A Yuletide potpourri You busy this Yuletide season? Me, too. So, this is a collection of random thoughts and notes collected for no particular purpose.

Most involve the grandkids. I can’t claim all that follows to be original (and even when so, much embellishment naturally occurs …literary license, you know). These tidbits are shared here just for grins, best read with more than a little eggnog: My son met his fiancé on the internet, but my 6-year-old grandson isn’t about to be outdone. Bored while standing in line, he blurted out: “Who wants to be my girlfriend?” When two likewise bored little girls raised their hands, he later told his mom he just picked the one he liked best and away they went. (Epilogue: two days later, he was a bachelor again) Here’s a shockingly true yuletide story: The Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga is using a novel way to cut back on its electric bill this year. They’ve hooked up their Christmas tree to an eel. The guy in charge of the aquarium’s audio visual needs, Joey Turnipseed, explains: “Whenever Miguel (that’s the eel’s name) discharges electricity, sensors in the water deliver the charge to a set of speakers. The the Editor s ike speakers convert the discharge into the sound you hear and the festively flashing lights.”

A roller skating party was part of the celebration for my 7-year-old granddaughter last Saturday at Cameron. The oldsters began reminiscing

by Darryl Wilkinson about old-fashioned fun -- ice skating outdoors on the pond, soft landings in snowdrifts falling out of swings, and snow sleds tethered to a long rope pulled behind a tractor. One little guy turned wide-eyed, taking this all in, before muttering, “I sure wish I’d gotten to know you sooner!”

My daughter is expecting a third child come February and it’s physically obvious. With so many nieces and nephews taking notice, sometimes the questions can put you on edge. I read where a second grader once came home from school and opened the conversation by saying, “We learned how to make babies today.” After recovering from a bit of surprise, the reply was an unsteady, “Well, er, that’s interesting …how do you make babies?” Without hesitation, the youngster said, “It’s simple. Change ‘y’ to ‘i’ and add ‘es’.”

Worried about overeating this holiday season? What this country needs is more truth in labeling. For instance, if you take a break from shopping at some fried chicken fast food joint, the label on the bucket should read: “If your gut sticks out so far that you can’t hold this bucket of thighs and wings close enough to read the label, then move along, “Santa” …you shouldn’t be eating this.”

We thought decorating our house for Christmas would be a great way to entertain and involve our eight grandchildren. Wrong, again. After fighting over whose turn was it to pump the player piano, the fight shifted across the room to who was next to pound away at grandpa’s word processor. Once the little girl got behind the keyboard, she defended her post by diligently pounded away for quite a long time. She said she was writing a story. “What’s it about?” ...to which she replied, “I don’t know. I can’t read.”

Overheard at the shopping mall between what had to be a husband and wife: “There’s not a dime’s difference between us in the money we spend. The only distinction is the way we spend it. I think about it, and you don’t.”

Help me if you can. The countdown to Christmas eve is just seven days and I’ve yet to get a present for my better half. I’ve been asking around. All the other husbands at the Christmas parties so far offer their condolences (they’re right there with me, rowing upstream in the same boat without a paddle). I guess after so many years us guys try to get by with “It’s the thought that counts” without counting the lack of thought (seven more days -- take heart, men; seven more days!).

Evidently, there was a big confrontation between two sisters over what constitutes the color of red last week. So, when coloring in the coloring book, I began pointing out something and to ask what color it was. She would tell me and was always correct. At last, she tired and headed out the door, saying, “Pops... I really think you should try to figure out these colors yourself!”

So maybe another coloring book isn’t the best Christmas gift this year. It’s hard for grandparents to get just the right gift for each grandchild, isn’t it? On the other hand, and for the record, I can’t remember a single thing my own grandma or pa ever gave to me for Christmas …but their love.

That’s what makes Christmas the very best. Merry Christmas!

In shadow of impeachment, trade deals gain steam b y E r icB o h l

While the political media focuses on the impeachment saga in Congress, the Trump Administration has been making progress on two major trade negotiations. Tensions with China appear to have eased substantially with the announcement of a “Phase One” trade deal.

