WELCOME TO GREEN POINT CHRISTIAN COLLEGE At GPCC we recognise that these formative years provide students with the vital opportunity to build confidence and skills as a learner. Students will commence their journey in understanding themselves, how they learn and the learning process. Deep understanding is achieved through quality teaching, the establishment of meaningful relationships, exposure to a broad curriculum and a rich array of co-curricular activities. PRIMARY 1-6 COMMENCEMENT _________

Primary 1-6 commences the 2023 school year in Term 1 on Wednesday 31st January 2024 and students will attend 5 full days a week. Supervision begins at 8:15am and students can arrive from then.

LATENESS AND ABSENCES If your child is arriving at school after 8:45am, they will need to go to the Office to get a late note prior to going to the classroom. If you need to pick up your child early, please send along a note outlining a reason and time of departure. The class teacher will send your child to the Office for pick up, where you can sign them out. Students are to be collected from the Office only. The school has a legal responsibility to keep records of attendance for all students. Any absence from school, including illness, needs to be explained to the College. LEARNING IN PRIMARY _________

The six Key Learning Areas (KLAs) set out by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and adopted by Green Point Christian College with a Christian perspective are taught in all Primary grades at GPCC. Our teachers have developed high quality programs that focus on the cognitive engagement of students. Explicit teaching outlines clear directions and goals in each lesson. Lessons are presented in a manner that develops creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, using a growth mindset. Our teachers construct lessons around skill development in areas such as problem solving, critical and creative thinking, reflection collaborative learning and hands on guided investigations. Students are assessed on their knowledge and understanding at regular intervals and provided with an outline of clear success criteria, so that learning intentions are known.

ATTENDING SCHOOL Going to school every day is important and Kindergarten sets children up for the rest of their schooling. What your child learns each day builds on what they learnt the day before. If your child misses school, their learning routine is broken, so they can lose confidence and miss out on building their friendships. You have a legal responsibility to send your children to school every school day. If your child misses school due to illness, religious reasons, or family circumstances, please notify the College Office or lodge their absence on Parent Lounge. If your child arrives at school late or needs to leave early, you will need to go to the office to sign your child in or out. If you’re having difficulty getting your child to school every day and on time, talk to the teacher or Head of Primary.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING _________

Grounded in current research our wellbeing approach recognises the complex and dynamic nature of each child’s social and emotional development. We recognise that the family is the most important part of a child’s development. As a child begins school there are many changes that will occur. Disciplinary matters are generally handled by the classroom teacher. Each class has their own behaviour/reward systems recognising effort in both academic and behavioural areas. This includes certificates, stickers and class rewards. As well as this, each teacher nominates a student to receive a ‘Head of Primary School Award’, to be acknowledged at Assembly/Chapel and presented with a certificate. Discipline in the Primary School should be an extension of the discipline that takes place in the home. When disciplining children, we try to find the appropriate balance between demonstrating grace and helping the students recognise there are consequences for their actions. Our Behaviour Management Policy can be found on the College Website (www.gpcc.nsw.edu.au). Encouragement Awards called ‘Green Points’ are given by teachers to students for a wide variety of positive actions or achievements. Here are some ways: Talk with your child •

Communicate with comfort and connection. Be relaxed in your facial expression and body, get down to your child’s level and offer gentle touch or affection.

Validate and relate to your child’s feelings. Consider how they’re experiencing the situation from their point of view. Discuss and set limits. Support your child to consider the bigger picture and help them solve problems. Wishes and feelings are acceptable but some behaviours are not. It is important to remain calm, clear and assertive.

“I hear you want to play more. It is important that you get a good night’s sleep” “I can see you are frustrated but it is not OK to yell or hit.” •

Notice and address any physical, behavioural or emotional changes. Normal reactions to stress include tiredness, struggling to fall asleep, boredom, feeling irritable or acting out, being withdrawn or avoiding school and homework, complaints of an upset stomach or headache, excessively asking questions, or seeking reassurance.

