said.

“With her we will compete in every single game. She is developing and working on all of her pitches. McKayla, Lexi and I are trying to set up hitters. We are going to try and maximize what we do defensively so we can take advantage of the talent that McKayla possesses.”

Chandler Lynch, who started last season at second base, is the only other returning starter for Trenton.

Last year she acted as a secondary leadoff hitter at the number nine spot, but will move to the top of the lineup this season to help set the deck for the big bats in Moore and Whitaker.

“Physically, Chandler has grown a lot since last year,” Hultman said. “I feel like she is taller and stronger.

We don’t really have down where she will be playing yet, but she has a whole year of varsity experience and we are going to be looking to her to be a leader by example. Last year she was hitting at the bottom of the lineup and this year she is going to be hitting toward the top of the lineup, so we will see how she adjusts to that. But, she is a rock and she is going to continue to be a rock for us throughout the season.”

In addition to those four, Trenton will have five first-year varsity starters on the field when the season opens. Teya Cooksey, Gracyn Rongey and Chloe Harris were on the varsity roster last season, but the trio combined for just 10 varsity plate appearance. All three will be thrust into the varsity lineup this year.

“Those girls were on the varsity team last year,” Hultman said. “They got to watch a lot and get in as pinch runners and courtesy runners and play the outfield every now and then.

So, yes, they are first-year starters,

but they are also coming in with a lot of experience from playing when they were seven years old and traveling to Kansas City to play. They have watched and played a lot of softball.”

Summer Martin, Jenna Reeter and Jaycie Griffin are in competition for the final two varsity starting spots, though an injury to Griffin will give Martin and Reeter the spots for at least the start of the season.

Trenton may be leaning on younger players, but the goal is still the same for the Bulldogs - winning championships.

“We want to win conference, we want to win districts and after that we will take it one game at a time,” Hultman said. “We’ve talked about trying to climb a mountain and playing our best ball down the stretch.

We don’t want to take any game for granted and we want to learn from every game, win or lose.”

Trenton opens the season on Monday, Sept. 2, when they travel to take on Putnam County in GRC play.

ammy Ockenfels returned to the helm of the Trenton girls tennis program last season and inherited a team that was losing four players with at least three years of varsity experience. So, by comparison, replacing three varsity starters this year doesn’t seem all that bad.

Three of Trenton’s top four players from last season’s team graduated in May, creating another need for some rebuilding for the Bulldogs. “When we came out last year, they had just won districts the year before and had a really strong team,� Ockenfels said. “That just helped build those other girls from last year and then those girls that we had last year have helped build the girls we have this year. We have three of our top six back and I really expect a lot out of them.�

Trenton’s top returner was its best player record-wise last season. Lexi Gott played the number five spot for the Bulldogs last year, going 10-2 in singles play and posted a 15-8 record in doubles play. Both the 10 singles

fall sports 2019 wins and 15 doubles wins were tops for Trenton. When paired with Emma Gilham in doubles play, Gott scored a third-place finish at the individual district tournament, earning herself all-district honors. She and Gilham also medaled in both the Cameron and Benton tournaments.

Another 25-win season will be tough to replicate as Gott will jump up the lineup and in competition, but Ockenfels sees another strong showing on the way for the now-junior.

“It will be a challenge because you just see higher caliber players at that stage,” Ockenfels said. “Last year I put Lexi with Emma Gilham (in doubles play) and they really had a lot of success, even through districts.

I think that will help Lexi this year as she moves up. I still expect a lot from her. That’s what it is about tennis. It’s individual and it’s about who can dig deep and perform in the end.”

Also back is Kendall Crowley who, position-wise, is Trenton’s

leading returnee after factoring in at the number-three spot for Trenton a year ago. Crowley hovered around .500 in singles and doubles play and, like Gott, is expected to move up in the lineup this season.

As the team’s lone senior, Crowley will also take on some of the leadership role for the team.