This initial deal will cover some of the largest disagreements between the world’s top two economic powerhouses. The U.S., Mexico and Canada also appear close to finalizing the modernization of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

In both deals, agriculture stands to gain more than any other sector of the U.S. economy.

Preliminary reports say Chinese negotiators agreed to increase U.S. ag purchases to at least $40 billion annually over the next two years.

If the deal comes to fruition, it would represent at least a 500 percent increase from current

annual sales of about $8 billion.

It would even almost double pre-trade-war sales. In 2017, the year before the tariff battles began, U.S. farmers exported about $24 billion worth of agricultural goods to China.

Many farmers are hesitant to get too excited, though, until pen goes to paper and goods are actually delivered. Several times in the past, Chinese buyers have reneged on their promises and purchases at the last minute. The Trump Administration says it expects to sign the China agreement in Washington the first week of January. It would go into effect 30 days after signing.

The U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will modernize the quarter-century-old NAFTA agreement. American businesses have long sought to update the agreement for the modern economy. The original deal did not even address online sales or data, as the digital economy was still in its infancy.

The deal will increase access to Mexican and Canadian markets for American farmers exporting dairy, eggs and poultry.

Trade with these two countries supports nearly 240,000 jobs in Missouri. In 2017, it generated $7.8 billion in exports of total goods from Missouri.

The International Trade Commission stated that USMCA would have “a positive impact on the U.S. economy,” raising U.S. GDP by $68.2 billion. The agreement is particularly important for farm families. According to the U.S. Trade Representative, 20% of farm income is directly related to international trade.

U.S. farmers and ranchers still have much more ability to supply goods to the world. Hopefully these deals are only the first of many that can expand our markets and improve the bottom line of Missouri farm families.

How to address crime, guns B y S t a t e S en. Da n H eg em a n

A growing number of people want to see action taken against what is seen as a rise in crime in our state. It seems any time there is a shooting in a major city in America, the first things we hear afterward are calls for stricter gun control. Unfortunately, a simple “one size fits all” solution is not the answer.

Missouri is a perfect example of the diversity that makes this country so great. The bulk of our state is rural, with plenty of small towns and acres of farmland. On the other end of the spectrum are the major metropolitan areas that sit on either end of the state. There are approximately as many people living in the Kansas City, St. Louis and Springfield metro areas as there are in the rest of the state.

Herein lies the challenge.

What may work for a bigger city does not necessarily translate well in small-town Missouri.

What really sits at the core

Preparing for the upcoming legislative session he eve of the legislative session reminds me of an era when there was a more organized effort to find, efore the start of the session, icameral and iparti san solutions to the state’s most pressing problems. his year s session faces some huge is sues including ur an gun violence, health care coverage, highway funding pro lems, teenage vaping and the growth of secret money in political campaigns. ut on vaping and firearms, ov. ike arson essentially has declared it s up to the leg islature to find solutions.

I m not optimistic comprehensive solu tions can e achieved y legislators dur ing a frantic session that lasts slightly more than four months. hile individual lawmakers can pro pose bills on those issues, what has been missing for several years before the start of a legislative session has een compre hensive solutions drafted by bipartisan coalitions of lawmakers from oth cham bers that arise from lengthy, statewide pu lic hearings. ecades ago, some ma or issues often were su ects of oint committee meet ings and hearings across the state efore a legislative session began. There were

several advantages to this approach.

Out-of-town hearings made it easier for experts and citizens from across the state to testify. Those hearings allowed more time for testimony as opposed to commit tee sessions during the legislative session that are restricted to the few hours when the cham ers are not in session. ithout eing distract ed by the hundreds of bills they face during the ses sion, committee mem ers had more time to focus on by Phill the issue at hand and to Brooks talk among themselves to find ipartisan solutions. inally, a oint committee composed of House and Senate members was in a better situation to craft proposals to avoid the ouse enate conflicts which so often derail ills in the final weeks of a session like the prescription drug monitoring is sue that has stymied the House and Senate.