IF YOUR CHILD IS SICK AT SCHOOL If your child gets sick or injured at school, the school will contact you. If your child is ill, they will go to an area where they can lie down and be monitored. You will be called to come and collect your child if they are too sick to go back into the classroom. For this reason, it is important to keep your contact details up to date with the school, you can do this by going to your Parent Lounge and updating all relevant details, including an alternative contact – such as a relative or neighbour, the school can call should you be unavailable.

IF YOUR CHILD IS SICK AT HOME From time to time your child may get sick. If they display any of the following symptoms, they should stay at home and see a doctor. • • • • •

A fever of 38 degrees or above. Vomiting or diarrhoea. Cough or respiratory symptoms. Cold and flu symptoms. Rashes of an unknown origin.

SUN SAFETY We promote sun-smart behaviour by encouraging students and staff to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide. School staff encourage students to play in the natural and built shade environments. Our College has a ‘no hat, no play’ policy so your child will need their hat to play with their friends at recess and lunch. You can protect your child from the damaging effects of UV radiation by applying sunscreen each morning before they leave for school.

ALLERGIES AND ASTHMA It is important for you to inform the Principal and the school if your child has asthma or allergies, not just those diagnosed as severe or food allergies. Parents can upload this information into their Parent Lounge and update as needed. Anaphylaxis is a severe and sudden allergic reaction and sudden allergic to allergens such as nuts or shellfish, or insect bites. If your child is diagnosed with asthma or at risk of an anaphylactic reaction, you must provide the College with information with information from your child’s doctor, including an Action Plan for Anaphylaxis in accordance with the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA). The College will develop an individual health care plan to describe your child’s needs and how the College plans to meet these needs during the school day, on excursions and in other school activities such as sport.

‘THE MUNCHERY’ - CANTEEN • • •

Open every day from 8:30am to 2:00pm. Lunch orders may be lodged at the Canteen before classes commence online. ‘The Munchery’ - have partnered with Munch Monitor (www.munchmonitor.com) to provide an online ordering and payment system. Parents must register to use this system by going to https://www.gpcc.nsw.edu.au/community/the-munchery-canteen the College Website / School Life / Canteen. Click on the link provided. Registration will require entry of a School Code (username: greenpoint, password: munch2251).

STAYING CONNECTED _________

COMMUNICATION CHANNELS Communication plays an important role in helping parents feel connected to our College community and to know what’s going on in your child’s school environment. One of our goals is to partner with families as we equip students for life. With this in mind, we aim to communicate with you regularly, in a variety of helpful and informative ways. Below is an explanation of how we use our key methods of communication, so you are aware of how and when the College will communicate to you.

COLLEGE WEBSITE Our College Website is a great resource for both existing and new parents to the GPCC community. It contains helpful, up to date information and is often where we link parents to from other sources for further details. You can use the College Website to find out more about who we are, access Education and Learning resources, better understand our College Community, read our latest Newsletter, learn more regarding Enrolment and New Parent Information, and view current employment opportunities. GPCC PHONE APP Our GPCC Phone App is a key channel of communication to our parent community. Via the App, you will receive notifications for important information and reminders regarding the following items: • • • • • • •

THE MESSENGER (NEWSLETTER) Our Newsletter is a great way to stay in touch with the life of the College. Sent out weekly on Friday afternoons for the week ahead, we provide you with the following information: • • •

EMAILS Emails are generally sent out by Class Teachers and are very specific to that class. Please check your email inbox regularly for emails from teachers so that you don’t miss any important information relating to your child.

SMS MESSAGES If the College needs to contact a group of parents urgently, we may send an SMS to the mobile phone number(s) listed in our records. This is usually only used if there is no other effective way to contact you quickly. For example, if a bus is returning more than 30 minutes early or late from an excursion, an email or Parent Lounge notification may not be as effective. In this instance, the College would send an SMS message direct to your phone.

PRIVATE FACEBOOK GROUPS A private Facebook group is created for each Primary grade, so that parents can easily connect and communicate with each other throughout the year. You will be sent the link to the relevant Facebook group upon enrolment. The Grade Facebook groups are primarily for the parent community, however GPCC will occasionally post in these spaces regarding event reminders or upcoming volunteer opportunities. Note that some parent grades have also set up WhatsApp groups, but the College is unable to monitor all these groups or use them effectively to communicate important information.

