A Word from President & CEO Bert Wesley Huffman
Dear Friends,
As the colder weather begins to recede around Georgia, GPB is here for you on all fronts. Since launching our strategic plan, “Uniting and Uplifting Georgia: A Roadmap to 2030,” we have heard from so many of you about GPB’s value in your communities across the state. In reality, though, the true value of public media is always local. Of course, we take great pride in providing you with quality public media programming from PBS and NPR, but more than that GPB is a resource for everyone in our state. In an uncertain time for other funding sources, the dollars that you give matter more and more every day. Remember, your investment in GPB adds up to more than just quality entertainment and programming – those dollars help GPB further its work in education and engagement and efforts as well as community connections.
I’m always amazed that GPB can mean something special to everyone individually. I’ve had conversations with people who grew up on GPB like I did and hold a very nostalgic place in their hearts for it. I’ve heard from people who moved to Georgia as adults and found GPB to help them familiarize themselves with the diverse nature and population of our state. And I’ve heard from people who turn to public media because they trust that the news and information they receive is both factual and well researched. Just as GPB can be so varied in the work we do, those who support us are made up of many variations as well. GPB really does have something for everyone.
Thank you for your continued support. This resource is here for you, and because of you. And we don’t take that responsibility to fulfill our vision of uniting and uplifting Georgia lightly. We must for you and all of Georgia.
Warmest regards,
Bert Wesley Huffman

Premieres Sunday, March 23, 9PM
Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light, based on the final novel in Hilary Mantel’s multiaward-winning trilogy, premieres on MASTERPIECE Sunday, March 23 at 9 p.m.
Academy Award® winner Mark Rylance will return to his BAFTA-winning role of Thomas Cromwell, while Emmy® Award winner Damian Lewis returns as King Henry VIII.
“The Mirror and the Light picks up exactly where Wolf Hall ended, with the execution of Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn,” said director Peter Kosminsky. “I’m overjoyed to be able to reunite the extraordinary cast we were lucky enough to assemble for Wolf Hall, led by the brilliant Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis, with the original creative team of Gavin Finney (DOP), Pat Campbell (Designer) and Joanna Eatwell (Costume Designer). We are all determined to complete what we started – and to honour the final novel written by one of the greatest literary figures of our age, Hilary Mantel.”
As the series begins, it’s May 1536, and Anne Boleyn, Henry’s second wife, is dead. Thomas Cromwell emerges to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen, Jane Seymour. Cromwell, a man with only his wits to rely on, has no great family to back him, and no private army. Navigating the moral complexities that accompany the exercise of power in this brutal and bloody time, Cromwell is caught between his desire to do what is right and his instinct to survive. But in the wake of Henry VIII having executed his queen, no one is safe.
“I’m overjoyed to be able to reunite the extraordinary cast we were lucky enough to assemble for Wolf Hall, led by the brilliant Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis...”
-Peter Kosminsky, Director
Despite rebellion at home, traitors plotting abroad and the threat of invasion testing Henry’s regime to breaking point, Cromwell’s robust imagination sees a new country in the mirror of the future. All of England lies at his feet, ripe for innovation and religious reform. But as fortune’s wheel turns, Cromwell’s enemies are gathering in the shadows. The inevitable question remains: How long can anyone survive under Henry’s cruel and capricious gaze?
Eagerly awaited and years in the making, Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light will trace the final four years of Cromwell’s life, completing his journey from self-made man to the most feared, influential figure of his time. Cromwell is as complex as he is unforgettable: a politician and a fixer, a diplomat and a father, a man who both defied and defined his age.
Tune in for Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light Sunday nights at 9 p.m. beginning March 23.
GPB Hosts Screening of PBS KIDS Series Carl the Collector
In partnership with the Early Childhood Initiative of Northwest Georgia, GPB recently hosted a special screening of the new PBS KIDS series Carl the Collector at the Anna Shaw Children’s Institute (ASCI) in Dalton, Georgia, a regional leader and advocate for the care of children who experience the challenges of developmental delays.
Carl the Collector is the first PBS KIDS series to feature a central character on the autism spectrum and highlights the importance of understanding and embracing all individuals, no matter their differences.
The festivities kicked off with a screening of the very first episodes introducing Carl, a thoughtful, young raccoon who sees the world in his own special way. After the screening, children and parents got the rare opportunity to meet Julia from Sesame Street, a beloved puppet character with autism. Julia’s appearance was a meaningful moment, especially for the children at the event who are also on the autism spectrum.
Hands-on activities at the event included a weaving activity hosted by The Northwest Regional Library that encouraged children to explore their creativity while honing fine motor skills. Creative Arts Guild led a hands-on activity to make an argyle sweater, Carl’s signature outfit topper, out of a paper bag and scrapbooking paper. This hands-on learning activity helped the children practice fine motor skills, flex their creativity and tap into critical thinking skills.
Families were invited to participate in other activities, including sensory play with fidgets that were provided by ASCI, and restful moments in the calming corner, which was carefully created with sensory-friendly elements, such as soft textures, dimmed lighting, and interactive sensory tools, to help children with autism feel comfortable.
The success of this event was a testament to the importance of representation and the impact that stories like Carl’s can have on young minds, helping to create a more accepting, understanding, and supportive future for all.