I saw a demonstration of these advantages a couple of decades ago at the con clusion of extensive oint committee meet ings on medical malpractice lawsuits. ne of the leading conservative advo

cates for lawsuit limits told me he came to realize that a ma or cause of malpractice lawsuits was, indeed, medical failures. ut he said it was not caused y ad doc tors. Instead, he said he learned it was a result of evolving medical technology that allowed higher risk surgeries for which there was a higher chance of failure.

Unfortunately, for the most part, oint com mittees have ecome a ghost of the legislative past. A ma or reason has been abandonment of ouse enate oint rules that created stand ing oint committees. ow, oint commit tees are established by statutes that must be signed by the governor. But that’s different from oint committees esta lished at the start of a General Assembly. ith term limits, I suspect few law makers remem er the importance of oint rules. Some may not even realize that the legislature once had oint rules. he legislature a andoned oint rules ecause of a ouse enate fight over whether to allow ills introduced in the first year of a two year eneral Assem ly

to e carried over into the second year.

It was a grid lock issue etween the two cham ers that caused them give up adopt ing having oint rules, thus a andoning standing oint committees. hey did not imagine that with term limits, lawmakers would forget a out the value of oint rules.

With fewer years in the statehouse because of term limits, I sense legislators have not developed the year long attach ment to Jefferson ity. I find far fewer legislators in their apitol offices etween sessions than before term limits. That return to a truly part-time legislature was an o ective of some term limit support ers. But, it probably has lessened interest in committee sessions throughout the year. f course, another ma or difference is the deep ideological divide etween the two parties that makes ipartisan solu tions y oint committees more difficult than before term limits.

Why was Wilson, with a medical marijuana card, jailed in Daviess County for pot possession?

A Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper stopped Jamie Wilson in November for a traffic violation after he overtook a tractor trailer on a highway in Daviess County. he patrolman discovered ounces of mari uana in il son s pickup truck and another ounces of pot in a ackpack near ilson s year old grandson, ac cording to court records.

Wilson, who lives in Trenton went efore rd ircuit resid ing Judge Ryan Wesley Horsman on ec. to answer charges that included illegally possessing pot and child endangerment. e entered a not guilty plea.

But here’s the plot twist: Wilson is authorized by the state of Missouri to use or possess mariuana. e is also medically ex empt and permitted to cultivate mari uana. And he should not have een remanded to ail in Daviess County. edical mari uana use is now legal in Missouri. And tens of thousands of Missourians with an array of health issues already have turned to canna is since the state authorized patient cards this summer. ut the lack of legal clarity surrounding the state s medical mari uana program has left pa tients, law enforcement officers and officials in a state of confu sion over what constitutes legal possession. atients with medical mari uana cards issued y the is souri Department of Health and enior ervices may consume, possess or cultivate mari uana with the proper authorization. ut licenses for dispensaries won’t be issued until the end of next month. ntil then, selling mari uana is still illegal. ossessing a cer tain amount is not. he slow rolling process has

Wilson was also hit with three misdemeanor charges for pos session of drug paraphernalia, overtaking a vehicle and failure to provide proof of insurance.

Article of the issouri on stitution says the Department of ealth and enior ervices may impose possession limits, but the restrictions can t e less than a day supply, which e uates to a out ounces.

Wilson did not have his medical mari uana card with him as re uired the night he was arrest ed, ut his medical exemptions were authorized by the state, said yle isher, ilson s pu lic defender. isher produced ilson s card in court, ut ilson s , ond, filed after his initial arrest,

was revoked last month when he admitted to a bond supervisor that he was still smoking pot for medical reasons. ast week, a udge denied Fisher’s motion to dismiss. ilson remained in ail for weeks with a , ail efore his release ec. when Judge Horsman lowered the bond to its original amount. ilson s next court appearance is Jan. . edical mari uana advocate Nate Bullman helped organized a protest on ilson s ehalf ec. in aviess ounty. ullman said Wilson was within his rights to possess mari uana.