PUBLIC SOCIAL MEDIA We use our public social media sites (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) to celebrate high-level College achievements, notify parents of fundraising outcomes, and share about the wonderful things happening across different year groups. We love sharing our College highlights with you, so we encourage you to follow us on our social media pages. However, we realise that not everyone wants to be on social media, so this method of connecting with the College is optional and you will not miss any important information about upcoming events by not being on our social media channels. SCHOOL SECURITY AND VOLUNTEERS Parent helpers need to sign in at the College office each time they come to help at school. All Volunteers working directly with children need to obtain a ‘Volunteers Working with Children Check’ which is free. The steps involved are: 1. Apply Online at https://www.ocg.nsw.gov.au/child-safe-organisations/working-with-children-check 2. Receive an Application Number (starting with APP). 3. Go to Service NSW to show identification. There is no fee for volunteers. 4. A receipt will be issued - but this is not the WWC number. 5. A WWC will be issued within a few weeks but may be earlier. To run the clearance check, please provide your Surname, Date of Birth and WWC number Mrs. Sue Parkinson at sparkinson@gpcc.nsw.edu.au.

LINES OF COMMUNICATION If a situation arises which needs to be addressed, it is appropriate to speak directly to the class teacher. You can do this via email or over the phone. If the situation is still not resolved, the next step is to speak to the K-2 Coordinator, and if appropriate, the Head of Primary. Parents and teachers are encouraged to use email to communicate. Due to the large number of emails received, teachers have a 2-day turn around policy. If it is urgent, please call the Office and leave a message to be passed on. Parents are also welcome to meet with teachers in a scheduled meeting at a mutually convenient time.

GRADE BUDDIES All our Kindergarten students are assigned to a Year 6 Buddy. Year 6 Buddies provide an older role model whilst at school, assisting in the orientation and transition to school. Throughout students first year at school, Buddies will meet together for reading, games and chapel.

GRADE PARENTS Each year, two grade parents are nominated to oversee connection across Green Point Christian College Primary. Grade Parents assist in the organising of helpers for school events, welcome new families, organise holiday socials and administer the grade Facebook pages.

WITHDRAWAL OF STUDENTS If you wish to withdraw your child thereby ending their enrolment at the College, you must give 10 weeks’ term time notice in writing to the Registrar. If this notice is not given, you need to agree to pay 10 weeks’ fees + GST for each student enrolment being withdrawn. This amount is a genuine pre-estimate by the College of the loss that it would suffer because we have not given the required notice.

STATIONERY REQUIREMENTS _________

Most of your child’s resources are provided by the College, e.g. exercise books, craft equipment, Mathematics equipment, Readers, etc. However, the following lists include basic equipment items which will be required for the start of Term 1. It is important that children have the necessary stationery items to ensure they are well prepared for the commencement of the new school year. PLEASE NOTE: All children in Years 4- 6 must have their own NIrV, Discoverer’s Bible for Early Readers, Large Print, Hardcover - which is available for purchase from your local Christian outlet. All items must be labelled and children need a sturdy equipment case. Items will need to be replenished from home as they are used. All children in Kindergarten to Year 6 must have a set of Headphones or Ear buds to fit iPad. These are to be labelled in a soft bag. We recommend buying “volume limited” headphones which are available in a number of brands and stores. A mouse for a Laptop Computer may be brought to school as an option.

UNIFORM _________

Correct school uniform must be worn to and from school and whilst at school, Uniform helps us to belong. All items of uniform are to be purchased through the Uniform Shop, located next to the canteen. Between September and May all students must wear a school hat, whenever they are outside the classroom. All items of clothing, including hats and bags, must be labelled clearly with your child’s name. Students with hair longer than shoulder length, must have it tied back. A photo of the correct shoe styles appears on the Uniform Information page of this handbook. Students may wear their sports uniforms to and from school on days specified by the class teacher and dress uniform on all other occasions. A list of uniform items and prices are on the following pages of this handbook.

UNIFORM POLICY _________ • • • •

Appropriate regulation uniform must be worn at school and while travelling to and from school, including School Excursions. All items of uniform should be clean, neat and have names labelled clearly. Boy’s shirts in Junior School are to be worn tucked in at all times There is no requirement to wear a hat to and from school, but a hat (either bucket hat or sports cap) must be worn while at school in the playground. The College has a “No hat, no play” policy.