“Kendall is my only senior and she is going to be an asset,” Ockenfels said. “The great thing about her is she is just such a great team player. She is already just trying to form different outings outside of tennis for the team. She just gets everyone acting together as a team and having fun as a team. All of that just really helps your team overall and that is what a coach wants.”

Morgan Dolan played primarily at the number six spot for Trenton last season and finished the year with 15 combined wins between singles and doubles play. Right behind her are Mallory Sole and Gwyneth Foster, both of whom had limited varsity ac-

tion in tournament play.

Trenton has a deep team with 18 girls out, so finding players to fill out the varsity lineup won’t be the problem; it will be finding the ones who can pick up victories at the bottom of the lineup that could swing a dual one way or another.

“It’s great to have numbers,” Ockenfels said. “They know what number they are once we have our challenge matches and then it is up

to them, how hard they want to work, for what spot they get. Tennis isn’t like other sports where I pick my starters. They know going in what spots are open. It’s also nice because we have two tournaments that are top eight this year, so it adds a little extra motivation for those girls in that spot to get some varsity time.”

Trenton opens play on Tuesday, Sept. 3, traveling to Carrollton.

t is a transition year for the Trenton High School volleyball team as the Bulldogs have a new coach tasked with replacing five varsity starters who graduated after last season.

Pam Bowden becomes the eighth coach in the Trenton volleyball program’s history and is immediatly saddled with finding answers. The Bulldogs have been on the rise in the past three years, posting the only two double-digit win totals in school history in the last two seasons and reaching the district semifinals in each of the last three seasons.

But the group that spurred the program’s first measure of success is now gone and Bowden must replace five starters, three of which were all-district performers a year ago. “We have gone to camp over the summer to try and build some skills and just build some teamwork,� Bowden said. “We are just trying to pull everybody together because we do have some big shoes to fill.�

fall sports 2019 Trenton’s lone returning starter is Allena Allen. Allen’s 40 kills from a year ago was fourth on the team and marks the leading returning number in that category. She will be called upon to step up into a bigger role this season, though, as she gets more attack opportunities at the net. Graduate Karli Provorse was Trenton’s primary attacker a year ago, getting nearly 500 chances at the net. Allen, by comparison, garnered 157 attack attempts. “Allena is a starter and she is a good leader,� Bowden said. “She builds up the younger players and the seniors around her that maybe didn’t get as much playing time last year.

She has a lot of good advice for her teammates.�

Evy McCullough also will be a big threat at the net for the Bulldogs.

Last year she got marginal experience as a sophomore, but already showed raw potential. Her height and length make her a natural at the middle hitter position and she should

get a full season of varsity playing time this year. “Evy does have a lot of good height and the ability to jump,� Bowden said. “She played some club ball this summer and that will help her. I think she will be a force up front this year with blocks and kills.�

Behind that duo, Trenton returns Mackenzie Klinginsmith, Libby Fewins and Olivia Roberts, all of whom saw time in around 40 varsity sets last year. That group will likely provide Trenton with some new starters. “Mackenzie is a very good leader and she is very supportive of the other girls when she is on the floor,�

Bowden said. “Oliva Roberts has also stepped up over the summer I feel like. Libby is very aggressive. I think all of those girls really gel and mesh well with (Allen and McCullough).�

Trenton has also seen gains from Bekah Allen and Kenzie Yuille and those two will likely factor into the

varsity rotation for the Bulldogs.

Trenton will need to find a consistent setter somewhere in that group to feed Allen and McCullough at the net. Just prior to last season, Trenton lost its primary setter to a move and the Bulldogs regressed by two wins rather than improving on the previous year.