“There is absolutely nothing that Mr. Wilson did when he was pulled over that violated the law,” ullman said. “ e was protected y his card.” isher, the pu lic defender, said Wilson was in possession of ust under ounces of pot. echnically, ilson didn t reak the law. o why was he locked up on felony charges ilson s case highlights the contradictory hodgepodge of fed eral, state and local mari uana laws. And he’s paying a steep price for issouri s failure to provide clarity. i son, the prosecuting at torney, said she is not allowed to comment on pending cases, ut she acknowledged the legal uagmire that s playing out as the state continues to implement its voter approved medical mari uana program.

“I do understand that there’s some am iguity with the law,” she said.

In Missouri, patients with a valid medical mari uana card are allowed to possess up to 8 ounces of mari uana, according to state officials. aw enforce ment officers are not permitted to ask where the mari uana was o tained or re uest to see a re ceipt for the purchase of the su stance.

Pot does not have to be sealed in packages and can e in the person s home, vehicle or in their possession. Apparently, the state patrol didn’t get the memo.

A bout 15- 20 people showed up on the lawn of the Daviess County Courthouse on Dec. 3 to protest the arrest of Jamie W ilson, as reported in the Dec. 4 edition of the North Missourian.

Prosecutor’s response… hen asked y this newspaper for comment, aviess ounty rosecutor Annie i son responded as follows “ y office cannot make comments a out the particular facts of a case. I do elieve it is important to note that the defendant is not in custody and is currently on ond.

“Amendment to the issouri onstitution carves out very specific exceptions for the possession of mari uana. hese excep tions are laid out in detail in the Amendment, as well as the Missouri epartment of ealth regulations enacted at the direction of Amendment . Among these regulations are packaging and la eling re uirements, limitations on possession, and informa tion a out dispensaries. here are currently no licensed dispen saries in the tate. ari uana remains a controlled su stance under both Missouri and Federal law, and laws about possession of mari uana remain in effect, regardless of Amendment .”

According to the highway patrol, the crash occurred as Josue Chigwira, 18, Des Moines, IA, was southbound on I-35. About a mile south of Pattonsburg, his 2010 Hyun traveled off the right side of the road and struck a tree, where it came to rest.

Two passengers in the vehicle, Olivia Beck, 29, and Djerry Chigwira, 33, Des Moines, the driver’s brother, were both taken

by Daviess County Ambulance to Cameron Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. They were wearing their seat belts.

The Hyun was totaled. The accident was investigated by Tpr. J.P. Lynch, assisted by Daviess County Sheriff’s Department.

Dump truck rear ended by pickup A Cameron man received minor injuries in an accident that happened at about 2:50 p.m. on Dec. 12 on I-35 about four miles south of Cameron in Clinton County.

According to the highway patrol, the crash occurred as Gary Young, 52, Cameron, was driving a MoDOT attenuator work truck.

He was in the process of repairing the northbound passing lane of I-35. William Eaton, 55, Kidder, was driving a 2018 Ford pickup northbound. Young’s dump truck was struck in the rear by the pickup in the passing lane, where both vehicles came to rest.

Mr. Young was taken to Cameron Hospital by Cameron Ambulance with minor injuries. He was wearing his seat belt.

Route B closed Route B is closed for bridge reconstruction at the I-35 overpass through late December, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.

Women in Agriculture draws sold-out crowd, new vendors and sponsors The DeKalb and Daviess County Farm Service Agencies (FSA) and MU Extension hosted the fifth annual Women in Agriculture event at the June Conley Building in Maysville on Sept. 26, 2019.

Fischers celebrate 50 years of marriage Donald Fischer and Marilyn Hughes were married on Dec. 27, 1969, at Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey, IA. They are both enjoying retirement by spending time with family, traveling, and running their cattle operation, the Oval F Ranch, a purebred Simmental seedstock operation at Winston.

Marilyn is a registered nurse and retired after 30 years as regional manager with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services in Cameron.

Two SUVs collide, one person hurt A Bolivar woman received moderate injuries in an accident that happened at about 8:17 p.m. in Clinton County.