Celebrate Women’s History Month with GPB
Each year, March is designated as Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation to honor women’s contributions in American history. According to the National Women’s History Museum, Women’s History Month began as Women’s History Week in 1978 in Santa Rosa, California. In 1980, a consortium of women’s groups and historians lobbied for national recognition, and Georgia’s own President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the Week of March 8, 1980 as National Women’s History Week.
Subsequent Presidents continued to proclaim a National Women’s History Week in March until 1987 when Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as “Women’s History Month.”
Viewers can explore the lives, legacies and journeys of fascinating women with programming available through GPB and the PBS app as we mark Women’s History Month during March.

Lawmakers Marks 55 Years On The Air
Each year beginning in January, Lawmakers provides daily, in-depth coverage of the state legislature. Now celebrating its fifty-fifth year on the air, Lawmakers is hosted by award-winning journalist Donna Lowry, who is marking her fifth season at the program’s helm.
Along with capitol correspondent Sarah Kallis, Lowry brings the stories of the day’s legislative activities to GPB viewers live each MondayThursday at 7 p.m. during the 40day legislative session.
Lowry spoke with NEXT about how the program serves Georgians.
NEXT: Why do you think Lawmakers is an important, unique program that GPB offers to Georgians?
Lowry: While informed voters do their homework to select representatives who align with their values and priorities, it can be challenging to remain engaged with the ongoing activities of those officials once they take office. The decisions made under the iconic Gold Dome in Atlanta directly impact the daily lives of Georgians and staying informed is essential.
Host Donna Lowry, left, and capitol correspondent Sarah Kallis, right.
Host Donna Lowry, center, with guests on Lawmakers
The show offers Georgians a transparent look at how their tax dollars are spent. They learn whether public schools adequately meet their children’s needs and ensure safety. They gauge whether their families receive the healthcare services essential for their well-being. They determine whether they will have adequate roads and bridges. They discover whether they can feel safe in their homes or receive justice in the court system.
By bringing this information directly to viewers, Lawmakers empowers them to engage meaningfully with their government and advocate for their communities.
NEXT: Can you talk about your show interviews with legislators?
Lowry: I always try to put myself in the shoes of the viewers, helping them understand the complexities of the issues our elected officials are grappling with. My goal is to present a well-rounded view of the laws under consideration so people can make informed decisions about what’s happening in our state.
NEXT: Each Friday, you join GPB Morning Edition host Pamela Kirkland during the 5 – 10 a.m. broadcast for a segment called “Lawmakers Huddle.” What will listeners learn from the program?
Lowry: I recap the week’s legislative activities and offer listeners an overview of the key events and developments under the Gold Dome. Additionally, I share a sneak peek of what to anticipate in the coming week.
Tune in for Lawmakers Monday – Thursday at 7 p.m. and listen to Morning Edition each Friday from 5 – 10 a.m. for the “Lawmakers Huddle” segment with Donna Lowry.
Additionally, stay tuned for announcements of the next installment of Lawmakers Beyond the Dome, a program that delves into the impact that the General Assembly session has on the lives of Georgians by taking viewers into communities to reveal how the decisions ripple through everyday life in communities large and small.