The biggest thing for Trenton, once Bowden identifies the players who will make up the varsity team, is finding which players work best together and discovering what groups fit together the best. In addition to wanting to knock off a few teams Trenton has played closely in recent years, the biggest goal for the Bulldogs will be growing as a team on a match-by-match basis. “As a team goal at volleyball camp (the girls) picked out some specific teams that they have played closely with in the past and they want to try to beat them this year,� Bowden said. “I think it is going to be a season where we just go match-by-match,

though, and see improvements. For example, at camp this summer, from the time we walked in on Friday to the time we left on Sunday, there was a lot of growth. Just working on skills and finding where different players fit on the floor.�

Trenton will hit the floor for the first time on Tuesday, Sept. 3, traveling to Lawson to battle the Cardinals. The first serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.

he Trenton High School girls golf team enters 2019 with five returning golfers from last year’s team. The lone loss from a season ago, however, was Werthen Gass - a three-time state qualifier.

That leaves seniors Maci Henson and Oakley Madden at the top of the lineup for Trenton. Both players are entering their fourth season for the Bulldogs and it will be up to them, most likely, to extend Trenton’s recent streak of sending at least one player to the state tournament.

Henson has been right there in terms of making it to state, advancing to the sectional tournament in each of the past two seasons.

“Maci is just so long off the tee,” Trenton Coach Travis Mullenix said.

“She is able to play parts of the course that other girls never even see. We just need to work on her short game a little and, if we do that, I think she will be more than capable of competing for a trip to state.”

Madden meanwhile, will be looking to move on past districts for the first time in her senior season.

“Oakley has been close,” Mullenix said. “She had kind of a rough start to her district (tournament) last year.

Hopefully she can gain some more confidence through the season and really work to try and have a better district tournament.”

No doubt, getting a year of experience last year helped our pitcher, Lauren Krohn, out tremendously. We had to rely on her really heavily to throw almost every single pitch for us. She only gained from it and she played most of the season with a fractured growth plate in her leg that we didn’t know about, so she really had to push through. That experience is only going to help her this year. We are bringing in a lot of new faces and we have a big freshman class that is really talented and has a lot of experience as well, so they are going to help us out on the field too. I think that the (Grand River Conference) is pretty wide open. I can think of at least four teams off the top of my head that really have a shot there at the top. We know it’s going to be tough at the top, but we think that we are right in the mix.

We have 14 girls out this year and we are upperclassmen-heavy. I’m looking for those girls to step in where I need them and help lead the team. So far, they have done a great job. Our fielding and batting will be fine. Our pitching will be the key. Hannah Garcia, who pitched last year, is out for the season with a knee injury so we have had some girls step into that role. We just have to find some consistency throwing strikes. After taking a couple of years off from coaching softball, I am looking forward to the season. The girls have worked really hard and are ready to start competing.

This is my first year as the Grundy County baseball coach. This fall season will be a lot about getting to know the kids and them getting to know me. We have already implemented new philosophies that the young men are working on understanding and executing. The team is a well balanced team as far as age of students. We have a couple of older kids that we are going to be looking at to be the leaders of the team and hold up expectations. We had a good summer season, actually. We played really well, hit the ball really well, had good defense and won five out of the seven games that we played. So, I am expecting to see them continue what they did this summer with the good hitting and I am expecting them to be good leaders this year. Really we should be up there toward the top of the HDC. North Harrison will be up there, but really they aren’t even as strong as they have been in the past. Tri-County is going to be a big rival for us. We battled them this summer and I see them being really good competition for us as usual, too. We have high expectations this year.

This year we have lost three seniors, but we have a lot of youth back. We have really improved greatly and this year I think we are going to be a contender and really fight for that conference championship - both the regular season and tournament. We have three girls who can really throw well for us. Carly Turner is coming back and she is a sophomore and threw the majority of the season for us last year. We also have Lexi Wyant, who is a junior, and Lucy Turner, who is a freshman, and they can all throw pretty well. Offensively, I am really stressing hitting this season. It hasn’t been a big priority lately, so I’m hoping every single girl in our lineup can hit. That’s what we are really focusing on, being a hitting team and getting some girls on base and being aggressive. I’m really excited to see what these girls can do once they get out on the field.

(Our players) are very nice young guys, first of all. They are great young men and they are deeply passionate about the school and about playing baseball - that’s why they are here.