According to the highway patrol, the crash occurred as Jessica Motley, 37, Bolivar, and Megan Curtis, 32, Winston, were both northbound on I-35.

About four miles north of Lathrop, Motley, driving a GMC SUV, struck Curtis’s 2013 Ford SUV in the rear. Motley’s vehicle went off the east side of the roadway, down and up an embankment, and stopped on the shoulder of the roadway. She was taken by Cameron Ambulance to Mosaic in St. Joseph. She was not wearing a seat belt.

Motley’s vehicle had moderate damage, and Curtis’s had minor damage. The accident was investigated by Tpr. B.R. Muck, assisted by Clinton County Sheriff’s Office.

Jail board meets to review budget The Daviess-DeKalb Regional Jail Board will hold a budget meeting at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 20. The board will review the 2020 proposed budget. A closed session may also be held.

Bulldogs add to dual wrestling victories Gallatin wrestlers captured their third and fourth dual victories of the young season by defeating Maryville and Hamilton Tuesday night in Maryville.

The Bulldogs downed the host team, 65-12, with Ross Critten, Draven Wright, Draygon Schweizer, Rodell Sperry, Tyler Tustison, Gage Wright and Dyson Fry earning wins in contested matches.

Gallatin easily handled Hamilton, 60-18, with victories by Fry, Critten, Keegan Allen, Draven Wright, Schweizer and Sperry.

The Bulldogs travel to Sedalia for Friday and Saturday’s Battle of the Katy Trail tournament. Wrestling resumes Jan. 11 in the Marshall Tournament.

Caragan Baker and Maddi Michael each won matches against Hamilton opponents.

Cidnee Toney won a pair of matches by forfeit.

On Dec. 10, Gallatin National Honor Society (NHS) sponsored their annual Jammie Jingle drive in conjunction with the varsity basketball games. Braymer exits GRC for new CRC 8-Man configuration Once again, the landscape of 8-man football in Northwest Missouri has changed.

According to a post last Thursday on the Braymer C-4 School Facebook page, Braymer is leaving the 16-school Grand River Conference, effective next season. Braymer will join a “new” Central River Conference (CRC) alignment that will feature 11 teams divided into two divisions.

Braymer spent nearly 60 years in the CRC before dropping out and eventually joining the GRC. Old rivalries will be renewed for the Bobcats, who used to play Hardin-Central, Norborne and Orrick in the old CRC. The former CRC also included Polo, Lone Jack and Wentworth Military Academy (now defunct).

One reason Braymer officials give for the switch is decreased travel distances. The two CRC divisions will include Norborne/ Hardin-Central, Braymer, Keytesville, Chilhowee, North Shelby and Northwest-Hughesville in the CLAA Division, and Concordia, Orrick, Santa Fe, St. Paul’s and Sweet Springs in the I-70 Division.

Each CRC division will crown a conference champ and issues are being worked out that would allow the conference to crown an overall champion. Players will receive post season conference honors in each division.

The move certainly impacts

the GRC in all sports. St. Joseph Christian formed a cooperative agreement with Northland Christian of Kansas City to play 11-man football last season, leaving Albany, King City, North Andrew, Pattonsburg, Stanberry and Worth County to fill the opening on their schedules left

by SJC’s departure. Braymer’s conference swap leaves only six 8-man football programs in the GRC next season. The GRC West Division will also have only six schools participating in girls’ softball because SJC does not offer the program. Also with Braymer’s departure, there will be seven West Division basketball schools.

Update to the 2019 Hoops Schedule

Steve Maxey, Hoops Director, says that due to changes in school dismissal times, a change has been made to the Thursday, Dec. 19 schedule. “The same teams are playing on that date, just a change in times and order of play,” says Maxey. In addition, a game has been added to the Dec. 27 schedule between the North Mercer Girls and the Chillicothe Junior Varsity girls as a result of a rescheduling request by the North Mercer team.

Five Bulldogs receive 2019 MFCA honors The Missouri Football Coaches Association released all-district and all-state honor squads last week and five Gallatin Bulldogs have been named for post season honors.