** The Soft-shell jacket will be phased in as the outer garment for the formal uniform. (Phase in period 20222024) It will be available in the uniform shop for term 2 purchasing in all sizes. The soft-shell Jacket can be worn over the red jumper or on its own with the formal uniform only. After the phase in period the sports jacket will only be allowed to be worn with the sports uniform in Primary and secondary.

GIRLS’ PRIMARY WINTER UNIFORM

Our new Winter Tunic is now available in the Uniform shop. As the uniform is phased in students are permitted to wear either the old check tunic or the striped tunic. • •

Tunics are to be worn with a long or short sleeve white blouse with round collar and either white ankle socks or Black opaque tights. The Red Tab is to be worn with the Tunic ONLY Skort is to be worn with either the short or long sleeve blouse, (can be untucked) with either white ankle socks or Black opaque tights. No Red Tab is required.

The phase in of the new uniform will happen gradually over this year and next year with the expectation that all students are in the new tunic /skort in winter 2025. This means that the current Years 5 and 6 students do not need to purchase the new uniform as they will be in Secondary when the changeover period ceases.

YOUR OHSC Your OSHC gives children enriching before and after school and pupil free day experiences. Our dedicated approach provides a service that is tailored to Green Point Christian College, ensuring that the evolving requirements of your child, school and community are met.

TAILORED EXPERIENCES The program at Green Point Christian College is unique and tailored to the educational ethos and values of your school and the individual needs of the children in the service. In every before and after-school session, your coordinator designs a featured activity to engage the children. Complementing the feature activity are experience zones that give children the freedom of choice and guide them to learn through play.

CAMP AUSTRALIA VACATION PROGRAM Camp Australia, our OOSCH provider from Term 1 2023, is inviting GPCC families to utilise the vacation care program ‘Rocketeers’ at St Philips Gosford. A future vacation care program is earmarked to be hosted at GPCC once our OOSCH program is established.

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT PLAN _________

FOR OUR CHILDREN’S SAFETY This Traffic Management Plan has been produced with the paramount aim of the safety of children when they arrive or leave the College. Compliance with this Plan will also improve traffic flow in peak periods. 1. SPEED LIMIT is strictly 10kph and is a share pedestrian/vehicle area. Please take great care in the carpark to avoid injury or incident. 2. Use gate 1 for Kiss and Drop 1 (years 4-12) and P1 and gate 3 for Kiss and Drop 3 (K-2 and Yattalunga Valley Christian School) and P3. 3. TRAFFIC WARDENS will be on duty during peak periods to supervise the movement of students and vehicles. Please follow their instructions. 4. PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS, monitored by Traffic Wardens, should be used in order to promote the safe separation of pedestrians and vehicles. 5. Any PRE-SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN are to be supervised at all times, including holding hands whenever possible. 6. Kiss and Drop zones are supervised •

CARPARK PROCEDURE _________

AFTERNOON The College has three entrances and four exits. The entrances and exits are numbered so that they correlate with the carpark numbers and the Kiss and Drop numbers. Eg. Gate 1 Entry relates to P1 and Kiss and Drop 1. Collection of K-2 students, their siblings, and Yattalunga Valley Christian School students • Entry via Gate 3 from 3:15pm - Kiss and Drop 3 will be in operation. Please do not arrive before 3:15pm to queue for collection as this places congestion on Avoca Drive. •

Use Gate 4 Exit to the roundabout on Avoca Drive (only turn left to Kincumber) or you may loop around and use Gate 4 exit (to use the roundabout to Saratoga and Green Point)

Use Gate 3 and P4 to park and collect

Collection of all other students •

Entry via Gate 1 from 3:15pm - Kiss and Drop 1 will be in operation. It would be helpful if you do not park in the Kiss and Drop zone before 3:15pm.

Display your surname (provided by GPCC) on your dash – this allows us to quickly call your child/ren over to meet you.

Staff will have two-way radios and can locate your children if they are at the wrong Kiss and Drop zone or at the Bus Bay.