Receiving Class 1, All-District 8 honors were JJ Waters, tight end; Tom Crouse, defensive end; Aidan Adkison, defensive back; Tristen Gibson, punter; and Ross Critten, wide receiver.

Named to the MFCA All-State list for Class 1 were Waters, second team tight end; Crouse, second team defensive end; and Gibson, third team punter.

Winston Homecoming activities Dec. 16-20 Winston’s Homecoming week is Dec 16-20. The Homecoming game is Dec. 20 with coronation and dance to follow.

Dress up days are as follows: Monday: PJ day, school appropriate; Tuesday: class color day; Wednesday: Christmas clothes, wear your best Christmas attire; Thursday: twin day, dress the same as a friend; Friday: spirit week, wear red and black.

Homecoming candidates are freshmen Jacob Muessig and Calyssa Johnson; sophomores Asher Vaughn and Emma Heldenbrand; juniors Marshall Farrell and Hannah Hullinger; seniors Bo Eaton and Holly Caldwell; basketball candidates Thomas Kile and Teagan Caldwell. The dance is in the cafeteria right after the boys game until 11 p.m.

School will dismiss at 12:35 on Friday, Dec. 20, for winter break.

Good things lie ahead for Gallatin’s basketball boys this season, but reaching team goals will be a process, as witnessed by recent setbacks.

Gallatin kicked the tempo up a notch to break a short 2-game losing skid Tuesday night with a 79-67 victory at Putnam County.

The win also represented the Bulldogs’ first in Grand River Conference Eastern Division action.

The Midgets jumped out to a 16-9 lead in the first quarter but the Bulldogs capped the period on a 14-5 run. Tristen Gibson’s shot at the buzzer gave Gallatin a 23-21 advantage heading into period number two. The Bulldogs led by as many as five points in the second quarter before blowing the game open with an 8-0 run to begin the final period.

Isaac Bird led the Bulldogs with 15 points and 7 rebounds.

Aidan Adkison scored 15 as well.

Gibson finished with 12 points and Dylan Burns chipped in 10.

The Bulldogs fell to the Creston, IA, Panthers Saturday night at NCMC’s Holiday Hoops.

Creston, a school with twice the enrollment of Gallatin, came away with a 55-46 victory after outscoring the Bulldogs, 30-21, in the second half. The Bulldogs were down by 4 points heading into the final quarter and pulled to within one possession with a Gibson field goal. Creston scored the final 5 points of the game over the course of the last minute of play.

Gibson led Gallatin with 15 points and 6 assists. Bird and Landon Corwin each pitched in with 8 points.

GHS girls struggle to close 2019

The National Honor Society (NHS) is a nationwide organization with selection based on four criteria: scholarship (academic achievement), leadership, service, and character. Inductees were Jimmie Nalle, Dylan McCrary, Sofia Nunn and Cameron Jones.

Gallatin’s Lady Bulldogs continue to experience growing pains in the young 2019-20 season. Putnam County’s Lady Midgets opened Grand River Conference East Division play Tuesday night with a 55-25 victory over Gallatin, signaling the Lady Bulldogs’ fifth loss of the season in six contests to date.

Gallatin trailed by only two points at the end of the first quarter, 7-5, but Putnam County roared to a 25-9 advantage by halftime.

Elle Copple came off the

bench to lead the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 6 points. Claire Hemry, Presley Wells and Carli Beck each scored 4 for Gallatin.

Madalyn Shubert paced Gallatin with 10 rebounds.

Gallatin fell to Hardin-Central Saturday night in the NCMC Holiday Hoops event. Wells led in scoring with 7 points. Hemry, Shubert and Libby Endicott each tossed in 6 points.

Mandatory bridge inspections by January Austin Hibler, MoDOT, met with the commission to discuss bridge inspections on all of the bridges/culverts over 20’ long in Daviess County. These inspections are mandatory every two years. Daviess County’s inspections will be completed in December and January. Jessica Burns, MoDOT new engineer, will be present for the final follow-up meeting in January.

James Lewis, bridge supervisor, updated the commission on ongoing work. They have been working on washouts and tubes in Sheridan Township. They are continuing to mow brush in Grand River and Jamesport Townships.

The commission will be attending the County Commissioners Association of Missouri mandatory training in Jefferson City Feb. 12-14, 2020.

Deputy Robert Mazur met with the commission to advise them he would not be on duty as a sheriff deputy, nor working as deputy coroner, after Dec. 31, 2019, as he has accepted the position of Court Security for the 43rd Judicial District, recently vacated by the retirement of Buddy Weller.

Deputy Larry Adams Jr. met with the commission to advise them regarding a situation with protesters outside the courthouse.

Discussion was held regarding yearly donations to Children’s Mercy Hospital. Ronetta Burton, county clerk, advised the commission that she had been in contact with the hospital county liaison to discuss why the county’s donations were not showing on our county account.

Daviess County has made a $4,000 donation each year, including 2019. There are also donations from the Fitch Trust in Grundy County that total $5,500 for Daviess County’s part for 2014-2018. Ronetta will continue to work with the hospital to get the account corrected.

David Cox made a motion to accept the Workforce Development Board Chief Local Elected Officials Consortium ByLaws and Agreement; Wayne Uthe seconded, and the motion passed, 3-0. The agreement was signed.

The commission heard the first reading of a petition to close a portion of Quartz Avenue in Union Township. Landowners touching the portion of Quartz Ave petitioned to be closed will receive notice from the commission. A second reading of the petition will be held in the JanuaryMarch session.

Discussion was held regarding an agreement for Daviess County to continue with Missouri Social Services for Child Support Enforcement. David Cox made a motion to accept the Missouri Department of Social Services County Reimbursement Cooperative Agreement beginning Jan 1, 2020 through Dec 31, 2022; Wayne Uthe seconded, and the motion passed, 3-0. The agreement was signed.

Ronetta Burton will also acquire the signatures of the circuit clerk and the prosecuting attorney.

Budget meetings were held with Pam McNeel, collector/ treasurer; Dana Carter and Gene Walker, Central Dispatch 911; and Sally Black, assessor.

Vessar was involved in an accident in April 2018 in Winston in which a 30-year-old Pattonsburg man was killed.

Shelby Marie McAfee pled guilty to possession of controlled substance, D felony, drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana, A misdemeanors, and endangering welfare of a child, D felony. A sentence assessment report was ordered.

James D. Whitt pled guilty to

domestic assault second degree, D felony, and was sentenced to three years in the Department of Corrections. He had been scheduled for a jury trial on Dec. 18.

April D. Brown pled guilty to possession of controlled substance, D felony, drug paraphernalia and no seat belt. A sentence assessment report was ordered.

A change of venue to the Clay County Veteran Treatment Court was granted to Lester E. Bryan of Jamesport, who is charged with two counts of unlawful possession of firearm.

A change of venue to Livingston County was granted to Jeramiah C.D. Brittain, who is charged with one count of domestic assault.

A warrant was served on Virginia Ellen Wainwright, and she was taken into custody. She is charged with two counts of possession of controlled substance, D felonies, and misdemeanors of careless and imprudent driving, drug paraphernalia and DWI. Elijah J. Carlson pled guilty to tampering with motor vehicle, D felony, and a sentence assessment report was ordered.

Kerrie Lea Riley pled guilty to unlawful possession of firearm, possession of controlled substance, and unlawful use of weapon, all felonies, and was sentenced to four years in the Department of Corrections on each count, sentences to run concurrently. She was fined $300 for possession of marijuana.

Ginny Marie Klitzing pled guilty to DWI persistent, two counts of endangering welfare of a child, and possession of controlled substance, all felonies, and misdemeanor drug paraphernalia. A sentence assessment report was ordered.

Benjamin T. Shubert pled guilty to tampering with a victim, D felony, and was sentenced to seven years in the Department of Corrections. The court

stated for Wilson at $10,000.

Wilson is a medical marijuana patient and has been the focus of two protests at the Daviess County courthouse, organized by medical marijuana advocate Nate Bullman. The judge ruled that Wilson is subject to all standard 43rd Judicial Circuit conditions of bond with the additional condition of wearing a “drug patch.” He is to be supervised by 43rd District Supervision Services. The case is set for plea or trial setting on Jan. 15, 2020.

Before Judge J. Bartley Spear on Dec. 12, probation was revoked for Jeramy J. Sanders on a charge of domestic assault.

Virgil W. Griffin 1935- 2019 Funeral services for Virgil Griffin were held Dec. 17 at Coffey Baptist Church under the direction of Roberson Funeral Home, Bethany, with burial in Coffey Cemetery. Virgil W Griffin, 84, Coffey, died Dec. 13, 2019.

He was born on Oct. 19, 1935, near Brimson, the son of Loren and Ora Bell (Sharp) Griffin.

On May 13, 1960, he married Carolyn Faye Ratliff in Jamesport. She survives of the home.

Virgil attended three country schools, Lake Elementary, Knights Town School and Brimson School, before attending Gilman City and graduating from Pattonsburg High School in 1954. After graduation, Virgil went to Wyoming to work. In 1957, he joined the Army to serve his two years of duty and was stationed in Germany. While there, he discovered he had a knack for wrestling and won many trophies and awards.

After his discharge from the Army, Virgil and Carolyn met and were married. The next 59 years Virgil and Carolyn farmed, trucked and worked several other jobs, all while raising four kids.

Virgil retired in 2017 from a 30-year trucking career.

In April 2018, Virgil began a new career at the Daviess DeKalb Regional Jail as “keeper of the gate.”

Virgil served as alderman for the City of Coffey. He gave many hours of selfless service to the town of Coffey and its residents.

His seven-year sentence was executed.

A change of venue from DeKalb County was filed Dec. 13: State vs. Michael Clyde-David Moses, Kansas City, assault first degree, armed criminal action, resisting arrest, two counts of leaving scene of accident, and attempted stealing, all felonies.

The offenses were allegedly committed on June 1, 2019, at the Cameron Walmart. Officers initially responded to a report of shoplifting. In the parking lot, Moses drove at one of the officers, S.E. Belshe, knocking him down and running over his leg.

Moses then fled westbound on U.S. 36. The pursuit continued into Kansas, and Moses was eventually taken into custody in Wathena. ssessor s ffi e If representatives from the assessor’s office have been on your property, they will leave a business card or flyer so that you will know they have been there.

that began when decorations caught fire caused an average of three civilian deaths, 34 civilian fire injuries and $12 million in direct property damage per year from 2013 to 2017.

In 44% of these fires, the decoration was too close to a heat source. Ensure that decorations are kept at least three feet away from heat sources, especially candles.

Fifty-seven percent of December home decoration fires were started by candles, compared to 32% in January through November.

In addition, December is the peak month for candle fires.

Sixty percent of home candle fires started because a flammable item was too close to the candle. In 13 percent of the fires, the candle was left unattended or abandoned.

Christmas trees -- Christmas tree fires are not as common as fires started by other decorations, but when they do occur, they are much more likely to be serious. An annual average of 160 home fires began with Christmas trees.

On average, one of every 52 reported home Christmas tree fires resulted in a death, compared to an average of one death per 135 total reported home fires. Electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in more than two of every five (44%) home Christmas tree fires, with decorative lights the leading type of equipment involved.

Cooking: -- Cooking is the leading cause of U.S. home fires year-round; unattended cooking is the leading cause of these fires, accounting for 31% of home cooking fires. Christmas Day is the second-leading day for home cooking fires, with 69% more fires than the average daily number. Christmas Eve is not far behind, with 58% more fires than the daily average.

Heating -- Heating equipment is the second-leading cause of U.S. home fires, with nearly half of all home heating fires occurring in December, January and February. The leading factor contributing to home heating fires (27%) was failure to clean, principally from solid-fueled heating equipment, primarily chimneys.

Most home heating fire deaths (86%) involved stationary or portable space heaters.

In the majority of these deaths, something that could catch fire was too close to the heater.
